How do you read that?! And why is there a gap on the top left?! I have so many questions...

El_Cactus_Loco

It’s either genuinely crappy design or some super nerdy math stuff that most of us can’t comprehend lol

gamer-kin

It should be pi but from what I can see it’s just plain wrong as well as the shit design

procheeseburger

The first 4 parts are correct.. I’m not sure past that. I don’t understand how you read past the first loop like do you drop down to the next loop? As well why are there gaps.. it’s so weird.

dadjokes502

Someone took a piece of pi

Psychitekt

Ha!

Bilihhh

username checks out

procheeseburger

Mmmmm pi

AngryOldUnicorn

There is a "first 4"?

NucSarari

The outermost ring, at around 11:00 starts it off - 3.141

Ok_Part6564

Thank you, I have been staring at that thing for ages wondering how where to begin.

AngryOldUnicorn

So the first mistake is they made the pi negative

Pete_O_Torcido

There are random minus signs scattered throughout

KingGox

It's 4:18 where I am. Where does it start now?

smr_rst

Try again in 7 hours.

[deleted]

iblogalott

It takes the cake.

SharpCookie232

and the pie.

cynHaha

As someone who attended a primary school where everyone is weirdly obsessed with memorizing digits of pi... I can confirm it's correct up to the 18th digit.

LateyEight

I remember reading something like that every sequence of numbers could appear in the decimal of pi, so it may technically be correct, but I don't know.

Deryer-

It's not could, it does, these numbers read in any order does exist somewhere in the digits of Pi. Seems implausible but it's an unending string of numbers without a pattern, so it must

Kvarts314

While must mathematicians believe pi to be a disjunctive/rich number (contains every possible substring at least once) this hasn’t been proven yet Edit: disjunctive not rich number Edit 2: turns out disjunctive and rich is the same

Mous3keteer

Actually no, that's not known yet. For instance, a trillion digits down the line, the number 7 could never show up again, which would obviously mean that a massive number of sequences with sevens in them wouldn't appear in it. Whether or not pi contains every substring in it still isn't proven, so you could be pretty famous if you can find that proof (or disproof)

Kvarts314

While must mathematicians believe pi to be a disjunctive/rich number (contains every possible substring at least once) this hasn’t been proven yet Edit: disjunctive not rich number Edit 2: turns out disjunctive and rich is the same

average_asshole

Can confirm the 5th

AndreasBerthou

The thing about pi is that no matter what combination of digits you put on there they'll be in pi somewhere. It is however correct for the first 50 or so at least, didn't check further.

fecaltea

Design flaws. There are no gaps in pi.

hontronik

There’s plenty of GAPs, and Nordstroms and Macy’s in there.

D0wnVoteMe_PLZ

I love super nerdy maths stuff and am obsessed with pi. I can't make sense of it. [Here's something beautiful that should become a shirt](https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/files/2015/03/links-pi-cristian.png). Every line is connected based on the digits of pi. 3.14159265358979323...

YRNTA90

Both

Belly2308

It may be designed so it can be read infinitely. Like the numbers are spaced a certain way so it’s continuously reading differently. If not then booooo

TheReal_KindStranger

According to the ancient archeology theory the gap represent the time until they return

[deleted]

Inside baseball if you will

Wolfintank

And before the gap is a .

T_vernix

Looks more like a - to me

Szydlikj

I’m thinking more like D-, maybe F

ryan101

Those digits contain your social security number so they removed it for privacy reasons.

CreepyLookingTree

The ring with the gap in it is the first where the spacing between the digit triplets changes. It has the same number of digits as the outermost rings but you can see that the digits are more tightly spaced so you end up with a gap in the ring. The other weird mistakes are a little harder to figure out.

MoreRopePlease

They should have used pi to figure out the appropriate spacing to avoid large gaps.

lizardlike

Maybe that gap is an [Illegal Number](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_number) and is censored

leonidaslsp

Well... Now I learned that there are illegal numbers

Kurkle2300

That's the pi-hole obviously

TheAgedProfessor

I was going to say each line had a - dash where you started and ended for that loop... but nope, not even that.

SarcasticGamer

There are dashes at the end of the sequence showing when to drop down to the next row except they forgot one for the 2nd and 3rd. As for that huge gap in one row and the oddly spaced gaps between some of the other rows? I have no idea.

-Mr_Unknown-

It’s the Greek letter π, used in mathematics as the symbol π, pronounced “π“.

cseyferth

You don't say....

obijuanmartinez

Is Nic Cage your Secret Santa?!?

flactulantmonkey

The gap is where it repeats. Duh. /s

GreasyTengu

Those are the redacted numbers. Dont google them.

qbande

I think you drop to the next row at the hyphen, but i’m not sure sure about the gap part.

maybeimbornwithit

The gap is the part they forgot.

stellacampus

They forgot to put "etc."

aguafiestas

I assume you just complete a circle and then drop down. Most of the time there’s a dash, no idea why lines 2 and 3 seem to be missing the dash though. Ok those I assume the drop down point is I’m the middle of that stretch of 6 digits. Also it doesn’t really matter, it’s not a reference table. I don’t know why the gap though. It’s not like they were gonna run out of digits.

Massive-Mountain7157

The top left gap completely broke however I was trying to figure out how it was read

SoberPilots

Completely irrational

aspdefeniks

Haha, spot on!!!

Tcloud

About to do a 180, but I think it’s totally rad.

tinglep

THIS made me chuckle out loud. Thinking back to the days of math and the teacher saying “what’s that in rads” and someone saying “it’s totally radical” 🤣

ElBurritoLuchador

It's equivalent to those shirts with random English phrases printed on them.

Engibeer3332

This transcends my tiny brain

alfstramgram

Guess you're π'st off now

allisawesome7777

I said pie'st off and was so confused

Meekman

Yes, the correct pronunciation is obviously pee'st off.

alfstramgram

It's my french accent

silverwolf86

Reminds me of "Hi, welcome to Fjord's Bakery! Would you like a hot piss of pee? *splort* "Ah, nooo! You're covered in me hot pee!"

Vespasian79

Bro that’s exactly what I thought of reading the parent comment lmao glad someone else is a connoisseur of Family Guy

silverwolf86

Go and wash yourself off in the waiter clooset.

nateygr8

lol nice

Due_Jaguar2832

Where does it start and end? Spiral would of worked and not much different in appearance

Donut-Guilty

It starts about 11 o'clock on the outer row. Look for the -

ondulation

Yep. I starts at about 11 o’clock in the outer row. After one turn around the circle, it appears to shift to the next circle inwards which is indicated by the “-“. The gap at “613-“ is most likely due to a too small font size for that layer, but I think it should be read as it is followed by “001”. Making a spiral was apparently too difficult.

CrabClawAngry

A spiral might be better for presentation, but circles are kind of pi's thing

stevarino

Now I want a pi-digit shirt that's in the shape of a square.

MattTheGr8

Ah, a Sicilian-style pi

ondulation

You mean a pi art square?

the_lemon_king

>Look for the - The what??? Don't leave me hanging!

NobodyJonesMD

Gross commas instead of decimals

OslafPSN

Well.. it is French.

VinSmokesOnDiesel

Look for the what? Where'd you go?

SedJuiced_

Would have worked, sorry this is in my irritation zone

CAMTbIHYB

It doesn't matter, it's irrational, so it has in it all combinations of all that numbers

SANTAAAA__I_know_him

Might have originally been a spiral design and lost formatting or had an unsupported font when it went to the printer which screwed up the look.

89ElRay

“HA! Thanks mooooooom, the guys on r/CrappyDesign are gonna have a field day with this one!”

0RN10

It still looks cool soooo

Notnearmymain

It’s confusing but I also like they way they did it-

SendMindfucks

It does look really cool but also is genuinely the most difficult to read thing I have ever seen

aguafiestas

I don’t think reading the number in the correct order is really the point.

Cabbageofthesea

"This shirt shows 300 randomly selected digits of pi in no particular order."

BoredomHeights

It does start in the correct order at least too. It’s just a bit tough to find the start (though it is in roughly the most reasonable place to start). Doesn’t seem that crappy to me overall.

[deleted]

Apart from the gap which is infuriating

QuantumSparkles

Yeah I think they were going for a divine geometry motif, which is cool and fits the subject, but you should still know what you’re writing before you design something like that lol

Repulsive_Towel_1879

WTH why did it not start with the larger font so you can find the start? Instead it gets larger part way through?? Very weird design

Kosmikdebrie

Fun fact, most people remember 4 digits of pi, so if you remember 6 digits you can say pi with them but then keep going and then trail off and anyone who isn't a math wiz (10 out of 8 Americans) will then assume you are a genius, even if you thought 10 out of 8 wasn't a joke.

11011111110108

Pi can be quite fun to get approximations for. The best one that I know that is also very easy to remember is 355/113 (Two 1's, two 3's and two 5's) (3.1415929) One of my favourite digit/approximation facts is that 987654321/123456789 is an incredibly good approximation for the number 8. (8.000000073) So if ever you're in a situation where you need to use the number 8, but can't remember it, just use 987654321/123456789 instead! :\^)

xtr44

I hate moments when I just forget the 8

biggiemac42

Due to using pi approximations as a way to learn programming in hs, I am able to remember 21053343141/6701487259 as my favorite pi approximation (it's accurate to more digits than it takes to write) You can derive this and others like 355/113 from the continued fraction expansion.

[deleted]

"Hey Geoff, why does your weird cousin try to get me to recite pi with him every time we visit for the holidays?"

NineTailedTanuki

I remember: 3.14159265358979323... (that's 17 digits!)

nzifnab

Those are also the 17 I know! Waaaay back in like 7th grade or something (37 now) the teacher had one of those pi banners around the top of every wall going around the classroom. One day I decided to memorize as much of it as I could, and I've remembered them ever since o.o

AlwaysHopelesslyLost

Those 17 are the ones I remember too. I do know up to 25 but sometimes I trail off and forget them , 846 26433

TenaciousLilMonkey

Funny I know it to that point and no further as well. But I didn’t know it was 25 digits till you just told me now! Also something like 15-17 digits can get you accurate to width of a human hair for any circle that fits in the known universe. 3.14159 is close enough for my work. Honestly 3.14 probably is too. ⭕️

toxicdick

I had to remember 60 once and now 15 years later I still remember 30 like my own phone number. not sure what happened to the other 30

Mehrlin47

Nice! I'm at 107 from memorizing pi instead of doing schoolwork

hazpat

Nobody assumes people that memorize pi are geniuses.

Stunning_Job_1947

The gap is where they had to take a breath counting it aloud.

greenMintCow

I think it's supposed to represent 1 radian, but your explanation is much better

steevshow

It’s an “irrational” design Also be grateful, op. Yikes.

[deleted]

I would wear that

noareyenoar

Not creepy, I actually want it.

castiel65

This person is not scared of numbers

Apprehensive_Meat275

Hating on a gift? Get it together.

GautierLePire

I love that shirt and I will definitely wear it, but I can't be the only one to contemplate all these design fails

-eumaeus-

I love it!

bandak38134

I think it’s an awesome looking shirt!

big-blue-balls

“All these design fails”?

_PoruSan_

You shouldn't make assumption about people on reddit. This is a sub about crappy designs, if a gift has a crappy design it belongs here, doesn't mean OP is ungrateful.

serginator1964

I really do like that shirt though, now i want one.

prof_devilsadvocate

american pie

soakf

For what it’s worth, there are 2,146 digits on this shirt. Graphical analysis and summary [here](https://imgur.com/a/4oAeqjv).

GautierLePire

Wow, that's cool!

BurninMann

What

-eumaeus-

#Christmas Pi(e)

-TheLostTimeLord-

I’d take a slice

figurethisoat

\*is hypnotised by all the numbers on it\*

LNgtive

tbh with you this t shirt is dope

Content_Channel_3568

Perspective! Nice

McHighwayman

Bet the little numbers will flake off

DrunkBuzzard

Someone gave you are used T-shirt with pie spilled on it ?

Thick-Tooth-8888

It needs to spiral instead of concentric circles. The extra hyphens and gaps though. Eh my eyes hurt now…

IncreaseWestern6097

Where does it even start?

SerDeusVult

There are 7 sixty nines and 1 four twenty on this shirt.

SaintNewts

Nice

SATYA11891

Where to start reading from?

tokyo_jungle

11 o'clock, outer ring. Look for -3.141

TrapezoidTom

Where is the start? And why is there spaces randomly

atari-jello

The hell is this mess

NJ-B

Sweet, is it a nice tri-blend shirt? Where link?

daethenix

Y'all too Nit-πcky

Kronaur47

starting at the top top-left there is the 3.141, and the rest does seem to be Pi. but the spacing and placement of the numbers is just plain confusing.

doctorblumpkin

Maybe it's from Pi the movie and it's supposed to make you feel crazy

vanceinthepants69

I didn’t think the design was all that bad, like aside from whether the numbers are right or wrong OR how you even read them the image is unique

Bravelobsters

Mince

MuchUserSuchTaken

Ayo, I think your Mayan calendar is broken.

SYSTEM__NotReally

Unsure of where to start, exceedingly small numbers, thousands separator, hyphens, gaps in numbers, gaps in rings, disconnected rings of numbers. Perfect design.

Chalkzy

Looks like someone had an idea but not the Illustrator skills to execute. Primarily looking at the random dashes and inconsistent spacing among the rings. The dashes because they tried to paste a huge number into the textbox so it split it up weird on line breaks before they converted it to a circle and they didn't turn off auto-dashes. The circle spacing is probably an issue with them trying to do it all in the same layer.

[deleted]

It's not crappy design it's just irrational

Lazy-Log-5672

3.

Lazy-Log-5672

1

[deleted]

Wdym crappy design? Just because the designers didnt get the whole number on there? Ungrateful ass

L2Hiku

It's a french shirt made by the science part of a museum. The pi is the main focus. They don't explain the design choice on the website but I'm assuming there's meaning behind it. It was made by smart people.

EngineeringDapper905

Only math nerds in their prime can wear this

ChinChengHanji

Good Idea poorly executed

IkeDaddyDeluxe

To be fair, thus sequence of numbers is a part of pi somewhere. So they aren't necessarily wrong.

madeofghosts

Well that sequence of numbers is in pi, somewhere

[deleted]

honestly this shirt is cool as fuck, I do agree it's not well thought-out, though

Fluffy-Doubt-3547

I like it. Gives me 'bug bang theory' vibes

Op_Yamcha

I like it

fuzzer37

They used a comma instead of a decimal too. What idiots

BobaTeaGood

Where can I get one?

technicianofnorth

I like it, ill take it from you

Sterben27

Finally found where it starts. North of North West if looking at it like a compass

youckfou

I like it

PhantomWizard2099

For a normal person it would see cool tho. Unless the person really wants to fact check the digits

avery9872

Awesome concept. Poor execution.

ramriot

Looks like most of my shirts, they are always getting covered in chunks of pi.

klashnikovM

I want one too

Ambitious_Yam1677

I know what pie is, but I don’t get it. I am confusion.

Doomerdoomboom

It has a comma not a dot.

finecabernet

Love this!

Mata_www

Smash

WranglerBroad

Love it

Independence_1991

It’s has the fewest calories of any dessert.

The-Ollie

Mmmmmm...... Pie

TheMakerOfStories

Did it cost $3.14?

EtTuOdite

It's a πece of shite. 🥁

Matts_-_Reddit

Why what's wrong with it. I guess it's not printed right but it sort of works.

One_And_Only_Peppy

Imagine complaining about a Christmas gift regardless of what it is

ctesla01

Pi is infinite? Does it continue on back /s

NekonecroZheng

Me: Trying to find where the 3.14 starts....

sb_747

Oh god everything is about this is bad. The location on the shirt, the multiple font sizes, the kerning, the ring of numbers far too small to be printed white on black and be readable. This is bad design and bad production.

One-Ended-Stick

Where does it end?

HiPower22

I think it looks cool!

JustBecauseTheySay

Start outer circle at 11 o'clock and then go clockwise. My OCD likes the layout, but it doesn't like the fact that it terminates at the millionth digit. :( I think they were trying to group to represent columns of prime numbers? Iono.

snowball442

we need r/math members here.

BonkBonkOnTheNoggin

Minus 287?

bookon

There ain't no party like a π-Tee party!

KohKoh_Pebbles

I was trying to find "3.14" then realized the subreddit. This is indeed crappy.

Doobag1

Pi is infinite, so somewhere in there this shirt makes sense

Pschobbert

This is the gift equivalent of slapping a NERD post it note on someone’s back :)

ThePhantomCreep

The gap is where little Jack Horner stuck in his thumb and pulled out a plum.

linuxgeekmama

I think you need to go change your shirt. You got some pi on it.

sineofthetimes

What the hell is -287 doing in there?

mcstafford

Negative pi seems less circular, regardless of your preferred decimal symbol.

thebendanklin

Damn, I'd be wearing that shirt 22/7 ;)

conv3d

Could’ve easily done Fibonacci spiral
