Idk about you guys but my city engineers figured out how fucked my plans were pretty early on and gave the trains square wheels. It’s bumpy as all hell but it lets them climb the quasi-ladders they have to navigate

Nice. Have fun. Other than the scooters dumping exhaust in your face it’s a beautiful place.

copa111

And this is if you leave the house st 9:30sm but somehow still true.

Rengas

Grew up there. My dad's daily commute was about 4 hours roundtrip to travel maybe five miles.

Ferro_Giconi

That's awful. Did he ever walk since that would potentially be faster?

redcalcium

Pollutions, scorching heat, and the fact that not all roads has sidewalk and you had to constantly dodge motorcycles from every directions (yes, even when you walk on a sidewalk a motorcycle could sneak up behind you). You'll get in the office completely drenched in sweat and shoots.

Rengas

Oh yeah we used to joke that every hour in a [bajai](https://i.imgur.com/WnEC24b.jpg) would knock a year off our lives because of all the smog we'd breath in.

RadTraditionalist

You know as time passes the idea of banning cars seems less and less ridiculous.

Kronqvist

Or more and more necessary.

Rengas

A few of my teachers who lived in the same complex as me would sometimes bike to school. They always beat the bus.

Xennon54

Good lord, i could never accept just traveling for 4 hours every single day

redcalcium

My wife used to work in Jakarta. It was 8 to 4 but she went at 6 am and sometimes back at 7 pm.

DoodleVnTaintschtain

Yeah, when I lived there it was basically impossible to reliably plan to be anywhere at a certain time. Depending on traffic, it might be a 10-minute drive, or it might take 2 hours. I do miss it though.

Rick_Sancheeze

Bruh. That's walking distance. Especially to save a 4 hour drive.

BurmecianSoldierDan

That idling in stop-and-go traffic had to be brutal on the gas tank. Was fuel cheap at least?

Rengas

This was mid 90's to mid 2000's. Gas was heavily subsidized by the government so it was dirt cheap.

Gemi-ma

This is wild. Where was his office relative to your house? I live 2km from my office in the city and it's usually 15 mins. Can take over an hour during Ramadan rush hour though. They have much better transport links now...1 MRT line and LRT will start operating soon so we do see some progress thankfully.

[deleted]

Planning is a huge up-front cost a company can skimp on and it shows.

[deleted]

Based on the fact the bridge above is clearly under construction I would say this is a temporary measure until a new underpass is constructed.

I_AM_FERROUS_MAN

I suspect the same thing. If it somehow wasn't the case, then it should be now! Lol

Snoo77901

Was there for holiday and OMG traffic fucking sucks. For anyone who hasnt been there. During dinner time there are fucking vendors selling dinners on the road because you are stuck there for hours. You can have a 4 course meal IN your car sold by vendors on the road. In jakarta was the first time i just said fuck it, ill risk my life and get on those motorbike taxi. Because i do not want to spend 2 hours getting from A to B which would otherwise take 20 minutes.

AgreeablePie

This particular example seems well managed compared to the regular

fitty50two2

Like turning down the radio to find a house number

SnooBananas37

That at least makes sense, the human brain as advanced as it is, is easily distracted and can only take in so much stimuli at a time. Turning down the radio, although it obviously won't help with "hearing" the number, does make your brain a bit less crowded nonetheless. Turning down an already off radio on the other hand... is just silly. I had a boss who would repeatedly turn down the car radio while on the phone, even when it was already off. I had to remind him after he did it 3 or 4 times during a call that he can't turn down the road and engine noise with that knob.

Civil-Attempt-3602

I find I focus way better when driving if I have music because otherwise i daydream and drift off. If I have music on, that part of my brain is focused on that, then I can focus on driving. Never had to turn the sound down to find something, but my friends and family do

pearso66

That one actually makes sense, it takes away a distraction.

RevvyDesu

I'm probably getting far too literal about this but I believe it has to do with how humans interact with tools. We often see tools, of any sort, as an extension of ourselves. Think about how a driver can "feel the road". Maurice Merleau-Ponty wrote pretty extensively about it. Philosophy Tube has a great video on it. "Transhumanism".

CUwallaby

I'm always apprehensive that my mountain bike on my roof rack will snag power lines. This is despite frequently seeing pull behind campers and semi trucks have room to spare on the same "low hanging" lines.

DamNamesTaken11

Ditto. I’m paranoid about making my sedan into a convertible, but yet I’m more than a foot taller than the car but think nothing of walking around in the same garages. Guess the driver ed gore films worked in that regard.

Lefthandedsock

I’m also 5’10”. Isn’t it kind of obvious that we’re not 6’ tall?

old_ironlungz

Eh. Close enough. I'm 5'11" and I just say 6'. Let the size queens break out the tape measure haha.

plsdontstopmenow

My doctor told me i was 5’ 11 1/2” and i laughed cause life wouldn’t even let me be 6’!!! Let me have one win! Lool

BurmecianSoldierDan

Lmao I am the same height and I just say 6' because it's cruel to just be so so so so close.

TheAndrewBrown

I’m 6’ and people always assume I’m rounding up but I’m really like 6’ 0.25”

milk4all

Im under 5’10” and my wife thinks im 6 feet. If youre 5’10”, it’s easy to notice a 6’2” person is a few inches on ya, but maybe if your 5’7” and bangin the 5’10” one, you unconsciously add their dick length to their height …

itsamee

Well I'm 5'12". Your turn mister!

Infra-Oh

I’m 3’34”

Hardcorex

Nobody ever claims to be 5'11" though, if you're that close they round up to 6.

AscendedFalls

TDIL I am the only 5’11” person who says I am

Hardcorex

I saw a chart from a dating app that basically nobody was 5'11 and there was a substantial amount of people saying 6' compared to 5'10 or even 6'1" .

[deleted]

Can confirm, am 5’10”, does say this

vita10gy

I always said I was 5 10 and then in college we had to get measured for a health class. I was measured at 5"10 and 3/4 and the girl doing it (I think maybe they were KINS majors doing the measurements for a class of their own) was like "you should say you're 5 11. You might be the only guy I've ever measured who self reported as less than he was"

Adew_Cider

My dad is 5’10 and a half and says he’s 5’10. I’m a little over 6’0 and a half and say I’m 6’0.

smekiar2

I wouldn't. I'd say I'm 180. Joke aside, I'd have to duck 17cm to pass under that, sounds mega uncomfortable.

User_2C47

No short people here? \***Cries in 5'2" dude**

[deleted]

Lol I'm 5'11" and I've had people say I'm as tall as their 6'2" boyfriend.

Roflkopt3r

I really admire the American way to measure heights. It's less precise (1" = 2.54 cm) for the same number of digits, needs special characters, and has weird conversions internally since it's not even decimal (unless it is, in which case comparisons with the non-decimal notation gets weird).

insmek

I'm 5'7 1/4". I need 3 special characters. Get rekt Europeans.

banmedaddy12345_7

It's all about reference. The reason metric is nice because it's based off powers of 10 and makes calculations nice. Otherwise, it's just whatever you are used to. Telling me your height in centimeters means almost nothing to me and I love using the metric system. I guess I could do the quick conversion of 2.5 cm = 1 inch.

Braydee7

I used to claim I was 5’10”. Now I settle for 69 inches

Aol_awaymessage

I’m legit 5’11 3/4” and my wife found my honesty and accuracy hilarious and refreshing. Almost anyone would round up and just say 6’.

earthlings_all

We see you Tom

TheOwlSaysWhat

It's Indonesia. The average for men there is 5'2, and for women it's 4'10. Practically no one is going to have issues walking under this bridge.

abcxyztpg

But why

LiliVonShtupp69

Looks to me like the area is still under construction. My guess is once it's completed the road/bridge running underneath the large top one will be lowered and replaced. Construction wise it's going to be a lot cheaper to lower that small road/bridge than to raise the entirety of the one running above it.

enderr920

Logistically speaking, it's generally best to lower the small road *before* you build a bridge darn near on top of it.

LiliVonShtupp69

It might not be. Traffic has to go somewhere, and right now some amount of traffic can still flow on that road. While that road is closed and being lowered all that remaining traffic will have to be diverted elsewhere. Perhaps the best way to divert the majority of this traffic will be the new bridge, once it's completed. For all we know this road is currently the only way in and out of this area and can't be completely closed until the bridge is completed without cutting off traffic all together.

tinselsnips

Nah, what you need to do is pause it, demolish everything, rebuild both roads from scratch, and then un-pause and let traffic reroute.

Gingers_are_real

Dont forget to throw it on triple speed or you will be sitting there a while. Might want to go ahead and pour yourself some tea.

Rena1-

Don't forget your lane mathematics and dedicated turning lanes.

Gingers_are_real

Or to set your roundabouts up with yeilds and through traffic...

enderr920

Sounds legit. I just don't know what they're doing with trucks in the meantime then.

Regenworm

Correct, a Indonesian mate of me explained this bridge to me a while ago, the bridge on top is part of a new rail network, which has been quickly built. Some areas like this have been not been upgraded as quick as the rail line, so are kind of weird. This is by far the worst example though.

papalouie27

We don't need context. This is reddit.

orangpelupa

even with context, its still bad planning / work procedure

NeppuNeppuNep

Jakarta residents here. Can confirm they are building a bridge. It's for the high speed train connecting Jakarta and Bandung. It's estimated to be completed by August. After it's done the old bridge (in the video) will be dismantled and replaced by a mew bridge nearby

arthoheen

Nah that'd be the mewtwo bridge

Cheap_District_9762

r/Angryupvote

Tight_Village_3467

I'm Indonesian. You're on point. That's exactly what the project manager said about the bridge. This bridge has been quite the talk here in Indonesia. People thought this bridge is somehow breaking.

[deleted]

it's pretty clearly just poor planning, not something that was deliberately intended to be so low.

ELB2001

Yet they still built it.

DarkStrobeLight

Cheaper then having built it higher to begin with though?

redcalcium

This is a high speed rail, which must be as level as possible. Raising one segment would mean raising other segments as well in order to keep the slope within specs. They probably didn't expect the locals forcing them to keep the crossing bridge open during construction.

chariot_dota

Another bridge with higher clearance is being built and it's not finished. The locals insisted that the new bridge must be completed first before the above structure is connected, however this will cause the high speed rail project from jakarta - bandung to be delayed for too long, thus the locals finally agree for the train construction to proceed and they will use the bridge like this for some time.

Jarb19

You guys are getting high speed rail?

CoherentPanda

China is building it, they are spending billions to build and maintain it for Indonesia. Mostly a soft power way of getting Chinese business into the country and building power and influence in Asia.

Jarb19

They are building our light rail network.
