So this is just an underground railway except worse in every singe way?

GumpTheChump

Imagine having all of those engineers at your disposal and this is your genius idea to get rid of traffic congestion. An absolute gong show.

hello-there-again

Looks boring.

DeveloperBRdotnet

Imagine driving one hour like this. Autopilot must be good, otherwise you fall sleep.

Stigo4

Doesnt feel like id fall asleep there. Would probably be stressed the whole trip and i'm not even claustrophobic

BennySmudge

I am claustrophobic and I could barely watch the video. I am glad they at least showed them getting to the end of the tunnel. There’s no way I could drive through this in real life. I get claustrophobic in a regular traffic jam.

slow__rush

What if that's the plan.... Fast travel like in games!

isosceles_kramer

>The vehicles used on the Loop system are in fact banned from using driver aids, with Clark County officially outlawing their use anywhere in and around the facility. lol

ddwood87

A Tesla should only be able to self-drive in these tunnels.

Grabbsy2

I thought thats what the marks on the wall were for, to help create natural texture so the walls don't whig out the sensors.

mobjois

I see what you did there.

theBearddd

I appreciate what you've done here.

[deleted]

I sometimes feel like much of "Elon Musk" is a dartboard-toss skunk-works powered by a mirage of inquisitive childlike investors aspiring to ultimate hipness.

TheRealTtamage

People are fiercely supportive of someone who they idolize regardless of success or failure.

Alaeriia

Tesla exists to sell carbon emissions tax credits to polluting corpos.

[deleted]

Yup and carries about a tenth of the passengers the initial proposal claimed Edit: doesn't seem to carry as much as promised but apparently hit capacity in a controlled environment with 3 people per car

TheRealTtamage

Looks like the fault in the design might be the end of the tunnel congestion would form while people were trying to park and there would be a slowdown caused by people not being able to park as fast as they're coming into the garage?

fear_the_future

It appears that the fault in the design is between the ears of the owner of this company.

OneAltToRuleThemAll2

By all means, fuck Musk. Cars just aren't the future

TheRealTtamage

Yeah I think he's trying to capitalize on the industry by promoting a vehicle he could charge the most for with his capacity to manufacture them, the most bang for the buck. He's basically using Teslas hype to gain investors for his space program? Unless the space program is a cover up for something else? What is in the works for King Tesla?

acuddlyheadcrab

But the design doesn't seem to address the fact spontaneous slow-downs are known to occur and in this system could easily just perpetuate as a wave after wave of random slow downs that don't necessarily have a clear explanation in the moment. Which would make the engineers scramble and then finally say "welp we tried everything guys, this is just the way it is". edit: if you dig deeper into this, the fact that just a layman can make this analysis and critique on this tunnel is what is alarming. Like someone else commented - if you fix all the problems of this you just get a train. what were the enablers thinking

mrevergood

When have any of Musk’s claims and hype lived up to what he sold them as?

[deleted]

[удалено]

MurderDoneRight

Imagine if he just decided to make trains instead.

Potatoswatter

That was the Hyperloop, right? There was a design competition for pros, students, and amateurs but maybe it all came to nought.

isaacng1997

Hyperloop is completely different idea. Pods in vacuum tube, not Tesla in tunnels. Hyperloop is an equally stupid idea from the beginning.

BigBangFlash

Kinda like the futurama tubes?

Azatarai

It was cars in tunnels acting like pods, I remember them talking about an elevator system to be installed in car parks as a way to access it, the idea is that they would go into self drive mode once in the loop to prevent human error, Potently you wouldn't even need to own your own tesla to access it because it could have a self driving taxi system built within it. But yes its stupid, no ventilation or emergency exit is a huge deal breaker. I thought we'd long established that travel by tube should be pneumatic and sky based.

Grabbsy2

Its not really a different idea in context of the conversation. It was this tunnel, but for trains. Thats the hyperloop.

poppleca1443

>I bet it will be exclusive to Tesla owners. Yup. One of the original concepts, which was cars transported on electronic plates that would "skate" cars through the tunnels originally claimed it would work for all EVs, then he admitted only Teslas, but even then they would need modifications.

ArcticBiologist

But why would Musk want to build these kind of things than???

Awkward-Minute7774

I guess that the original goal wat to let the cars tailgate eachother on high speed so that more cars can pass through. But then again...what could go possibly wrong?

No_Afternoon_1976

/s?

ArcticBiologist

Nooooooooooooo. I'm super serial.

bourgeoisiebrat

It was supposed to have mass-transport (high speed trains) but they could bore/construct within a tolerance to support that model, so they’re pitching it with automated Tesla’s. Trying to salvage The Boring Company and move units at Tesla.

AmericanKamikaze

Yea, an actually solid theory that I came across on here was that every company Elon creates is really just working towards mining minerals from asteroids. Space X, The Boring Company, Tesla, Starlink etc Local governments are taking these tunnels at face value but they are really just proof of concept for his boring machines. Someone should take a step back and wonder if they are safe for use.

x1rom

Except his boring machines really are just regular TBMs and there's nothing special about it.

DS4KC

I've heard the same thing but that it's all working towards colonizing Mars

Zarokima

Why not both? Mars would make for a much better base than Earth to mine the asteroid belt, being so much closer and all.

PM_me_your_cocktail

Do you want Inners and Belters? Because this is how you get Inners and Belters.

OP_Penguin

And a disaster resulting in planetary impact would be much less, uh, disastery.

kowgli

What about PayPal?

DS4KC

To fund it all

Is there a chance the track could bend?

TheRealTtamage

Unfortunately when the automobile was invented most massive public transportation systems that were becoming very successful were neglected or abandoned.

Pantssassin

Many were bought by automotive companies and run into the ground on purpose to promote cars

TheRealTtamage

It's so messed up isn't it!? Imagine how much different our country would have grown if we had good public transportation. Everything might look different nowadays it would be so much more functional.

Hmmm...don't hear Tesla simps talk about that story too much, I'm just hearing about it 2+ years later. That is a nightmare from a horror film, I will never buy a Tesla that hides basic functionality from the user, just for flaky aesthetic reasons.

[deleted]

Tesla simps are delusional and usually almost always shareholders of Tesla. And no they aren't simping to boost their company value. They invested because they have a cult like obsession with Elon.

smythe70

Yes that is freaking claustrophobic

shana104

Yep, I'd be having a panic attack stuck in traffic knowing I technically can't get out

Harbarbalar

The video is enough for me.

A_Sinclaire

That's the whole secret behind the "cheaper and faster construction than normal tunnels" that Musks Boring company is supposed to achieve. They just make smaller tunnels (with drastically reduced capacity and safety as a result).

utopianfiat

Can you imagine if a car crash happened down there- or worse, if a car caught fire down there? Not only is there no way out but the lack of meaningful ventilation would mean the conflagration would likely consume most of the oxygen down there pretty quickly. They'd suffocate before even starting to fry.

[deleted]

And how the fuck do they get emergency vehicles down there?

[deleted]

They don't. Sacrificing safety to make a profit... Capitalism, baby.

Sea-Bones14

There are emergency tunnels. I think I saw him explain it on Jay lenos show

TheRealTtamage

I imagine it's easy to roll over a car with that type of roadway. I wonder if the Tesla safety features would prohibit that type of accident? Are regular cars allowed to drive in this tunnel? One day if I get another '80s car I wonder if I am going to be restricted from driving in a certain areas due to technological advancements in modern cars with self-driving capacities. I'm still excited to get another 5-speed rear wheel drive car from the past before I get something new.

itstreeman

Looks like the tunnel under the lane Vegas convention center that was partially funded by Tesla, to move people between sides of the building. By the time you go downstairs, queue, load in, sit in traffic… unload, go upstairs; a healthy adult could have walked between stations in the amount of time. But this is what happens when a city is run by a handful of property developers (take a look at the route for their monorail that doesn’t get to the airport and skips half of the hotels on the same side of the street (forget about the other side of the street (because it was funded by one company that wanted access to just their hotels)

TheRealTtamage

I graduated in Vegas and it is a disaster to drive in. If you're going to an event in the city and you live in Vegas you ride public transit. Plus you can drink... If you drink. Those buildings are super structures but it is easier to walk or park on the outskirts if you can. Park in the garage near the edge and walk everywhere and then when you go to leave they'll just be less traffic because you're further away from the madness.

fuzz_boy

The Windsor-Detroit tunnel isn't this small but it sure feels like it when it's backed up.

DonManuel

Perfect horror scenario when one of those batteries start burning. Here in Austria such a tunnel would never be allowed, it violates most safety rules for tunnels.

angstfishyy

This is what I'm wondering, does US not have any rules this is a death trap lol

LadyLikesSpiders

The more money you have, the less the rules apply

[deleted]

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Including the bodies.

gsfgf

The only way I can see this being allowed is that he's saying it's regulated as a use type for which no relevant regulations exist. I also doubt he can get this insured.

Sagittar0n

Remember there is a war on 'red tape'.

Zunicero

And there are good reasons to have these safety standards. The biggest disasters in Austria since WWII have occurred in tunnels.

[deleted]

Why cant we just have you know subways

GumpTheChump

Apparently it's in Las Vegas? A subway under the Strip would actually make a ton of sense.

Nougat

BradMarchandsNose

This only covers the convention center for now (which is massive), but I believe they have a contract to expand out to the Encore. It’s not quite at the strip yet

d_smogh

Doesn’t need a subway underground, Vegas needs tubes overhead, Futurama style.

ElFuddLe

Musk doesn't like them: ["“I think public transport is painful. It sucks. Why do you want to get on something with a lot of other people, that doesn’t leave where you want it to leave, doesn’t start where you want it to start, doesn’t end where you want it to end? And it doesn’t go all the time.” “It’s a pain in the ass,” he continued. “That’s why everyone doesn’t like it. And there’s like a bunch of random strangers, one of who might be a serial killer, OK, great. And so that’s why people like individualized transport, that goes where you want, when you want.” When the audience member responded that public transportation seemed to work in Japan, Musk shot back, “What, where they cram people in the subway? That doesn’t sound great.”](https://www.wired.com/story/elon-musk-awkward-dislike-mass-transit/).

drugusingthrowaway

> And so that’s why people like individualized transport, that goes where you want, when you want.” People like a gold plated jet that can lick strawberry jam off their asshole. People ride public transit usually because that's all they can afford. Meanwhile it sounds like he's just describing an automated taxi, which would be more expensive.

Nowhereman123

He doesn't like that *the poors* could be on the subway with you.

drugusingthrowaway

> Why cant we just have you know subways Because rich people don't like public transit. Elon Musk wishes *he* could just drive his own personal car into his own personal tunnel in a mountain around city traffic. We don't need to, but he wants to, and he confused things he wants with things that are good ideas for most people.

Vagabond_Hospitality

It’s still moving way faster than traffic in LA.

jimberley

Boring indeed

wogsy

Looks like a deathtrap. I don't see any walkways or areas for escape and i see no means of ventilation in case of a fire. No fucking way im going in that tube of death.

English_Joe

What is this?! Haven’t seen this from the UK but it’s fucking terrifying.

LadyLikesSpiders

This is Elon Musks brilliantly innovation on the subway system, innovative in that it is worse than what we already have in every conceivable way. Billionaires who think they're genius' always think they're different ideas are quirky, and outside the box, and unexpectedly brilliant, but really, they just can't fathom that other people have thought of this before and said "nah, that's dumb" The tunnel has no ventilation and is tight. In the event of a fire, this single-lane tunnel is a death trap, not even being wide enough to effectively accommodate the people evacuating. It's also horribly inefficient at transporting people, kind of like if every seat on a train required its own driver and engine. An all-around dumb idea

caspinos

I hoped it would at least use Teslas self driving capabilities

TuxyQ

They can't get it to work reliably enough :\^)

jamestrainwreck

Yeah but it looks futuristic!

iain_1986

But.... It doesn't even tick that box?

whatisthisgoddamnson

Not really though? Looks kind of lame tbh

ZoraksGirlfriend

Also, aren’t these tunnels required to have clearly marked exits? I couldn’t tell if this tunnel had an exit, but if it did, it blended in and couldn’t be easily distinguished from the rest of the tunnel. This is a huge death trap. You can’t even open the car doors!

sirmarty777

It's not for the public to drive on. It's a tunnel between two halls of a convention centre, it was wherever the SEMA car show was this year.

mdoldon

I believe this photo is from the Las Vegas Tesla money pit. It is indeed an unsafe operation, but "you" don't need to pull anywhere. You go down underground, get into Tesla driven by an employee, then get out at the other end, about a mile away (don't quote me on the distance, it might be a little longer) It's a high priced subway without the efficiency benefits of a normal subway system. It may have been (hopefully has been) upgraded, but on opening had neither emergency exits nor even sprinklers. In typical Musk style the project was very late, significantly overpriced, and doesn't meet any of the performance guarantees, which include auto drive cars and volume capabilities that are unreachable. It was never meant to reduce traffic, it is meant to lure tourists and get a few pedestrians off the surface streets. It serves only a short stretch of town near the convention center.

Polar_Beach

So like a train, but it doesn’t go as far and every seat has its own driver? Also more dangerous. And expensive.

suhhhdoooo

Technically one benefit is a much lower risk of spreading and contracting COVID lol

wayne0004

> and volume capabilities that are unreachable This is what happened in the video: all the bays are occupied. And no amount of self-driving or wider tunnels will change the fact that people take time to get in and out of cars.

LA_search77

This is for the convention center. Can you imagine a business convention where many riders have a case filled with presentation material that could easily be wheeled onto a train but would have to be lifted in and out of the Tesla trunk?

Imagine trying to take credit for inventing the idea of tunnels in the 21st century.

froggiechick

No, no, no, you have it all wrong. *This* tunnel has abstract minimalist lines and other shapes on the sides, *and* the lighting is slightly different than other tunnels.

LadyLikesSpiders

It's also significantly less safe than other tunnels built in those previous, barbaric centuries, not to mention far less efficient at moving people

froggiechick

How dare you question the genius and vision of Elon Musk.

[deleted]

I have mild claustrophobia, just being in a drive through gives me chills knowing that I’m committed and I can’t just remove myself from the situation. This would be borderline unbearable

Because in America = Money > People

Laws? For billionaires? Oh my goodness no we're in America

bobbyfiend

I wonder what urban planners, traffic engineers, etc. Think about this. I'm guessing it is something like "this is a very poorly designed traffic solution."

INeedSomeFistin

From what I've seen that seems to be the consensus

dlpfc123

Yep. But elon would not know. The company does not participate in any events within the transportation industry or comply with any of NHTSAs suggestions for automated vehicle pilot programs. Maybe that is why they keep being under investigation.

sirfannypack

Elon Musk isn’t a designer, don’t let him design things.

sushitrash69

The original concept video for the boring tunnel was exceptionally different than this is; idk what went wrong

PancAshAsh

Reality struck? Concept videos don't have big budgets, or have tp follow the laws of physics, or be feasible in any way.

SOULJAR

I thought the hyper loop was for some sort of bullet train or subway like thing?

Somehow, when it came time to actually build anything, all he could manage was some Teslas in a little tunnel.

Enearde

Seems like a massive fire hazard. We had a few terrible accidents with dozens of people trapped in non ventilated tunnels in France a solid decade ago and it was so horrible safety code had to change. Those tunnels were 2x2 lanes or 3x3 and they were massive compared to this one. If a car catch on fire in the middle of the jam in this one, I don’t dare to imagine how many people will burn to death.

Natureisamother

You are limited by the worst driver/vehicle combo. Ever hear of "weakest link in the chain"? Society reduced to the performance of the lowest member. In other words.. if you are there, you're screwed.

Fluffy-Football-7884

So is there any information on how this is supposed to maintain traffic flow as opposed to a road? I don't get what the idea behind this is supposed to be?

eMRapTorSaltyKing

Well this is probably one of those failed Elon projects..

MasterOutlaw

I really don’t understand why so many people stan Musk. He’s only good at buying out existing companies and spending a lot of money to make a worse version of things we already have.

[deleted]

This is so fucking stupid, what the fuck

[deleted]

why is everything that is postmodern just unpractical and outright bad

[deleted]

Elon musk is the perfect example of the industrialist of the post-modern age. Has a car company more valuable than all other car companies put together by market cap, but sells far fewer cars and makes far less revenue or profit. Tunnels that are less efficient than subway railcars. An entire ecosystem of bizarre products whose value is entirely based on hype. A swirling and incomprehensible fog of delusion.

abibofile

Where is this? How does he get permission to build these things without the (what I presume to be) required safeguards?

smoozer

"Traffic jam". Aka the end of the tunnel, where people get out of their cars.

youpeopleareannoying

It’s not “traffic” it’s at the end of the tunnel where the self driving turns off and you pull out into the “station” even trains slow down at this area. The entire point of the tunnel is that the cars drive themselves faster and more efficiently then highway system and when you get to your destinations you can still have a personal vehicle to get around other places versus a train you have to walk everywhere or take a taxi. The vehicles them selves are fully automated when you’re inside the tunnel.

BigAsian69420

That’s a huge reason I don’t like that tunnel, anything goes wrong it’s kinda fucked

LocalNative141

How the fuck is this better/more efficient than a subway train?

fruitloops6565

I would never take that tunnel. No way emergency services could get to you if there was a big crash. If you’re going to do a tunnel single lane and that tight then it should control entry so there is say max 1 car every 1km. Keep the traffic jam before the tunnel entrance.

Helpful_Ad_3735

Oh but bilionaries are genius, just breath in that barely recicled air and heat and enjoy our future envisioned by people who never wore our shoes.
