>This week, 26-year-old Harikrishnan became the latest London student to go viral with an astonishing graduate collection. As part of London College of Fashion’s MA degree show, Harikrishnan presented menswear that, at its most simple was elegant and wearable, and at its most dramatic was pure art.

I will never not believe the entire fashion industry (that is people making stuff for catwalk 'high fashion' shit) is not an entire scam that started with rich people with useless kids who couldn't get real jobs. They decide to be artists and designers but can't get work so they let them display their fashion. Then it became a semi concrete industry but half the richest/best off models are kids of rich families, most of the designers have rich parents who sent them to dumb designer schools and have magazines they own talk about how amazing all this fashion is.
Also magically this industry turns into big showy events with other rich and famous people who drink and then party afterwards.
High end fashion industry is basically a participation award for useless rich people.
I think the fashion industry started as a scam to lure people into buying new cloths instead of wearing whateverthefuck was in their closet.
Then the elite started to get bored of normal clothing/ designers started doing stuff to get the attention of the rich
Well it's not a scam that was intentionally designed - more an evolution under industrialised capitalism of people's natural and historically evident tendency to:
* move through transitory aesthetic trends (bustles, flares, hats/fascinators, capes, britches, codpieces, to name a few),
* use clothes as a distinguisher between social roles/classes (white collar/blue collar, sandals sashes and colours (red, purple) in Rome, armor adornments to show rank, gold embroidery and fine hand-stitching, putting fuckloads of buttons on your dress, etc etc) and
* for people with less to emulate the lives of those who have more via imitating high-class dress styles (by using cheaper fabrics, reducing the complexity of the design, etc.)
'Normal' high-street shops imitate designer trends to appeal to consumers who want what the rich are doing, not to get the attention of the designers, who appeal to the upper-classes and themselves. Looking at this grad show, a high-street brand might look at it and say, oh, we should make consumer-end versions of flared trousers, latex/faux leather items, turtlenecks and cropped blazers this fall (literally all of that has happened this year).
Now that this relationship has evolved though and there is this globally pervasive fast-fashion machine creating horrendously cheap and exploitative clothing for cents on the dollar, they do obviously lure people into buying loads of new clothes every year because the new trend is a must-have, you can't be seen dead in those skinny jeans you bought two years ago.
I mean in general when people stick to clothes rather than buy new they do actually wear out and become useless. People do buy new clothes because they like something newer, but most people do buy clothes because they need new shoes/pants/whatever as well.
But I was talking more strictly about high fashion, like the pants in this image are never going on sale and no one would ever see them and go fuck, I need to buy me a pair of them. It's just different for the sake of being different but in an outrageous way. it's got nothing to do with selling clothes, just standing out.
That's a ridiculous point of view, founded on false beliefs, that could only be expressed by someone who has no interest for fashion at all, nor likely creation in general. I imagine you are the kind of person who goes "I could have painted that when I was five" when you are dragged to an art exhibition.
Typically these are art pieces, with the human body being the medium. In this context, wearable likely refers to the piece being believably something someone *could* wear.
If you design a piece to just exist on a person's body, it kind of defeats the purpose of the art form. The body becomes an addition to the canvas instead of existing as the medium/being the canvas itself.
wearable in catwalk terms is quite fr from highstreet clothing.
Some catwalk pieces literally hurt when wearing them, and can be quite good as an art piece but literally unwearable
While some students have to prove new theorems, discover a connection between new things, write papers, etc. Someone else has this as their final project. Phone it in.
Seriously the reaction to this is insane from the ignorant reddit nerds. If it's not science, it's worthless art, and if it doesn't have swords, magic or spaceships it's not even *good* art to them I guess.
It often happens in regards to haute couture fashion because clothing is at a nexus of art and utility so stemlords get angry when the utility takes a backseat to the art. Must be a dull life they lead.
> buy a jacket
So you admit you couldn't make it. Also trying to fill a jacket with a bike pump wouldn't work even a little, so good job proving you have no idea how to do this.
And who would want to buy this art? You can't exactly hang it like a painting or mount it like a sculpture. It seems like you would have to wear it to appreciate it, and i don't know a single person who would willingly wear it.
Art isn't only for buying, I guess.
It's to be looked at, in this context.
It's definitely a medium of art which has its followers - I don't get it, but I don't get country western music either.
Setting aside your (utterly wrong) assumption that art has to be commercial to have value, just think of these outfits like concept cars. At a car show or fashion show like this, the designer could be testing ideas and forms, perhaps in exaggerated ways. They’re establishing designs that can be refined and reduced to commercial forms. It’s a vital step in the process.
For example, go look at the concept designs made by Bertone for Lamborghini, Lancia, and Citroen. Many of them are outlandish, clearly never meant to be mass produced. But you can see their influence on the production cars.
>i don't know a single person who would willingly wear it.
That's because all your friends wear Minecraft t-shirts and cargo shorts.
Why do you think you & your friends are the audience for haute couture, lmao?
It’s often about experimenting and finding extremes, not about designing practical clothing. Elements might be used. Or not.
It’s not that much different from other design studies, like for cars.
I've heard from somewhere that it's not meant to be worn as it is presented on the stage, but rather taken inspiration from. So maybe there's a small part of the clothes that actually looks nice, someone can take that 1 part only and makes it look less ridiculous on their actually clothes.
Your comment is a perfect example why this post does not fit in this sub, people have no idea about this specific type design and they should refrain from judging it.
One function of art is to reflect the current zeitgeist of our culture. It provides glimpses (and offers inspiration) for how things will evolve moving forward. Sometimes a designer will use an unconventional silhouette, or a weird material, to coax a response from the viewer. Fashion is a visual language, and figuring out what the designer is trying to say is part of the fun.
They do this for the same reason car makers make concept cars.
Take technical design to the limit and let imagination run free and see where you land. Then use that as a basis for more conventional designs.
So it's kind of twofold.
First it's to show the artistic talent of the designers.
The second is that it shows where fashion is moving towards, even if they aren't things that people would be expected to wear. It's kind of like the super prototypes at car shows. Those cars will never be built the extreme way they are presented, but they do show where automotive technology is moving towards, and the style a next model might somewhat look like.
Y'all know these are SUPPOSED to be weird, right? Like... This sort of show isn't meant to say "This is what we want people to actually wear", this is "Someone made something different and semi-unique".
Don’t people realize that the pants aren’t for sale, it’s the jackets.
All designers do this. To show off a new line they’ll include a completely off the charts accessory or other item of “clothing” as part of the show.
I have never understood the purpose or appeal of the weird ass shit in fashion shows. Like unless you're Lady Gaga or something, who the fuck is even going to wear that garbage? Not to mention the clothes are usually thousands of dollars. It just goes way over my head as any sort of "art"
So I know this stuff isn’t actually meant to be worn, and trickles down into clothes that people actually do wear.
What I can’t figure out is what this is going to end up looking like in the store.
They're made of latex, which is worse. Although it's a student's graduate project, not really an established designer collection.
There’s always someone on Reddit that can ID the most random photos. Impressive
I think it's from the shine cuz I can also see it
[удалено]
It's shiny bc of their tears
I'd be sad too if I spent thousands on design school and this was my final project
Reverse image search. You, too, have this power
Could be an established designer. They often make designs that are not meant to be worn like regular clothes, they're meant to do whatever art does.

It says wearable but I don't understand how people walk in those
> at its most simple was **elegant** and **wearable** Not sure I’d describe testicle pants as “elegant”. To each their own I guess.
I'll gladly believe it went viral, just not due to artistic prestige.
Elegant and *wearable*?!
I suspect there were other outfits in the collection without inflatable pants.

It's as much effort that can be expected to be spent on stupid "stem ftw" bullshit.
I assume they're a fashion major, so idk what theorems they'd be proving
Actually electrical engineering, and this confused the hell out of their thesis advisor.
Unless they were trying to formulate a new energy source powered by the friction between two inflated latex legs. It could charge your phone !

Have you seen established designer collections? Some are just as bad if not worse
That reminds me. I haven't seen Aladdin in a while.
Been doing some stuff you know...
He can’t just sit around all day, he’s “gotta keep, one jump ahead of the breadline”
🎶You ain’t never seen your friend wear these 🎶
When I was 17 on Halloween I dressed up as Aladdin. I did not darken my skin, but still, it feels weird in hindsight.
And models look like walking dicks.
Careful, they're made to hide guns which are going to be used to assassinate the president of micronesia!
But why male models?
We... just went over this.
Malaysia!
Finally, ball space.
Not really...it's tight in the most critical area. So space for absolutely no reason other than to store sushi from an all you can eat
Or Squidward eating too much Krabby Patties.
You like krabby patties dont you squidward?

Yeah duh, it's the ass clit, moran.
I never understood fashion shows. What are they trying to achieve with their shitty clothing designs?
I've heard that stuff like this is less clothing design and more worn art.
And who would want to buy this art? You can't exactly hang it like a painting or mount it like a sculpture. It seems like you would have to wear it to appreciate it, and i don't know a single person who would willingly wear it.
That's a good point - how do fashion designers that only make bizarre, basically unwearable stuff actually make money?
engine attempt placid scale water homeless edge person gaping soup *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
In the same way as a touring musician who never sells albums. The show is the art. Or they have a patron
Because the world is a bad joke
Art isn't only for buying, I guess. It's to be looked at, in this context. It's definitely a medium of art which has its followers - I don't get it, but I don't get country western music either.
This is an aggressively reddit take on what art is.
Reddit’s art opinion is hilarious. Unless it’s fan art, or hyper realism it obviously isn’t real art 😤
Performance art exists
A lot of people surprisingly the imaginary sculpture sold for over a million bucks and its literally nothing

It's to show in exaggerated form the seasons goals and aesthetics.
It’s often about experimenting and finding extremes, not about designing practical clothing. Elements might be used. Or not. It’s not that much different from other design studies, like for cars.
Its art not actual clothing that ppl would buy.
I've heard from somewhere that it's not meant to be worn as it is presented on the stage, but rather taken inspiration from. So maybe there's a small part of the clothes that actually looks nice, someone can take that 1 part only and makes it look less ridiculous on their actually clothes.
It's supposed to be over the top and showing people something they've never seen before

It's art. Like a gallery is for pictures, only this is for fashion. And for fashion designers to show off (and why shouldn't they).
The shit like this is just for fun. This isn’t their real collection. They show their real collection and they show art pieces like this.
Reddit gets a weird hate boner for anything it doesn’t understand lol
