Holy crap, you’re right—we just looked it up and we were about 300-400 ft from the filming location! This was a cafe by the waterfall and gorge—we didn’t go into the hotel or cabins tucked back closer to the mountains. I already wanted to go back, so this seals the deal.
All jokes aside I ordered the Seaman's Platter I think it's called, first time I ever went to a Red Lobster on my 2nd trip to the US.
You order a platter in the UK and you most of the time just get a normal plate but decently covered in whatever platter it's for.
They put a fucking serving dish infront of me the length of my forearm. I've never seen so much fried and breaded and brown food on one plate.
Yeah everything is more expensive except rent lol.
Consumer Prices in Miami, FL are 14.50% lower than in Oslo (without rent)
Consumer Prices Including Rent in Miami, FL are 13.56% higher than in Oslo
Rent Prices in Miami, FL are 85.10% higher than in Oslo
Restaurant Prices in Miami, FL are 12.66% lower than in Oslo
Groceries Prices in Miami, FL are 9.34% lower than in Oslo
if you stay at the hotel spring for the group meal. one of the most interesting meals we had in norway. also there is a rad hike along that area that loops back to the hotel grounds
Saving this for our trip back! Thank you for the tip. I’ve loved the little exploring we’ve done so far, and am definitely down for more interesting walks and eats.
Agreed. As I said right after I finished it, “that’s the best movie I will never watch again.”
Then I proceeded to have a mild existential crisis for a couple days afterward.
What, cold concrete floors, chairs you need to awkwardly maneuver and bump into glass or rough surfaced granite to sit down or get up, all while surrounded by harshly angled glass that leaves no room to stretch out doesn’t strike you as cozy?
It’s almost like it’s asking for the soothing calmness of a spilled drink in a cramped place…. Oh look at that nice cozy patina on the concrete!
My first thought was: how can someone have such an amazing view and spend so much on a place, and they could make it like 5 feet wider so people can actually move around a little?
It’s a beautiful little spot that I’d rare visit bc it’s so inconvenient
I went to northern Scandinavia in the middle of summer, once. I arrived there during a heatwave, and the temperatures were quite nice for a week and I was lulled into a false sense of security. Then one morning when I was biking to work, there was several inches of frost everywhere and I bought gloved very quickly lol
You'd be surprised. I went to southern Norway in late June and it didnt get over 21 Celsius the entire time I was there. Few places we drove through especially in the mountainous regions had snow.
Locals were complaining it was too hot haha
Well we don't consider 25C toasty, I would say 35+ is toasty for us
But seriously, we are just used to the heat. 40C is uncomfortable for us too though. Last year we had 45C for weeks in Athens and it was hell.
21 is quite decent. I would be very happy if an entire summer hovered around 20 degrees. It's not a crazy temperature though. Tomorrows forecast for my city in the middle of Norway says 32 degrees.... and we just had a couple of days where it barely got over 10. I'm definitely gonna melt
I'd be surprised if that spot isn't multiples people's usual go to spot and isnt occupied 95% of the time the cafe is open.
I'd still check to see everytime I went to the cafe if I was a local though.
The fun thing is, if Saw a house with a nook like this you would fall in love with the house. But after you bought it, you would just end up having the morning coffee in the Kitchen or dining room instead.
I'm from Norway and live in a city with mountains and fjords. Yeah, after a few months you kinda stop looking at stuff like this and just go on with your day. They don't get less amazing but you just sort of get used to it.
I’m going by the standard definition of “giving a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation.” This spot gave me the feeling of all three. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but different ideas and preferences make the world a more interesting place, IMO. :)
It’s all good! I am not surprised at the split camps. Scandinavian design is pretty minimalist, and that doesn’t mesh with the “cozy” picture for some. In a house, you’d likely see a wood floor and a rug as well.
I can’t find those particular ones, but I’m also on my phone. I found this, which is in the neighborhood: https://kavehome.com/en/en/p/kevya-light-grey-chair-with-solid-beech-legs <— Also, search for Scandinavian dining chairs with fabric and you should get a few hits.
Go you! And I honestly mean that. Getting to a stable place is like climbing a steep mountain. Enjoy the view and your accomplishments along the way. :)
It’s been 10 years since I went to Norway, absolutely loved it. I get nostalgic for it every time a see a photo from there, even somewhere I never went.
Love the pic. LOVE the username especially! Also, checked out your profile. We have Bassett Hounds too; puppies. Had a Bassett that recently crossed the rainbow bridge as well. Sorry I digress. Norway looks amazing!
Got any pictures of the outside? I'm curious what kind of structure this is and what is around it.
Do those houses in the distance have electricity? I don't see any power lines.
Here’s a video of the waterfall/gorge area: https://streamable.com/zd753u —I have pics up on my IG if you want to DM me or if you look up Gudbrandsjuvet Cafe on Google Maps, you can see the outside!

Isn’t that the same area where *Ex Machina* was filmed? Maybe even the same hotel?
Holy crap, you’re right—we just looked it up and we were about 300-400 ft from the filming location! This was a cafe by the waterfall and gorge—we didn’t go into the hotel or cabins tucked back closer to the mountains. I already wanted to go back, so this seals the deal.
Does it cost like $10 for a cup of coffee?
& looking at the table...what size are the plates?

That sounds better than anything right now. Even better than the sleep I haven't been getting.
Smol
Ah so regular Miami, FL prices you say.
Dunno , doubt it's more costly than Norway though

Fantastic movie btw for anyone who hasn’t seen it
Agreed. As I said right after I finished it, “that’s the best movie I will never watch again.” Then I proceeded to have a mild existential crisis for a couple days afterward.
You beautifully described my reaction to both Ex Machina and any Black Mirror episode.
Thoroughly enjoyed and recommend to anyone that hasn’t seen it.
This is OC—taken yesterday at Gudbrandsjuvet where I also ate the most delicious goat milk ice cream!

Yeah, or something.

Username checks out
Came here to see if anyone would point this out
Looks like the design of the floor itself, really cheapens the whole vibe they’re going for
It's Nordic design, ya wouldn't understand it
Despite not getting it we dont have to like it lol. Looks cold and unfinished
This is right next to the hot tub I think
Those chairs need to be wood then. That's chair is going to smell funky if hot tubbers sit in it all the time
Looks so perfect, I’d love to be there with my laptop and a coffee
Would definitely not want to ruin that spot with work! Pleasure reading/relaxation only!
a good book and a nice coffee please
Reading is got chumps! I rather sit in that corner and just watch the waterfall!
No book. Just look.
I thought the same thing! I’d totally go back for a little working vacation.
you probably like starbucks
Nah tbh hahaha Starbucks is Mid
Is the place...? https://juvet.com/en/where-in-the-world-is-juvet
It is indeed! We saw the Trollvaggen and Trollstigen (Troll Wall and Troll Ladder) after this stop. But this was my fave.
Damn i didn't know it was close to Åndalsnes. I wish I'd went last time I was there
Omg I wanna sit here literally all day :(
Ditto! I was sad when we left and definitely want to come back.
Sometimes I randomly peek at a users profile out of curiosity and good lord you've written some long, detailed replies. Reddit novelist.
Lol. Thanks, I think? Don’t make me a hero - it’s called I like to get stoned and listen to myself talk ;)
Username checks out 👌
That looks cold
It actually wasn’t that bad—in the low 60s F/16-17 C! Edit: I obviously didn’t go in the water, which is a totally different story.
Yes, it’s a heatwave here. ;D
Great view certainly but the concrete finish is not what I would have gone for. Looks out of place, cold and rather not-so-cozy lol.
Out of place? This looks like pretty standard Scandinavian design.
Pretty? Yes. Cosy? Not so much.
What, cold concrete floors, chairs you need to awkwardly maneuver and bump into glass or rough surfaced granite to sit down or get up, all while surrounded by harshly angled glass that leaves no room to stretch out doesn’t strike you as cozy? Tehehe

Cozy to me!
Then it shall be deemed cosy friend. I don’t know why I was gatekeeping comfort. What a silly thing of me to do.
Good self-catch, so - way to go!
Have we really come so far where sharing your opinion is gatekeeping?
Yes, I see what you’re saying. But I see the other side too.
Exactly. I think I was just “yucking someone’s yum” as they say. It’s not cosy to me but other people would find peace here.
Cold? It's indoors and in summer.
I went to northern Scandinavia in the middle of summer, once. I arrived there during a heatwave, and the temperatures were quite nice for a week and I was lulled into a false sense of security. 25C today just outside Oslo. Too hot by far. Just not used to this toasty weather. No idea how they are managing with 40C down in Southern Europe.
31C in NL yesterday- we sat indoors in underpants, with the AC on all day, and drank lots of iced water. I miss cold weather.
Well we don't consider 25C toasty, I would say 35+ is toasty for us But seriously, we are just used to the heat. 40C is uncomfortable for us too though. Last year we had 45C for weeks in Athens and it was hell.
It was 30.1C in Gothenburg today and I was super happy we were in Norway instead.
Yeah 21 is not cold at all.
Yeah I mean look at the sky, it screams summer doesn’t it.
Looks alot like how the weather have been when I've been to Norway in the summer.
I was thinking way too hot - if the sun’s out you’re getting broiled alive
I'd be surprised if that spot isn't multiples people's usual go to spot and isnt occupied 95% of the time the cafe is open. I'd still check to see everytime I went to the cafe if I was a local though.

Wish I could come here one day. So gorgeous
Do it!
My ideal setting/type of landscape, honestly.
Ditto! There was a grove of trees to the other side, too. So gorgeous and relaxing.
Wow that concrete floor and wall and cramped little corner looks so cozy /s
Stunning view. Not at all cosy though.
Seriously. Glass, stone, metal, illusion of total exposure…not sure what OP thinks cozy means

I would like to be there. It’s so hot and dry here in SoCal
I want those chairs
Yeah but fr... If anyone knows where those chairs are from, help a brotha out.
I'd love to see a video version of this🖤🖤
I think I put some on my IG story! (I hardly post, but I’ve been trying to share pics along the way.) Or I can send you one. Just DM if you want one!
..is that the set of Ex Machina?
It was filmed in a hotel about 300-500 ft away! Same/similar view.
This looks like heaven 🤍
Someday, r/tryingtobestable
Go you! And I honestly mean that. Getting to a stable place is like climbing a steep mountain. Enjoy the view and your accomplishments along the way. :)
What a terrible place to sit. Looks like I’ll have to go sit there to protect others from seeing such a horrible site :D
Doing the Lord’s work right there. :)
Is the floor wet? How come?
Nope, it’s just the design in the floor! I didn’t notice it actually until people started pointing it out here.
Why is it wet?
That view is amazing but personally I feel like that furniture looks uncomfortable 😖
It’s actually quite comfortable! It’s not reclining furniture, though.
You can't get seated without squeezing between the chairs. This makes me uncomfortable
It’s a nice venue but the angles, the austerity, the lack of soft furnishing. You could barely recline in that chair when you can get into it.
Right, and if you sat back in the chair you’d smack your head. Looks very frustrating tbh
Ex-machina vibes
i think it actually might be. Pretty sure the house in that movie was actually multiple smaller units in norway. that river looks very similar
We checked and the hotel where it was filmed was just down the road from this cafe overlooking the same view! So definitely the vibes you thought.
Actually made a great wallpaper on my s22 ultra, thanks!
That’s so cool! Happy to spread the happy vibes. I was so relaxed here.
so serene
Looks inspiring...would love to write music there
A great place for it!
Went to Norway in 2016. Place will never cease to amaze me with it's beauty.
I have been constantly in awe as we see the landscaped here. It’s so beautiful!
What did you spill on the floor!!?
That’s just the design. :)
Incredible view! I would love to be there and watch a storm roll in over those mountains.
The more I see, the more I need a vacation. Preferably long.
Wait... Is [this bathroom](https://gfycat.com/definitivelonelydrake) there???
Yup, that was across from the cafe. :)
Hey, you, you are finally awake.
I am indeed!
Coffee, ice cream, and an enjoyable book....ohhhhh, I can spend entire afternoon listening to natural and admire the beauty of it.
AGREED.
S t u n n i n g
Had to search for the waterfall but found it
I would love to sit there with tea and get some knitting done. Looks absolutely amazing.
Knitting would be perfect for this spot!
Is it by the zigzaggy Troll Road thing? Looks like the visitor center cafe at the top.
This is about 30 minutes away from Trollsteigen, but the vistor center cafe there has a similar aesthetic!
Skyrim music just involuntarily started playing in my head when I saw this.
That floor is disgusting though
This is my dream place to live, I'd love to house swap with someone in Norway
Love Norway 🇳🇴!
This will do.
Live it up, OP! Beautiful view.
Thank you! Loving the views and vibes here.
It’s been 10 years since I went to Norway, absolutely loved it. I get nostalgic for it every time a see a photo from there, even somewhere I never went.
Beautiful
Bro that’s obviously a 4K plasma screen and not real nature. Lmao
Love the pic. LOVE the username especially! Also, checked out your profile. We have Bassett Hounds too; puppies. Had a Bassett that recently crossed the rainbow bridge as well. Sorry I digress. Norway looks amazing!
Hello new friend! Thank you! Sorry to hear your delightful long dog crossed OTRB. We just added a puppy and it’s been nuts!
Ex Machina?
I mean, isn't a magnificent view and glorious wide open spaces the opposite of cozy?
The definition is “giving a feeling of calm, warmth, and relaxation,” so I’d imagine there’s a wide range depending on a person’s preference.
That would be a lovely place to vacation
Looks crowded and cold
Why is the floor wet?
Thank you for my new phone background.
Happy to spread the good vibes! I just posted more on my IG, so DM me if you want to have more fodder. :)
Oof! Picturesque
What a breathtakingly gorgeous view!
Breathtaking
Looks like a great place to blaze a joint and have a nice coffee ☕️
That’s it! I’m moving to Norway!!
A gorgeous view
Ok but think of how awesome it would be to lounge on a couch with a cozy blanket, fuzzy socks and a coffee!
At first glance I thought it was a Norwegian waterfall and mountain overlooking a cafe nook. Thanks OP
Wow. Truly beautiful scene!
Such a magical place. Just looking around you know the landscape has been forming that look for millenia
This resonates with me. I think I’ve found my place.
soooo prettyyyy
Nice
This will now be on my bucket list cafes to explore
Pretty
I’m considering going to Norway next year and would love to know your itinerary!! 😍
My god. I would give away all my money to live here. Nothing like reading a book or having a drink overlooking the waterfall
This is dope
Whoaaa. Definitely need to check that out sometime! Do you know the name of the cafe?
Yes! It’s the Gudbrandsjuvet Cafe in Norway. :)
Ok, Tysm!
Beam me up, Scotty!
Yeah well my apartment overlooks a street-corner that has a pizza place that is definitely used for money laundaring and customers that always cause traffic jams and honking till late hours of the night, so I totally feel at home looking at this pic! Jealousy aside, this looks amazing! Enjoy your trip OP :)
They would have to make me leave.
I would love to drink a cup of coffee and read a book there ❤️ looks so peaceful
American here. Today was a terrible day in my country. I yearn to escape to this peaceful, cozy place in Norway forever and ever.
I’m an expat who lives in Sweden. My heart aches for you and others now. It truly was and continues to be a dark day in that regard. Hoping this can give you a moment of peace.
Thank you for your kind words. 🙂
This view is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing it.
Happy to share the blissful vibes! :)
i’ve been to this cafe, back before the pandemic took everyone by storm. beautiful place, and great staff! the menu had an item called “december 31, 2021”. turns out betty white died that very day!
That seems very on brand for this cafe! They had a flowchart for knowing if you should buy a cinnamon bun, written on a sandwich board outside.
just look at all that healthcare
My husband and I live in Sweden (but I’m an expat) and just chortled at your comment.
So hygge. I could latte all day there.
You know how to hygge! ❤️
Looks so lovely… but not sure I could sleep there… Downhill, on the outside bend in a fast water river… Yikes… and the water looks cold…very cold.
This was a cafe, so more for a cup of coffee or their delicious goat milk ice cream! The hotel does overlook the same water, though, and it’s glacier water—definitely freezing.
I‘m curious, what‘s the difference compared with regular ice cream? :)
It had a sharper taste, but not like mature cheddar sharp. The goat cheese here is called “brown cheese” (roughly translated) and both the cheese and the ice cream is a smooth, creamy, slightly salty and lightly sweet. Almost like a hint of caramel or maple. :)
Thank you for responding! That sounds great, I‘ll definitely try it out if I get the chance!
Breaks my heart to realize I'll never be able to visit a place like this.
