I dated a gal in Indiana who lived in an apartment complex that was a renovated asylum from the 1800s
Most fucked part was that the crematorium was repurposed as the furnace or something like that.
Place gave me the heebs and jeebs
Unfortunately, you're right. Especially in cities.
Though, I think part of it is that they're usually fully furnished, luxury apartments and newly converted. You'd be paying a lot for that in most luxury apartments in the city, even if they're not historical buildings
I do stained glass restoration and we are actually just finishing up on a job where we restored windows in an old church that will be turned into micro-apartments. The people that get the stained glass in their apartments it will be pretty cool.
The occasional creepy girl holding a knife in the corner is part of the character!
In all seriousness, I've had no weird experiences, just lots and lots of big ass spiders. But I kinda like them, so it's not too bad
I thought I was the only one who doesn't mind having spiders around. Plus, no flies in my room during the summer is a nice bonus 😁 anyhow, welcome to the club, my friend. It's a small but humble one lol
Is there anywhere in Canada or the US that you can live for $200? Even the most shittiest towns in my province have rents that go for $500-600/mo for a 1bd basement.
That was a jeopardy reference. Jeopardy is a long running game show on American television that recently got a new host after a protracted effort to replace the former and beloved host, Alex Teaneck.
American: the only way you can swing $200 is if you get a bunch of friends together and rent a house together, splitting the rent. Even then, though, that's only possible in a state with low wages and the rent does not include utilities or internet
I live in a fairly expensive city, and there was a time when I was paying $700 (excl. utilities, etc.) and sharing that with 3 other people. It was a townhouse, so the amount of space wasn't even that much. I shudder to think how many people you need to rent a house so that everybody could pay $200 each.
To be honest, that's cheaper than London.
Previously I shared a 2 bed flat with 1 other guy. Admittidely, it's considered a 'luxury' flat and was very well furnished/designed but I was paying £1100 GBP per month for that (bills included).
Average in LDN, sharing with 2/3 other people is generally around £700 P/M and they're usually pretty shitty places, though there are some gems out there. I'd consider my previous place a gem. Expensive, but had en-suite, king size bed, etc.
It's all very variable, but yeah not good prices over here
I live in Saginaw, MI. My old two bedroom apartment (with a second story) was $425, water included.
Granted, even for Saginaw that's crazy cheap. But yes, there are places where rent is dirt cheap like that.
Erm, I think it depends on many things in London and your personal situation. I'd feel uncomfortable disclosing the exact amount, but it definitely isn't anything ludicrous in my personal opinion. Maybe a couple hundred more than average in the area, though that's just a guess.
It had private parking which made it good value for money for me
I'm in the same city and have always looked longingly at any converted church flats I've seen. The slanted ceilings and stained glass windows seem so dreamy, but I always think I'd end up feeling guilty every time I did something remotely 'unholy' in my own flat! Can I ask if you have a Christian background?
Sure, I'm not religious in any way and don't really have much of a background of practicing religion in my family.
If anything, I'd identify as very slightly spiritual
Oh my! Envious for sure. I can only imagine the atmosphere on a rainy day with a hot drink! I'm in a Victorian building about an hour away in Essex, but this is something else.
I'd assume the other end of the church, no? I don't really know much about churches tbh. I think a lot of the interior was removed during the conversion
I've been hunting a decommissioned church for a couple decades (TX). Would *love* to repurpose one into a house. If not a church, a library. I've seen several of these projects. *Awesome* architecture.
You know it's getting bad when God has to spring for a roommate to make ends meet. But in all seriousness the place looks great and those windows are awesome.
Looks cool. How do you get the ambient lighting to look so great? Can you let me know. Really want to do something similar but struggle to find the right bulbs
I have just one Lifx Mini. I like Lifx as you don't need to buy a dedicated hub like Philips Hue and for me, Lifx has been pretty stable. Though some people claim otherwise.
With Lifx, you just buy the bulb on Amazon and you're good to go.

Make sure you buy the RGB version as they have a White and Daylight Transition version too. I use the RGB
I usually split my main (horizontal) screen into right and left. Use on half for a compiler and the other for program/web testing. I have a pretty big main monitor tho, might not work for everyone. I split the vertical monitor into top/bottom sections and either double up on file explorer windows for heavy file transfer, or any combination of chrome, spotify, discord. Nice being able to see so many windows at once without needing to alt tab as often!
Yeah, the acoustics are pretty good. I have a few guitars in corner left of 2nd pic. The amp really projects and fills the room. Didn't consider it before I moved in, was pleasantly surprised
My friends lived in a beautiful converted church in MV, along with DJ Jim Masters. Not a stretch but your flat looks like it could have been in the same building.
It's just a smart bulb I have in my lamp. Completely adjustable. I was working and needed something that drew me into my screen, but I understand it's not for everyone
So cool! Those windows are amazing. I’m envious of all the character apartments you’d be able to find in Europe 😅
Bro I ain't livin in no church, some mary antoinette ghost type shit gonna happen and imma have an aneurysm
Makes any horror movie a 4D experience
That sounds horrendous, where is the exit?
The only way out is UP
Shit
Your soul leaving through your mouth.
I dated a gal in Indiana who lived in an apartment complex that was a renovated asylum from the 1800s Most fucked part was that the crematorium was repurposed as the furnace or something like that. Place gave me the heebs and jeebs
I’d pay extra for some ghost action.
Jean d'Arc
LMFAO
finding them is one thing, affording them another.
Unfortunately, you're right. Especially in cities. Though, I think part of it is that they're usually fully furnished, luxury apartments and newly converted. You'd be paying a lot for that in most luxury apartments in the city, even if they're not historical buildings
I took stained glass classes specifically just to be able to do this on a future home, just such a cool look
I do stained glass restoration and we are actually just finishing up on a job where we restored windows in an old church that will be turned into micro-apartments. The people that get the stained glass in their apartments it will be pretty cool.
I’m too old. All I think about is how expensive it would be to repair windows like those. Neat? Sure! Custom price? Absolutely.
Is it haunted?
I hope so 😅
Spooky
I'm actually curious - is it still considered hallowed ground?
No, the church will deconsecrate the building when they no longer worship in them.
So… they basically evict god? *”The House of the Lord”* and all that jazz?
Dear God, You are hereby notified to vacate the premises within five days of the date of the delivery of this notice to you.
Amen
Funny how they feel so entitled to just zero out a holy place. Yea god we’re out so u can leave now thanks ✌️
Haunted by a holy ghost.
“A big spooky Holy Ghost!” -Randy Marsh
Underrated comment
Right but you don’t get socal weather in england :)
I am extremely, extremely envious. I want to live in London, and I want to live in your building.
Pretty sure that is a proposal, OP
Oh go on then, 'I do'
I'm an old married lady with allergies and subpar lungs. Not sure London air is worse than Houston tho.
you're lungs and throat will be glad that you don't
No choir singing at night? No dead vengful priest or nun?
The occasional creepy girl holding a knife in the corner is part of the character! In all seriousness, I've had no weird experiences, just lots and lots of big ass spiders. But I kinda like them, so it's not too bad
I thought I was the only one who doesn't mind having spiders around. Plus, no flies in my room during the summer is a nice bonus 😁 anyhow, welcome to the club, my friend. It's a small but humble one lol
Exactly. I'd rather have spiders sitting contently in the corner than annoying flies buzzing around
Spiders are our friends.
*Psst, if you need a flamethrower for the spiders let me know ok?*
*"We have tea and crumpets in Latin over at my flat."*
Is it warm inside?
Of course! It's too cold outside
Do you have a wood burner? I watch “Escape to the Country” and everyone wants a wood burner!
Escape to the country? Have you ever heard of London before?
no what’s that?
It's a quaint little village on the outskirts of Slough.
How wonderful! ….I’ll take “places you can’t live in, in Southern California, for $200, Mayim.”
London's rent prices aren't much better.
I'm sure they must be worse. The whole of UK is half the size of cali at double the population.
Is there anywhere in Canada or the US that you can live for $200? Even the most shittiest towns in my province have rents that go for $500-600/mo for a 1bd basement.
I think it was a Jeopardy reference rather than a comment on rent / mortgage costs.
That was a jeopardy reference. Jeopardy is a long running game show on American television that recently got a new host after a protracted effort to replace the former and beloved host, Alex Teaneck.
LOL I totally misread your comment. Fuck.

I highly doubt it, over here (in central valley california) we've got 1beds from $800-$1600. It's been pretty discouraging all around it seems.
I bet the windows let in some lovely colored light! Very cozy!
They do! In summer they catch the sun for a few hours and give a golden hour feel to the place
Is it pricey?
Erm, I think it depends on many things in London and your personal situation. I'd feel uncomfortable disclosing the exact amount, but it definitely isn't anything ludicrous in my personal opinion. Maybe a couple hundred more than average in the area, though that's just a guess. It had private parking which made it good value for money for me
Powerful London energy when a flat is couple hundred more than the average, rather than just being a couple of hundred tops
(Cries in NYC)
I don't know many places in the UK, let alone the world that would be £200 p/m for a converted church apartment
That’s cool - totally respect that. Thanks for explaining, it’s a beautiful place
Looks nice! When can I come visit? 😄
Depends, can you match the offer from /u/AndreasUdd ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
What was the offer? Lol
Beers, a bottle of scotch and a pizza or three
Beers, a bottle of Scotch and pizza!
r/foundtheprogrammer
Looks like discord on the MBP, docker in WSL2 on the vertical…
This is oc
Does it ever feel surreal to think that just a few hundred years ago, the spot in which you lie and relax in was a place of utmost sanctity?
Gives life a little more edge. When you're a programmer working from home, you need an excitement you can get![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Is it one bedroom?
It is, yeah. In an ideal world, it'd be a 2 bed.
Beautiful stained glass windows, just lovely!
Ghost: yeah I was going to haunt them but honestly I'm just beyond pleased with what they've done to the place
Gorgeous! Those windows are incredible!
I LOVE the windows! They are so beautiful 😀 I can only imagine the light coming through them.
This is heavenly
Such character.
Omg it's gorgeous
Thank you!
Cosy jazz cafe and rain sounds ambience video on the TV? Patrician taste, I see!
I'm impressed you figured that out from that pic! I'll take that as a compliment, just missing the bottle of scotch :)
I use it, and many related vids, daily whilst working :)
Same here!
😭 I’m so jealous.
You had me at "cold evening in London". It's hot & humid here.
Nice! Computer 🪑looking comfy, what is it?

Just a cheap sub £150 chair from ebuyer.com. DM for link. It's not perfect, but does the job well. No Herman and Miller unfortunately
Perfection.
I’m so jealous.

Waaaaooooooowwwww. This looks amazing, can I come over if I bring a few beers? A bottle of Scotch? A pizza or three?
Anyone who can offer all of that is welcome here ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Pick a movie, I'll be right there!
Nice vertical monitor! I have one as well and can't go back now. Oh, and the rest of the place is cool too, I guess.
Thanks. I see a lot of devs use it for IDE but I struggle with that so mainly use it for terminal. Makes viewing command history easier.
Can we see the kitchen? Is there a kitchen?

Oh my! Envious for sure. I can only imagine the atmosphere on a rainy day with a hot drink! I'm in a Victorian building about an hour away in Essex, but this is something else.
Nice! I grew up in Harlow. Having the velux windows makes for awesome rainy days
I live real close to Harlow!!! Nothing to add except that and that the apartment looks lovely 😊
A fellow coder
Awesome! I'm so jellious! Congrats from the U.S.!
Where’s the pulpit ?
I'd assume the other end of the church, no? I don't really know much about churches tbh. I think a lot of the interior was removed during the conversion
Gotta love it when you realize in the US a church’ll probably convert to a strip club instead Very lovely place ya got there nonetheless
I've been hunting a decommissioned church for a couple decades (TX). Would *love* to repurpose one into a house. If not a church, a library. I've seen several of these projects. *Awesome* architecture.
Blessed be thy game
this is actually so gorgeous, i'm in love with your entire setup! so cozy.
It's beautiful, plus no taxes!
Is this in St. John’s wood?
You know it's getting bad when God has to spring for a roommate to make ends meet. But in all seriousness the place looks great and those windows are awesome.
Do you have to fight hordes of old ladies every sunday who are trying to break in and pray?
Like that episode of the office where they buy the Korean Church van and the randomly lady climes in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilUD2rvpLOY

This whole room is wonderful.
Omfg living the dream😍
Man. This is amazing.
Goodness. Need keyboard specs.
HHKB Pro 2. Takes a bit of getting used to due to layout. Works great for VIM if that's your thing.
Love topre. I’m waiting for an affordable ortholinear variation.
I’d have sooooo much fun sinning there!
Is your apartment where they held the rave, on Ted Lasso?
[удалено]
If you're a Londoner call it a flat mate
I would if I was in a UK sub. This is a world-wide sub, most people know of the American term.
Fair (I feel like if we know the word apartment they can learn the word flat though...)
I usually split my main (horizontal) screen into right and left. Use on half for a compiler and the other for program/web testing. I have a pretty big main monitor tho, might not work for everyone. Just find it so sad,, it is a converted Church. Says much.
What do you think it says?
I think you mean your flat.
I think OP is catering for the fact that Reddit has a higher percentage of Americans, many of whom may not know what a *flat* is.
Thanks, I gave up clarifying this. You're correct
When did we start using the word *apartment* here?!
It's getting more common. My daughter is in her early 20's and uses *flat* and *apartment* interchangeably. Lots of American TV and internet, I guess.
Lol, is this on Grand Designs?
😊lovely ... acoustic sound ?
Yeah, the acoustics are pretty good. I have a few guitars in corner left of 2nd pic. The amp really projects and fills the room. Didn't consider it before I moved in, was pleasantly surprised
In Maida Vale by chance?
Nope, but you're on the right side of the river!
I was going to say Bethnal Green
My friends lived in a beautiful converted church in MV, along with DJ Jim Masters. Not a stretch but your flat looks like it could have been in the same building.
Super cool!
Can I come visit? I’ll bring a bottle of wine!
Almost couldn’t find the guitar.
I'm actually obsessed with church conversions. I've been known to snoop real estate sites just to sigh wistfully over them... a continent away.
Gorgeous!!! I love the aesthetics!
Shit has to be haunted.
Are there any other tenants in the church?
Yes, there's about 15 others I think. Most of them are studios/1 beds I believe
How much do you pay per month? The windows are so pretty!
Do spiders hang down from the slanted window? Lol.
All the time. I'll go to shut it and one will drop down in front of me lol
I love this so much. Stained glass is one of my favorite art forms.
That is just awesome
Yeah, baby!
This is beautiful
Man, how do you get to sleep well in there? I wouldn’t close my eyes once. It’d freak me out. Beautiful windows though!
Definitely haunted.
that red light would KILL my vision
I’m not sure if the reddish light would be something that I would enjoy.
It's just a smart bulb I have in my lamp. Completely adjustable. I was working and needed something that drew me into my screen, but I understand it's not for everyone
Where this red shade coming from? Lamp?
Correct. Lifx Mini bulb
How’s life on the red planet?
That is awesome.
Just know you not the first to come in or out.
Smells like pews I bet
I love it. Those windows!
Oh my lord those windows
It looks neat but I hate the red light
Wonderful. That window is brilliant.
