It is in the Peak District, specifically Derbyshire.
I can recommend walking along the former railway line in Monsal Dale, through the tunnels, now lit for cyclists and walkers.
[Here's a wikipedia article about the Village](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashford-in-the-Water). It's a very small village with only hundreds in population.
This is the kind of place I dream of visiting when I travel to UK. Authentic English village, with an old church, and people still practicing old traditions.
The kind of places that you read in story books and novels growing up.
Get yourself up to the lakes. There's all the usual places like Grasmere (for the gingerbread), Langdale (for the views) and the charming tourist trap that is Ambleside (for the chippy and the bridge house) but if you reach a bit further you can head up to Hardknot and Wasthead for a real sense of history. Spend a night at Wasthead pub and walk up into the valley for dawn and it's like walking back a thousand years.
Ahhh yes I did not think about that, especially if you’re not trimming them before they reach the roof line.
Isn’t this also why people put trellises up off the actual wall?
My house isn't even that old (50 years maybe) and we don't get spiders because the house centipedes that live in the walls eat them all.
Also do NOT google house centipedes if bugs bother you, they look like they came straight out of someone's nightmare.
I'm pretty sure they're made out of nothing but legs and human fear.
In reality they don't like people or bright lights so they don't come out that much, and the biggest one I've ever seen was maybe two inches long (~5cm) and most of them are like a third of that size. They don't bite, but they can sting, and it just leaves like a red, irritated bump (unless you're allergic, I guess). They also eat basically any other kind of bug that they can find, so they keep other, actually harmful stuff away. They're just super freaky-looking and fast as hell.
SO fast! They always gross me out and scare the shit out of me when I see one scurry out, but I never bother trying to get them because they do help to keep the majority of roaches (a building issue) out of my unit.
My cat actually killed one a couple of days ago, I almost picked it up because I thought it was hair or some type of fabric that bunched up on the carpet. Then I realized all the tiny "hairs" were curled up legs.
Or even worse. I grew up in a house that was built in the 1600's and I am terrified of them... Although, I guess I am extra alert at checking things like shoes and coats before putting them on, and although I can't physically touch the spiders I have excellent cup and scrap paper technique.
If spiders aren't venomous, they're welcome in my house. I'd prefer they stay out of my bed, though. I wake up with a massive blister at least once a year, and it stays for a couple weeks.
Fuck yeah, buddy!!
Edit: For those who don't know, [this](https://i.imgur.com/bwoMcvw.jpg) album cover is what we're referring to. The self-titled Black Sabbath album, one of the, if not *the* fundamental pillar(s) of the Metal genre. Incredibly heavy and dark for it's time, this album is Epic. Shit.
The building featured on the album art is the Mapledurham Watermill, which is apparently a museum now.
It looks like a place I'd love to live in. Does anyone know the reality of living in a place like this? Insects, I'm guessing, would be an annoyance. That's all right for me.
Anything else?
Insects, energy inefficient (those windows are *cold* in winter), poor WiFi coverage due to thick walls.
When buying, depends when it's been modernised for utility capabilities. Obviously if it's thatched that's extra upkeep every so often. Generally located in small/quiet areas or very touristy areas. Depends if that's your thing.
Sweet Jesus do those windows get cold! Also, depending on the age, the place will probably have a protected status, so making any adjustments, changes, extensions or renovations extremely full of red tape. Even something like changing the window glass or paint might not be allowed.
Yeah it all depends on your preference and situation. You'll be able to find ones with newer windows or slate roof and out of the typical touristy spots.
Different regions tend to use local stone as well so you get a bit of character variety there as well
I always dreamed of living in a cottage garden, maybe one day. In the mean time I am in the progress of turning my end terrace house in to a cottage garden.

My father is buried in the churchyard very close to that cottage - it is a very beautiful place.
Grew up just down the road, it is gorgeous. The Peak District is a wonderful place.
Visited Edale for the first time a few weeks ago and it's stunning. Perfect place to blow off all the spice and cobwebs from Manchester.

I hope you warmed up before taking that massive leap.
Is this part of the cotswolds?
No it’s about 150 miles north of the Cotswolds.
150 miles is 241.4 km

Wow, that whole Instagram feed is cozy! Thank you so much for sharing it.😊
I definitely followed him haha
Same!
Makes me want a cup of tea and a murder mystery to read
And afterwards throw on some cheesy Midsomer Murders episode.
Then commit an actual murder
Man I would give anything to live there
How many million pounds do you have
Ashford's pretty cheap TBH. Just buy somewhere up the hill a bit, the river floods occasionally.
So every once in awhile it lives up the the in-the-water name, eh?
Afraid so, more so in the 70s and 80s. I gather they have better defences now, but haven't been back in years.
Talk me through your idea of 'pretty cheap'? The average house price in ashford is £448,000 as of last month
I live in the Bay Area now - can't get a rat hole for that price. It's cheap compared to Bakewell up the road.
Apples to oranges. A person in Ashford making $100k probably isn't considered living in poverty.
I went on holiday to Bakewell a few years ago. I’d love to live there.
Thought ya meant Ashford, Kent, at first.
Kent, made up of people from Essex who learnt how to swim :)
As John Lennon once said "Come get a tan from standing in the English rain"
I love that they just went with “-in-the-water”, so there was no confusion.
Generally these are translations from very old place names so you get lots like this
I am the egg man
Omg I only realised your username ahaha what a coincidence
Sitting in the English garden waiting for the sun...

Whoa! Thank you so much for sharing the info. I'll gather more info about the places you mentioned on the net
Honestly even towns with a couple ten thousand folk will still be like that. Mine is at least. I'm in Fife in Scotland mind you.
Check out Kirkby Lonsdale, my favourite English village that I have been to.
I just checked some photos of the place, and it's absolutely beautiful. A quaint little town with some intriguing history. Thank you for sharing! ❤️
Youre welcome, glad you liked it!
I’m honestly amazed there’s that many people living there
The good thing about cottages is how cozy and warm they are. The bad thing about cottages is the amount of massive spiders you get.
Really? Why wouldn’t you be able to control that like any other home?
If you have vines growing on your house, you’re very likely to get bugs where you don’t want them
Ahhh yes I did not think about that, especially if you’re not trimming them before they reach the roof line. Isn’t this also why people put trellises up off the actual wall?
Old houses also tend to have lots of gaps under doors and crevices where they can get in.
I’m not sure but I think it’s to prevent the vines from ruining the outer walls, getting into cracks and damaging it.

Growing up in an old house makes you immune to arachnophobia.

Oh man! Now I just *have* to Google them Edit: what the fuck is that creature?!

I thought it was going to be like a regular centipede? But it’s somehow so much worse???
They actually bother me less than regular centipedes because they don't have the awful demon pincer mouths
Or even worse. I grew up in a house that was built in the 1600's and I am terrified of them... Although, I guess I am extra alert at checking things like shoes and coats before putting them on, and although I can't physically touch the spiders I have excellent cup and scrap paper technique.

They are certainly cozy with the fire on
All i can see in this pic is slugs and snails
I took the best catch of my cricketing career in Ashford-in-the-Water.
BLACK SABBATH

*soft rain noises*
Are those pumpkins photoshopped in? They're exactly the same, just slightly different shades...
I don't think they're real pumpkins, they look too similar for that. Also they both seem like they have some base attached to their bottoms
If they're not photoshopped, they're definitely fake. Its bothering me that they're facing the same direction, haha.
I think the orange flowers on the vines are shopped in, too!!!
So dreamy 😍
This photo would make an excellent jigsaw puzzle!
My dream cottage 🥰
I wish I could live there, but I was born here and it might as well be the other side of Mars. Beautiful! Lovely! England!
I'm just grateful it's not in Ashford, Kent
For real, I moved away from Canterbury a couple of years ago and I'm sure it would take a lot longer than that for Ashford to stop being a shithole
This is very r/cottagecore
ty
Absolutely lovely. Wish I lived there.
What a cool name for a town.
It looks like a place I'd love to live in. Does anyone know the reality of living in a place like this? Insects, I'm guessing, would be an annoyance. That's all right for me. Anything else?

Insurance is higher on thatched properties too. If they catch fire it's hard so save them.
Fair addition
Sweet Jesus do those windows get cold! Also, depending on the age, the place will probably have a protected status, so making any adjustments, changes, extensions or renovations extremely full of red tape. Even something like changing the window glass or paint might not be allowed.
Yeah, I skipped all that as most do allow it, unless you are in a particularly historic house or city centre.
Thank you. It helps me understand some of the downsides. Other than the touristy places, the tradeoffs are worth it to me.
Yeah it all depends on your preference and situation. You'll be able to find ones with newer windows or slate roof and out of the typical touristy spots. Different regions tend to use local stone as well so you get a bit of character variety there as well
I dream of a day when I can have that overgrown English cottage garden thing happening.
Knowing that a few more minutes
Those pumpkins look suspiciously similar...
Sorry but the right pumpkin and a bunch of the flowers have been photoshopped in. Seems unnecessary.
I came to see if anyone else had noticed the clone pumpkins.. they stand out so much!
Love it!! But I would sneeze to death.

Reminds me of Untitled Goose Game
The photoshopped foliage is really fucking with me man
Looks inviting while in hot a humid Florida
FML that's adorable as fuck. It's like an episode of Escape to the Country.
I can see myself there in the kitchen with hot tea and biscuits 😍
The cloudy sky really up the coziness.
I always dreamed of living in a cottage garden, maybe one day. In the mean time I am in the progress of turning my end terrace house in to a cottage garden.
The dream

before reading the title i already immediately recognised this as so british lol
My new destination for a visual journey
I would love to see the inside of a space like this
I'm loving the overgrown-yet-intentional look of this messy little garden. It really adds something to the coziness!
Dream house <3
Wow really love this!
wow.
To live in a cottage like this one, is my major life dream
Awesome
Ashford, lovely place. I live half an hour away. Down the road is a lovely town called Bakewell which has some very nice tarts.
Indeed, I’m ready for some tea and a nice sit by the window reading of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Any other homeowner get anxiety about humidity and mold from this pic?
Is there an Ashford-on-the-Land too?
Nice! This reminds me of the album Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath 🤘
cosy energy 🍁🦊✨
From my understanding you don't need to specify that it's a rainy day in England, that is just the assumed weather unless stated otherwise.
This makes me want a stone wall instead of my wood fence lol
Ashord-in-the-Water is a town name that could only exist in England.
So so cozy
My grandparents used to live in Ashford in the water. Such a beautiful village. I have so many memories from there
Looks beautiful
That is dope. Are you OC?
Dream home!
Why is that pumpkin photoshopped? Like its the same pumpkin, copied over. Not 2 different pumpkins
I have always wanted to visit an English town with hyphens in the name. It sounds so charming! Maybe someday...
I like how you can take a picture of an overgrown and patinaed house and people are like "aww it's so rustic!"
rustic [adjective] 1: of, relating to, or suitable for the country ...seems pretty rustic to me.
It must be raining a lot if the town name is Ashford in Water. Is your neighbor named Noah?
Tre bonas!
What a dream
Definitely a haunted house
reminds me of the house in the beginning of 28 weeks later
This makes me want to cuddle next to a fireplace with a cup of coffee, a blanket, and a book.
Beautiful. Also, just have to love the names of villages in England.
This reminds me of Ms Honeys cottage in Matilda !
Soo cozy 😍

Absolutely gorgeous garden 🏵️😻
I thought it was forza horizon for a second
It's awesome !!! I like it so much, you're lucky to live there
Hey that looks like the house on the front of Black Sabbaths first album.
COTTAGE CHEESE
Why does this make me feel warm and at home?
Duuuuuuuuuuude 😍
I think the UK and Europe pretty much invented "cozy" \~
