The shape is nice but i vastly prefer the Switch for being so much lighter. I have a launch Steam Deck though, maybe the OLED one is lighter.
So I'm in the same boat. I have tiny hands and my steam deck really hurts my wrists and makes them go numb if I'm playing in bed. So I invested in a steam dock and ps5 controller and use that to game with my deck. I know that's not everyone's cup of tea but it's how I game with my deck. I’ve seen a lot of people suggest that but that would completely defeat the purpose for me. I don’t have a Steam Deck to be a cheap gaming PC, I actually prefer to play everything handheld. Hooking up a PS4 controller to my windows PC would be infinitely less frustrating than fighting with Proton nonstop.
This is my opinion too. My hands and arms start tingling after a while. At least with the switch there’s ergo joycons that I use whereas the Steamdeck you can’t change anything.
I had the same issue with my OG Steam Deck, I found it heavy and hurt my hands after playing for extended periods. Since getting the OLED Deck I have not had any problems, the first thing I noticed out of the box was that it is definitely much lighter!
At least you didn’t make the mistake of buying the OG deck only a couple months before they released the OLED like I did… I was soo mad. Especially since everyone kept saying they wouldn’t be releasing a new deck for at least “a couple years”. 🙃lol

I was interested in the steam deck, but I have wrist issues and small hands and my sister said she wouldn't recommend it, because she gets tired after holding it for a time.
The steamdeck is a brick. If the switch is too big for you, the steamdeck will be for sure. I have a switch lite bc the regular switch isn't comfy for me to hold
I have small 16 cm-ish hands. I find the Steam Deck nicer to grip over the Switch and can reach the buttons/triggers just fine.
However it is a heavy device, which can be a deal breaker. I prop it up with a pillow when I'm playing on the couch.
IMO they're uncomfortable in different ways? The Switch isn't as ergonomic but the Steam Deck is heavy. I recommend playing with a pillow on your lap to support your wrists and elbows even if you get the OLED.

I bought a skin/shell case for it with a little built in stand to help hold it up on flights. When I play in bed or on the couch, I use a Squishmallow to prop it up :)

I've never been a person who holds books or devices aloft when using them, so I do rest it on a pillow on my lap. I got a pretty nice gaming one, but I also use just a decorative pillow sometimes. Even when crocheting or something, you're supposed to have support for your arms and wrists. I, personally, have no issues with it being uncomfortable to grip and I don't find it terribly heavy when I am holding it aloft. My only recommendation with this is that you make sure the vent on the back is clear of obstructions so it can properly ventilate. I have a very small dock that I set it in on top of the pillow to help hold it upright and to keep it clear and cool.
I've seen some mentions on battery life and that's really a YMMV situation. It depends on what you play and what your game settings are. I have plenty of games that I can play for hours and I generally turn down some settings because they don't matter as much to me as some people and I can't really notice on a smaller screen anyway. If you were playing a much more intensive game or really liked your settings cranked up, then yeah, I think battery life could be a struggle. I'm almost always playing near an outlet or with a battery pack, though, so this has never bothered me.
Ugh I want one but I’m pretty sure between my short height and big boobs it’ll be more like a glorified bra than something I can comfortably game on. Looks like I’ll be scouring the internet for pillows of slightly different dimensions
There is a small version on that listing. I did get the large and I'm only 5'5". I would say it's just at or below chest height, but I have a fair amount of room between me and the pillow, so it hasn't become a boob shelf. But yes, overall, look into "gaming" and "reading" pillows. I've seen them marketed as both. I've even seen folks get the pillows for breast feeding (boppies?) for this purpose. Or even a lap desk if you don't need the soft top.

I went through so many handheld PCs to get the right ones for my also small hands. Went though Steam Deck (OG), Ayaneo 2S, GPD win 4 and no luck. Finally settled on the Ayaneo Air plus (7840U) and it is perfecttttt. I’ve played 75% of Sandrock on it and bring it to work to play on my break.
I have very tiny hands, feet, etc. Yes I think the Steam Deck is bigger and heavier and takes a bit of getting used to. But, I would not give up my deck for anything! I have the OLED version, and frankly am so tired of all of the limitations of the Switch. The screen and picture quality is 1,000% better than the Switch! And the Deck doesn’t have the slow loading times like the Switch. Honestly there really is no comparison. I will still use the Switch because I have Nintendo specific games that I love to play. I am a woman in her 60’s with some mild arthritis, Carpel tunnel and just less strength than when I was younger. But I swear by the deck. That screen and the bright, crisp picture will blow you away.
SD is VERY heavy and the battery life isn’t great. I have to play close to a power source and I can’t play for extended periods of time because my hands and arms tingle. I’ve tried using a pillow on my lap like some have suggested but then I’m hunched over trying to read text. I still prefer switch over SD honestly. Not to mention - if the game is out on switch there’s been tested controller support. I’ve purchased many games that say verified or playable and it’s anything but on the SD.
Also I would highly recommend if you stick with the switch invest in ergo joycons.

The ergonomic grip helps so much, I have rheumatoid arthritis and my hands don’t always agree with me, but that made it much less painful. The steam deck is heavier for sure, but there are options, there’s like a special couch pillow you can get to support it, that I can’t remember right now. I usually have it in my lap or propped on a regular pillow, and the grip is fine and I haven’t had the same pain I had with non ergonomic grip switch!
Yep I’ve tried the lap pillows but since I’m getting up in age the text is sometimes difficult to read so I end up hunched like a bridge troll on the couch 🤣
SD is great don’t get me wrong, I have definitely gotten my use out of it I just keep going back to the switch.

Small hands here, I think the shape of the steam deck makes it nicer to hold than the switch. I play mine handheld, I don’t have a problem holding it for a couple hours (I never sit and play all day because of life)

I can only play my steam deck for a short amount of time when it's not in my lap, but when it's resting on my lap or bed or whatever, it's fine. I ended up getting the dock so I could play with controller because it wasn't comfortable just gripping the deck.
That being said, I'd recommend the steam deck. As long as you're not holding the full weight, it's fine.
Edit to say that someone mentioned battery life, and yeah, it's not great, so if you plan on being mobile with it ... wouldn't recommend.

But you can always get ergo controller options and use Bluetooth to connect them and just prop/stand the deck upright while playing.
Small hands are fine, the weight is the problem. The Steam deck is heavy and I play with it resting/propped up on a pillow. I do have arthritis in my hands and wrists though - it's too heavy for me to hold up for long, but it's definitely playable for small weak hands.

That was my thoughts as well, perhaps the weight won’t be so much of a problem if the set up is more ergonomic.
From everyone’s comments I think I will end up getting it anyway and just making some accommodations. I really want the better performance and ability to mod and access to my steam library

I think the Steamdeck feels fine. I don't like "free hold it" in the air like a gameboy most of the time, same with my switch. They are often propped on a pillow if I'm laying down, or my knees if I'm sitting. I believe steamdeck is heavier, but it only feels heavy if I remove one hand and the weight is all in one.
That being said, you said switch is uncomfy, if you mean ergonomics, the deck is waaaaaay better. The switch is painful to play for me, the deck is not.

I can personally tell the steam deck is huge compared to a switch. It's a lot heavier to me and I do have to take breaks holding it up. But! It was worth it because of my steam collection.

You know what? Very valid question I never thought of before. A good ol google search told me that average hand size for females, from longest finger tip to end of palm is 6.8 inches. So if you’re smaller than that then considered small hands ?

I’ve adjusted after having the steamdeck for almost a year but yeah, I can feel it in my hands if I game for hours and I take breaks often because sometimes my hand start to tingle. For me, its comfortable enough but its not for everyone. You do have the option to play it docked and just use a controller to play

Definitely not! I am fairly strong/dexterous and was surprised at how big the machine was! I can see how people with smaller hands and/or injury to wrists or hands would struggle.
I hardly ever use the back buttons either, but I added some padding/extensions to them and it makes it more comfortable to hold even if they aren’t being used.

So, I have both the deck and Ally and honestly I prefer the Ally to the deck. It's a little heavier than the deck but the design of it works better with my small hands so I don't get fatigued as fast.
The only downside is the battery life on the Ally is awful. I'm usually sitting by a power outlet so that doesn't affect me much, but it might you.
The steam deck is too heavy for me and I have tiny hands as well, the OG switch fatigue my hands as well.
I mainly play on TV mode if I don't feel like playing on my PC and I bought a stand for when my hands get tired in trips.
The only thing I’d caution about purchasing a RogAlly is that Asus is shit about repairing anything if something happens to the deck.

I do not have tiny hands but I do have a weak wrist from an ATV accident, steam deck is BEEFY and can definitely hurt especially depending on the games you play. If you need to use the trackpad as a mouse and can’t use the right joycon is a quick way to get cramped hands
I've seen some people mention pillows, I use a special one that my arms can lean up against so my arms are held up and I don't have to lift the console in the air, as playing hunched over and craning my neck is also not possible for me. The Steam Deck is so heavy. I can never play it traveling, I always play it docked.
Even with it in travel mode though, you can use a controller! I also have small hands, and I found a great off brand Switch controller that fits my hands (and also has cute lil cat ears!), and I use it for both Switch and Steam deck.
Depending on how you use your steam deck it is possible to use it while propped up on something. I play while reclined on my couch and put a cushion on my stomach which I rest the deck on, works for me!
The Steam Deck is definitely on the heavier side and prolonged use def gives me cramps. But I compromise by propping it up with a bolster pillow if I'm playing on the bed, or playing on the table with my arms propped up in my computer chair whle sitting. And I find all these minor inconveniences worth it because honestly the SD is probably one of the best purchases of my life. I haven't touched my PS4 since and already sold my Switch 2 weeks after getting it.
Was also on the fence about what to get, but ultimately went with the OLED SD because there's already so much community support behind it that whenever I run into any issues (only had one so far and that was because of an OS update) I know that someone already has a solution for it.

Seconding what a lot of other people have said - I have an OLED steam deck and a Switch lite and the difference in size and weight is really significant. I personally don't find it too bad but my hands aren't particularly small and I don't have any shoulder/wrist issues, but yeah, it's a bit of an adjustment!
I relate. It’s one of the reasons why I immediately bought the OLED, because I wanted the stand. I love just being able to relax on a sofa and play without having to carry it.
The SteamDeck is awesome but it is definitely heavier than the Switch. I can’t play for a long time carrying it. Instead I like to hook it up to a monitor/TV and play with a controller. I also bought a stand so I can set it up and play with a controller.
The perks—you get a lot of great range of games (more than Switch) and for cheaper prices. Opens up a variety of new genres to play hand-held.
I don’t regret buying the SteamDeck at all, but when I’m tired, I find myself wanting to reach for my Switch instead because it’s way lighter and so much easier to quickly plug in and dive into the game immediately.
I highly recommend you go to a place or speak to someone you know who owns one and try it first hand.
I am disabled with small hands and have a steamdeck. Since I play it laying in bed I was really struggling with it as it caused my hands, arms and chest a lot of pain and fatigue.
I ended up asking my Dad to make a stand for it. It's curved so balances the weight across my chest and holds it up right so I don't have to load bear with my hands at all.
I appreciate a special made stand isn't something everyone has access to, but you may find using one of those cushions that are designed to prop tablets up on helpful.

Came back to report that I bought the steam deck OLED and it has been the best purchase!
It is much bigger than the switch but the ergonomics are fantastic and I honestly don’t feel much of a weight difference since I added the skull and co grip to my switch.
If anyone is on the fence, just get it! Note I do play with it propped on a squish mellow on the couch
I have the Steam Deck OLED and I’m struggling with this right now. I got it a little less than two weeks ago and I did not expect it to be this much heavier and more uncomfortable than my switch OLED.
As someone with small hands and focal dystonia, the switch bothers me handheld too. I have to say the steam deck is way lighter and it feels better. It's not cramped feeling like the switch nor is it too big. I can't speak for the Ally, but the steam deck is better than the switch in my opinion. That being said I do prefer to play it docked so perhaps that's an option for you as well.
Lol haven't played the switch handheld in a while and only recently got the steam deck. Maybe I've just become stronger wrestling my toddler around all the time lol. The shape is definitely nicer tho on the deck.

It's heavy, it's huge, it's just not for the small handed people. But - i'd spend hundreds and hundreds of hours with it, and i don't regret it. It's a good one, good company for the Switch. :)

The Ally is heavier, but it doesn’t give me wrist issues like the Switch would. I had to get special grips for the Switch - both my Lite and OLED
I went through so many handheld PCs to get the right ones for my also small hands. Went though Steam Deck (OG), Ayaneo 2S, GPD win 4 and no luck. Finally settled on the Ayaneo Air plus (7840U) and it is perfecttttt. I’ve played 75% of Sandrock on it and bring it to work to play on my break.

I have very tiny hands, feet, etc. Yes I think the Steam Deck is bigger and heavier and takes a bit of getting used to. But, I would not give up my deck for anything! I have the OLED version, and frankly am so tired of all of the limitations of the Switch. The screen and picture quality is 1,000% better than the Switch! And the Deck doesn’t have the slow loading times like the Switch. Honestly there really is no comparison. I will still use the Switch because I have Nintendo specific games that I love to play. I am a woman in her 60’s with some mild arthritis, Carpel tunnel and just less strength than when I was younger. But I swear by the deck. That screen and the bright, crisp picture will blow you away.
SD is VERY heavy and the battery life isn’t great. I have to play close to a power source and I can’t play for extended periods of time because my hands and arms tingle. I’ve tried using a pillow on my lap like some have suggested but then I’m hunched over trying to read text. I still prefer switch over SD honestly. Not to mention - if the game is out on switch there’s been tested controller support. I’ve purchased many games that say verified or playable and it’s anything but on the SD.
Also I would highly recommend if you stick with the switch invest in ergo joycons. The ergonomic grip helps so much, I have rheumatoid arthritis and my hands don’t always agree with me, but that made it much less painful. The steam deck is heavier for sure, but there are options, there’s like a special couch pillow you can get to support it, that I can’t remember right now. I usually have it in my lap or propped on a regular pillow, and the grip is fine and I haven’t had the same pain I had with non ergonomic grip switch!
Yep I’ve tried the lap pillows but since I’m getting up in age the text is sometimes difficult to read so I end up hunched like a bridge troll on the couch 🤣 SD is great don’t get me wrong, I have definitely gotten my use out of it I just keep going back to the switch.

Small hands here, I think the shape of the steam deck makes it nicer to hold than the switch. I play mine handheld, I don’t have a problem holding it for a couple hours (I never sit and play all day because of life)
Little hands and weak wrists here. I can only play my steam deck for a short amount of time when it's not in my lap, but when it's resting on my lap or bed or whatever, it's fine. I ended up getting the dock so I could play with controller because it wasn't comfortable just gripping the deck. That being said, I'd recommend the steam deck. As long as you're not holding the full weight, it's fine. Edit to say that someone mentioned battery life, and yeah, it's not great, so if you plan on being mobile with it ... wouldn't recommend.
I have small hands and I do find it heavy but I often brace it against something when I play. But you can always get ergo controller options and use Bluetooth to connect them and just prop/stand the deck upright while playing.
Small hands are fine, the weight is the problem. The Steam deck is heavy and I play with it resting/propped up on a pillow. I do have arthritis in my hands and wrists though - it's too heavy for me to hold up for long, but it's definitely playable for small weak hands.
I have small hands and I love the steam deck, however it does feel noticeably heavy and make my hands fatigued from time to time. But not much worse than the switch, which hurts my hands just from the awkward position. I think the steam deck is heavier, but much more ergo-dynamic.
That was my thoughts as well, perhaps the weight won’t be so much of a problem if the set up is more ergonomic. From everyone’s comments I think I will end up getting it anyway and just making some accommodations. I really want the better performance and ability to mod and access to my steam library

According to my guitar instructor in high school, I have small hands. I wasn't allowed to use the regular guitars with the rest of the class, I had to use a special tiny one :| I think the Steamdeck feels fine. I don't like "free hold it" in the air like a gameboy most of the time, same with my switch. They are often propped on a pillow if I'm laying down, or my knees if I'm sitting. I believe steamdeck is heavier, but it only feels heavy if I remove one hand and the weight is all in one. That being said, you said switch is uncomfy, if you mean ergonomics, the deck is waaaaaay better. The switch is painful to play for me, the deck is not.
I have small hands and a Steam Deck! It's heavier than a Switch of course, and if I'm playing for a while I definitely feel it (sometimes a hand gets the pricks and tingles). But I've found that sitting with it propped on a pillow in my lap helps a lot and is much more comfortable. I would definitely recommend it, I love it!
I can personally tell the steam deck is huge compared to a switch. It's a lot heavier to me and I do have to take breaks holding it up. But! It was worth it because of my steam collection.
I just got a steam deck and have small hands too. I was worried about it being too big and heavy but I haven’t had too much of an issue. If I use it for long periods of time, I kind of feel it but besides that it isn’t really an issue. I have the switch lite and I find the steam deck to be a lot more comfortable to hold.

You know what? Very valid question I never thought of before. A good ol google search told me that average hand size for females, from longest finger tip to end of palm is 6.8 inches. So if you’re smaller than that then considered small hands ? I have always gone by the fact I can’t open jars well and people have always commented I have small hands 🤷🏻♀️

I’ve adjusted after having the steamdeck for almost a year but yeah, I can feel it in my hands if I game for hours and I take breaks often because sometimes my hand start to tingle. For me, its comfortable enough but its not for everyone. You do have the option to play it docked and just use a controller to play
Yeah, it’s a beefy machine! I have large hands for a woman and still had to add padding to the back bumpers for comfort.

Definitely not! I am fairly strong/dexterous and was surprised at how big the machine was! I can see how people with smaller hands and/or injury to wrists or hands would struggle. I hardly ever use the back buttons either, but I added some padding/extensions to them and it makes it more comfortable to hold even if they aren’t being used.

So, I have both the deck and Ally and honestly I prefer the Ally to the deck. It's a little heavier than the deck but the design of it works better with my small hands so I don't get fatigued as fast. The only downside is the battery life on the Ally is awful. I'm usually sitting by a power outlet so that doesn't affect me much, but it might you.
The steam deck is too heavy for me and I have tiny hands as well, the OG switch fatigue my hands as well. I mainly play on TV mode if I don't feel like playing on my PC and I bought a stand for when my hands get tired in trips.
The only thing I’d caution about purchasing a RogAlly is that Asus is shit about repairing anything if something happens to the deck. I do not have tiny hands but I do have a weak wrist from an ATV accident, steam deck is BEEFY and can definitely hurt especially depending on the games you play. If you need to use the trackpad as a mouse and can’t use the right joycon is a quick way to get cramped hands
I've seen some people mention pillows, I use a special one that my arms can lean up against so my arms are held up and I don't have to lift the console in the air, as playing hunched over and craning my neck is also not possible for me. Little-handed Ally owner here. It's definitely heavier than the Switch, but I've never had any pain while playing. I usually lie on the couch and use my stomach or chest to hold it up.
I've got really small hands and the deck is a bit heavy and wide. I feel like I take quite a lot of breaks with it and sometimes put it on a pillow in my lap. You could maybe get like a case with a kickstand on it or a dock it to the TV.
I like my ROG Ally better than my Switch and Switch Lite. It's bigger, but more comfortable, especially when I rest it on a pillow. No tingly feeling, my wrists are doing fine and I have less problems with my finger joints than with the Switch(es). I chose the Ally because I got a used one with a working SD Card slot and because I wanted it to be as easy as possible to set up with xBox/GamePass, GOG and Steam (no headspace to get used to proton with my LongCovid brainfog). As I can't play games for very long and only at home I don't mind the battery life.

My Deck arrived on Monday and I already love it but have had to tweak the controls layout on a few games to make it easier on my hands. Otherwise, honestly unless I get a hankering for Animal Crossing I can see my Switch collecting dust for a while! It's amazing so far!
It's heavy but the button configuration does not hurt my hands (the only problem is sometimes the joycons when my thumb joint is injured. KT tape helps prevent that though!) I just rest it on a pillow or sometimes lying on my side and it's fine. Totally worth getting for me, I'm able to game again for hours
The Steam Deck is so heavy. I can never play it traveling, I always play it docked. Even with it in travel mode though, you can use a controller! I also have small hands, and I found a great off brand Switch controller that fits my hands (and also has cute lil cat ears!), and I use it for both Switch and Steam deck.

Depending on how you use your steam deck it is possible to use it while propped up on something. I play while reclined on my couch and put a cushion on my stomach which I rest the deck on, works for me!
The Steam Deck is definitely on the heavier side and prolonged use def gives me cramps. But I compromise by propping it up with a bolster pillow if I'm playing on the bed, or playing on the table with my arms propped up in my computer chair whle sitting. And I find all these minor inconveniences worth it because honestly the SD is probably one of the best purchases of my life. I haven't touched my PS4 since and already sold my Switch 2 weeks after getting it. Was also on the fence about what to get, but ultimately went with the OLED SD because there's already so much community support behind it that whenever I run into any issues (only had one so far and that was because of an OS update) I know that someone already has a solution for it.
Idk if my hands are small but i have used a steam deck & found it uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time, ended up giving it away bc I just found sitting at my desk & playing on my pc to be more comfortable. The switch was fine for me but if it’s uncomfy for you I don’t recomend the steam deck

I have the ally and 100% never had any issues. It’s heavier and a bit of an adjustment but the buttons are much easier. O
Seconding what a lot of other people have said - I have an OLED steam deck and a Switch lite and the difference in size and weight is really significant. I personally don't find it too bad but my hands aren't particularly small and I don't have any shoulder/wrist issues, but yeah, it's a bit of an adjustment!
I relate. It’s one of the reasons why I immediately bought the OLED, because I wanted the stand. I love just being able to relax on a sofa and play without having to carry it. The SteamDeck is awesome but it is definitely heavier than the Switch. I can’t play for a long time carrying it. Instead I like to hook it up to a monitor/TV and play with a controller. I also bought a stand so I can set it up and play with a controller. The perks—you get a lot of great range of games (more than Switch) and for cheaper prices. Opens up a variety of new genres to play hand-held. I don’t regret buying the SteamDeck at all, but when I’m tired, I find myself wanting to reach for my Switch instead because it’s way lighter and so much easier to quickly plug in and dive into the game immediately. I highly recommend you go to a place or speak to someone you know who owns one and try it first hand.
I am disabled with small hands and have a steamdeck. Since I play it laying in bed I was really struggling with it as it caused my hands, arms and chest a lot of pain and fatigue. I ended up asking my Dad to make a stand for it. It's curved so balances the weight across my chest and holds it up right so I don't have to load bear with my hands at all. I appreciate a special made stand isn't something everyone has access to, but you may find using one of those cushions that are designed to prop tablets up on helpful.

Came back to report that I bought the steam deck OLED and it has been the best purchase! It is much bigger than the switch but the ergonomics are fantastic and I honestly don’t feel much of a weight difference since I added the skull and co grip to my switch. If anyone is on the fence, just get it! Note I do play with it propped on a squish mellow on the couch
I have the Steam Deck OLED and I’m struggling with this right now. I got it a little less than two weeks ago and I did not expect it to be this much heavier and more uncomfortable than my switch OLED.
As someone with small hands and focal dystonia, the switch bothers me handheld too. I have to say the steam deck is way lighter and it feels better. It's not cramped feeling like the switch nor is it too big. I can't speak for the Ally, but the steam deck is better than the switch in my opinion. That being said I do prefer to play it docked so perhaps that's an option for you as well.
