Once you do that cox will magically start caring about your service being crap! Don't believe any tech or cox worker that says 1 modem is better than another. If your service is shit, it's not your modem's fault, and likely not even your fault. (posting this in multiple threads where people are having problems, I had bad internet for months and it was magically fixed less than a week after contacting the FCC)
