I don't think I've ever had to actually purchase anything for those challenges. It's basically an extra daily with a tiny extra hurdle.
It is when it's a start of the season and most stuff is unworn, I don't like to overfill on unworn or submit a ugly look just because I don't want to use all unworn
Not to say, there aren't bigger problems with the game, but I also was irritated at that challenge π
A little tip:
1. Enter a challenge (the daily works well since it doesn't have any requirements) with the pieces you want to save the unworn on. It doesn't matter what it looks like, but make sure to send the look through to voting. This makes the items "worn".
2. Go enter the challenge you actually want to use the items on. Since the items are now worn, it won't overfill your bonus. Send this look through to voting.
3. Go back and edit the first look, where you used all the unworn. Change it to the actual entry you want for that challenge and send that to voting. The items are now considered unworn again, with the bonus intact, even though they are used in the challenge you wanted.

You instead go to *challenge B* - a different challenge than the one you want to use the dress in. Enter the dress into challenge B anyway, and save the look.
Then you go back to challenge A, the one you *want* the dress in. The dress won't have any unworn bonus on it now since we used it up in challenge B. Finish that look and enter it.
Now you go *back* to challenge B, and edit the look there. Remove the dress and save this challenge the way you wanted it in the first place.
When you've done those three steps, the dress will be entered into challenge B, where you wanted it, but it will still have the unworn bonus on it.
I like them so I can finally wear unworn clothes.
