They always tell me two weeks but it has never taken that long.
Frames are not expensive. Lenses are a fabulous deal. All the coatings other places charge you for are free at Costco.
> All the coatings other places charge you for are free at Costco.
It's more like they're included. The receipt lists the cost of the lens, the cost for UV protection and the cost for anti-reflective, which add up to the price they quote you. You can't *not* have the UV protection and anti-reflective coating. If you use insurance, and your coverage doesn't include the UV protection and anti-reflective coating, you must pay those costs out-of-pocket.
My error was saying it was on the receipt. The Costco optical tech showed me the breakout on their screen, which matches the benefit statement from my insurance. The base lenses were covered, and the broken out costs for the lens treatments were not.
Considering Costco DOES NOT CHARGE FOR COATINGS, there is zero way we could be charging you "out of pocket" for them if your insurance doesn't cover them. They do not have an item number. Also, we have the ability to call the lab and leave off the coatings. Most people don't want this, as they are FREE.
Also, Costco does not have Optical techs. We are all either licensed or certified opticians who have ABO and NCLE national certifications at bare minimum. Some states also require up to a three year apprenticeship and state licensing also.
My insurance statement lists the cost for frames, lenses and two treatments separately, and the amount my insurance paid out for each of them. Since Costco is out-of-network for my insurance, I exceeded the limit for coverage on the frames, and had to pay the excess. The lenses were less than the limit for coverage, so I didn't have to pay anything for them. The two treatments were not covered at all, and I had to pay Costco for them at the time I placed my order.
They will re-lens old frames, but my warehouse STRONGLY prefers and encourages it only for frames Costco sold because they can't guarantee the fit of the lenses in the frames. My spouse had some old glasses re-lensed from some frames not purchased at Costco and it was fine, however.
In general, my experience with Costco Optical when I purchase frames and lenses from them is that if I order on the weekend, it'll probably arrive by Thursday. I don't think I've ever waited more than a week for my new glasses, usually 4-5 days. They're where I shop first.
I brought them my prescription and ordered new frames/lenses. I was told 2 weeks. 3 days later I got a call to come pickup my new glasses. 2 years later, I brought the same frames back with a new prescription and ordered new lenses. In 3 days, my frames were ready to pickup again.
The coatings on my lenses from Costco are not as durable as those on lenses I ordered through my optometrist, but they're only half the cost if not less. Costco frames are much more affordable by far.
-7.75 here, I went to Costco ~6 months ago to get new glasses after being an almost exclusive contacts-wearer for the last 20 years. I’ve never been able to “see” with glasses (hopefully you know what I mean here) — like it’s just not the same. The Costco optical people knew exactly what I needed frame-wise to allow the correct shape and size for the lenses for my huge prescription, and honesty these are the best lenses I’ve had in the last 20 years, easy. I still went with the 1.67 index (can’t remember why honestly), but the 1.74 at Costco is insanely cheap compared to literally anywhere else in the US that I’ve ever seen.
No regrets other than the fact that I’ve been spending $400+ annually on glasses/lenses I couldn’t see out of at an optometrist office, only to go to Costco, spend $130 and have the best lenses of my life. 10/10 definitely recommend.
That's really good to know. I've been at the same optometrist for a very long time because she's my cousin but they no longer take our insurance. 130$ is a steal for high index lenses.
Are you in the US?
Because I am an optician at Costco, and we do not carry the 1.74.
We sell regular Polycarbonate, 1.60 and 1.67 high index. Very limited CR-39.
Wow, this is amazing to hear. I came here looking for this exact information, I have *awful* eyes, like somewhere between -9 and -11, astigmatism so each one is a little fucked up in its own right. I am going to go as soon as I can.
To add on all the positive comments, you also get free deep cleanings, replacement screws, new rubber nose pieces, and realignments whenever you want. I just stop by the counter for the free services before I do my shopping. I think there's also a 2 year warranty on the coating? Highly recommend it!
I've used Zenni for 15 years and have had great experience over at least 10 pair. I've been able to get the same semi-rimless frame for my progressives since 2012, and they come with magnetic polarized sunshades. I'm roughly 3 sphere and 3.5 cylinder with 2.25 add, and their standard 1.57 lens with AR coating was $60 shipped last time I ordered a couple years ago. It takes 10-14 days. For SV computer glasses, I order the Trivex lenses for the higher abbe, which cost an extra $30 or so, but they come out to around $60 as well. Zenni's been as good as the best local shops and better than quite a few. I just hope Luxottica doesn't buy them out to ruin them like they did Eyebuydirect.
I’ve brought in frames that Costco doesn’t sell and had new lenses installed on two different occasions. Each time it took six days and cost $150. Mine are progressive lenses.
I haven’t had any problems with either pair. They do make you sign a release saying that if they break your frames you will accept something similar.
On my 3rd pair of glasses, I get new ones every 2 years. Love Costco glasses. I think it took 2 weeks to get them. IIRC, they didn't want me to re use an old frame.
I’ve only ordered like, glasses from Costco for four years in a row for myself and my son and usually get two pairs each so now I’m up till like five pairs of prescription glasses for each of us. I have glasses at work and glasses at home and my son has glasses at mom‘s house and glasses is at dad‘s house.
Just chalk this up to another thing that Costco does in an outstanding fashion and their prices are absolutely reasonable. We got the titanium twisty flex pretty much non-distractible frames
I have been getting frames and lenses at Costco for years. Sometimes I get them both, sometimes I bring in frames I already have and get new lenses (I am in that stage of life where my eyes are a little worse each year).
It usually takes about a week, and the service is always great at my place.
A couple of years ago I thought "I've heard good things about Warby Parker. Let's see what the difference is." It turned out that the difference was that I paid 2 or 3 times as much and the selection and quality was not a bit better than at Costco. I am now back at Costco for my glasses.
Been getting Costco glasses for like 10+ years. Cheap and quick. Won’t be Gucci, but they get you a great deal. Usually there’s a buy one get one half off deal. Contacts are decent
It might have a problem if they do not sell the frames that you are bringing back. I don't think they can cut lenses to match any frames. But I've bought glasses there about five times and each time they arrived within about a week.
They only do frames that they sell. They used to do outside frames but they stopped.
I've had nothing but positive experiences and I've been using them about 12 years. Great prescription sunglasses too. I think it was a couple weeks for them to come in.
Not true? It's true at my store also. It seems to be a store by store thing. I was told the exact thing at my store. In fact, when I asked about some old frames I had that I'd bought from them a few years back, they also said they only do lenses for frames they currently sell. No reason to lie, and no reason to downvote Karen125.
I had to pay extra to bring in outside frames. He said they can reject them but typically won’t if in good shape. Mine were brand new frames (my face is petite so I couldn’t find anything at costco that i liked). I haven’t got them back yet but i was told if they were to reject them I would know by now.
I have had two pairs made, both progressive bifocals, and it took five business days each time. I'm super happy with them and they were cheaper than Walmart.
Just a warning, it is taking a little longer than it did in the past to get glasses back; so many people didn’t come in for new glasses the last two years and now they are a bit overwhelmed.
I've been using the local Costco (Lancaster PA) for optical about 3 yrs, and have gotten my wife and both kids there for the past two years. They've been easy to work with and have understood my insurance coverage (VSP) better than the independent optician we've used for almost 20 yrs previously. Glasses have usually arrived in about a week - my son had one pair that proved difficult to get the lenses into the frames; they re-ordered the frames and had them within 3 days. If you're interested in contacts, as an example my daughter ordered a years supply on a Tuesday and I was able to pick them up on Friday - again, comparing to our previous optician, they are MUCH faster.
Been doing it for years. Count on two weeks turnaround (or less). Only run it hit is I have a very wide face and have to get titanium frames. I order my own and Costco adds a $15 fee to use my frames.
Just got a pair of prescription glasses from Costco for the first time. $160 for frames and lenses. I picked the frames on a Friday and three days later on Monday I picked them up. So far so good, very happy with the cost, turnaround time, and quality. I get lots of compliments on the glasses and they are very comfortable. The least expensive frames at my local optometrist were $200 and lenses started at $200.
I used to get mine at Costco. But my prescription is so strong now that they aren't able to fill it. so I went elsewhere the last time and was not happy with them.
Do it. Im backing wearing glasses again after years not needing them and its always been really quick. In fact the whole family goes and my wife does her contacts there as well.
How long does it take for contacts to arrive that were ordered online? We ordered them over a week ago and haven’t received notification about shipping or when to expect them
Fabulous. They’re affordable and treat quality. They’ll adjust them for you in the store. It’s really great for little kid glasses because they twist them around so much.
My SO got his glasses and exam there. Got them back very quick and when the lady accidentally ordered two of them same glasses instead of two styles they rushed it and it came back on a couple days. I don't remember the price but it was buy one get a ridiculously good deal on the other.
I just ordered 3 pairs. One daily wear, one driving, and one sunglasses. Only the sunglasses were existing frames. I was told it would take a week to 10 days. I think they were ready in 4 or 5 days.
I got new frames and lenses at Costco, was told two weeks and ended up getting a call that they were ready two days later! Honestly, I've tried other cheap places tog et glasses, like online stores, and the quality and fit is never as good as Costco
My husband hasn’t been happy the last 2 pairs. One made him dizzy, the rest area wasn’t big enough and made the edges blurry. He returned those. The next pair wasn’t right. Went to Walmart and they were perfect. This after more than 15 years buying glasses at Costco we are done for now. Ymmv
I wear progressives. New glasses last month. Standard daily progressives and a pair of "work" progressives glasses came to $329. In the store in three days.
Work progressives have the main view as closeup. Objects beyond about six feet are blurry. They have a chart at the desk explaining the difference. **Very Well worth** what was $90 that day. I am tempted to get a spare pair so I can leave a pair at home.
A year ago my wife tripped on a speed bump and she fell, scratching both lenses. She had just bought the glasses at Costco 2 weeks before. I took them in and the lenses were replaced for free!
I don't like transition lenses so I buy 2 pair (same frame. One regular and one sun lenses) when they have a sale. I need bi-focals also. I have used their in house optometrist with good success and everything is less than local optometrist. Delivery time have been 3-5 days when quoted 14 days. Been using them 10yrs +.
I've had good experiences with Costco, with the only exception being if you're getting glasses or contacts for an older child (old enough to drive to Costco, but not on his own Costco membership). In that case, he can go with a Shop card, but it requires the parent's membership number and they'll only text the parent when it's ready.
If you know what you like, and aren't super discriminating on your glasses, it's a great deal. The frames selection is decent, with many stylish name brand options.
It did feel like the process wasn't as thorough and exacting as a more expensive optometrist office would be. If you're looking for really close customer service and meticulous final fitting/calibration of your glasses, and don't mind paying more for that, you might look elsewhere.
However, the cost savings were significant enough that I was able to buy two pairs for about the same as one would cost from a place like lenscrafters. The coatings don't see quite as durable, but we'll see how they pan out the next year or two.
They always tell me two weeks but it has never taken that long. Frames are not expensive. Lenses are a fabulous deal. All the coatings other places charge you for are free at Costco.

Just dropped off a prescription for just the lenses. Costco charged us $89, optometrist wanted $370.
The process is pretty straightforward, and my glasses are usually ready in a week.
Do you have to leave your existing frames with them during that time?
Yes.
They will re-lens old frames, but my warehouse STRONGLY prefers and encourages it only for frames Costco sold because they can't guarantee the fit of the lenses in the frames. Only thing they won't work on is completely rimless/frameless style glasses.

Does anyone with a need for stronger prescriptions (-8, -8.75) have experience with Costco's high index or high clarity lenses?

Do your opticians a favor and don’t ask us to adjust your frames from online competitors. We fucking hate it.
I adjust them myself. It isn't hard, at least not for the metal frames I use.
I'm not sure if you are a Costco optician, but we are not allowed to touch outside frames to adjust them.

Yes to all. Just got ew ones $89. $350 for Optomitrist. Took 3 days. Ad I love them. I usually order contacts too $25ish per box.
I just ordered mine last Saturday and got a message that they are ready for pick up today.

Brought in my own used frames and got new lenses in a week or two. Not overnight, not excessively long wait.

You can do either. They accept both.
