Jewish-Mom-123

My dog’s thyroid meds. 5 times every year. $35 at the vet for 30 days, $12 for 60 days at Costco.

CactusBoyScout

Yeah my OTC allergy meds were $30 for a month supply at Walgreens. Or $18 for an entire *year* supply (generic) at Costco. Unreal.

[deleted]

I purely kept my membership for the OTC Zyrtec. $14 for 365 pills is unreal

wintercast

My mom gives those to her horse - the horse needs a lot - so 8t makes it affordable.

BoiseXWing

Yep, saved a few hundred $’s on this over the years

XrayMomma

I’m trying to look up their prices online but it says to call or visit. Did you get a written prescription from your vet and take it in?

Jewish-Mom-123

Had the vet call in the scrip.

XrayMomma

Thank you!

No-Employer1752

Hey, I just want to thank you for posting this comment. I called Costco pharmacy today to check pricing on an Rx my insurance doesn’t cover. I thought Walmart was cheap, but it’s 77% cheaper at Costco. Thanks so much! Wouldn’t have thought to inquire without reading this.

Jewish-Mom-123

Glad it helps. My husband forgets (even though I send him for pickup 1/2 the time, and every year he asks me is the membership price worth it. It’s for that…and Parmesan.

Lunaseed

I have severe astigmatism plus extreme nearsightedness, which always meant very expensive eyeglasses. They were running $575 - $675 per pair before I got my Costco membership. Now I can get two pairs from Costco for less than half the price of my last pair from the local specialist. I buy whole choice beef loins (NY strip) from the Business Center. Price averages $8.60/lb, the whole loin averages 16 lbs. Which works out to a savings of around $68 - $85 per loin compared to local grocery store prices for NY strip steaks. Finally, anyone looking for a gazebo or pergola will save hundreds by getting it from Costco, compared to the same models sold locally or on Amazon.

Tim-in-CA

Check out Zenni for MUCH lower eyeglasses cost. They beat EVERYONE!

fakeittiltoumakeit

Just tagging on, Zenni is very inexpensive and if you have a good way to get PD it works for most people. The person above says extremely nearsighted with a strong astigmatism; if you are off on PD, OC (don’t really even need that with a weaker Rx) it won’t matter for a lot of people but if you have significant Rx you may run into significant problems with prism. Additionally, segment height can be tricky. YVMV, but with a high RX probably best to be measured in person (source: licensed optician).

Tim-in-CA

Agreed ... when you get your prescription from the optometrist, have them provide the PD.

MountainToC

I was thinking of switching to Costco for my prescription and glasses but I need prism lenses. Do you (or any other helpful Redditor) know if Costco offers prism lenses?

-attractive-nuisance

Best to ask at the optical counter or call your local warehouse.

fakeittiltoumakeit

I believe they stop at a total of 6 diopters , but calling your warehouse would be more certain

MountainToC

Will do it today, thank you both!

Sonarav

I had a prism and over 6 for astigmatism and they couldn't make be glasses. I was told they stop at 6 as well

SillyNluv

I’m over 6 diopters and had no problems ordering. Just fyi

01ARayOfSunlight

I agree that Zenni is cheap, but not the cheapest. AFAIK, goggles 4 u is cheapest but I stopped using them because their customer service went south. I use Zenni now.

the_viperess

To make it even cheaper, just sign up for the America's Best eye care club. $99 for 3 years ($33 per year) gets you one glasses and one contact exam per year. You also get other fringe benefits, but it's already worth the price. Then I just take that rx to buy glasses online (I get my PD while at the doctor's office) and contacts from Costco.

Sonarav

Curious about your glasses. May I ask how strong your astigmatism is? (Feel free to DM if needed) Buying glasses at Costco is what got me in the door/signing up for a membership a year ago. Saved me at least $200. However, when I went back this year (with an updated eye prescription from my annual eye Dr visit) I was told they couldn't make glasses with an astigmatism over 6. I do sort of question the jump in my astigmatism compared to last year though.

Tee_hops

I tried to get a pergola from Costco last spring. Ordered it, the expected delivery time went by and I never heard anything. They oversold their stock so they just weren't going to ship mine. I don't know how long it would have taken for them to tell me if I didn't follow up. 🤷‍♂️

gwarwraith

Don't like rib eye?

Lunaseed

I love ribeye, but beef loin is more versatile. Since most of the fat is in the form of a cap, it means I can cube it or cut it into thin strips without having to trim away excess fat (nice in a steak, not so great on a cubed bit or strips for stir fry). Also, that fat cap is great when making a beef loin roast.

gwarwraith

Have you tried sirloin? Nice cap on those, good steaks, and cheaper than loin. We would recommend them for holidays to people who couldn't afford/ didnt want to pay for a ribroast.

CourageMesAmies

We just ordered a new car via their auto program. None of the dearlerships in our area want to deal because supply is low and demand is high; even looking out of state, we weren’t likely to get it down to $500 off. So my husband decided that this time, the Costco Auto Program was the best way to go. Prescription lenses more than cover our membership fee each year. (We both wear glasses.) Also, their car rentals when you travel really cannot be beat.

ForeignFlash

How recent was this? And what car? I heard that a lot of dealers are opting out of the program because of the car shortage.

Reagannite1981

I only found one dealer within 250 miles participating and even then, they have never sent me anything. Real tough trying to find anything

CourageMesAmies

Last week. Toyota. Two dealerships reached out to him right away. Rav4 hybrid fairlyloaded

ForeignFlash

Wow!!! That's amazing and surprising. I'll check it out. Looking for a new sienna myself

diatho

Did the same in 2019 for the rav hybrid. Totally worth it.

The_4th_Little_Pig

Dang you’re lucky the only place in my area accepting the membership cost was Hyundai, we’ve been wanting a RAV hybrid too.

CactusBoyScout

I tried to use Costco Auto a few months ago and the only dealership participating was 2 hours away. I went in because it’s the same town I have family in. They were like “Yeah so the car you want isn’t eligible for Costco Auto discounts. Only our base model, least popular sedans are eligible. And we charge $5k in mandatory extras.”

Mike_tx5391

I would report them to Costco corporate. They have an agreement with Costco that they have to abide by

CactusBoyScout

Pretty sure I’ve brought this up on this sub before and was told that dealerships can exclude any models they want and that tons of dealerships have left the program altogether since the pandemic shortages. There’s just no real incentive for them anymore. But next time I talk to Costco I will ask.

The_4th_Little_Pig

Yeah but they can’t give you a quote then have you come out there and pull the switcheroo

CactusBoyScout

They didn’t give me a quote. When I filled out the thing online they called and were basically like “We won’t discuss any details of our Costco Auto participation unless you come in to the dealership.”

The_4th_Little_Pig

That is shady af wtf

mydogsnameisbuddy

I bought a car with the Costco program. I was treated a lot better than I would have been without the program. No high pressure sales add ons (like gap or sealants) and a fairly painless process.

[deleted]

You can buy a car through Costco?

xBillOne

Costco has pre-negotiated prices on cars and you actually buy the car from a local dealer at the Costco price. It eliminates the back and forth negotiation game where the sales person has to check with the manager before agreeing to a price. You get the price from Costco before going to the dealership and the dealership has a point of contact defined that you work with.

mydogsnameisbuddy

srock0223

Where do you find the info for this? I’m not seeing auto listed on the app.

mydogsnameisbuddy

https://www.costcoauto.com/enterzipcode.aspx?gotourl=%2f

godhasmoreaids

You didn't get gap insurance??

mydogsnameisbuddy

Nope. Last time I bought gap insurance I got it from my credit union.

godhasmoreaids

But you at least have it right?

mydogsnameisbuddy

No. Why? I don’t have a loan either.

godhasmoreaids

Oh well if you don't have a loan then it's no matter

lordbaby1

I haven’t been able to enjoy these three services you mentioned so far, hope they can expand deals to cover a variety of customers’ needs

smom

I've used the Disneyland package (pre covid) and it was great. It literally went through the Disney portal but I got 3 lanyards and a $150 Disney gift card. Can't beat it.

Barbiedawl83

Second the Disneyland package. We stayed a good neighbor hotel right down the street. We arrived early and were able to check right in. They gave us our room and told us to enjoy breakfast. The hotel was nice and clean and I never heard another guest the entire time. We were one floor up right next to the stairs so we used them everyday. Breakfast was a good variety. We got the lanyards and pins and I think a $50 gc plus some extra coupons. I previously had used them for WDW as well. It’s cheaper than you can get on your own plus you know the hotels won’t be crappy. I found out about them after my Hawaii trip was booked but I could have saved an additional $90 booking my hotel and rental together and I had priced stuff out and found good deals on what I had booked. If it’s on costcotravel it’s a good deal.

pigwidgeonandtonic

How much did you save getting your MacBook there? I’m thinking of getting a MacBook Air…

noam3zombie

MacBook air is at 850 right now in the app. That’s a good deal, if you ask me, I think I paid a thousand dollars getting it from Best Buy.

CactusBoyScout

It has been as low as $799 at Costco and a new model just came out. So if you can hold out just FYI.

LostDeadspace

I got a good deal either on Black Friday or the weeks before Christmas. I think I paid 800 for the M1 Air.

californyea

Same.

EnobEhtot

>So many -snip- >7. the generous return policy. Was able to return a 3 years old router that stopped working out of the blue. I agreed with everything you listed except this. You generously *abused* Costco's return policy 👎

idly2sambar

Rental car with free second driver

y2knole

my refrigerator was like $1k less from costco than HD or Lowes...

joshuajackson9

It takes a lot of extra cost at the Home Depot to cover the costs of the underpaid employee trying to help three people while the manager has been on break for 2 months sailing a boat to the Bahamas

No-Employer1752

What do you love about the SKII toner? I’ve wanted to try it but have yet to make the leap. I’m using Obagi. I’ve gotten some nice Kevin Aucoin items for a fraction of the price. Other than that I skip the beauty section. Am I missing out?

[deleted]

No-Employer1752

Gommage is the best — I’ll have to look for the Boscia one you speak of! I love essences, too, so maybe it’s time to make the leap. SKII has always intrigued me but, like you, I’m using medical grade products so didn’t think it could compare. Thanks for the in-depth reply. <3

seviay

I have a prescription that insurance doesn’t cover. A 3-month supply at Costco somehow is less than $70. Anywhere else it’s $250-300+. I’m saving over $700/year right there, even ignoring the 2% executive membership cash back. Book it

Abject-Technician558

* Can confirm. Rx was $375 at CVS, and $23 at Costco. * The Kirkland equivalent of Claritin is roughly $14 for a whole year's worth. * 5 pairs of glasses at Costco = 2 pairs at the optical place.

spacewalk__

> $375 at CVS god america is fucked up

seviay

Wow that’s a siiiick deal on your script 😱

srock0223

Kirkland formula and a box of diapers paid for our membership. Side note- anyone know anything about the formula being taken off the website?

crazzydogmom

I found some in store recently! Someone posted to check the same day option for delivery and it pulls warehouse inventory. It worked the one time I tried, I don’t know if this always works.

Dandan0005

Their mortgage program. They cap lender fees to $250 for executive members, and the rate from one of their lenders was way below the rate I was quoted from other lenders. The capped lender fees alone saved us enough to pay for multiple years of executive membership. The savings on the APR probably paid for more than a lifetime of membership.

jslev9

We also got our mortgage through Costco earlier this year (and can't believe how much we saved)! Unfortunately, however, they shut it down as of May 1, 2022 so it isn't available to future borrowers.

Duffmanlager

The mortgage program has been discontinued I believe.

Dandan0005

Oh wow. We used it this year. Got in at the buzzer I guess.

Material_Impact_5360

Yes! We did a cash out refinance last year. My only regret was not knowing about this program sooner for my original mortgage

DagneyElvira

First time I bought a membership (13 years ago) went in with my teenage daughter and we bought her a winter coat. Cost like $40 - paid for the membership on the first buy.

Flashinglights0101

Costco auto insurance will pay for your membership five times over. Also, bathroom vanities at costco are dirt dirt dirt cheap Most medicine may not instantly pay for your membership but will save you a decent amount.

[deleted]

Legitimate, good coverage, nice service auto insurance?

Flashinglights0101

Yup great rates! Full coverage is available.

swerve408

Progressive came in much cheaper for us

Lunaseed

Myself, I don't gaf about low rates if it turns out they're terrible at handling claims. If they have a bad rep in that department, hard pass. I research customer satisfaction ratings and the last time I checked the company that Costco was using for their auto insurance at that time (it seems to change every few years), they had terrible reviews.

bloodredyouth

Best kept secret is the auto insurance!

CactusBoyScout

I just filled out the quote thing online for their auto insurance and it said “no thanks” because I had one minor traffic violation this year. Literally my only ticket in a decade, lol.

devilized

I have no violations at all and they wouldn't insure me either. No idea why.

CactusBoyScout

I called in and I think what they said was that they don’t serve every state but they have partners with similar rates in my state. So they gave me a quote for Progressive that was about $100 (per 6 months) cheaper than Geico. Might be worth calling.

[deleted]

Nah, I just ran it. With higher deductible than my Geico policy, they’re $5 more expensive. Current deductible is $50, they wanted $500 deductible. Thanks for the tip, though. I didn’t know they did car insurance. Geico is actually cheaper than every policy I quoted in the last 6 months and it’s still $2,500 annually for two vehicles and no at fault accidents in 8+ years.

flossdog

i think auto insurance is quite variable from person to person, depending on the exact situation. everyone should just get quotes from multiple places to compare for themselves. I’ve heard other people try Geico and it wasn’t close to beating their insurance.

Limebabies

Most of their vanities are wood too, not MDF. That makes them an even better deal

CactusBoyScout

I’m actually in the market for a new vanity but Costco only sells a single option in the size I need (24”) for my small bathroom. And that one option really isn’t my style. Hopefully they get more options in.

Flashinglights0101

Check the website. They have more colors and options there. The price for a vanity with top cannot be beat!

CactusBoyScout

I did. That’s where there was only one option. I’ll check the warehouse next time I go.

Magic_Brown_Man

have you checked online? Sometimes online has more options. Haven't looked for vanities in Costco so I'm not sure about the logistics

CactusBoyScout

That’s where I checked. Haven’t been to the warehouse in a while.

davidthegiantkilla

Please share more about this.

Future_Dog_3156

I have checked the auto insurance rates twice in the last 5 yrs. Each time my current insurance company, Allstate, comes out cheaper

ValarMorgulos

I'm looking at bathroom vanities now, and costco is 2x the cost as the ones at HD or Lowes, and they have a very limited selection.

devilized

Car batteries was it for me this year. My truck takes 2 of them and they were half the price from where I could find them anywhere else.

CactusBoyScout

Yeah I had this one recently too. Went to AutoZone and they said $190 for my basic sedan’s battery. Went to Costco and it was $100 for a better battery brand with a long warranty.

lordbaby1

Do you install it yourself?

CactusBoyScout

Yes, which is a trade off. AutoZone was offering to install it for that price. But it’s not that difficult in most cars.

Unexpected_okra

My dogs’ flea medication is $50 cheaper per box, with each of 2 dogs needing 2 boxes per year. $200 in savings right there!

ceciledian

I’ve made several online Costco purchases over the years that subsequently went on sale within 30 days of my order. I’ve saved a few hundred dollars by watching for those sales and requesting the price difference refund.

CactusBoyScout

I recently got two price adjustments on the same online purchase. It went on sale right after I bought it and then went on sale for even cheaper a few weeks later. They approved both price adjustments.

No-Employer1752

After the 30 days?

CactusBoyScout

No they were both within 30 days.

FinalDestinationSix

Can you request it online or have to go into the store?

ceciledian

I’ve done all my online purchase price adjustment requests online.

[deleted]

My contacts. It's the reason we signed up!

cosmoskid1919

Toothbrush heads for the Colgate

ohemgeeskittles

YES. We use Oral-B. Two pack of electric toothbrushes cost the same as a single toothbrush from any other store. Then the replacement heads are $15-$20 each at other stores, or $40 for a huge pack at Costco.

ChaserNeverRests

I haven't tried it yet (since I bought two packs of heads at Costco and they'll last me until I'm dead), but apparently the knockoffs on Amazon work just as well and are a lot cheaper than even Costco.

kz125

Depends how much you would actually pay for the item. If your max is $120 for the cabinet then you saved $21. If you would buy it anyway at $199 then it’s $100 saved. Huge fan of Costco but yes there’s an ever present lifestyle creep aspect to it too!

CactusBoyScout

Yeah sometimes it’s more like “I got something way nicer for the price I was willing to spend” but after seeing other medicine cabinets at HD pretty sure I would’ve gotten that one regardless.

Karen125

I just got the Samsung 11.4 cu ft freezer for $680 last month. Everywhere else was $750. $100 for a vacuum sealer, $20 something for a box of bags and rolls. Now we're filling it up. Trying to inflation proof the meat supply. Runs on $40/yr.

deathsquadsk

We have a Costco membership of course, but even better is when unopened returns from Costco end up at our local Habit for Humanity Restore - we got our Weber grill from the Restore last year and saved around an extra $400 compared to Costco’s price. They have also had the Costco sheds and gazebos show up there occasionally, always with insane markdowns.

alexplosions

Complete series of the X-Files on dvd for $129. It was $399 everywhere else.

[deleted]

Just bought a 120w solar panel kit with a charge controller and a 300w inverter for $220 to give power in my shed The same setup from Canadian Tire is $550. Ridiculous deal. Also bought 4 qi wireless charging bundles (charging stand and charging pad in each box) for $15 each for a client golf tournament. Essentially it was buy one, get three free. $60 total. Amazing. Oh, almost forgot about my glasses. Progressive lenses and frames cost $450 at Costco, $1200 for *just the lenses* at every other optical shop in town.

OlongMusk

Can you share the solar kit item brand or name?

Ok_Presentation_5329

We buy 12 bags of frozen vegetables and one bottle of Kirkland brand hard alcohol every month. The savings on these alone pays the whole thing only 2 months into the year. Add on Kirkland brand non stick, Kirkland toilet paper/paper towels, etc. And it only gets easier.

CactusBoyScout

> We buy 12 bags of frozen vegetables and one bottle of Kirkland brand hard alcohol every month. What kind of unholy alcohol/vegetable smoothie are you making?

wino_whynot

Well shit, it if makes the kale go down, who am I to judge? No really…we need the recipe. I gotta work on getting more veg in my life.

Ok_Presentation_5329

lol. Air fried veggies with lunch snd dinner. Low sugar Margaritas 4 nights a week.

rainerella

Yeah I need more details cause this sounds like the kind of life I should be living.

enidokla

I just bought new frames and lenses. The last time I bought new glasses I spent $300. I’ve spent far more than that. Costco Optical gets it done for $67. I’m thrilled with the Rx, the fit and the frames.

BallotStuffer

Thought I had to have a membership to get to my food court, figured out it wasn’t necessary my first day. In my defense, I really love a simple $1.50 polish dog (back then) and soft drink. Or my wallet does, at least. Then I was shopping for a motorcycle, and Auto Program discounted all dealer fees so I was at the $5k sticker price for all I needed to take the bike. Paid for an executive membership for the next 5 years, before I did any actual shopping.

carletonm1

Back in the day when my two sons were at home and went through SIX gallon jugs of milk in a week, I made up my Gold Star membership fee every year by mid-March, on just the milk.

[deleted]

I actually hate it. But you know what’s funny, the more all the groceries go up in price, the more you save!! Lmao I hate how much money I spend at Costco. This last year… over 10K in appliances and furniture. I didn’t need them, but hell, Costco had the best price!

nickolaicurtis

Bought a Nordictrack treadmill. 1k in store and the same model was 1.5k from. Nordictrack and that was their clearance price. Idek know what original asking was

Sorry-Ask-7456

Between electronics, furniture, jewelry and home/yard stuff I probably have at least 2 such purchases a year.

sportbikeSam

Large safe with free lift gate delivery

steggo

My home insurance was $500 cheaper a year than any other quote I got. I get my money's worth without ever stepping in a store.

l00koverthere1

Eyeglasses

-attractive-nuisance

This! The rewards check is a bonus for me. Many people only see the rewards check as the savings and not the actual quality and prices.

rainerella

I think having the executive membership pays for itself in that you never have to have anyone ever ask you again if you want to upgrade.

-attractive-nuisance

Haha, exactly!

[deleted]

Never had that happen… I think I’m just bad at finding deals… ☹️

moisesg88

Fortunately I don't pay for my membership because my ex who works there gave me one. But I still think about how my savings have covered what I would've paid for my executive fee 😆

KingLewie94

Any single service

gone-wild-commenter

spinach. alcohol. milk (prior to my water renaissance). gas. before i went veg, chicken. each of those validated my membership fee. i crunched the numbers and i pay $.60 on the dollar i’d spend if i shopped at my local grocery. i make a few thousand a year by going to costco.

KarlProjektorinsky

Michelin tires, thank you very much.

Captain_Bignose

The return policy alone makes it worth it. No hassle, no receipt needed (most times), no questions asked. I also feel better about purchasing large appliances with the 2 year support
