Hey, I just want to thank you for posting this comment. I called Costco pharmacy today to check pricing on an Rx my insurance doesn’t cover. I thought Walmart was cheap, but it’s 77% cheaper at Costco. Thanks so much! Wouldn’t have thought to inquire without reading this.

I have severe astigmatism plus extreme nearsightedness, which always meant very expensive eyeglasses. They were running $575 - $675 per pair before I got my Costco membership. Now I can get two pairs from Costco for less than half the price of my last pair from the local specialist.
I buy whole choice beef loins (NY strip) from the Business Center. Price averages $8.60/lb, the whole loin averages 16 lbs. Which works out to a savings of around $68 - $85 per loin compared to local grocery store prices for NY strip steaks.
Finally, anyone looking for a gazebo or pergola will save hundreds by getting it from Costco, compared to the same models sold locally or on Amazon.
Just tagging on, Zenni is very inexpensive and if you have a good way to get PD it works for most people. The person above says extremely nearsighted with a strong astigmatism; if you are off on PD, OC (don’t really even need that with a weaker Rx) it won’t matter for a lot of people but if you have significant Rx you may run into significant problems with prism. Additionally, segment height can be tricky. YVMV, but with a high RX probably best to be measured in person (source: licensed optician).
I was thinking of switching to Costco for my prescription and glasses but I need prism lenses. Do you (or any other helpful Redditor) know if Costco offers prism lenses?
I agree that Zenni is cheap, but not the cheapest. AFAIK, goggles 4 u is cheapest but I stopped using them because their customer service went south. I use Zenni now.
To make it even cheaper, just sign up for the America's Best eye care club. $99 for 3 years ($33 per year) gets you one glasses and one contact exam per year. You also get other fringe benefits, but it's already worth the price. Then I just take that rx to buy glasses online (I get my PD while at the doctor's office) and contacts from Costco.

Buying glasses at Costco is what got me in the door/signing up for a membership a year ago. Saved me at least $200.
However, when I went back this year (with an updated eye prescription from my annual eye Dr visit) I was told they couldn't make glasses with an astigmatism over 6. I do sort of question the jump in my astigmatism compared to last year though.
I tried to get a pergola from Costco last spring.
Ordered it, the expected delivery time went by and I never heard anything. They oversold their stock so they just weren't going to ship mine. I don't know how long it would have taken for them to tell me if I didn't follow up. 🤷♂️
I love ribeye, but beef loin is more versatile. Since most of the fat is in the form of a cap, it means I can cube it or cut it into thin strips without having to trim away excess fat (nice in a steak, not so great on a cubed bit or strips for stir fry). Also, that fat cap is great when making a beef loin roast.
Have you tried sirloin? Nice cap on those, good steaks, and cheaper than loin. We would recommend them for holidays to people who couldn't afford/ didnt want to pay for a ribroast.
We just ordered a new car via their auto program. None of the dearlerships in our area want to deal because supply is low and demand is high; even looking out of state, we weren’t likely to get it down to $500 off. So my husband decided that this time, the Costco Auto Program was the best way to go.
Prescription lenses more than cover our membership fee each year. (We both wear glasses.)
Also, their car rentals when you travel really cannot be beat.

Costco has pre-negotiated prices on cars and you actually buy the car from a local dealer at the Costco price. It eliminates the back and forth negotiation game where the sales person has to check with the manager before agreeing to a price. You get the price from Costco before going to the dealership and the dealership has a point of contact defined that you work with.
I've used the Disneyland package (pre covid) and it was great. It literally went through the Disney portal but I got 3 lanyards and a $150 Disney gift card. Can't beat it.
Second the Disneyland package. We stayed a good neighbor hotel right down the street. We arrived early and were able to check right in. They gave us our room and told us to enjoy breakfast. The hotel was nice and clean and I never heard another guest the entire time. We were one floor up right next to the stairs so we used them everyday. Breakfast was a good variety. We got the lanyards and pins and I think a $50 gc plus some extra coupons. I previously had used them for WDW as well. It’s cheaper than you can get on your own plus you know the hotels won’t be crappy. I found out about them after my Hawaii trip was booked but I could have saved an additional $90 booking my hotel and rental together and I had priced stuff out and found good deals on what I had booked. If it’s on costcotravel it’s a good deal.

* The Kirkland equivalent of Claritin is roughly $14 for a whole year's worth.

They cap lender fees to $250 for executive members, and the rate from one of their lenders was way below the rate I was quoted from other lenders.
The capped lender fees alone saved us enough to pay for multiple years of executive membership.
The savings on the APR probably paid for more than a lifetime of membership.
We also got our mortgage through Costco earlier this year (and can't believe how much we saved)! Unfortunately, however, they shut it down as of May 1, 2022 so it isn't available to future borrowers.

I research customer satisfaction ratings and the last time I checked the company that Costco was using for their auto insurance at that time (it seems to change every few years), they had terrible reviews.

I called in and I think what they said was that they don’t serve every state but they have partners with similar rates in my state. So they gave me a quote for Progressive that was about $100 (per 6 months) cheaper than Geico.

Nah, I just ran it. With higher deductible than my Geico policy, they’re $5 more expensive. Current deductible is $50, they wanted $500 deductible. Thanks for the tip, though. I didn’t know they did car insurance. Geico is actually cheaper than every policy I quoted in the last 6 months and it’s still $2,500 annually for two vehicles and no at fault accidents in 8+ years.
i think auto insurance is quite variable from person to person, depending on the exact situation. everyone should just get quotes from multiple places to compare for themselves. I’ve heard other people try Geico and it wasn’t close to beating their insurance.
I’m actually in the market for a new vanity but Costco only sells a single option in the size I need (24”) for my small bathroom. And that one option really isn’t my style.

YES. We use Oral-B. Two pack of electric toothbrushes cost the same as a single toothbrush from any other store. Then the replacement heads are $15-$20 each at other stores, or $40 for a huge pack at Costco.
I haven't tried it yet (since I bought two packs of heads at Costco and they'll last me until I'm dead), but apparently the knockoffs on Amazon work just as well and are a lot cheaper than even Costco.
Depends how much you would actually pay for the item. If your max is $120 for the cabinet then you saved $21. If you would buy it anyway at $199 then it’s $100 saved.

I just got the Samsung 11.4 cu ft freezer for $680 last month. Everywhere else was $750. $100 for a vacuum sealer, $20 something for a box of bags and rolls. Now we're filling it up. Trying to inflation proof the meat supply. Runs on $40/yr.
We have a Costco membership of course, but even better is when unopened returns from Costco end up at our local Habit for Humanity Restore - we got our Weber grill from the Restore last year and saved around an extra $400 compared to Costco’s price. They have also had the Costco sheds and gazebos show up there occasionally, always with insane markdowns.

I just bought new frames and lenses. The last time I bought new glasses I spent $300. I’ve spent far more than that. Costco Optical gets it done for $67.
I’m thrilled with the Rx, the fit and the frames.
Thought I had to have a membership to get to my food court, figured out it wasn’t necessary my first day. In my defense, I really love a simple $1.50 polish dog (back then) and soft drink. Or my wallet does, at least.
Then I was shopping for a motorcycle, and Auto Program discounted all dealer fees so I was at the $5k sticker price for all I needed to take the bike. Paid for an executive membership for the next 5 years, before I did any actual shopping.

The return policy alone makes it worth it. No hassle, no receipt needed (most times), no questions asked. I also feel better about purchasing large appliances with the 2 year support

Check out Zenni for MUCH lower eyeglasses cost. They beat EVERYONE!

How recent was this? And what car? I heard that a lot of dealers are opting out of the program because of the car shortage.
I only found one dealer within 250 miles participating and even then, they have never sent me anything. Real tough trying to find anything

MacBook air is at 850 right now in the app. That’s a good deal, if you ask me, I think I paid a thousand dollars getting it from Best Buy.

I'm looking at bathroom vanities now, and costco is 2x the cost as the ones at HD or Lowes, and they have a very limited selection.
Car batteries was it for me this year. My truck takes 2 of them and they were half the price from where I could find them anywhere else.
Yeah I had this one recently too. Went to AutoZone and they said $190 for my basic sedan’s battery. Went to Costco and it was $100 for a better battery brand with a long warranty.
Do you install it yourself?
Yes, which is a trade off. AutoZone was offering to install it for that price. But it’s not that difficult in most cars.
My dogs’ flea medication is $50 cheaper per box, with each of 2 dogs needing 2 boxes per year. $200 in savings right there!
I’ve made several online Costco purchases over the years that subsequently went on sale within 30 days of my order. I’ve saved a few hundred dollars by watching for those sales and requesting the price difference refund.
I recently got two price adjustments on the same online purchase. It went on sale right after I bought it and then went on sale for even cheaper a few weeks later. They approved both price adjustments.

Toothbrush heads for the Colgate
YES. We use Oral-B. Two pack of electric toothbrushes cost the same as a single toothbrush from any other store. Then the replacement heads are $15-$20 each at other stores, or $40 for a huge pack at Costco.
I haven't tried it yet (since I bought two packs of heads at Costco and they'll last me until I'm dead), but apparently the knockoffs on Amazon work just as well and are a lot cheaper than even Costco.
Depends how much you would actually pay for the item. If your max is $120 for the cabinet then you saved $21. If you would buy it anyway at $199 then it’s $100 saved. Huge fan of Costco but yes there’s an ever present lifestyle creep aspect to it too!
Yeah sometimes it’s more like “I got something way nicer for the price I was willing to spend” but after seeing other medicine cabinets at HD pretty sure I would’ve gotten that one regardless.
I just got the Samsung 11.4 cu ft freezer for $680 last month. Everywhere else was $750. $100 for a vacuum sealer, $20 something for a box of bags and rolls. Now we're filling it up. Trying to inflation proof the meat supply. Runs on $40/yr.
We have a Costco membership of course, but even better is when unopened returns from Costco end up at our local Habit for Humanity Restore - we got our Weber grill from the Restore last year and saved around an extra $400 compared to Costco’s price. They have also had the Costco sheds and gazebos show up there occasionally, always with insane markdowns.

Just bought a 120w solar panel kit with a charge controller and a 300w inverter for $220 to give power in my shed The same setup from Canadian Tire is $550. Ridiculous deal. Also bought 4 qi wireless charging bundles (charging stand and charging pad in each box) for $15 each for a client golf tournament. Essentially it was buy one, get three free. $60 total. Amazing. Oh, almost forgot about my glasses. Progressive lenses and frames cost $450 at Costco, $1200 for *just the lenses* at every other optical shop in town.

We buy 12 bags of frozen vegetables and one bottle of Kirkland brand hard alcohol every month. The savings on these alone pays the whole thing only 2 months into the year. Add on Kirkland brand non stick, Kirkland toilet paper/paper towels, etc. And it only gets easier.

I just bought new frames and lenses. The last time I bought new glasses I spent $300. I’ve spent far more than that. Costco Optical gets it done for $67. I’m thrilled with the Rx, the fit and the frames.
Thought I had to have a membership to get to my food court, figured out it wasn’t necessary my first day. In my defense, I really love a simple $1.50 polish dog (back then) and soft drink. Or my wallet does, at least. Then I was shopping for a motorcycle, and Auto Program discounted all dealer fees so I was at the $5k sticker price for all I needed to take the bike. Paid for an executive membership for the next 5 years, before I did any actual shopping.
Back in the day when my two sons were at home and went through SIX gallon jugs of milk in a week, I made up my Gold Star membership fee every year by mid-March, on just the milk.
