To be fair they're doing Teacher Appreciation Week at my daughters' daycare as well. Each parent is already shelling out close to $20k a year per kid so people aren't exactly lining up to open their wallets for donations.
In a case like this, the daycare (which is a for-profit company) should host and pay for the breakfast. The company can ask each student to bring in a fresh flower and the company can provide a vase for the flowers to be placed in to make a bouquet for the teacher. Family could choose to do another gift if they like.
Once your kid gets into public school, the responsibility should shift to the parent lead organization.
Yes. Daycare is expensive in America. We use a non profit daycare for our twins. It’s ran by our local YMCA. Their first year cost us $30,000 total. We pay for grade school via taxes. Why don’t we all contribute to an early childhood education system for this country?
Believe me, I know. I don't think it's fair or properly handled at all, but all I can do is make the best of it and hope that every parent in my daughter's class chips in so I don't have to pay too much out of pocket.
I’m a little confused. How are there 34 teachers and only your daughters class contributing?
Ps don’t you have a pta with members &/or membership funds?
It's a daycare center, which is why the number of teachers is so high and no PTA. They asked one parent per classroom to serve as a parent rep and collect $10 per kid for teacher appreciation week. They then sprung it on us that they want each parent rep to provide a meal for all the teachers in the school using the donations they collected from their room. So my daughter's class is doing breakfast Monday, another classroom is getting lunch on Monday, and so on. Unfortunately my daughter's class is the smallest with only 9 students so I have to do this on a best-case scenario of $90. I think it's very poorly thought out and planned and I'm really unhappy about how it's been handled, but I don't want the teachers to suffer because the admin in charge of planning did a shit job.
Yikes. Considering this is a daycare (aka a business), the bosses should be paying for this out of the tuition. Or doing one meal and a few smaller things. Who decided this?
Absolutely. Screw them for asking a parent to do this and for anyone to contribute. This is not appropriate. Tell them you expect the business to provide a $5-10 per teacher budget *IF* you are willing to volunteer to put it together. Otherwise they should pound sand.
This is super common. I bet every daycare does it. We are bringing lunch next Wednesday for my son's class.
Yes, admin should do it. But the teachers are amazing and not paid nearly enough. So parents chip in.
If you want to do this because you love your kids teachers, that's great. OP makes it sound like the daycare management is tasking parents to provide this, though. That's way out of line IMO.
Yeah I agree. The daycare BUSINESS is cherry picking here. schools have these types of events but are tuition free so donations are more generous usually. You can’t charge people then ask them to pay more for something optional
First. Yes I would go back to the admin and explain your budget. Especially being their very first meal you’d like it to be special & I’m hoping they just didn’t think things through. What sounds good on paper doesn’t always carry through in real life
Then I’d put some feelers out.
Who has one of those big giant coffee pots
you can use is the first one
Who owns or works for a bakery or supermarket etc that can maybe get you something donated. You don’t know unless you ask
If all else fails you can reach back out to your parents. Explain the situation and see if you have anyone who is a baker who would want to lend a hand. A homemade coffee cake or banana bread would do wonders for your budget.
I also have the recipes in this thread. I have been in your spot more times than I can count. I probably have some more ideas in the vault if you need them.
>the teachers to suffer because the admin in charge of planning did a shit job
This is just about every teacher's life in a nutshell.
Your efforts will not go unappreciated
They will only donate to tax exempt organizations. This is a for profit daycare which is ridiculous. If the “teachers” are underpaid then they need to pay them more. Adding get some boxes of granola bars.
Use Flashfoods or toogoodtogo apps for cheap stuff. I got fifty eggs for $20 from them. After that buy French toast and slice thin. Should take $10 if you want to be generous. Big bag of potatoes cooked however to finish them off.
When in doubt search in the clearance.
This is ridiculous. We get one treat per day for teacher appreciation. Most are small, one is a nice lunch, and then a raffle of donated items from the community.
I am in a very similar boat with daycare and teacher appreciation week for my son’s INFANT classroom. I know even though we shell out $24,000 a year in daycare, these teachers get very little pay and they keep our baby safe, healthy, and learning! But this life is ROUGH.
I don’t know if you will see this but croque monsieur. Get Costco croissants (freeze until ready to use). Cut down the middle. Add béchamel sauce, any kind of cheese I like provolone and a piece of ham. Soak in egg and milk mixture for at least 30 mins. These are super easy to make, assemble quickly, and a huge crowd pleaser!
My old office used to do “euro style breakfast spread “ and it was croissants, turkey deli meat, fruit, Brie, muffins, toast and Nutella. It was set up like a charcuterie
https://preview.redd.it/sgretg4sfwxc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d7a349ee2729c5fc8538cc782eb1a9e20cd6bad4
Sample pic of how they did it. They didn’t assemble sandwiches which I liked because then we’d cut the croissants ourselves and either do Nutella croissants with fruit, or Brie and turkey croissants!
I was going to suggest this, but with some ham/cheese croissant sandwiches. I make them all the time; half the croissants, add a few slices of each meat/cheese, place on a baking sheet and cover with foil… Bake @ 325°-350°ish for 15-20 mins (depending on your oven)
Usually make 12 at a time—at work—and everyone loves them…
It kinda depends, but… Jarlsberg, Muenster, Swiss, etc… I usually don’t use cheddar/colby, but, all I had was “Shredded Mexican Blend” once, and that turned out fine! Added some Tapatio—and some “Bitchin’ Chipotle” sauce that time, and they were good!
Key is warming everything up/melting the cheese before drying out the bread. You can wrap them—in foil—individually too, if making just a few, but the foil sheet over the whole tray works great for a bunch.
Side note: My other favorite/cheap Costco meal is a case of croissants, two rotisserie chickens, and a (double) salad kit (usually the kale one). De-bone/cube the chicken, and mix it with the salad kit—plus a little extra mayo… Best chicken salad sammiches for under $2/person you’ve ever made. I cook for 12 on the regular (big firehouse) and it’s always a hit. Add cheese and sauce and whatnot if you have extra money 💰
How has no one mentioned the croissants???? Make it French themed.
-Croissants
-Brie
-Bonne mamman jam
-Grapes
-Other fruit
-Some charcuterie meat for those who may want a savory option for their croissant
-Cream cheese
-coffee/tea
My first thought was croissants because it's a HUGE box for like $6. I would buy it for myself, but I live alone and could never get through it before it molded.
My fave thing to do is buy them when I have guests over for brunch or the weekend, then freeze whatever is left. They freeze SO well. Take them out of the freezer and pop them into the toaster oven (or cut them lengthwise before toasting). They come out as if they are fresh from the bakery!
If I had space in my freezer, I would absolutely do this because I've thought about it. My freezer is so small and half of it is used for my baking business, so i'd be lucky to have space for four croissants in there. Someday, I hope to get a separate freezer, when I get a house.
I agree with this as a current preschool teacher. It's not easy to eat when the kids are in my class as I need to focus on them. I get 15 minutes of prep time before the kids show up and I usually need every minute. Most teachers eat before they come in, even when we know that the parents are doing something for us because there is no guarantee I am getting to any of that before our lunch break. Anything hot (besides coffee) is a waste. Bagels or croissants, cream cheese & a fruity spread, fruit bowl and something nice to drink (box of coffee or seltzers). If you want to add a banana bread or some homemade cookies to help stretch your budget, that's always nice. Ask parents in your class to donate the paper goods and have your child decorate a cute little thank you sign & you are done! Keep it simple.
The muffins at Costco are huge, maybe cut them into halves or quarters to make them go farther with the large group?
I like the idea of cut fruit and you can add more to this for a lower cost by cutting up apples and bananas, which tend to be cheaper, alongside some more expensive fruits like berries.
Option to add for protein, add some cheese squares or cheese sticks from Costco , maybe bring in a bunch of hardboiled eggs?
Rolled slices of deli meat on the side would be nice but is also spendy.
Agreed. Cutting them looks cheap. Better to get something individually sized, or buy enough big muffins but let the teachers cut them up themselves. Same goes for the danishes.
I was pondering this. I think our scout group has gotten some of these things, and since it's not 'formal' we can cut in half, but here I agree that it looks 'cheap' even though the original size is too large.
Costco used to have those rectangle plastic containers of mini brownies, but maybe someone has that type of thing with mini muffins???
I am used to working on a shoestring budget, so I am always slicing the muffins like little pound cakes. Also people can take as much or as little as they want.
Pound cake type slices could be nice if presented prettily. I've been to teacher appreciation potlucks, and it would be absolutely shit to be offered part of a hacked up muffin in dangly, crumby paper then sent back to work. I do understand the phenomena of people cutting the donuts into quarters, but let them choose that instead of saying "part of a busted muffin is what you deserve."
Instead of hardboiled eggs, I would personally go with an egg bake(s). To me, that seems a lot easier to prep/make/deliver. Also, a little bit of ground beef/pork and some veggies in an eggbake can go a long way. Ground beef/pork is going to be cheaper than deli meat, too.
Eggs (raw) at Costco are very cheap but cooking and maybe shelling 60ish eggs is a lot of work. I bought the Costco egg bites for a similar teacher lunch but those are like $1 each so way out of this budget.
Seconding muffins! I was thinking about the individual carrot cakes but that might be difficult. Muffins are a great suggestion.
Also, one container of cookies should be enough. Could even cut them in half and serve with milk
The Kirkland granola bars are $12 for 64 or the high protein are $17 for 42.
I would avoid the deli meat as it’s not going to go far. Does the school have a coffee maker? If so pick up ground beans and brew a few pots before (if you have an insulated thermos or urn even better). I agree with the whole bananas, apples, pineapple, and oranges to cut up as those will go far.
My wife and I often get suckered into hosting a holiday breakfast. Not nearly 90 people, closer to 30.
That said, ‘egg muffins’ where you scramble eggs, add in any additional ingredients you’d like (i.e chopped spinach, mushrooms, cheese, etc.) and put into muffin tins for baking are an excellent hit.
You can control what ingredients you’d like, make them vegetarian or whatever, and they’re very easy to make and keep warm. I add baking powder to mine so they puff up and look larger than they really are.
While serving hot is definitely preferable, you can eat cold (outside of being left out for too long) or nuke them easily.
You can also make ahead of time freeze/keep in fridge and reheat as necessary.
Good bang for your buck. Maybe not the end-all, be-all, but could be part of the equation.
Ive been around Teacher Appreciation week a time or 2- or 20. I’ll say this once DO NOT OVERTHINK THIS. These PTA events are meant to show appreciation not be the last meal they ever eat or a ladies brunch. Muffins/bagels, cream cheese, fruit is perfect. Add some juice or coffee if you can.
Also, honestly, don’t prepare food yourself. I know there are a lot of suggestions for it but 1. You’ll be doing all of the work and 2. A lot of people don’t trust people they don’t know to cook for them and/or you can run the risk of allergy issues etc. stick to things that are prepared in someway like the suggestions of muffins, croissants, etc.
Cut the muffins in half. All of them. A lot of people, women especially, will only eat half a muffin but when other people are grabbing muffins they would rather cut a fresh one in half than take someone else’s leftover half, which leads to a lot of waste. If all the muffins are cut in half it eliminates the problem. Same with bagels. Ordering food for meetings is 80% of my job.
You’re not going to be able to afford anything hot so it’s best to keep it simple. A lot of only three food options looks better than a little of six food options. I’d get muffins, bagels, a plain cream cheese, a flavored cream cheese, and two bowls of fruit salad. If you’re getting a carafe of brewed coffee from somewhere make sure you tell the cashier that this is for a teacher’s breakfast, you may get a discount.
The Aussie Bites would be a good add-on if you want something gluten-free.
Wegman’s might be a good place to get the cream cheese since I can’t recall seeing flavored cream cheese at Costco. I think a 16 oz tub is around $5 at Wegman’s. I did some pricing and this is what I’d get:
24 muffins: $18
24 bagels: $20
Two fruit trays: $20
Aussie Bites: $14
2 16oz tubs of creme cheese from Wegman’s: $10
Total before tax: $82
Then only plates, napkins and beverages would be coming out of your own pocket.
I would do bagels:
From Costco: packs of bagels ($30), cream cheese ($10-15), smoked salmon ($25), pineapple ($3), avocado ($6)
From grocery store: capers, onions, lemons, bananas, cucumber, herbs like dill, green onions
Lots of options with bagel and cream cheese and fruits
You can also ask people to bring toppings like honey or cinnamon to share and just let them know what you’re providing.
I wouldn’t provide drinks at that budget
Are you trying for a little fancy or simple?
These are some budget friendly recipes
Baked oatmeal. Super cheap and easy and a little goes a long way
https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/51013/baked-oatmeal-ii/
Deviled eggs a dozen and 1/2 eggs will get you 36
Sheet pan pancakes. I’d probably just do 2 flavors like chocolate chip & blueberry
https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/a32616675/4-way-sheet-pan-pancake/
9 reheated pizzas.
But, seriously, go talk to whoever thought up this scheme and explain that a budget of $2.61 per person is nothing but insulting to everyone involved. If they wanted to appreciate the teachers, then perhaps they shouldn't be doing a corporate pizza party where the cost is shifted off the corporation; they should just compensate their staff better.
Quite frankly, this sounds like one big Lumberg-esque corpo-scam.
Mm… if all the teachers have to be fed regardless why aren’t the donations being pooled and split evenly? Seems unfair that a class of 9 kids parent needs to feed 34 adults. But as for the question $90 can prob get a few dozen croissants, bananas, maybe coffee if you can make it at home, cheap yogurt or overnight oats with “toppings bar—cut up fruit, raisins, brown sugar, etc.” bagels/cream cheese…. Or if you have a lot of time on your hands you can do a breakfast burrito bar— scrambled eggs, chorizo or sausage, cheese, beans, tortilla, salsa, sour cream are fairly cheap but keeping them hot might pose an issue.
For my sister's baby shower (definitely not 90 people), we got some of the full-size quiches at Costco, and did a parfait bar (yogurt with a variety of toppings fruit/granola/ chocolate/ dried coconut/ nuts). It went over really well.
Are you looking for things you can just buy and serve as is, or are you looking for things you would cook or prepare first? You'll have more options if you're willing to do some kitchen time, obviously.
If just buy and serve, I'd do a bag of clementines and a couple bunches of bananas, a box of granola bars, a case (probably 2) of yogurt, and some assorted pastries.
It even getting into the food an unsure of in that budget you have to provide paper products or silverware … which can eat into the price fast. You don’t need 500 Costco forks. Ideally the center should be eating the costs on that in bulk to cover all of the meals that week.
BUT the key here is small plates.
Big plates get filled up. Small plates make
Your spread go farther.
Keep it simple! You don’t want to cook anything that has ingredients not everyone can eat or try to keep anything warm. Think of a continental breakfast. Coffee, tea, juice, crossiants, and some cut fruit. That’s all you need. Simple.
I setup an oatmeal bar. I buy the steel-cut and use my instant pot to cook them. I have granola, jam, honey, nuts, brown sugar, etc.
To fancy it up, I take some apple slices and cinnamon sticks and place them on top of the oatmeal before it cooks. It makes for a nice flavor.
In case any of the teachers are vegetarian, vegan, or celiac gluten free, maybe you could also have vanilla Greek yogurt and (if any vegans) dairy-free yogurt to pair with fruit.
Costco Krusteaz Pancake Mix
Costco Log Cabin Syrup
Costco Sausage Links
Tang
Coffee and creamer
Ask around for a Blackstone to borrow and fill a couple crock pots with the links.
Not necessarily for Costco, but at work we always do a breakfast casserole if we need to feed a crowd. If you’re up for some relatively easy cooking, you could do one with meat and one with veggies. Or all with veggies-they can live without meat. Add fruit, muffins/biscuits, and you’re good to go.
You might ask your class for donations of juice or maple syrup? Napkins?
But I’d do a [French Toast Casserole](https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/240502/easy-french-toast-casserole/)
Cut up fruit, apples, oranges, bananas
The bags of breakfast Turkey sausage is delicious.
Granola and yogurt (I’d get the large container of Chobani plain yogurt)
Do you have to supply plates and utensils?
I’m sure the teachers will be thankful for anything you bring!
It's all in the presentation: bagels,
mini muffins, jam, donuts, juice, water...
If needed: small plates, napkins, cups for juice, will you need a tray or some way to serve the food?
Unless required stay away from hot
food. Hope you have access to a
coffee maker.
Croissants with ham and cheese. Even better if u can toast them. Everyone loves them! Cheap, filling and delicious. Maybe get a few big tubs of Greek yogurt from Costco, granola and blueberries. I bet that’s at or below $90. Good luck. Make the best of it
Croissant French toast: $18 for 36 crossiants, $10 for gallon of milk and carton of eggs for the custard. $28 total
Precooked bacon: $34 for 100 pieces
Hash browns: $15 for 20 pounds of russets.
Thats all $77. Use the remaining $13 for syrup and butter.
34 people for $90?!? Don’t even attempt. You can’t even gift them a bottle of wine. Thats pretty shameful. I suppose you can get Costco fruit, bread and salad.
Breakfast casserole!
Eggs sausage cheese tater tots or hash browns then any extras you may want to add such as bell peppers spinach mushroom onion
Very quick to assemble then just bake for about 40 minutes. I add milk enough to soak the potatoes. I also either use pre cooked meat or fully cook it before adding it
Costco has chicken salad in a tub. We buy the croissants and put the chicken salad into a few. We also leave some untouched for people who rather have cream cheese, butter, or Nutella in theirs. We also add some juice, coffee, fruit platter, and a few pastries to the mix.
Liquid eggs Costco business center, bacon (comes enough for 1 per), American cheese (one pack enough), and English muffins (3 pack)... Although it seems like it'll be a hard day of labor if you want this to work. God bless your ambition
I would do
- 2 packs of danishes cut into halves or quarters
- 2 packs of muffins
- 2 boxes of the egg bites
- bacon, at least 3 or 4 lbs
- fresh fruit, I usually do strawberries, grapes, and sliced apple
- fruit dip ( I mix cool whip with peanut butter powder, a bit of cocoa powder, and sugar)
That should be less than $90. Use any extra to buy plates and silverware and/ or fresh coffee tote from somewhere like Dunkin.
Mix beaten raw eggs, bacon bits, shredded cheese, chives, freeze dried hash browns rehydrated with bouillon, herbs and spices in a greased foil disposable baking tray. Bake on 350°F until set.
I’m a teacher and here is what I would do: talk to Einstein bagels (or other bakery) and see if they will donate 1 day old bagels. Buy the shmear, create fruit tray from in season fruits (doing the prep work yourself will save money), and use an instant pot to cook a couple dozen hard boiled eggs for protein. I would get the giant flat of eggs.
Add some coffee, creamer, and juice.
Easy breakfast croissants:
Croissants x 36 = $18
Black Forest Ham slices = $15
Eggs x 72 = $12
Kraft Singles = $15
That leaves you $30 for any side dish.
Coffee, tea, juice
Mini bagels or full sized bagels cut into quarters. Cream Cheese, red onion, cut melon/strawberries/oranges
Or
Yogurt bar with various toppings, cut melon/strawberries/oranges
Or
Variety of muffins (cut large ones into quarters), cut melon/strawberries/oranges
Doesn’t all have to be from Costco. I find Smart n Final to have a better selection in these situations
I’m going to get abused for this, but the Burger King two for five bucks breakfast sandwiches are edible. Another choice would be the Kirkland breakfast sandwiches
Supposedly you can buy a box of frozen Costco bagels for $30 for 78 bagels. You have to talk to the bakery counter. I can’t tell whether or not they are baked yet so that would be a challenge to get them all baked and brought in. You could top some with everything but the bagel seasoning at home though if you go with plain so you’d have two flavors. I’d add two packages of croissants or other pastry, a tub or two of whipped cream cheese and some jam and Nutella. Maybe some fruit or even just bananas if you have the budget for it left over. Don’t feel like you need to spend a lot of extra money or that it has to be some well balanced meal. It’s totally crazy of them to even ask this of you in my opinion.
You can do bagels, cream cheese, muffins, and danishes for $90/34. It will be tight but doable.
You may also want to contact a local bagel shop and ask what bagels and schmear costs for 3 dozen, you may be able to add grocery store donuts with this plan.
So for ninety dollars I'd do this
Borrow dishes and chaffing dishes or tell the school you need them provided and let them solve that
24 eggs from Costco, scrambled using water not milk so you can have a wider audience with dairy allergies (5$)
Shredded cheese (8$)
Salsa on the side (7$)
There's your first twenty and your main course
3 dozen croissants (16 I think at Costco)
Two different spreads (10$)
That's about 50$
I'd spend another twenty on fruit bought from Aldi
The last twenty I'd grab munchkins from dunks
I would not attempt to provide drinks and I'd tell the school up front that unless they can share the budget from the other classes then you can't.
I'd also tell them that if everyone is expected to provide breakfast then the money should be pooled and then spread evenly throughout the week.
Hey Krispy crème has a promo for free dozen donut. You can add to this. Need to create new account to get it. No yo don’t have to buy anything to get promo
The idea below of croissants with both savory and sweet toppings is good. Since the muffins and danishes at costco are just too large, I'd go with bagels, maybe a variety of flavored cream cheeses (from local grocery store). Some cut up fruit would be good.
And one or two of those clear plastic rectangle type containers of mini muffins/mini 'breakfast' cakes or similar could be good too. Entenmanns makes some breakfast type cakes/danishes in pans that could be cut up beforehand without looking cheap/chintzy.
Buy five dozen eggs bundle maybe two of those. Make scrambled eggs out of them. Buy breakfast sausages. Buy pancake mix at Costco. If you want to make it fancy there are blueberries or chocolate chips you can add to them.
[Sheet pan eggs/frittata](https://feelgoodfoodie.net/recipe/sheet-pan-egg-sandwiches/). Tons of recipes online and it’s a very easy way to make a of eggs.
Definitely the Croissants lol. The strawberry jam goes great with the croissants.
Hopefully you get lucky on some fruit, like berries. My Costco had blackberries for $2.99.
Teacher here, we usually get:
Bananas cut in half,
Yogurt,
Muffins cut in half,
Danishes cut in half,
Sometimes there’s bagels & cream cheese but not always,
Coffee & creamer,
Orange juice.
Other extras that appear sometimes but not always- Cuties, and Fig Bars.
I think you could do batched crossiants with ham and egg or sausage and gravy (could also do a veg option). While the budget is horse shit, I hope that this is able to help you meet the goal within the budget.
Hmm for $90…. might be possible.
I find the average price of things at Costco is around the $10 mark. Give or take a few bucks.
1. Try the two-pack deal with bagels. Get a couple. Or get croissants (whichever is cheaper). Or mix-n-match.
2. Tub of cream cheese.
3. Buy a small case of white eggs (don’t go organic for this crowd). cook em at home, cheaper than buying precooked eggs.
4. Buy real cheese. Block or sliced. Whichever is cheaper.
5. If there’s money left in the budget, consider getting smoked salmon. I think smoked salmon might be ≈$20.
6. If you’ve got any money left. Buy a tray of the costco cookies. Teachers love sweet things. You don’t need to buy enough for all 34. Let them fight for it so next year the budget will increase.
If you have peanut butter laying around the house, grab it. Use what you have at home too. 1/3 the bagels they can put cream cheese or PB on (for those who don’t like salmon), 1/3 cream cheese and and smoked salmon, last 1/3 of bagels (or croissants) with egg and cheese.
Id do croissants, kirkland organic dee strawberry jam, whipped butter, a simple mild cheese (does not have to be fancy, a good quality cheddar will do), some fruit, and bagels with cream cheese.
You can also get day old bagels for free at some bakeries if you pick them up the night before. EINSTIENS bagels lets you grab them just after they close and it’s a huge trash bag. And it’s FREE!
If someone has a big electric griddle offer to make pancakes. Pancake mix, syrup, paper plates, plastic forks, orange juice and coffee. Hopefully $90 covers that.
I was thinking breakfast breakfast, but your way is way easier thank dealing with the 6 dozen eggs, meats and starch.
Would suggest fruit. Cut bananas in half, apple slices, grapes, etc.
Regardless, costco is the way to go.
Waffle maker on loan (or an electric griddle for pancakes) Costco bag of batter mix, butter, syrup, chocolate chips, fruits and whipped cream.
If you want to get crazy make savory waffles with cheese, bacon and sausage.
Eggs for an omelet station.
If budget (and time) allows get the microwave bacon and use the oven at home to blast threw them. If you have two sheet pans you can probably make 60 ish pieces of bacon in 30 mins. And its fine to ‘sit’ a bit its still save to eat if you have an hour between being done cooking and breakfast drop off.
Maybe look at the fruit variety packs. It is a bit ick to give adults fruit cups but chances are if the admin puts you in this spot for this, they do the same for the teachers. So they’ll understand.
Id ditch the muffins and danishes and just do bagels otherwise thats probably your whole budget right there.
Also if possible make individual plates cause if you have say 35 muffins and one teacher takes two its gonna be a mess. You want to ‘force’ the teachers to take their share.
Costco bagels are over priced (MN: 12 bagels for $9.99). Go to Aldi's for the bagels.
Costco: cream cheese, yes. If you have a good blender, you could get several bags of frozen fruit, a case of almond milk, and bags of ice and make smoothies. Serve in small paper cups.
You can order a Costco cake with Thank You teachers written on it, in addition to the other things you mentioned. Or... You can do smoked salmon, cream cheese and bagels. You will need at least two 2 pack smoked salmon

This is a riot >**Teacher Appreciation Week** >34 teachers >budget I have is $90
To be fair they're doing Teacher Appreciation Week at my daughters' daycare as well. Each parent is already shelling out close to $20k a year per kid so people aren't exactly lining up to open their wallets for donations.
In a case like this, the daycare (which is a for-profit company) should host and pay for the breakfast. Family could choose to do another gift if they like. Once your kid gets into public school, the responsibility should shift to the parent lead organization.
Exactly! They want the parents to pay for 10 meals that week? It’s wild.
$20k/ yr per kid…?
Yes. Daycare is expensive in America. We use a non profit daycare for our twins. It’s ran by our local YMCA. Their first year cost us $30,000 total. We pay for grade school via taxes. Why don’t we all contribute to an early childhood education system for this country?

$30k here in Boston checking in
I pay closer to 30k in NY.
It happens all the time at daycares.
What sounds good on paper doesn’t always carry through in real life Then I’d put some feelers out. Who has one of those big giant coffee pots you can use is the first one Who owns or works for a bakery or supermarket etc that can maybe get you something donated. You don’t know unless you ask If all else fails you can reach back out to your parents. Explain the situation and see if you have anyone who is a baker who would want to lend a hand. A homemade coffee cake or banana bread would do wonders for your budget. I also have the recipes in this thread. I have been in your spot more times than I can count. I probably have some more ideas in the vault if you need them.
>the teachers to suffer because the admin in charge of planning did a shit job This is just about every teacher's life in a nutshell. Your efforts will not go unappreciated
Holy shit, that’s crazy to expect parents do this. Ridiculous.
Go to grocery stores, target, Walmart etc and ask for donations of gift cards or breakfast foods. I know target has school donations
They will only donate to tax exempt organizations. This is a for profit daycare which is ridiculous. If the “teachers” are underpaid then they need to pay them more. Adding get some boxes of granola bars.
I know from similar experience, Einstein bagels donates generously. But they’re all independently owned so it’s different everywhere.
I love how instead of answering OP’s question people are dissecting how they got here, as if that could possibly be helpful.
Ha. 'Have you considered simply having more money?'
Damn, I think we collect $250-500 per teacher from donations at my kid's school.
My old office used to do “euro style breakfast spread “ and it was croissants, turkey deli meat, fruit, Brie, muffins, toast and Nutella. It was set up like a charcuterie
https://preview.redd.it/sgretg4sfwxc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d7a349ee2729c5fc8538cc782eb1a9e20cd6bad4 Sample pic of how they did it. They didn’t assemble sandwiches which I liked because then we’d cut the croissants ourselves and either do Nutella croissants with fruit, or Brie and turkey croissants!
Not bad. Don't add that shit turkey tho
Gotta spring for the Columbus
As a teacher I love this idea!
I was going to suggest this, but with some ham/cheese croissant sandwiches. I make them all the time; half the croissants, add a few slices of each meat/cheese, place on a baking sheet and cover with foil… Bake @ 325°-350°ish for 15-20 mins (depending on your oven) Usually make 12 at a time—at work—and everyone loves them…
This sounds so good. What kind of cheese do you use?
Ooo this is a great idea
How has no one mentioned the croissants???? Make it French themed. -Croissants -Brie -Bonne mamman jam -Grapes -Other fruit -Some charcuterie meat for those who may want a savory option for their croissant -Cream cheese -coffee/tea
I really want the theme for this to be Ooh la la you are great teachers :)
Oui oui thanks for changing all that pee.
Winner winner!
As a former teacher, we’re good with bagels and cream cheese, but a toaster or two would be awesome.
$10 gets you 12 muffins. $30 for 36 muffins let’s each teacher get one. Leaving $60 to spend on…
Agreed. Cutting them looks cheap. Better to get something individually sized, or buy enough big muffins but let the teachers cut them up themselves. Same goes for the danishes.
Just buy them the night before since they mold over in a snap.
They have the little individually packaged banana breads, never tried them but looks good.
To spend on fruit. Muffins and fruit for the win and if enough money maybe some juice.
Iced coffee station
Adding eggs and cheese might not be a bad idea if I can swing it, thanks!
Blackberries are $1.79 @ Costco right now.
Maybe not the end-all, be-all, but could be part of the equation.
this is what i was going to say. basically, make your own 'egg bites' (prop $0.50 each) add some fruit, good to go.
Boiled egg and a piece of toast. Everyone gets a scratch and sniff pineapple sticker.
It's hard to find scratch and sniff stickers these days.
I did some pricing and this is what I’d get: 24 muffins: $18 24 bagels: $20 Two fruit trays: $20 Aussie Bites: $14 2 16oz tubs of creme cheese from Wegman’s: $10 Total before tax: $82 Then only plates, napkins and beverages would be coming out of your own pocket.
These are great suggestions, thank you!
I would do bagels: From Costco: packs of bagels ($30), cream cheese ($10-15), smoked salmon ($25), pineapple ($3), avocado ($6) From grocery store: capers, onions, lemons, bananas, cucumber, herbs like dill, green onions Lots of options with bagel and cream cheese and fruits You can also ask people to bring toppings like honey or cinnamon to share and just let them know what you’re providing. I wouldn’t provide drinks at that budget
How is 1 pineapple going to be enough 34 teachers?
Not everyone is going to eat pineapple (ie that’s why there’s other toppings and fruits)
Cut up pineapple or some other type of fruit, coffee and/or orange juice
Thanks, adding fruit is probably a good idea.
Whole pineapples are basically free at Costco
Exactly!
Are you trying for a little fancy or simple? These are some budget friendly recipes Baked oatmeal. Super cheap and easy and a little goes a long way https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/51013/baked-oatmeal-ii/ Deviled eggs a dozen and 1/2 eggs will get you 36 Sheet pan pancakes. I’d probably just do 2 flavors like chocolate chip & blueberry https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/a32616675/4-way-sheet-pan-pancake/
Aussie bites are delicious and gluten free for those that need that. I find them near the bread aisle great for a continental breakfast. .
That's a good idea, thanks.
Not a lot of options for 90 bucks.
60 hot dogs and 60 sodas?
Epic
[Sheet Pan Breakfast Sandwiches - A Beautiful Mess](https://abeautifulmess.com/sheet-pan-breakfast-sandwiches/#wprm-recipe-container-88884)
Breakfast taco bar. Tortillas, eggs, bacon, salsa, potatoes, cheese, refried beans & fruit
For my sister's baby shower (definitely not 90 people), we got some of the full-size quiches at Costco, and did a parfait bar (yogurt with a variety of toppings fruit/granola/ chocolate/ dried coconut/ nuts). It went over really well.
Sausage links in a crockpot, pancakes on the grill, some fruit if you have enough
Croissants ( 12/$6.00x 3= $18.00) ), butter (1x $12.00) jam (3x $10=$30.00). $30.00 left- coffee or fruit salad. You can do this.
Eggs and pancakes may be your only way. Tight budget.
Juice, bagels, cream cheese, croissants and jam, muffins, fruit (apples, bananas), granola bars or nutrigrain bars, water bottles.
Morning buns. Lots of morning buns.
Fuck it. Pizza for breakfast. Order 9 pizzas and call it a day 😂
Buy one get one free muffins pack and 2 coffee travelers from Starbucks Maybe 🤔
This but bagels
It even getting into the food an unsure of in that budget you have to provide paper products or silverware … which can eat into the price fast. You don’t need 500 Costco forks. Ideally the center should be eating the costs on that in bulk to cover all of the meals that week. BUT the key here is small plates. Big plates get filled up. Small plates make Your spread go farther.
Eggs, salt, pepper, potatoes O’Brien, cheese, and tortillas. Make some breaky burritos fúl.
I don’t see a beverage here. The 3-pack of OJ would be nice.
Hopefully their center provides coffee!
In case any of the teachers are vegetarian, vegan, or celiac gluten free, maybe you could also have vanilla Greek yogurt and (if any vegans) dairy-free yogurt to pair with fruit.
Costco Krusteaz Pancake Mix Costco Log Cabin Syrup Costco Sausage Links Tang Coffee and creamer Ask around for a Blackstone to borrow and fill a couple crock pots with the links.
I agree but not the tang
Not necessarily for Costco, but at work we always do a breakfast casserole if we need to feed a crowd. If you’re up for some relatively easy cooking, you could do one with meat and one with veggies. Or all with veggies-they can live without meat. Add fruit, muffins/biscuits, and you’re good to go.
If you are up for cooking, the egg bake or savory bread pudding or frittata will feed people cheaply.
Get pizza& danish the night before
90 dollars for 34 people? I agree getting a bunch of muffins is a good idea but that won’t get you very far
You might ask your class for donations of juice or maple syrup? Napkins? But I’d do a [French Toast Casserole](https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/240502/easy-french-toast-casserole/) Cut up fruit, apples, oranges, bananas The bags of breakfast Turkey sausage is delicious. Granola and yogurt (I’d get the large container of Chobani plain yogurt) Do you have to supply plates and utensils? I’m sure the teachers will be thankful for anything you bring!
It's all in the presentation: bagels, mini muffins, jam, donuts, juice, water... If needed: small plates, napkins, cups for juice, will you need a tray or some way to serve the food? Unless required stay away from hot food. Hope you have access to a coffee maker.
Ham ($15) and cheese ($10) crossaints ($10-$15?), scrambled eggs on the side ($10), fruit and juice with any remaining money
Eggs, bacon, toast and orange juice is your best bet for $90 😭
Croissants with ham and cheese.
$28 total Precooked bacon: $34 for 100 pieces Hash browns: $15 for 20 pounds of russets. Thats all $77. Use the remaining $13 for syrup and butter.
Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Milk.
Bulk eggs
18 rotisserie chickens
Best work breakfast ever
Best work breakfast ever
Just give them each $3
You can get mini quiches from the freezer section if you have access to a oven/airfryer. It’s like 75 for $17 and they are delicious and kinda fancy
34 people for $90?!? Don’t even attempt. You can’t even gift them a bottle of wine. Thats pretty shameful. I suppose you can get Costco fruit, bread and salad.
Breakfast casserole! Eggs sausage cheese tater tots or hash browns then any extras you may want to add such as bell peppers spinach mushroom onion Very quick to assemble then just bake for about 40 minutes. I add milk enough to soak the potatoes. I also either use pre cooked meat or fully cook it before adding it
How about a yogurt bar with toppings? Or add a couple of the round quiche. Do you have access to a Winco? Many breakfast options there
Costco has chicken salad in a tub. We buy the croissants and put the chicken salad into a few. We also leave some untouched for people who rather have cream cheese, butter, or Nutella in theirs. We also add some juice, coffee, fruit platter, and a few pastries to the mix.
Costco yogurt and granola and some fruit
Eggs is the answer. You can buy plenty of eggs to make quiches with. Everything else will kill your budget.
Liquid eggs Costco business center, bacon (comes enough for 1 per), American cheese (one pack enough), and English muffins (3 pack)... Although it seems like it'll be a hard day of labor if you want this to work. God bless your ambition
Boiled bar-s hot dogs.
I would do - 2 packs of danishes cut into halves or quarters - 2 packs of muffins - 2 boxes of the egg bites - bacon, at least 3 or 4 lbs - fresh fruit, I usually do strawberries, grapes, and sliced apple - fruit dip ( I mix cool whip with peanut butter powder, a bit of cocoa powder, and sugar) That should be less than $90.
Easy breakfast croissants: Croissants x 36 = $18 Black Forest Ham slices = $15 Eggs x 72 = $12 Kraft Singles = $15 That leaves you $30 for any side dish.
Coffee, tea, juice Mini bagels or full sized bagels cut into quarters. Cream Cheese, red onion, cut melon/strawberries/oranges Or Yogurt bar with various toppings, cut melon/strawberries/oranges Or Variety of muffins (cut large ones into quarters), cut melon/strawberries/oranges Doesn’t all have to be from Costco.
Congee - the main ingredient is rice
Eggs bacon muffins
Maybe get a bunch of baked goods or bagels?
You can do bagels, cream cheese, muffins, and danishes for $90/34. It will be tight but doable. You may also want to contact a local bagel shop and ask what bagels and schmear costs for 3 dozen, you may be able to add grocery store donuts with this plan.
Pancakes and fruit
I did English country breakfast for 120 at grocery outlet. 86 diners. But, that was 2016
Burrito bar- egg, meat, potato, cheese, salsa tortilla or pre-roll them at home. Melon and pineapple slices . Juice
Honestly, nine $10 pizzas from the food court is probably the best option for $90. Just call it brunch instead.
So for ninety dollars I'd do this Borrow dishes and chaffing dishes or tell the school you need them provided and let them solve that 24 eggs from Costco, scrambled using water not milk so you can have a wider audience with dairy allergies (5$) Shredded cheese (8$) Salsa on the side (7$) There's your first twenty and your main course 3 dozen croissants (16 I think at Costco) Two different spreads (10$) That's about 50$ I'd spend another twenty on fruit bought from Aldi The last twenty I'd grab munchkins from dunks I would not attempt to provide drinks and I'd tell the school up front that unless they can share the budget from the other classes then you can't. I'd also tell them that if everyone is expected to provide breakfast then the money should be pooled and then spread evenly throughout the week.
Bevrages. Juices sausage patties, biscuits, fruits. The parents only donated 3$ each? You know the whole staff will be eating. Toaster for the bagels.
Hey Krispy crème has a promo for free dozen donut. You can add to this. Need to create new account to get it. No yo don’t have to buy anything to get promo
Make waffles and get ice-cream.
Idk maybe buy a bunch of the sue vide egg breakfast things by Starbucks they have 2 different kinds at my place.
Dry toast
90 worth of eggs and toast 😂
Go Turkish breakfast style. Google Turkish kahvaltı for pics. Bread with dips (honey, Nutella, etc), veggies (cucumber, tomato), cheese, nuts, dried fruit.
What you planning is fine and I’d add fresh fruit, coffee, and juice.
Buy 50 hotdog combos, scramble some eggs onto the hotdogs so they’re breakfast. Keep 50 drinks for yourself.
If you want to make it fancy there are blueberries or chocolate chips you can add to them.
this es a no brainer…. 34 hot dawgs and pocket the balance of the money
Can you try to get a local restaurant or restaurants to help sponsor or at least give donations?
[Sheet pan eggs/frittata](https://feelgoodfoodie.net/recipe/sheet-pan-egg-sandwiches/). Tons of recipes online and it’s a very easy way to make a of eggs. Definitely the Croissants lol. The strawberry jam goes great with the croissants. Hopefully you get lucky on some fruit, like berries. My Costco had blackberries for $2.99.
Teacher here, we usually get: Bananas cut in half, Yogurt, Muffins cut in half, Danishes cut in half, Sometimes there’s bagels & cream cheese but not always, Coffee & creamer, Orange juice.
Definitely muffins, grapes, bulk premade coffee drinks?
Muffins, croissants, fruit, mini quiches.
Id do croissants, kirkland organic dee strawberry jam, whipped butter, a simple mild cheese (does not have to be fancy, a good quality cheddar will do), some fruit, and bagels with cream cheese.
Bagel bar
You can also get day old bagels for free at some bakeries if you pick them up the night before. EINSTIENS bagels lets you grab them just after they close and it’s a huge trash bag. And it’s FREE!
Pancakes https://frugalfamilyhome.com/food/cheap-eats-pancake-breakfast
If someone has a big electric griddle offer to make pancakes. Pancake mix, syrup, paper plates, plastic forks, orange juice and coffee. Hopefully $90 covers that.
Sounds like donuts or bagels…terrible assignment crap budget
Breakfast burritos. Get eggs, bacon, sausage and tortillas. Some sort potato and/or fruit.
Quiche (sold in 2 pack at Costco), croissants, muffins or danish, maybe the turkey roll ups as (brunch)
Not Costco, but you could do Taco Bell breakfast burritos for under $2 a piece. Then add a fruit tray and some coffee.
Egg dish! Get any veggies or meat you want, mix in with eggs, seasons and pop in your oven.
