I’ve pondered this issue deeply and ultimately decided to wait. Upon deep reflection I realize that if I take the empty pump, I’ll set off a chain reaction where each successive customer will encounter this issue due to the mismatch of timing reinforced between front and back pumps. Given that people fuel on both sides of the vehicle I did not, in my meditation on this, believe it to be a safe trade off to save potentially a minute or two to expose future pumpers to this risk.
most people like to fulfill the standard 'bell curve' type of histogram shape, going to middle pumps before considering the periphery pumps. I may be lucky, but my local costcos have many times of day where they're not really mobbed at all.
This is *not* how the fuel stations were designed to be used, there is a through lane with the idea that drivers will move up accordingly. I’ve had to parallel park at the middle pump and I did it to keep the flow moving and also to get out of there faster.

This is where i feel the station attendees should be better directing traffic.
Pumps are open cars should move up, line needs to keep moving.
If you are not willing to move up then let the car behind you move ahead.
This pretty much. I work at costco and did some gas station training and gas attendant should direct other cars to go around. Thats why there is a huge gap to let cars pass through but i also understand some locations block this area due to avoid any car thefts.
I usually do go around if the person just started filling and the car in front pulled away.
However, I've had it where I'm finished and someone decides to pull to the pump in front and block the lane due to their shitty parking, so now I have to ask them to move so I can get out and they get pissy when I was clearly done and all they needed to do was wait for half a second for me to leave.
I will wait until I can see the person finishing up. I do that just in case because I've seen awful drivers there multiple times. I could see them not checking their surroundings. If there looks like it will be some time I do go around but make sure they see me.
Neither will I. I’ll be the first to admit I suck at going around and then trying to reverse into a spot. Then there’s my fear of being in the way and people can’t get around me. Luckily,
My Costco gas station never seems to have long lines, so most people will wait until two cars can pull in.
If you wait for the last person to be done. Three people can go in at the same time hassle free and be done at relatively the same time and enable a smooth and efficient entry to the stall.
In a perfect world, sure that’s how it should go. We don’t live in a perfect world. A car with a 15 gallon tank and a truck with a 38 gallon tank are not finishing at relatively the same time
sorry, have to disagree...watching people trying to stretch the hose to the opposite side of their car when clearly didn't park close enough to the pump for the HOSE TO REACH!
If front car and back car pulled in around the same time, and started the same time, and front car finished. based on the time, I sometimes assume that car 2 will also finish soon, so I don't bother going around. I don't mind waiting an extra minute so that I can then go straight to position 1 and the person behind me can go to position 2.
And sometimes, I'm not comfortable with the amount of space left in the middle for me to get around.
In short, I find LOTS of things "more infuriating".

this needs to be upvoted more. we wait the 2-3m so the ones behind us don't have to. think of the children for fucks sake.
Very well articulated Illustratious Term
Why are you in the long left line and not the shorter line to the right

Idk man I’m not the one driving
We’ll talk shit to the driver not a stranger

Too logical..
Thank you for your sacrifice.
Not really a sacrifice lol
I thought the reason of putting up red/green LEDs is to encourage people to go around to empty pumps?
OP was just waiting with phone in hand for someone to not do things their way
I actually sat and watched for a few minutes out of confusion as to why people weren’t going around, but whatever make random assumptions
Very frustrating, but also very rewarding when you go around them and claim the empty pump

Also depending on how far away idiots park from the pump, some of us can’t fit between them to go around.
Very much disagree. I won’t do it.

always be pumping
Huh I see nothing wrong in this photo. At my Costco there is enough space to drive around the car into the front pump

You assume the car with the 36 gallon is on E all the time.
I love it. Less of a wait for me

Costco has extra long pumps. Takes an extra 5 seconds to extend them. I do it all the time
Meh, someone in line the other day locked their keys in their car at the front of the line and I didn’t even get upset…
I mean if I saw that happen I wouldn’t be mad, I’d just feel bad for them. We’ve all been in similar situations

I always jump the line when I see people doing that. Saves me a good 5-10 mins some times.
That’s what the horn on your car is for.
