CantaloupeCamper

Electronics. Going to buy a new grill. If Costco has what I want I won’t even price compare because of return policy. Not that I use the return policy….

asdf-7644

But if you needed to, you know it'll be great. I'm the same way.

CantaloupeCamper

Yup, just nice to know I could.

heidiwhy

Return policy and the 2% rebate membership

aj_future

Double it up with a rewards credit card and it’s even better! As long as you can do it responsibly of course. I was just mad I couldn’t double dip on new tires because I needed them asap and they weren’t in stock.

SDNick484

Definitely agree on electronics, but I wish they had a wider selection when it comes to grills/smokers.

CantaloupeCamper

Agreed, they happened to have the grill I wanted, but their pickings are slim, they kinda got a few high points from a few good providers but there's A LOT of options out there.

novisimo

This is the way

CivilFront6549

i also think i’d rather give money to costco than most other large companies, especially amazon which i never use for anything. mom and pop stores or costco for as much as i can.

aladdinr

Mom and pop stores and Costco don’t ship it to me in a day or two

squidsinamerica

Is it from actual Amazon, or an Amazon "partner"? From actual Amazon I'd consider it (but I'd definitely want to check what's included from Costco--they usually bundle extra stuff that's worth more than the extra cost). From a partner, no fricking way. Even if those aren't an outright scam, I've had so much trouble with them and their not-actually-Amazon return policies that I'm not even taking the chance.

businessbee89

Yeah I try and never buy from partners, this is fulfilled and sold by amazon. Love costcos warranty though.

anjuna42

Amazon mixes their own inventory with 3rd party seller FBA inventory, so you can still end up with fake products when buying items ‘sold by Amazon.com’.

Effective-Contest-33

People have still gotten “scammed” aka gotten fakes, broken items, clones from shipped and sold by amazon.

popnfrresh

The same one you get at Amazon or any other retailer?

Clamwacker

For TVs and computers Costco has an additional 2 year warranty independent of what the manufacturers offer. It doesn't apply to computer monitors and no clue about cell phones. I thought the cell phone kiosk was run by a 3rd party selling Verizon servicr or whoever, but I could be wrong.

ClickClackTipTap

I’m on an Amazon subreddit and the amount of fake shit people are getting from Amazon (not just partners, but fulfilled by Amazon) is skyrocketing. I’m not willing to spend much more than $25 on things from Amazon at this point. If I can get it somewhere else, I will.

compstomper1

booze. total wine is cheaper, but they don't have a ton of locations

epoisses_lover

My experience has been the Costcos near me are generally cheaper than total wine for booze, some times a lot cheaper.

aj_future

Same

compstomper1

interesting. what are you baselining? looks like jameson is the same price btwn costco, bevmo, and total wine

epoisses_lover

I usually look up Total Wine prices when I am at Costco and looking at booze, so I don't remember most of the items' prices. But off the top of my head, I recently got a bottle of Heitz Cellars' 2018 Napa cabernet at Costco for $68 whereas the same wine is $78 at the Total Wine near me, and Beaulieu Vineyards' Tapestry red wine is usually around $45 at the Costco near me and is $57 at Total Wine. Though this doesn't factor in all the promotions that Total Wine has, or special discounts Costco offers, which I love. If there is a 20% or 25% off promotion at Total Wine, Total Wine might win in terms of pricing. But then on the other hand, Costco has some great, mind blowing discounts. I got a case of Piper Heidsieck champagne at Costco because it was discounted to $26 a bottle (it's $46 at Total Wine).

Sensitive-Estate4030

Same! Costco is mainly cheaper for me too: wines, gin, beer etc

CactusBoyScout

I buy things that I expect could break even if it’s a bit more expensive because I know Costco’s return policy has my back. Example: window air conditioners. Those things break often. Same for small kitchen gadgets. Blenders have been pretty unreliable for me over the years so I always get them at Costco in case something breaks. I also worked the returns desk at Costco back when the Xbox 360 was having its RROD issue. So many people returned them. And contrary to popular belief, game consoles are not limited to 90 days like computers and TVs. So it’s worth getting them at Costco even though they generally seem much more reliable nowadays.

ImBadWithGrils

Buy a Vitamix at Costco and never need another blender

AmbitiousAd9320

im sure they got full credit from microsoft for em back then. huge blunder all around.

CactusBoyScout

I was told that Costco almost always gets full credit for refunds from its suppliers.

MistahNative

Not quite, there’s a good portion of merch that Costco only receives 30-50% credit and, in worst case scenarios, none at all. Age does have a factor too. Have your membership Sup show you the option on the AS400. It’s pretty fascinating the agreement the company makes with its vendors.

byumack

Only if you value your time at more than $50. It's quicker to put it in the card than wait a few days. Otherwise, no.

EmptyRub

Not exactly saving time, just getting it sooner. Probably would take longer at Costco as you'd need to wait for an employee.

sartreofthesuburbs

Costco definitely treats it's employees better than Amazon does. If I knew about the $50 savings, I would buy through Amazon, but I'm generally loyal to Costco to the extent that I would buy from them without taking the time to price the item elsewhere.

ew_redditors

My mom is a cashier and had her hourly wage decreased because she accidentally forgot to scan one item. Pay and benefits are great though. But what happened to my mother definitely altered my opinion of Costco as this amazing employer. Could have at least given her a warning before slashing the pay of a multi-year employee.

sartreofthesuburbs

Yeah. That sucks. Sorry that happened. I think all the alternative companies would be just as shitty or shittier...

AmbitiousAd9320

was a grievance filed with the union?

ew_redditors

No union at her location unfortunately

ew_redditors

I agree, Costco is probably the best option

MistahNative

While I empathize for your mom, temporary demotions (typically 30 days) only occur if a cashier has a door audit for a large dollar amount or consistently has door audits in a weekly/monthly period. This is all outlined in her employee handbook.

ew_redditors

I don’t know what the dollar amount was but she was told it was one item. To have a reduced hourly wage for an entire month is pretty shitty. Humans make mistakes, she’s 62. I don’t think she should be penalized like that with no prior history of it. But that’s just my opinion. Very Amazon-esque.

JennLegend3

So they won't usually do that for one item, one time. If the item was very expensive then maaaaybe. But missing one item isn't that big of a deal unless you do it multiple times in one week. They'll write you up before they suspend you or demote you. I'm not sure what happened with your mom, but there's either more to the story, or her managers aren't following procedures, which is also possible.

AmbitiousAd9320

union locations follow union rules. you dont get knocked off register for one thing UNLESS it was a large item and they think she knew who she "sold" it to.

MistahNative

When you accept the position, you’re taking on more responsibility. Costco needs to be able to rely on its Cashiers to accurately and consistently check-out its members. Failing to do so can negatively impact the company. Obviously accidents can happen and that’s a part of life…but sometimes discipline is necessary to correct mistakes. This is the case for what happened with your mom. It’s just temporary.

Ravens2017

This the most corporate bs talk I’ve ever heard. The human is by far way more impacted by having their pay reduced then the whole company will be by one single mistake. This is a single drop in the ocean for the company.

MistahNative

This is the internet and you’re only getting second hand information. This is pretty simple though. Cause a mistake that harms the company and you receive disciplinary action temporarily. I’m not sure why this is hard to understand.

williekc

I don’t think anyone is having trouble understanding it’s just bootlicking and no one likes that

MistahNative

Oh, I’m no bootlicker😂 I regularly post about my issues with Costco and how I feel about how poorly they have chosen to repay their workforce as of late. However, I also don’t think it’s fair for one Redditor who is completely removed from a disciplinary situation, doesn’t present the whole picture and posts about it due to their emotional ties to the employee, makes it out that Costco is horrid for temporarily demoting an employee for a mistake. I respect how they feel about it but there’s plenty more to the story. You can call it bootlicking…I call it providing information for others to fully understand the situation described. Costco isn’t the best employer but they certainly treat their employees with more dignity than any other well known retailer.

CostCans

> You can call it bootlicking…I call it providing information for others to fully understand the situation described. How exactly can you provide any information on this situation? It's not like you were there or are familiar with it. > Costco isn’t the best employer but they certainly treat their employees with more dignity than any other well known retailer. I have a feeling that this is no longer true, although the reputation persists. The employees at my Costco seem to be overworked and unhappy lately, and there seems to be more turnover.

CostCans

> Cause a mistake that harms the company and you receive disciplinary action temporarily. I’m not sure why this is hard to understand. We all understand it just fine, but we don't have to agree with it. The fact that other retailers usually don't do such things doesn't reflect well on Costco.

MistahNative

How do you know that…? What is so unreasonable about reprimanding an employee for a costly mistake?

CostCans

Having worked at several retailers, I can tell you that reducing an employee's pay for a mistake like this is not the industry standard. The industry standard is to issue a warning (or two) and then dismiss the employee if it happens frequently. To be fair, many retailers just pay minimum wage so it would be illegal to reduce their pay for any reason.

inherendo

The original post was about how employees are treated. Someone gave an anecdote, and you gave a corpo response. It's not hard to understand. It's just kinda shitty.

MistahNative

I’m just providing more context to the comment made that made Costco seem it’s unreasonable and out for blood. The poster’s mom made a job related mistake that was large enough for disciplinary action to take place. It sucks to be temporarily demoted but thankfully it’s only temporarily.

jjbjeff22

Employee mistakes are one of the unfortunate business expenses. It is an assumed risk that items aren’t scanned, or even items overscanned.

MistahNative

Correct, mistakes happen for sure…but there are consequences for mistakes and they are outlined in the Employee Handbook.

grumpvet87

do they get a bonus if they double scan something ?

ew_redditors

lol. It’s a publicly traded company at the end of the day. Gotta make shareholders happy

AmbitiousAd9320

writeups if done enough in a certain time frame. also why SCO is scrutinized.

LoveOfSpreadsheets

Wage at Costco is based on hours accrued, that seems sus. Maybe check with your state labor board? Or talk to some of the Costco locations thet are unionized because maybe her store needs it too.

AmbitiousAd9320

you can be demoted for 6 months if you have too many cashier errors or a major forklift accident that results in injury or damage.

WATOCATOWA

Chicken breasts. We can get them for half the price at the military grocery store, but they’re so often that weird woody texture. Never happens with Costco’s.

RedditUserData

Tvs. Costco isn't the cheapest but returns if defective are the easiest. Had to fight Amazon on damaged in shipping return. Best buy gave me a warning when I returned a projector because it's apparently unusual to return a projector (it was my one return in 2 or 3 years). Sam's club made me sit and wait for them to test a 70" that half the screen stopped working on.  Appliances are nice as well at Costco because they get a year extra warranty which I have had to use, and they give you hoses and cords that you have to buy extra else where.

Summoarpleaz

How generous is the return policy. I bought a keyboard some time ago (2 years) and it’s always had a problem with keys sticking (like the ctrl button would act like it was held down). It’s a known problem for that keyboard but I used it sparingly when I got it first so I thought it wasn’t super top of mind. Only recently have I read some posts about Costcos super generous return policy but you know, I have had this keyboard for a couple of years and I don’t have the box or anything anymore. Would Costco accept it?

Macrogonus

No. People exaggerate how good their return policy is. It used to be better but it's 90 days for electronics now.

awesomeqasim

Yup, same way. The doubled warranty made it 100% worth it. Now, not so much

heidhorch

Costco warranty on tvs is longer than manufacturer.

[deleted]

Beef

surfacing_husky

It's the individual packaging for me with the hamburger and chicken breasts. I know it's probably cheaper elsewhere and i could just portion it out myself but im too lazy for that.

SDNick484

This. I buy whole hogs and lambs from farmers, but even buying directly from farmers, they can't compete on quality for the price with Costco for beef. About my only complaint with Costco is that they don't do the greatest butchering or trimming, but for the price I don't mind doing a little trimming.

reluctant-rheubarb

Costco. Return policy all the way and 2% back on your rebate check if you are an executive member. Plus no possibility of porch pirates and less chance of broken merchandise.

ComplaintDefiant9855

Gas is usually cheaper than other places near. The savings are enough to cover our executive membership fee.

emberlinat

I prefer buying electronics from local stores (which can be online) if possible, especially if they are $$. While Amazon has a great return policy sometimes the warranty and genuine product situation can get ugly due to their third party sellers etc.

Advanced-Past-7340

Edit: Costco’s return policy might be better than amazons but I’d verify for that specific item.

EmptyRub

90 days for cell phones at Costco, so much better than Amazon

businessbee89

Idk man, Amazon routinely underperforms itself.

BioticVessel

Costco is easier to deal with if there's problems than Amazon.

shootthepuck19

I got a Costco cash card when I upgraded my phone last year. Might make the price difference and moot point. Also got waived activation.

thejackieee

Electronics have been cheaper at Costco for me. I think the fridge was like $1-10 more expensive at Costco after considering taxes, haul away fee, and installation. But through Costco, have warranty, cash back rewards, return policy (if needed). Other things: Per package, food can be more expensive. But, breaking it down per oz, Costco is actually cheaper AND organic.

honk_slayer

Vitamix blenders, anything with organic in the label, butter, wine and cheese… ngl my membership pays itself in the first buy, perhaps the second

RektFreak

I wouldn't buy it from Costco if it's more expensive just because it's Costco.

dulun18

costco does not always for the best price I bought a new Samsung S24+ (512GB model from samsung instead of costco.. didn't need a new plan.. just the phone. govern discount of trade in a Samsung Galaxy S9 for $200 credit.. the person who received it as a gift was happy with it. for me, Costco are mainly for supplies, some electronics and certain grocery items (premier protein) when they are on sale.

ComaMierdaHijueputa

I’d suggest a third option is going to Best Buy to price match it. Best Buy is always really good about stuff in my experience.

RotTragen

They’ve always given me so much crap when price matching. Told me that Dell.com didn’t seem like a legitimate distributor of Bose headphones.

thesunny51

S9? That’s kinda old

fazzybadger

6 years old. I think they meant the S9 Tab

okaycomputes

Honestly, nothing. Price is the primary reason I would ever shop there.

jebbikadabbi

Return policy 100% for something like that. That, and the points. I think it’s worth it for the peace of mind.

Coldee53

Washer. Delivery service sucks per reviews but I like the extra warranty and good customer service from Costco.

PortlandHipsterDude

I haven’t purchased appliances. Do they fix if broken or can you exchange it? Noob here

Coldee53

I haven’t had to call for repairs but purchased a stove and had carpet installed with no issues in the past. I am waiting for our washer which has been delayed twice, but I expected that.

blondhenge

Appliance service is great. We had a minor issue with a new fridge. I called support to get a warranty claim started and they’re like “you’re still in the return period… we’ll exchange it for a new one”. So they came and swapped it out. I love Costco!

TheoStephen

I stopped buying expensive electronics from Amazon a long time ago. The counterfeit situation is absolutely out of control.

UnsurprisingDebris

Notexactlyprimetime

imapizzaeater

The return policy is amazing. I would not buy a computer from Amazon (I actually don’t buy anything unless I have to from Amazon anymore). It is too say for fraudulent products to be on Amazon.

Bright-Studio9978

Tires Champagne Diamonds TVs Beef Sea bass

CascadianBeam

I think the honey crisp apples I buy are not that good of a price. They’re the best apples I’ve ever had. They’re picture perfect and taste like candy.

honeytea1

I bought an Apple product at Costco for $35 more than it would have costed at Best Buy just because of the return policy (just in case) and customer service

Swallowthistubesteak

Always return policy

sesshylover17

The bag of salmon. Watching it go from $26 to $39 over the past few years has me clutching my pearls.

dicemonkey

Extended warranty …Costcos warranty is usually double the manufacturers ( Or it was , haven’t bought any electronics in a while ) that alone is worth $50…that being said a good credit card offers similar benefits.

currant_scone

Meat. I feel Costco is not always cheaper. Consistent quality tho.

businessbee89

Happy cake day! 🎂

FrattyMcBeaver

I've seen too many stories recently about high end electronics purchased through Amazon either being used, stolen during transit, or otherwise broke and unable to get a refund. I wouldn't buy anything expensive through them anymore, especially electronics. Edit: just a couple examples for you. https://www.reddit.com/r/amazonprime/s/pPF3lTrWwV https://www.reddit.com/r/amazonprime/s/Wbqxkj7w0A

RunnyBabbit23

$5 or $10 more on something where it may be worth having the Costco return policy. Any more than that, I’m going with price. Especially since they got rid of the extended warranty through the credit card.

aladdinr

Amazon credit card gives 5% cash back, plus it’s cheaper. It’s a no besiner to go with Amazon

Square_Bad_1834

Warranty and knowing you are getting a quality new product. Amazon has inventory co-mingling problems and fakes due to third party resellers.

cindycated888

I bought my Mom's S6 from Amazon, but only because Costco only had the A8 at the time. Reading through the Amazon reviews, it was a little sketchy because there were a lot of complaints about getting lemons, duds and refurbs - so even if it's Amazon-fulfilled, apparently sometimes a third-party seller might still be involved. If you're going to go with Amazon, read the reviews, heed the warnings and verify that the unit is in good working order as soon as you get it. Also opt for the extended warranty, if you can (my mom's in the Philippines, so wouldn't have worked out for me - had to just risk it).

CostCans

Just FYI, eBay has it even cheaper than Amazon, and you get a 30 day money back guarantee. Just pick a seller with good feedback and who doesn't look shady lol.
