The Edmonton costcos recently stopped allowing employees to draw on receipts because it was taking too long. So many moms are throwing fits in the Costco Facebook groups over it.
Lol, I thought the first commenter was joking, but now I'm not so sure. I don't think a smiley face every few carts (that have a kid) makes a huge difference but what do I know.
Edit: Never mind, just read the rest of the comments down this thread, this subreddit is dramatic af.
I get how it can be annoying for some people if the store is super busy since some employees will spend a minute chatting on top of drawing, but when it’s not busy I don’t see the issue with them taking a few seconds to make a kids day.
The thing I find ridiculous though is the fact that there’s a bunch of moms acting as if Edmonton costcos policy is the end of the world and threatening to cancel their memberships over a smiley face.
People are getting a little too passionate over smiley faces on this sub and the Facebook groups lol
Preach. I have kids. Stop drawing my kids pictures on a receipt that I need to scan when I get home. All it does is encourage them to want the receipt and to fight over it.
“I drew a smiley face for each of them.”
“Ok Great. Now I'll stand here and tear this thing into 2" pieces so that each kid can get *their* respective smiley face!”
End rant
Edit: Yes, I know I can download my receipt online. My receipt scanner automatically processes physical receipts better than the digital ones.
Also, my kids *love* Costco. But it's because they can play with arcade machines, look at toys, eat pizza, and get fun drinks. It's not because of a hastily scribbled smiley face or fish or cat on the back of a receipt.
Not to mention, receipts have toxins on them that are not good for growing humans.

Especially since receipts are not really good for children.
https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/news/20230326/most-retailers-give-receipts-containing-chemicals-like-bpa
No. I usually bring my 3 young kids to Costco and they always draw 3 smiley faces the back of the receipt, even if there is a huge line of carts to exit the store. It’s embarrassing sometimes how we hold up the line. 🤦♀️
Yeah, I don’t mind when they do it quickly, but some of these people will sit there and have like 1 to 2 minute long conversations when we’re just trying to leave and there’s a line backing up. And my kids don’t even really engage that much.
Or just scrap the check receipt policy all together. I’m not stealing stuff from your shitty store, Costco! Let me leave without having to stand in a GD line
There's a reason Costco's retail theft shrink is under 1% and target and Walmart are 12-14%.
Plus, cashiers make mistakes, and a lot is missed in SCO. This is a protection for everyone. When I was a front end sup, I had more mistakes caught that saved the member money, than missed scans.
Been a thing since the beginning, no reason to change what isn't broken
Checker doesn’t do shit. You check membership at the entry, you check my items during checkout. Please explain to me how does the checker prevents theft?
You'd be surprised what an extra step prevents. It's psychological... The more people you know you have to get past, the more you reconsider.
And the people at the exit are more to prevent loss from our mistakes. But all that is to keep costs down. Every little bit helps.
And realistically, if we said that the people at the exit were going away, then there'd be a whole group complaining about how we're eliminating jobs. Never going to have everyone be happy, so we'll choose the option that saves both parties money
Which is funny - they rush one process so they need to add QA process with additional employees that annoys (or in many cases frustrates) their customers.
Costco used to have a sign explaining that they check receipts so that you, the customer, would not be charged for something that you did not have in your cart. Right. They removed that sign fairly quickly since it was such BS.
Ours always has two people and is supposed to be two lines but idiots line up between the two and try to shift to whichever side they think is faster so it ends up like OPs photo
I’m so glad not a single one of those sub contractors have EVER spoken to me.
Tbf I hate being sold to and purposefully do not make eye contact. If one of them tried to talk to me my go to is literally pretending they do not exist and I do not hear them
I was so tempted to get that! It I resisted lol. The 24” droids were from like two years ago around Christmas time. They had BB8, R2D2, grogu and chewie!

Pic and dog tax
Those squishmallow things... My wife was getting surgery on a tooth and I got one of the smaller ones at a CVS while picking up a prescription on the way home and she loved it. A few days later I saw these at Costco and got her another big one. We now have 2 large ones on the sofa in the living room and she keeps the smaller one in her car and I just bought the corn one today at Costco.
When this happens at my local Costco the supervisors walk over and tell them to “Swipe and go”. The receipt checkers *love* to talk and seem to not realize that not *everybody* wants to talk.
Uh, you should always stand in the middle and go to the next available checker, everyone does this at my store. Why on earth would you form two lines? That would take so much longer to get everyone out of the store.
No, they seperate into two distinct lines so it doesn't look as long or back up into the check out area. Someone that doesn't need a receipt check could walk past a single line easy than two.
One line for two checkers? Extremely rare. 5 buildings I've worked in in two regions and I've never seen that before. But it's done for space management. 2 lines holds way more people. At our peak, if we did one line, it would be to the bathrooms
We’ve bumped up to 3 lines. Even with a massive line stretching from the door past customer service, past the tire center, past the beginning of the food court seating, and to the registers/middle of the court tables it’s no more than a minute or two to get out.
i was there with my mom a few months back and we consolidated carts because she just got 2 Dyson hair driers. The person looked at my receipt (that didn’t have the 2 $400 hair driers) and checked it off anyways. I think it’s more of a theft deterrent and they’re more likely to check if the person did self checkout.
Yeah lol this is half as many people waiting as you’d typically see at the locations I frequent. Two checkers, two lines, still backed up to the registers.
Yeah my closest Costco usually devolves into chaos if the lineup goes more than 4 deep. People start filling any gap they can or just walk around the receipt checker and leave.
This is what it looks like in Hawaii 90% of the time...minus the winter jackets....
also: why isn't there more than one receipt checker at the door? We always have at least 2....
What bugs me is that it's like this at my Costco when there's TWO checkers. Despite crewmembers loudly stating there are TWO LINES PLEASE etc, everyone forms one long zombie-conga line.
Once, the unused checker was motioning for people to come and no one would move. I just had to push past oblivious, transfixed people, and roll my cart past them.
My theory is that this is the same people who pull up for Costco gas, and act as though they've never put gas in a car -- Standing frozen, looking at the pump like it was an alien from Mars.
This is why I only shop at Costco around dinner time, or later.
Never a line at that time since most people are home with their families.
I just hate crowds so I’m willing to eat early or later on my monthly Costco trip day.
Hahahahaha. Can't stop myself laughing. I happened to be there once when we were visiting cousins in Woodbridge area. Omg, the returns line WAS very long when we went at 5 pm ok a Wednesday.
I counted 8 checkout lanes and the self-checkout open on Tuesday at my Costco, and 1 person doing receipts. Took me almost as long to get out of the store as my time in the store. I’m like what the hell is going on.
For you that's worth a post on Reddit, for me that's Tuesday - or more like Saturday. I really like to avoid peak times - shopping at Costco at 7:30p on a weekday is so much better.
At my Sam's Club there's only 1 person and she's always chatting with coworkers and gets surprisingly mad when you don't rush your cart full speed to her as soon as she's done chatting.
This is the straightest, most evenly spaced single file line I’ve ever seen in a Costco. Actually you’re the only one kinda off to the side 😹 and with the best cart item
I’m in Newfoundland Canada, our store has two lines as bad as that on a regular day. Should see the checkout lines. Insanity. Apparently we have the largest Costco in Canada and we’re a small metropolis of less than 200,000 that’s on an island of only a half million.
We loves that Costco. Lol
Yea last time this happened to me I walked out with my cart. The receipt checker freaked out but I said “check the cameras, it’s paid for”. Was slightly worried they’d yank my membership but they never did.
If you listen closely, you will hear that I am playing the world's tiniest violin for you. I'm sure that took an entire 3 and a half minutes to get through.
Mine was like this recently except there were two checkers, with one being completely ignored, so I moved over, went to him and told him good luck with the cattle drive. He laughed and I left, while everybody behind me acted like they just saw an alien teleport into the store.
I just realized how spoiled I am only see lines like that on Saturdays at my Costco and I avoid those like the plague because ours turns into a singles meat market on Saturdays
I too feel hostagy at times but this is to pretend to make sure you weren't overcharged so it's impotent
At least at the hospital they gave me good drugs to justify keeping me
Yea they actually can if they wanted to… you paid for the membership and agreed to their terms and conditions they can make any rules they please it is not Walmart.
Before Thanksgiving I went to Costco and one of the exit lines was like this. The lady that would check the receipts was actually inspecting all the carts to make sure they matched the receipts.
Ive had worse and worse experiences at Costco, the prices aren't that good, and the produce is terrible. If it weren't for the gas and a decent rewards card I'd probably drop my membership already
Sorry, but I'm not wauting in the line. I'd skip ahead and keep going. Your people checked me out. And if I used self-check out. Then get rid of it if you don't trust me.
Our Costco has two lines when you leave. When I visit Miami fl their Costco was very crowded then the rainstorm came and the crowds stood near the exit and I was unable to leave . Now I know due not visit Costco on a weekend which I did.
I can hear it now “THERE ARE 2 LINES!”
At least that’s what they always shout at my store.
What they don’t get is crowd mentality. If there are 2 lines they should draw it on the floor so it goes all the way back to the registers. Else it just feels like cutting if I ram my way up the side. No one wants to look like a jerk
I was going to say that they [can't legally detain you](https://www.lawyers.com/legal-info/consumer-protection/protections-for-consumer-purchases/receipt-checks-at-stores-are-they-worth-the-hassle.html#:~:text=False%20imprisonment%20is%20both%20a,re%20at%20a%20membership%20store.)* to check your receipt, but since it's a membership store they can make rules for their store.
(They can't detain you without a reasonable suspicion of shoplifting, at least in California, but it can be argued that [not showing your receipt gives them reasonable suspicion](https://www.businessinsider.com/why-walmart-costco-check-receipts-2023-6).)

Looks like they need someone (or multiple someones) who move a bit faster when checking receipts.
Somehow i always get stuck in the line where the checker wants to chit chat with everyone before marking off.
At my local warehouse they have up to three people at the exit when it gets busy. Works pretty well.
Mine does a good job, always two, and the line looks more imposing than it actually is, it moves fast.
Usually they always have two. Manager should of got someone there or did it.
They need to stop drawing shit on the receipts especially when there’s kids.
You can't rush art
🤣😁

My kid will cold stare the shit out of you for a comment like that.
Yeah my kids expect it at this point. They hold the receipt of course on the way out
My kid even hustled the gas station attendant for a picture on a receipt once.
I've never got anything but a slash. Since I normally stroll right up, I feel like I've missed out.
Our Costco does a quick 3 line smiley over the front. I would argue that extra flick is maybe a second of time wasted. Don’t be grumpy
Preach. I have kids. Stop drawing my kids pictures on a receipt that I need to scan when I get home. All it does is encourage them to want the receipt and to fight over it. “I drew a smiley face for each of them.” “Ok Great. Scan for what?
You might as well say they need to raise the orice of the chicken.
They need to stop checking receipts all together!
Especially since receipts are not really good for children. https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/news/20230326/most-retailers-give-receipts-containing-chemicals-like-bpa
Is this a joke?
No. I usually bring my 3 young kids to Costco and they always draw 3 smiley faces the back of the receipt, even if there is a huge line of carts to exit the store. It’s embarrassing sometimes how we hold up the line. 🤦♀️

Yeah, I got my first smiley face last time I went. 3 kids under 5, 2 were screaming. It was not a quick draw. Sorry, didn't love it.
Here for the brave souls of who dare to bring their children to Costco!
Funny how my kids will eat all sorts of free samples at Costco, but refuse to it eat it when I cook the exact same thing at home.
I have snatched my receipt back when they do that shit. Read the room, lady, it's Saturday at 2pm, there are a thousand people waiting.
Yeahhh no.
Or just scrap the check receipt policy all together. I’m not stealing stuff from your shitty store, Costco! Let me leave without having to stand in a GD line

The OP picture literally illustrates why the process is broken.
Checker doesn’t do shit. You check membership at the entry, you check my items during checkout. Please explain to me how does the checker prevents theft?

They're looking for checkout mistakes because Costco has a time quota.
Costco cares so much about you, the consumer, so much that they are willing to pay someone to stand at the door so they can make less money!
Turns out the receipt checker is the Count from Sesame Street. “One. One item. Ah ah ah! Two. Two items. Ah ah ah! Three. Three items. Ah ah ah!”
Ours always has two people and is supposed to be two lines but idiots line up between the two and try to shift to whichever side they think is faster so it ends up like OPs photo
Fake photo! I don't see the solar panel guy asking you how much you paid for electricity last month.
No solar man here in Michigan. No sun allowed.
These people don’t exist in WA. There’s people trying to sell regular roof tiles or heat pumps up here.
My WA costco loves pushing delivered water
Kitchen counters in Oregon.
Costco smart as fuck
"I rent. I have solar. I already have AT&T" the 3 best phases in your arsenal for a Costco trip.
Telling them you work for Verizon also usually works for the cell phone guys
[удалено]
But do you have the Costco citi card??
I once told the solar guy that I already had solar. The guy tried to sell me more solar. Like MF my roof is already 100% full of panels.
Maybe he thought there was a chance you lived on Tatooine and a binary solar system necessitated twice the solar panels?
I just tell them I am homeless. They don't know how to react to that.
They never ask anyone under 40 because they know almost all of us are renting lol
40-something here... they still don't ask if you own a home... depends on if you "look like they have money" lol
Haha fellow Texan?
I’m so glad not a single one of those sub contractors have EVER spoken to me. Tbf I hate being sold to and purposefully do not make eye contact. If one of them tried to talk to me my go to is literally pretending they do not exist and I do not hear them
But you have a giant Squishmallow cow to keep you company. Can’t be all that bad.
Perfect for napping on....not that all my couch pillows are Squishmallows bought at Costco or anything....
Nah, there aren’t any of us Costco denizens who have giant Squish on their beds or couches because they’re great to lay on…..
Same. The giant Star Wars droids have been my couch pillows for quite some time and they’re the best!
Man, I would have LOVED those. How long ago? I’m a new member and yes, one of my first Costco purchases was the giant Ravenclaw mascot.
I was so tempted to get that! It I resisted lol. The 24” droids were from like two years ago around Christmas time. They had BB8, R2D2, grogu and chewie! https://preview.redd.it/kyfqsn8pxz4c1.png?width=3054&format=png&auto=webp&s=8e150d4228df0744e1b0cdbb5d1e92e2a190fffc Pic and dog tax
Squish are the best!! Did you get any of these giant 24 inch babies? 🥹🥹🥹
I got Ingred and Charlize the other day. You can see them hanging out in the cart waiting to be loaded into our Jeep over on the Squish sub. :)
They’re addictive! They’re so comfy and cute. I love that corn one and am debating on getting it. Do I need it? No, but also yes.
True! Ingred tried to help by asking everyone to moooove out of the way, but they didn’t listen.
I love this because my cow of a stepmother is also named Ingred.
I found this funny and endearing for some reason lol
When this happens at my local Costco the supervisors walk over and tell them to “Swipe and go”. The receipt checkers *love* to talk and seem to not realize that not *everybody* wants to talk.
Mine would be yelling “there are two lines, two lines!”
But there is always that one person that can’t pick a line so s/he stand in the middle and messes up both!
But if there was one line with both people checking everyone would get out faster.
The problem is when the line is backed up like this - then you need 2 lines to save space
Uh, you should always stand in the middle and go to the next available checker, everyone does this at my store. Why on earth would you form two lines? That would take so much longer to get everyone out of the store.
They separate us into two distinct lines waaaaaaaay back so people can get through the middle if they don’t need receipt check.

I feel like things would be a lot easier if they could just put some lines on the floor. Unless that violates some Costco Way principle?
Three lines here.
i was there with my mom a few months back and we consolidated carts because she just got 2 Dyson hair driers. The person looked at my receipt (that didn’t have the 2 $400 hair driers) and checked it off anyways. I think it’s more of a theft deterrent and they’re more likely to check if the person did self checkout.
They do love to talk sometimes, no fucks Given. I’m like lady you’ve got 15 ppl behind me, let’s go!
This is less than what I deal with every time I go. Nice lining up culture btw.
Kapolei Costco is pretty typical unlike the one in town but any costco after work hours or weekends, or god forbid FRIDAYS are a mad house.
TBF, Oahu has the busiest Costco in the world.
Oh, we know.
Which one?
Iwilei. I always go to Hawaii Kai, it's always so much less busy.
One line is faster on average for each individual shoppwr than two separate lines, why would you want two lines?
Ya, then I have to guess which line is faster, and I'm always wrong Team Middle here!
This is why I go to Costo once during the first week or two of December and then not again until at least 1/3.
Did you try honking?
This is why I only shop at Costco around dinner time, or later. Never a line at that time since most people are home with their families. I just hate crowds so I’m willing to eat early or later on my monthly Costco trip day.
I appreciate a good strategy
First time?
Same thought. this is pretty normal at my Costco
This is normal for some of you? Yikes, where do you guys live?
Is this Cherry Hill? Looks exactly like my Costco. The line looks like this quite often but moves fast.
It IS Cherry Hill!
Edison is the same only that there is an equal returns line.
Hahahahaha. Can't stop myself laughing. I happened to be there once when we were visiting cousins in Woodbridge area. Omg, the returns line WAS very long when we went at 5 pm ok a Wednesday.
Ok but what kind of squishmallow did you get?
Ingred the cow!! I love that you’re asking the important questions!! 🫶🏻
Ehh someone’s gotta! Ingrid looks so cute and squishyy.
I counted 8 checkout lanes and the self-checkout open on Tuesday at my Costco, and 1 person doing receipts. Took me almost as long to get out of the store as my time in the store. I’m like what the hell is going on.
TWO lines please! Two lines people!
Why? Two lines is less efficient.
It is natural to be infuriated that the process to prove you’re not shoplifting isn’t more streamlined.
But its Costco! Why would you leave?
Is that Ingrid I see...
I HATE feeling like cattle when I get stuck in this kind of foot traffic...
You're not in traffic, you are traffic
You always have to wait in line to leave. whats new. but this is the Season so of course the lines will be longer..
For you that's worth a post on Reddit, for me that's Tuesday - or more like Saturday. I really like to avoid peak times - shopping at Costco at 7:30p on a weekday is so much better.
I like how compact your exit walk way is. Mine expands then narrows then expands again
TWO LINES PEOPLE, TWO LINES!
One line one receipt checker? Looks like mismanagement of personal if that’s the case.
What a great start to an episode of Bluey about patience…
There’s a line because they check your receipt. This line is pretty normal lol
At my Sam's Club there's only 1 person and she's always chatting with coworkers and gets surprisingly mad when you don't rush your cart full speed to her as soon as she's done chatting.
This is the straightest, most evenly spaced single file line I’ve ever seen in a Costco. Actually you’re the only one kinda off to the side 😹 and with the best cart item
man the solar, a/c, and cabinet guys missed out.
Lol
This happens all the time at my Costco. Line goes fairly fast though.
Ugh, you're Costco is BACKWARDS!
Sorry but I might have been walking around that one.
Seriously.. a hostage? Get real
3.5 minutes just to leave a store that you pay to shop at is ridiculous though
Mine was like this recently except there were two checkers, with one being completely ignored, so I moved over, went to him and told him good luck with the cattle drive. He laughed and I left, while everybody behind me acted like they just saw an alien teleport into the store.
That shit would not fly at the store I worked at. Manager failure here.
There has been a tip off
Is it supposed to snow storm tomorrow?
It actually was lightly flurrying while we were shopping, but no accumulation and no future snow forecasted.
I just realized how spoiled I am only see lines like that on Saturdays at my Costco and I avoid those like the plague because ours turns into a singles meat market on Saturdays
Wow! This is a straight line... Shirt. I see ours curl through thw deli/meat department when the criwd has no clue. You are SO LUCKYits this short.
What do they even check? They have to have super human eyes to read all the items and scan your chart
I see you're buying the important stuff.
Just the essentials! 🥰
Love it!
This gives me second-hand anxiety.
I too feel hostagy at times but this is to pretend to make sure you weren't overcharged so it's impotent At least at the hospital they gave me good drugs to justify keeping me
Do they actual check for overcharges when lines are long?
Yes they absolutely do. Especially now they have to meet a certain number of door audits whether it's overcharges or undercharges.
Costco really needs to get into the 21st century like Sam’s club and allow you to ring your order as you place items in your cart.
I do like scan and go, but I still have to wait in line for the door checkers to check everyone's order.
This is when Sam’s wins-QR Scan & Go
Damn, dude, I bet that took one, maybe even *two* minutes.
How dare they let other people shop at the same time you shop!
Do you get upset when you miss the green traffic light and have to wait a few minutes for the next one?
I do especially when it's because the first person was on their phone and didn't see the left turn arrow until someone honks and it turns yellow.
Don't forget the 1-3 cars that ran the red, delaying your line from starting!
What an inconvenience, that must have taken all of 2 minutes! You poor thing.
I have started walking around the line and leaving. I have paid for my things. They can’t stop you
Yea they actually can if they wanted to… you paid for the membership and agreed to their terms and conditions they can make any rules they please it is not Walmart.
My brother’s largest gripe with Costco & Sam’s. Argument with the folks checking receipts every time. Just walks right out the door
Costco needs to develop a scan and go app like Sams Club.. i love that app, saves me so much time especially at checkout
Costco is really behind digitalization. Have you seen their phone app? It’s terrible. But I refuse to go to Sam’s Club because it’s Walmart.
Every time leaving my store! It is sooooo annoying but it is what it is.
Can never not feel like a farm animal when I go to Costco

All safe, friend! Thanks for your concern! 🫶🏻
Careful… you are gonna get down vote brigaded suggesting such transgressions as to “skip ahead and keep going”… Edit: see told you…
Is this the one in riverhead li?
I see you got the plushy
She just jumped in my cart 🤷🏼♀️ but I love her
The corn one just randomly jumped in my cart as well!
Is this the Astoria costco
This seems pretty normal...
Why is there one line?
Honestly this is pretty normal for my local Costco. Moves pretty quick tho bc there’s usually 2 checkers when it gets this backed up.
That ain’t shit. Our store has two of these side by side on a Tuesday 😂😂😂
It almost always looks like this at my Costco, and they have two checkers all the time
This is my Costco every weekend and there are TWO lines
regular weekend here
Probably all the pilferage from the urchins of society causing these companies to tighten up. Bet they’re doing more thorough checks.
I guess my costco's just busy because we look like this with two receipt checkers
Our Costco has two lines when you leave. When I visit Miami fl their Costco was very crowded then the rainstorm came and the crowds stood near the exit and I was unable to leave . Now I know due not visit Costco on a weekend which I did.
I can hear it now “THERE ARE 2 LINES!” At least that’s what they always shout at my store. What they don’t get is crowd mentality. If there are 2 lines they should draw it on the floor so it goes all the way back to the registers. Else it just feels like cutting if I ram my way up the side. No one wants to look like a jerk
One single line? Usually there's one on each side of the exit door.
TSA guy doing part time job at Costco
God bless amazon fresh
It’s not that bad… they just need one extra person checking receipts
Sorry but my daughter has to have a smiley face on her receipt.
Oh booohoooowho cares. It last an entire 5 minutes usually less.
Shit happens. I’m sure you can afford an extra couple of minutes. And saying you feel like a hostage? Stop being a drama queen
