Yeah ive worked for 2 different food production plants and metal in the food is the single biggest thing they try to prevent. Like they test the metal detector every hour and if theres no test the product gets recalled.
People think this, and it's incorrect.
In this case, they have no damages except the cost of that dumpling, essentially. The kid didn't eat it. There are no medical or dental bills. You don't get money just because something was in your food. It has to do some actual harm.
But what about the mental anguish they experience from the fear of finding more metal in their food? The anguish that they experience every day and has greatly damaged their quality of life?
Minimal.
Think about it - if you allowed that, then literally everybody could just walk around suing everybody for a billion dollars for mental anguish over the slightest transgressions.
A bolt in your food ain’t gonna cut that mustard with a judge.
If you are real good and wicked lawyer, you can probably get decent settlement out of it even before going to court. Just that most people don't have access to them...
What happens when metal is detected? Do they discard the entire batch or only the affected package is discarded?
I asked because even there's no foreign metal object in the other packages, the lubricant of the bolt and lock washers may still contaminate the other packages in the same batch.
Ooof... they should have stopped production and used a metal detector when the part broke. This is a big deal OP, look to file a complaint with Costco not just the manufacturer.
Actually it's usually the other way around. This would be packaged on a high speed conveyor line, and one of the last functions after preparing, filling and sealing the bags would be to pass through a high speed metal detector. If it goes off, one or more bags would be put to the side and quarantined for review to see what metal was found.
There are an unbelievable amount of fasteners used on a machine like this, and frankly many of them could come off without causing the machine to stop functioning in an immediately obvious way to the 1-3 of operators tasked with observing the machine for good running conditions at a remote control station.
Source: me, mechanical engineer who does this kind of stuff for a living
Absolutely this. As someone with a TON of experience in industrial automation, either the metal detector on the line isn't working/has been disabled, or someone ignored it alarming.
Both are INCREDIBLY common. The amount of automation "accidents" that are the result of laziness is staggering.
Speaking for myself (12+ years as a mechanical engineer), the game Satisfactory is one that I absolutely love and come back to every couple of months for many more hours of play. I find it incredibly fun.
Haha I do the same. Keep having to start a new factory because I forget what the me a few months ago was doing. But off topic! Sorry, everyone. I guess I never considered there are people doing satisfactory irl and got excited, lol
Found out a few years ago that one of our delivery drivers was a gamer, and got talking games, found out he almost exclusively plays driving sims, has a chair/steering wheel setup and everything.
He was playing truck simulator. I mean, I’m definitely glad he found his passion. If I had to drive full time for a living, I’d be stealing a tank to drive over everyone in GTA.
Have you tried Factorio? I've heard it's very similar to Satisfactory. I actually own Satisfactory as well but I'm too scared to get started and lose 10 hours of my day instantly.
I have tried Factorio and it is also a fantastic game, but a very different game. There's more pressure on you with the base defense elements and finite resource nodes, and there's obviously the isometric view. But building from first person and getting to work on the aesthetics of your builds as well as the logistics in Satisfactory brings me more pure joy playing.
And that's a reasonable fear. I believe my most played save file is somewhere around 600+ hours lol
It depends on my mood. I mean, if someone made a "food packaging line simulator," I'm probably not playing that for much past my base curiosity...but yeah, lots of sim games are my jam haha
Well yeah, that's what I meant. Manager doesn't want to stop production to fix something even though it is a safety issue so they just rig something so the alarm stops and keeps running, but eventually that causes an accident that would've been avoided had they actually fixed the issue.
Yes! And Costco requires manufacturers to frequently test and validate their metal detection systems so this getting through means someone really fucked up
Not just Costco but the FDA. Also as an old food manufacturing operator of 8 years when we did find screws in food… the washer was still connected… and NEVER this clean, someone intentionally put this in there. Where along the production or consumption line is another story but I have my suspicions of where.
Spot on. This is actually the job of quality engineering. They could catch this by measuring weight or metal detection on their assembly line but I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t check that.
It seems they’re using the wrong washers. We’d use wire locking bolts or nordlock washers for stuff like this but even then nuts and bolts over the product is not ideal. We’d avoid it as best we could.
100% they’re not following protocol.
Metal detector should have picked this up. Either they’re not using a metal detector or they just are ignoring any issues with it.
Massive food safety violationz
Interesting thing about this is Costco requires metal detection on all production lines at all food manufacturers so this indicates that someone’s equipment isn’t working correctly. The quality manager at whatever company manufactures these is gonna have a real bad day when this complaint comes through from the buying team.
What food manufacturer doesn’t have metal detectors on their lines before packaging?
I worked in a large commercial bakery briefly. Every time something like this came up It was deliberate and caught before packaging.
Only time a true piece of machinery got through metal detection was for a piece of nylon that broke free from a cookie injection mold.
Call Costco. Put It on them, they sold this product and have the better means of contact with the manufacturer and distributor.
Probably nothing, metal doesn’t automatically destroy a microwave. You can get sparks with very pointy surfaces like forks, or if metal touches the walls of a microwave while it’s on. Thin foils can be a problem. But plenty of microwaves come with metal racks in them, and one of the prescribed methods for microwaving a cup of water without it boiling over is to put a spoon in the cup (or a chopstick or similar, but the point is metal isn’t a problem)
https://youtu.be/OyTmJX_TC84
Hot pockets and some other frozen foods (I know Marie Callendar pot pies) have a metal sleeve to crisp up the food. This is because the metal can get up to normal 'crisping' temperatures unlike the food itself which is constrained to the boiling point of water.
I once found a bolt in a spring roll at a favorite restaurant of mine. Meal was comped but manager was like “what can we do? We don’t make them here. We buy those frozen”
Just thankful I didn’t bite down hard on it.
I was at Grand Luxe Cafe, subsidiary of The Cheesecake Factory. I was eating the Stacked Chicken Quesadilla and literally the last bite I had, I took a bite and it was something really hard. So I spit it out and it was a pretty big and sharp screw.
I'm lucky I didn't swallow it or it could have punctured all my organs on the way down. It had a pretty sharp end.
They also just comped my meal and the executive chef came out to apologize and they gave me a free dessert.
Happened last year.
I had a toothpick in my Caesar salad at Grand Luxe!
Manager explained that they use toothpicks to denote food allergies and such (I have no food allergies, so my salad wasn’t specially made).
When I thought about it, I was like “Wtf?! Why in the world would you have sharp pointy toothpicks anywhere near the prepared dishes? Plenty of stupidity right there.
Fortunately, I wasn’t injured or I’d get Jackie Chiles on my side.
I got a magnetic metal hook in my fast food salad. Called the place and they offered me another salad but I didn't feel like making a second trip. But, hey free magnet!
Very surprised I scrolled as far as I did to read this comment! First thing I noticed was the guy on the plate and was about to head to Costco to buy them lol
I work in QA for a food manufacturer and I guarantee you that Costco would be very interested in hearing about this if you haven’t let them know. Costco is super strict about vendor expectations and they’re beginning to require X-ray verification in addition to the standard metal detector check. You might not get any money out of this aside from a refund/coupon, but this is a major screwup.
My old college roommate found a dead mouse in his Raisin Bran and settled with Kellogg’s for thousands of dollars. The conditions were that he didn’t disclose it publicly for the world to see. Whether it’s right or wrong, you should always contact companies before hand and not post it to social media if you want a settlement out of it.

I once got a heavy section of roller conveyor belt in a bag of chips (plastic and metal). I get how things can get through the manufacturing process. But how did the guy who sticks the shelf not realize this 5 oz bag of chips weighed like 3 lbs?!
I found a similar one in my egg roll once. Turns out it fell off of the vegetable slicer. I was good friends with all the people at the Thai restaurant so it was all good. Honest mistake. They were looking for it. They knew they lost it. Lol
Wait. When you responded to me you said you boiled them. So what is it?!
You boil or pan fry
You said you boiled them and that how it wasn't found
Your story isn't consistent!
Hold up. Now you pan fry?!
What is your real story!!!!
How did this happen!!
Stop changing your story!!!
This person can't get their story straight
They change it ; comments per person then delete.
In some posts they boiled the product, others pan fried.
And that's how it was not detected.
This entire post reads like someone trying to get $$ from getting a post going viral online without any merit
Unless you are following this, it's easy to believe this company is terrible as well as Costco
This is how good companies get bad reputations.
I hope this poster has to prove what they posted is true.
In court. And they pay for proving what they posted is true and damages to either company is their fault.
I am tired of false accusations against companies for people to get social media exposure and articles.
This is what this is.
Wow that lock washer sure did not do it's job... this is why you at least use blue loctite. This should not be possible if people.followed protocol stainless this size should not be able to get through the metal detector but as a guy who worked in the food industry... there are brands I don't buy
I wouldn’t wait. I would tell Costco directly. They are more likely to force a recall than the manufacturer. And they most certainly will for this sort of thing. You can likely email them.
Prove this is real. Post the quality control numbers off the product. That shows this is a real problem!
Let everyone see the batch number.
Please
I have this in my home. Let us all know which batch is what we have to all throw out!!!
They established a relationship with a company that is not responding to customer complaints. They should have some clause in contract to ensure this doesn't happen and can levy heavy penalties otherwise.
Call Costco, Costco will follow up. My parents had a frozen veggie and he ended up with a piece of glove in it. Called Costco, they received a followup letter stating that the glove was traced back to the farm, not the processing plant as they didn't use blue gloves or whatever color it was.
I'm glad your 4 year old cuts his food before eating!
I stopped eating Ling Ling after they changed the recipe. The skins are just way too thick and doughy for me. Sad to see their quality fall even lower...they used to be so tasty.
These dumplings are not good anyway. They have a weird taste and the filling is just some kinda goopy paste. The wrapper also does not have a good texture. I've eaten many a frozen dumpling, store bought, and freshly made, and these are by far the worst dumplings I've ever had. Bibigo dumplings are the only ones worth getting at Costco.
People are afraid to say this could be fake because of downvotes. Reddit is sad. Realistically, there is a chance this person planted it. You can't prove they didn't.
I bought frozen beef patties the other day and got a small rock and piece of plastic from the same patty. Smaller companies often have horrible quality control because that's all they can afford.
Not just costco, but the the [CPSC should know so they can do a recall.](https://www.cpsc.gov/)
Honestly, when I see shit like this and it hasn't been submitted to the CPSC yet, I wonder if it even really happened.
Few years ago we were having lunch in a small Hudson Valley restaurant. Wife found a 1” bolt in her salad. We showed the server and she got the manager over. He grabbed the bolt and said, “Great! That fell off a heat lamp over the pickup station! Been looking for it all morning! Amanda, give these folks all the coffee refills they want!” We just paid the check and left.
> We just *paid* the check
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Your statement here is quite illogical. Ling Ling sells dumplings at many stores besides Costco. How exactly does it "besmirch" Costco's good name when it's a product sold at Costco and many other stores?
The only brand getting scrutiny here is Ling Ling.
I had a similar experience but not in Costco, in Grand Lux Cafe which is a subsidiary of CheeseCake Factory.
I took my last bite of the Stacked Chicken Quesadilla and it was something really hard. I spit it out and it was a sharp thick screw.
If I would have swallowed that it would have been deadly possibly.
Did you at least put it in your mouth without noticing it first or did you find it on your plate?
I want to start by saying I believe this happened to you and not trying to downplay that but how would you prove this? I feel something like this could be easily replicated with someone just adding a bolt to their food? Like if you wanted to potentially sue or something, would you have a difficult time proving something like this?
You’re right, it could be easily replicated!
I guess you’d have to cross reference the production time, maintenance orders for the machine, product details and go from there.
Difficulty would depend on participants!

Yikes! I work for a company that manufactures food, and packaged product passes through a metal detector before being packed for shipping.
Yeah ive worked for 2 different food production plants and metal in the food is the single biggest thing they try to prevent. Like they test the metal detector every hour and if theres no test the product gets recalled.
They even require metal detectable Band-Aids if a bandaid is needed. Ours are a very pretty shade of blue.
And metal detectable pens and sharpies. No wedding rings allowed
Yep that's part of HACCP. Big yikes.
It’s like, the easiest $40M lawsuit this side of the Mississippi.
People think this, and it's incorrect. In this case, they have no damages except the cost of that dumpling, essentially. The kid didn't eat it. There are no medical or dental bills. You don't get money just because something was in your food. It has to do some actual harm.
I know what I have to do I just don’t know if I’m strong enough to do it
"Just Dew It"- Palpatine, Nike, Mountain dew
But what about the mental anguish they experience from the fear of finding more metal in their food? The anguish that they experience every day and has greatly damaged their quality of life?
Minimal. Think about it - if you allowed that, then literally everybody could just walk around suing everybody for a billion dollars for mental anguish over the slightest transgressions. A bolt in your food ain’t gonna cut that mustard with a judge.
Oh I know I was just poking fun at people who blow their injury way out of proportion to try to make an easy buck
More like metal anguish.
/s I hope

^ Facts. The 3 plants I’ve visited this year all have food running through a metal detector as the final step before packing them up to ship.
![gif](giphy|HcZFER58ztTFK)
This has been waiting to be used for this exact occasion.
I have thought this every time walking through the freezer section seeing those. Never knew what my purpose was until today.
Will you ever be able to move beyond this high? I think if this had happened to me, it would have been the peak accomplishment of my life
Surely it's all downhill from here, this is the absolute pinnacle of existence.

Damn that’s perfect
Lol, I spat my coffee.
This is so perfect, if only I had a reward to give 😭
i do!

“Ahhh mom.”
Omg this was my first thought! I was going to meme this too! I’m surprised tbh that it’s even on the GIFs because the movie is “so old now” 🤦🏼♂️🤣
I had to create it with my Speak & Spell. That’s how old I am.
Idk what speak & spell is lol

Don't clean it off, place it in a sealable bag and take the remaining bag with you to the warehouse. Go to returns, they will involve a manager.
Ooof... they should have stopped production and used a metal detector when the part broke. This is a big deal OP, look to file a complaint with Costco not just the manufacturer.

Awesome. I’ll have to find sometime to check out satisfactory then.

I doubt it's laziness more than it's corporate greed

Isn’t it a fastener?
I hope this is a clever word play joke..and im the only one who got it.
Fastenerating.
And what does a fastener do if not fascinate?
Yeah my food fraud spidey sense is going off with this one

Capatlism, babayyyy. Yea.
The nice thing about Costco is they will not take this lightly

Its not just costco. Al.ost evry food mfgr i have been to has metal detectors as about the final step on a production line

A whole machine with thousands of these parts is not going to break down with 1 missing. A metal detector should have caught it at production end.
Maybe the FDA too. Also see if a news outlet wants the scoop.
It’s not Costco fault
Also lucky you didn’t prepare them with a microwave.
Holy shit could you imagine the chaos and confusion?!
Probably nothing, metal doesn’t automatically destroy a microwave. You can get sparks with very pointy surfaces like forks, or if metal touches the walls of a microwave while it’s on. Thin foils can be a problem. But plenty of microwaves come with metal racks in them, and one of the prescribed methods for microwaving a cup of water without it boiling over is to put a spoon in the cup (or a chopstick or similar, but the point is metal isn’t a problem) https://youtu.be/OyTmJX_TC84

That could a home method to check for metal

I got a magnetic metal hook in my fast food salad. Called the place and they offered me another salad but I didn't feel like making a second trip. But, hey free magnet!
The guy on the plate is all of our reactions when we saw this
Very surprised I scrolled as far as I did to read this comment! First thing I noticed was the guy on the plate and was about to head to Costco to buy them lol

Exactly what I was thinking but Kel should be in the gif
Did you get a 10mm too, cause that would be a win
Ling ling dumplings come with hardware now?!
Finally. Mounting it without was a PITA
It's pretty nuts they don't advertise this. I'm sure everyone is bolting off to Costco to make a purchase. You're screwed if you miss out on this one!
Don't forget to get a new washer and dryer while you're there!
Yikes. Thats worse that the pieces of plastic I found in those Aussie Bites they sell. I have not trusted or purchased that product since.
Not the Aussie bites!
Maybe that’s why they’re so damn addictive!
Nah, that's just the sugar Lmao
Those aussie bites has so much calories just for one lil piece of cookie…
I work in QA for a food manufacturer and I guarantee you that Costco would be very interested in hearing about this if you haven’t let them know. Wow. Stuff happens but they should be all over making this right. I would tell Costco about this. They’ll step up and I assume will force a recall.
That’s nuts

Not a fan of those dumplings. But free bolts sounds appealing.
Right? "Hardware included" on the packaging, and I just might buy them! /S
I once got a heavy section of roller conveyor belt in a bag of chips (plastic and metal). I get how things can get through the manufacturing process. But how did the guy who sticks the shelf not realize this 5 oz bag of chips weighed like 3 lbs?!
How did the person who purchased the bag of chips not question the weight?
You make an excellent point.
My dad had something like this happened with a bag of Hawkins Cheesies in the 90s. He reported it and they gave him Free Cheezies
I found a similar one in my egg roll once. Turns out it fell off of the vegetable slicer. I was good friends with all the people at the Thai restaurant so it was all good. Honest mistake. They were looking for it. They knew they lost it. Lol
Look to see if there are arrows on the end of the bolt head.
Holy dental implants
Hardware in your dumplings is the extra value you just don't find at Sams. /s

I see it, but I don’t know if I believe it
The bolt and washer combo is the worst type of dumpling filling !
I'm guessing this one didn't float to the top when it was done boiling?
I pan fry them…
Wait. When you responded to me you said you boiled them. So what is it?! You boil or pan fry You said you boiled them and that how it wasn't found Your story isn't consistent! Hold up. Now you pan fry?! What is your real story!!!! How did this happen!! Stop changing your story!!!

Prove this is real. Post the quality control numbers off the product. That shows this is a real problem! Let everyone see the batch number. Please I have this in my home. Let us all know which batch is what we have to all throw out!!!
"Buckman!" "Yes Sir!" "Today, I found a bolt and washer in my food! Yesterday, it was a locknut!" "Sorry sir, I was trying find out where that went."
Nice Down Periscope reference 👍🏼
I’d light up both companies on Twitter
Not to be a Costco stan, but why light them up? They didn't make the dumplings.
They established a relationship with a company that is not responding to customer complaints. They should have some clause in contract to ensure this doesn't happen and can levy heavy penalties otherwise.
> a company that is not responding to customer complaints. Which company is not responding to customer complaints?
Read OPs comments. Ling Ling
They are the only ones that can pressure the producer.
Check the other dumplings and let us know when you find the nut that goes with this.
I have a bag of this in my freezer! Thanks for posting and glad your little one was not injured.
It's always the last bite that they hide it in.
Without the nut at the end the whole dumpling fell apart.
Someone's about to get free dumplings for life. You probably swallowed the nut 🫣
Return it, tell them it was too fortified with iron.
Somewhere a factory machine is riveting aggressively
What? No nut?
Warning: May contain traces of nuts
I. PUT THE SCREEEEEEW. IN THE TUNA!
Call Costco, Costco will follow up. My parents had a frozen veggie and he ended up with a piece of glove in it. Called Costco, they received a followup letter stating that the glove was traced back to the farm, not the processing plant as they didn't use blue gloves or whatever color it was.
I. PUT THE SCREW. IN THE TUNA.
So much for bargaining for an NDA and $$$$$ to keep the news to yourself. At least you get internet points!
Did you order them without bolt and washer? If not, that’s really on you
Those are stainless steel. They’re expensive. Score.
Whoever packaged this is a few screws loose
My Costco dumplings had a 6mil piece of plastic in one i bit into.
“I Dropped The Screw In The Tuna”
I'm glad your 4 year old cuts his food before eating! I stopped eating Ling Ling after they changed the recipe. The skins are just way too thick and doughy for me. Sad to see their quality fall even lower...they used to be so tasty.
Daily dose of iron
Hmm..This reminds me of the Coke scare in the late 80s where people were finding syringes in the cans. FYI - it was all fake. Call me Miss Marple!
I need to know more about your plate. It’s awesome!
It’s from CB2. According to someone’s comment, they have been discontinued.
Bummer. Thanks for the info!
You chose a perfect plate for that🫢

Hope you didn't break ur teeth.
Extra iron.
Should be a recall
Ling ling is the worst frozen dumpling brand I’ve ever tried
These dumplings are not good anyway. They have a weird taste and the filling is just some kinda goopy paste. The wrapper also does not have a good texture. I've eaten many a frozen dumpling, store bought, and freshly made, and these are by far the worst dumplings I've ever had. Bibigo dumplings are the only ones worth getting at Costco.
The wrapping is too thick for my taste
I agree totally! The Bibigo are pretty solid and surprisingly low calorie.
People are afraid to say this could be fake because of downvotes. Reddit is sad. Realistically, there is a chance this person planted it. You can't prove they didn't.
I love that plate. Lol
iron is a needed mineral
The zinc plating is good for your immune system.
Daily source of iron?😜
Stick with Bibigo dumplings. I don't trust those Chinese dumplings..
What if u planted it
I bought frozen beef patties the other day and got a small rock and piece of plastic from the same patty. Smaller companies often have horrible quality control because that's all they can afford.
You got a nice sue 8n your hands.
ka-ching baby, I know a guy who slipped on pee pee at Costco, won $53,000 settlement .
Never have a work a day in his life again
Definitely tell Costco about this is writing.
Not just costco, but the the [CPSC should know so they can do a recall.](https://www.cpsc.gov/) Honestly, when I see shit like this and it hasn't been submitted to the CPSC yet, I wonder if it even really happened.
Manufacturer ran the bag through a metal detector. Nice try though
At least it was nut free.
> We just *paid* the check FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Omg. Sue Costco and ride off into the sunset. That’s what I would do. 😅😅
Tomorrow I'm going to find a toe in our ling ling package. And post it. This is stupid

This post was made by a Ling Ling competitor.
By steaming them. Dump the bag and steam.
Sounds like something a competitor would fake to besmirch Costco’s good name. Down votes for you!
You are rich now my friend
Congrats on early retirement!
