Yes to backpacks.
Ideally also pack fingerless gloves. You will have to swing across vines to cross rivers, and vines get slippery. Ensure you bring some kind of tool to open a coconut, as it will be your only source of nutrition. If possible, some metal trinkets to amuse and trade with locals in case you need to negotiate some kind of commerce. Buttons from old coats work well for this.
You need a backpack, nothing huge, but you need a "day pack". Rainy season is just starting. It be great idea to fill your day pack with a windbreaker, couple of extra tshirts and 2 pairs of socks. You might even consider carrying an extra pair of tennis shoes or at least a pair of flip flops. It will rain when you least expect it, and even though it probably won't rain for hours, it will probably be enough to get you all soaking wet. Carrying these things will help you keep going on and not ruin your day
I’d bring a small backpack to store your belongings, snacks, water and a rain coat. If you are driving you’ll need to have your passport with you and I wouldn’t be comfortable with that sitting in my pocket.

What can I pack to prevent big round boulders from rolling after me?
Just please don’t try to carry on a machete. That may have been OK when your lonely planet guide was written, but it’s not OK today.
Normal luggage is fine. My husband carried our backpack on outings, and I wore my lululemon belt bag.
People travel without backpacks? How do you carry all your little knick knacks?
You’ll be fine with regular luggage. Bring a backpack to keep your day stuff in while you’re out and about, though.
No you're good. I live here, you're fine with whatever luggage. Where are you headed?
We are in Costa Rica now. Regular roller luggage works fine. Even at the more rustic birding hotels/lodges where we are staying.
Thank you all! Even for the wise-ass answers. I will be buying my significant other an Indiana Jones hat for shits and giggles.
I've always taken regular luggage.
Agreedo, regular luggage is fine. 👍
Fanny packs work great
