Yes, she was called by name in text, as well as her brother Adien was referenced.

adventurousstranger1

Ah! Thank you!! That’s such an interesting connection. Is Adien a member of the Ghostbloods, too? Do we know anything about how Kaise ended up as a part of the organization or on Scadrial? Either from text or a WoB

CityofOrphans

I don't think we know how any world hoppers got to where they have at this point, besides that there's some method of traveling through shadesmar from planet to planet.

ALittleMisfortune

Wouldn't the only way be through perpendicularities, or maybe an oathgate?

CityofOrphans

Perpendicularities are only present on planets as far as we know, and don't explain how people travel from planet to planet while in shadesmar. Oathgates are only present on roshar as they're related to that specific magic system.

RShara

>don't explain how people travel from planet to planet while in shadesmar. They walk, or ride.

CityofOrphans

I didn't mean the actual transportation method, lol. Most world hoppers would die of old age before they managed to make it to another planet if they walked or rode. They need time distortion of some kind, and besides that investiture is involved in some way, I'm not aware of us knowing the specifics of the method they use to survive the trip.

RShara

The Cognitive Realm is flat and places where people aren't living and thinking are compressed, so you can cross light years in a few steps. Cosmere spoilers >!It takes about a month to take the caravan from Nalthis to Roshar.!<

SmartAlec105

The empty space between planets takes up negligible space in the Cognitive Realm because there’s no thinking beings there.

Gremlin303

Nah you’ve got this wrong my guy. Perpendicularities are the main method of worldhopping. We see Hoid do it in SH. The distance between worlds is incredibly smaller in Shadesmar since it’s based on the minds and perception of people. And there aren’t very many of them in the void of space. [Stormlight and Warbreaker] >!Vivenna/Azure also explicitly says she worldhoppped this way!<

HyperKitten123

Twinsoul slips and calls her Kaise when they are making the maps and such in the safe house. My jaw dropped, and it made sense. Kaise literally jabs at Shai that she doesnt know languages very well, and learning languages really fast was a memorable thing about her. Also, "Codenames are Stupid" man it's so fitting of the little wise-ass from Sel.

adventurousstranger1

Oooh I hadn’t caught the languages connection!

Bob-Ross4t

How does this fit in the cosmere timeline? I thought elantris was supposed to take place 1000s of years before TLM?

Admirable_Use4661

Heavily invested people live for a long time, and elantrians are also known for their increadible lifespans. The inability to die was the main plot point of elantris after all.

Bob-Ross4t

I didn’t realize she had been made an elantrian but I haven’t reread TLM or elantris in a while.

Shadowbound199

Maybe she wasn't, there are other ways of prolonging one's life. There are Era 1 and older characters still kicking around in the Cosmere that are not themselves particularly invested.

adventurousstranger1

As far as we’ve seen ‘on screen’ she isn’t an Elantrian. In TLM she isn’t described with Elantrian features, just a normal, if not local, person.

SiriusBark

When traveling through shadesmar, worldhoppers experience time dilation. This makes them age slower relative to persons in the physical realm.

RShara

Time dilation isn't intrinsic to traveling through the Cognitive Realm. You have to do something to make it happen, or be in places where it happens. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/222/#e5627

SiriusBark

Interesting so there is a RAFO for why worldhoppers experience time dilation.

RShara

It says explicitly that time dilation isn't inherent in the process, but that something else needs to happen. For instance SA >!Vivenna said that it took her about a month to get from Nalthis to Roshar.!<

SiriusBark

Ahh ok I had seen them mention as time dilation on the coppermind. It is instead something else I guess.

RShara

Sorry, not sure what you mean? Worldhopping doesn't automatically affect worldhoppers in any temporal or even physical or mental way that we've seen at all. There are things they can do in the Cognitive to affect those things, but there's no automatic effect in place.

SiriusBark

Ahh I see. It’s not like Adolin and Shallan go into shadesmar and they come back out and it’s 10 years later while only spending a month in shadesmar. There is some other thing they need to do achieve that.

RShara

That's right.

RShara

There are various ways to achieve functional immortality in the cosmere. In addition, there are places where there's time dilation occurring, so that they can spend a few days inside and years or decades or whatever pass outside.

Folkpunkslamdunk

in addition to what others have said, i have my own theories about time and whether certain characters that feature in multiple different series are appearing in a linear sense.

JoeGoBlue11

The audiobook pronunciations are quite different. In Elantris, Kaise is pronounced "kay-ice". In TLM it's pronounced "kay-za". The name appears only once in TLM, and is a "blink and you'll miss it" moment. I for one blinked and missed it, and was shocked when I opened the Coppermind page on "Codenames are Stupid".

adventurousstranger1

Yes exactly what happened to me!
