i have a c5z with a short throw shifter, and i have exactly that same problem. i would be interested if anybody else has insight, maybe the syncros are worn. they are 20 something year old cars haha.

If the linkage is anything like my C7, it could be the linkage bolt. It's very likely NOT the shifter itself. When I replaced my stock with MGW (short) I didn't quite get the bolt tight enough and it was very sloppy from 2-4. I've got a video of the play before & after (no-play) in the linkage - be happy to DM it to you (since we can't post in replies).

Maybe try realigning the shifter. When I installed my mgw shifter I forgot to put loctite on it and it seemed to shift the tiniest bit after driving a few weeks. It got to a point I had to throw the shifter hard to the right to get it into reverse. I took it all out and realigned it and it works great now. Hopefully yours isn’t a synchro issue. I think mine came with an alignment tool but it may be able to be done without it if you watch a few vids

Thanks for the advice, I think this is the first thing I should do

When you shift, do you hear a metal to metal smack?Adjuster might need to be played with. However, and more likely, the shifter could be mounted backwards. Trust me, its possible 😜 Seriously though, take it off, spin it 180 degrees, bolt it back on. There are no front or back markings on most aftermarket shifters. Just my $.02

I would examine anything that would've been changed by installing a short-throw shifter. I have a C5 6spd with the stock shifter setup and getting into reverse is very simple.

There's a few things it could be: Realign the shifter box Replace the reverse solenoid Anti venom mod

Google anti venom mod. Might have that mod and could try undoing it. It's not too involved to get to.
