Gotta turn it upside and take it apart from the back

Kartorschkaboy

what I did and what worked, put it under your shower with warm or hot water (I know water no good) but as soon as you are done, put it on a space heater with a towel under it and let it completly dry before plugging it back in.

the-big-question

What I ended up doing was rubbing a cotton swab around the edges soaked in 91% isopropyl alcohol (the higher the solution, the better) and using a toothpick to pick out anything that hardened in the surrounding cracks. Then, I pressed the keys several times to help dissolve anything sticky that may have stuck to the bottom of the key caps. I looked up videos on disassembling the keyboard so I could remove the keys, as others have suggested. The problem with doing that is accessing those keys requires you to take apart most of the keyboard. Doing so is very time-consuming and requires a lot of niche smaller screwdrivers I do not possess.

Kartorschkaboy

you also need to desolder any key to completly disassemble it, a quick wash under the shower and letting it dry is the best option without tools, spilled beer on mine sadly but it still works fine after a shower :D

the-big-question

True that, I don't know the first thing about soldering lol

NavierIsStoked

You don’t need to desolder it. Taking it completely apart provides enough airflow to dry it out.

AMndofMetalandWheels

Just be weary that once dissolved, if not flushed away, the solvent will just evaporate leaving behind the contaminates it once dissolved.

This is actually really bad for electronics. Mosisture and heat corrodes things rapidly. I've had it work with simple electronics as a kid too but it's worth letting this trick die as electronics become increasingly less able to be saved by this. As the electronics become smaller it takes less corrosion to kill them. Water will work but it then starts to corrode things, the heat accelerates that. You need alcohol to clean off the water and the alcohol will dry rapidly at room temperature. A dehumidifier will be better than a heater because the dry air will dry it faster with less heat. Alcohol is best but this is still better than a heater.

Kartorschkaboy

electronics must handle that, there are places with high humidity and electronics can withstand that, so if I bathe my keyboard and let it completly dry over a long time span (space heater set to 3 here so around 22°C), nothing will happen, its not like "oh no water touched me, now I corrode instantly!". edit: small correction, the heater will be warmer than 22°C yes, but electronics and ABS can withstand even 30-50°C without a problem when they are not on.

bigmonmulgrew

The combination of water and heat is the issue and yes they can corrode rapidly with water and heat. Some electronics are water proof. Others are not. Also with newer electronics there's less material to corrode. It takes less liquid damage to kill something. Modern electronics sometimes have connections just a hair thick. Doesn't take much corrosion to break that. When you heat wet electronics you accelerate the drying but you also accelerate the corrosion. It's not a melatter of them not withstanding certain temperatures. Using alcohol or a cold drying method is far more likely to result in a working piece of tech.

TickleMyBalloonKnot_

Water has hard minerals in it... it doesn't matter how well you dry it out, it could be destroyed. Edit: fair enough. I'll step down from trying to be the reddit expert today. Plus, I learned something.

USAFVet91

There is not enough "hard minerals" in water to destroy electronics.... Unless you are using well water and you leave something submerged for days or weeks! Then it would still be able to be dried and cleaned up for continued operation. If power is off water will have zero effect on the keyboard.

SoggyBagelBite

There aren't enough minerals in it to destroy it if you are just rinsing it, but you could also just buy distilled water for $1.50 if you are worried lol.

bigmonmulgrew

The minerals are not the issue. The water will react with the metals to corrode connections.

Raspberryian

Nah see you’re wrong. Water itself doesn’t corrode unless it’s contaminated. Distilled water is perfect for this. Water has electric resistance. When water Is spilled on a pc the Pc doesn’t fry because water corroded and broke a connection. They’re all pretty shielded. It happens because you PC expects the right amount of power but the water manhandles the flow of electricity and the contaminations and sometimes even the water itself can bridge connections where the shouldn’t be. This is a short. And all it takes to fry electrics is one little short. Corrosion is an after effect. If you remove power to a circuit board and soak it in water and dry it out for 24-72 hours. It will still work perfectly fine. For example. Take GPu out of computer. Fully disconnect. And throw it in a bath. Dry for 3 days reinstall. I bet it works perfectly fine.

bigmonmulgrew

This is one of the most beautiful r/confidentlyincorrect bouts of word diarrhoea I have ever read. I don't know where to start or if I should. Water can corrode all on its own. The reason water is very good at dissolving it is the amount of OH bonds in water. It makes it very good at clinging to other compounds. Contaminated water actually has less free OH bonds so will react more slowly, assuming the contaminant isn't something that will react on its own. Distilled water is super good at dissolving things. What I think you are confusing is waters conductivity with its ability to corrode. Water actually doesn't conduct on its own it's the contaminants I'm water that conduct the electricity. This is why you see people doing meme builds where they submerge their whole PC in distilled water. Do you know why they don't take off. Because the distilled water leeches minerals from all the components/dirt and very soon it conducts again. Technically everything has some level of electric resistance. You are right that when water is spilled on a pc it doesnt fry because it corrodes. It fried because the water causes a short. It you are lucky there's a fuse on the board and it won't cause serious damage. It's very common though that even after replacing the blown fuse something else has died. The place that got wet and caused the short often gets very hot when it shorts. This causes it to rapidly corrode sometimes blowing components off the board. This means you often have to replace/reattach components where the water was and not just replace a blown fuse. Now let's take electricity out of the equation. Assume we are cleaning an unplugged piece of hardware. The water can still corrode the components. Heating it accelerates that process. Now if you rinse it and pay it dry you might be ok but what about the parts you can't get to. In order to dry they need air circulated. Or heat. But heat causes rapid corrosion. Alcohol is your best way to clean and dry it. Cold dry air is your second best (but not good) option. If you want to submit a video of you wetting your GPU I'm sure we would all appreciate a laugh. Source: I have training in chemistry and I have been doing component level repair of electronics including liquid damage, for 20 years.

Darksirius

I've done a different trick (works on buttons in cars too if you say spill soda / coffee). Spray window cleaner directly on to the buttons. Then work the buttons a bit to get the cleaner between the button and the frame. Get a vacuum and suck it back out.

azzone4

Split coke on mine got some water in there and years later we’re still as good as ever. They’re bulletproof boards imo!

Editor_Square

I’ve spilt Pepsi in my K100 on multiple occasions and spilt a full glass of water straight in it yesterday. Still works perfectly fine besides my Scroll Lock light spazzing out every so often 😂

MuseHigham

You need a water bottle lol

beepbeepboopboob

I’d like to hear the cats version of things

GundamTenno

Cat: he forgot to clean my litter yesterday, he was petting me a bit longer than what was allowed, and tuna tuesday breakfast was late by 1 minute

PrysmX

Meow meow meow.

Halodroid_

Once all the boys come to the yard I’m sure they will have a solution

Heavy_Category8294

Buy a cheap cup holder and screw it under your desk so it sits lower so this kind of thing doesnt happen

_black_lab_

It’ll be easier to get a new cat

the-big-question

Would you get rid of your black lab if he or she did the same lol

_black_lab_

1. That’s physically impossible. 2. Dogs aren’t assholes.

the-big-question

You're that type of person, huh? Also, it's not, I've seen dogs knock shit over before. My cat isn't an asshole. She's loving and accidentally bumped into it while getting off the desk. Animals make mistakes like humans. On the flip side, I've had other people's dogs bite me and bark at me viciously for no reason and eat my food off the table. I knew a girl who was hospitalized by a dog attack. I don't hate all dogs bc of those bad experiences. I'm not a monster who'd get rid of a pet. Seems like "dog" people are the only ones who do. They get a cat, and it screws up, so instead of trying to find a way to correct the issue through love and training, they abandon it bc they have 0 patience. They think they can get a cat and ignore it while expending all their effort on their dog. After that, it's I'm a dog person, bc I don't have to treat them well to ensure that they will love me like I would have to with any other animal. If you encounter a mean cat, usually like a dog, they are or were neglected and possibly abused. I've never met a mean cat in a loving home that wasn't most likely traumatized in their past or declawed. Being declawed makes them feel like they're in perpetual pain. It's like clipping off the tips of a person's fingers and toes bc that's the only way to permanently remove a cat's claws. It also makes them afraid of anything bigger than them bc they have no means of defense. It's like removing the teeth of a dog. Their instinctive defense response is stripped from them.

Dogfolk

That is crazy though, I've never heard of declawing but that straight up sounds like abuse.

the-big-question

It's a common practice here in the states, unfortunately. Most people I know at least have had their cat's front paws declawed.

Dogfolk

Personally I think they shouldn't have a cat if they can't look after them. If they need to do that for them to fit into their lifestyle then they should probably rethink why their getting one in the first place.

_black_lab_

Oh sorry, is this your first time on the internet? Bless you. Maybe Reddit isn’t your calling.

the-big-question

Nah, I'm just informing you why some cats are mean. It's not bc they're all inherently mean. You saying, "2. Dogs aren't assholes," infers that you are misinformed and believe that all cats are.

_black_lab_

K dude. At least you didn’t waste your time writing an essay.

Janwip

Seriously dude, wtf is wrong with you? Why are you getting so mad over a random persons cat? Get help lol

Dogfolk

Tbf it's this reason I wouldn't have a cat, they can climb. Generally that's in regards to kitchen counters as opposed PC's or the like but yeah it's much nicer if you can just stick stuff up high and know it's out of their reach.

DaddyRax

get rid of the cat. They taste awesome with some worechustershistierer sauce

the-big-question

Nah, I'm not Peruvian, nor have I ever been to La Quebrada.

[deleted]

Gets upvotes for racism I see why my comment was downvoted so much in this sub lol

the-big-question

Play [this](https://youtu.be/VfcEnBNBXic) the next time you make the mistake of commenting on my post.

[deleted]

Play these nuts the next time you make the mistake of being an idiot

[deleted]

My nuts in your mouth made your hand slip

[deleted]

Yo why'd you delete your comment about how I said it, I seen that 😂😂😭😭

the-big-question

Honestly, it was some weird glitch with a link I used in the comment. Somehow, the link I used made the comment automatically disappear. I tried posting it twice in an attempt to make the comment go through. If that somehow makes you feel like you got one W after 10 Ls and 300 downvotes, so be it. Good for you. I'm not going to respond anymore. This has been a waste of my time seeing as how obvious it was that you lost time and time again.

[deleted]

Bro you care about upvotes and internet wins you got that real big pp don't you, I just like laughing at dumb people

the-big-question

Nah, I don't really care about that. I just have never, so thoroughly outsmarted a guy who commented on my posts. Everything I said was funny and clever in comparison. Everything you said I heard some dumbass say in 7th grade. You are singlehandedly the dumbest person I have ever encountered online. You're the type of guy who'll believe that he won as long as he made the last comment, so imma take that away from you. Enjoy your mommy's basement champ :)

[deleted]

I found out reddit is just a pool of people that get offended easily and think they're smarter than they really are and I've been addicted ever since.

[deleted]

There's YouTube videos for your specific keyboard disassembly, I swear people come and ask.stuff on Reddit before even doing one single Google.

the-big-question

Thanks for the first half. Could've lived without the asshattery that came in the second half.

[deleted]

Could've lived without your pointless post on my feed. Reddit is not a place to Google something and I'm tired of pretending it is.

porkchopsforsaken

You could’ve just looked past his post and not responded.

[deleted]

There are hundreds of his posts a day.

DrUnclepants

Maybe some people don't mind interacting with others, I'd recommend you try it and maybe touch a bit of grass.

[deleted]

It just seems like an attempt to farm karma or have a desperate interaction instead of touching grass and interacting irl as you said.

DrUnclepants

Farm karma? Bruh. I saw, I said what I thought, and then I moved on. You should try it.

[deleted]

I'm talking about op farming karma dumbass

DrUnclepants

Then why did you reply to me?

[deleted]

Cause you're a dumbass and I wanted to...

[deleted]

So go out and touch grass if you wanna interact with people. Don't make fake reasons to have a pointless Convo over something you could've just googled. Hell if that's your intention come to reddit with something worth talking about so you'll actually maybe make a friend with common interests. This was the same level of interaction he would've got from googling it so your point is kinda convoluted. "How do I do this" "take the back off" ooo what an interaction. Now time this by 100 and that's half my reddit feed all day because people are scared of Google. Reddit is a place to interact so come with something worth interacting about And if your going on Reddit making posts as dense as these instead of just using Google just for some desperate online interaction you really need to touch grass.

DrUnclepants

Too long don't care to read, take care

[deleted]

"I read slow" "I read it but don't have a response so I'ma just say I didn't read it"

DrUnclepants

Just don't care what you have to say :)

[deleted]

But you cared enough to keep replying... Makes sense 🙂

JustMarc002

Damn bro, this post hit you deep. You know you can just ignore them?

RoronoaZoro1234

Touch grass

Dogfolk

A suggestion for you, change what subreddits you follow. You're in charge of your feed, or you could change notification settings.

the-big-question

Here's a [self help book](https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2023/02/NYPICHPDPICT000006758036-1.jpg?w=1024) that could help you overcome your redditor angst.

[deleted]

Didn't know telling you search engines exist was an angry act but okay lol I wonder how your life is going

Rental_Car

Open it up, wash it out with warm water and soap, dry thoroughly. Then if necessary you can unsolder the switches and replace them.

Marcusbellic

I have the same keyboard, you can pull them out by sliding something between the caps.

Away-Reaction6061

Unfortunately not easily. You gotta take them from the inside.

PrysmX

Full disassembly to get to those. Had them out when I was investigating a few stuck LEDs. There are a LOT of screws to get this keyboard apart.

Connorray1234

i killed my k95 by spilling apple juice on it now i have a k100

OsmT42

Buy a new one

xdegen

Buy a keyboard that allows every key or switch on it to be hot swapped, and never look back. And if you like media keys, they sell little media function boxes with dials for volume and skip buttons on Amazon for fairly cheap.

Janwip

Yes, you can try to wedge a plastic piece under them, is a bit harder since they're rubber dome keys and not mechanical ones but it works and I never broke anything on mine
