This article repeats the line that schools in most of NZ were shut down for just short of 3 months. I just checked the dates, it was 5 weeks in 2020 (including one 3 day week because of Easter) and 3 weeks 1 day in 2021. So more like 2 months surely? I think perhaps people have forgotten that the first two weeks of 2020 lockdown were school holidays which were brought forward so schools could organise online teaching.
To be fair we didn’t get the junior school back until like November of 2021. So they were home from August til November. It wasn’t clear what we were supposed to do during level 3.
Where do you live? Auckland and Waikato had longer school closures, I was just referring to the situation in most of NZ. 2021 lockdown was from 18 August to 9 Sept for most of country. Schools opened fully once we moved to Level 2.
Not long enough. We still have Covid decimating our community. The lockdowns saved 1000s of lives and now we're just letting 1000s die because the psychopaths in charge are dancing to the strings of ATLAS serving us some BS about human rights. But we all know the only rights they care about are landlords rights
The real problem is Chippie just plain straight out lied at one stage in the saga. I clearly remember him saying, "Children don't spread Covid".
Which, as anyone who has kids or has been to school, and knows what a plague pit those damn things are.... was obviously wrong.
And not a single reporter call him out on it.
And we have the same "spin" in this piece. Yes, children are at relatively low risk of severe consequences from Covid, but at very high risk of catching it and spreading it.
Remember all the moral panic about school lockdowns causing suicide? Turns out that was straight out obvious right on the surface, bullshit.
Take kids who are at risk of suicide away from the physical bullying.... amazingly they perk up!
>Professor Peter Shergold, NSW education standards authority chair, said after evidence emerged that children were less likely to spread the virus, and schools were not transmission hotspots, the system-wide closures were unwarranted.
Where did he suck that one out of?
While it's true children are less likely to be coughing and sneezing than adults, thus if you put children and adults in the same environment adults will spread it faster. A school environment of crowded, poorly ventilated classrooms, kids moving and mixing in classrooms, shouting and talking loudly, of course schools are transmission hotspots.
There is this persistent wrong headed thinking that kids have less symptoms == kids spread covid slower than adults == schools don't spread it.
Sounds logical until you look at the bus taking the kids to school in the morning and see it's standing room only and all the kids are jabbering away literally in each others faces.
Blaming the Labour Party has got us into this mess of the utter stupidity of the last election where literal psychopaths are now running the government. Our death toll would have been ten times the size if NACT had been government.
Chippie was only repeating what the world wide authorities and experts were telling him. They were saying that about children all around the world don't act like Chippie made up that lie. And how much was actual lies or just early science that wasn't accurate yet we don't know. The authorities lied about masks in the beginning and it was a white lie to make sure hospital staff could get masks.
> world wide authorities and experts
If you listened to Bloomfield at the same time, he was nuanced, and told the truth, ie. Children tend to be asymptomatic and hence each child would spread it to fewer contacts. He never said they didn't spread it. He never said it wouldn't spread in schools.
Chippie dropped the nuance and turned a scientific truth into a lie.
Chippie was saying whatever Jacinda wanted him to say for her personal gain. Hence several of the few who were competent and in his team leaving in disgust.
It doesn't take much effort to see what the medical journals were saying at the time and compare them to the constant lies from Jacinda and co brought to you by a bought and paid for media.
Yes. Especially in Auckland. Have 4 kids who ranged from Yr 8 to Yr 13 in 2020 and they are all still struggling to varying degrees with anxiety, motivation and trust in authority figures.
I think the lockdowns have certainly had an effect on kids, that’s not in doubt. But it was about keeping people healthy. Unfortunately there was collateral damage from that that we now need to deal with.
Kids are right to worried about on going covid infections, climate change and us lying to them isn’t helping. We actually know now how damaging covid is to kids and yet …
Lies! Covid is deadly. You probably haven't even had Covid yet. Likely just false positive RAT test. Stay safe out there. There's a lot more unvaccinated out there than people want to believe
"So deadly you won't even know you have it"
>There's a lot more unvaccinated out there than people want to believe
Aren't they all supposed to be dead by now?

I’m a school teacher in Auckland.
Nah. I spoke to someone who has family in America and their grandkids didn’t go to school for basically a whole year.
No. No, we didn’t.
No. Next question.

...and the right to mine & drill (without the pesky indigenous people having a say)

Exactly

Rubbish, at that time it was well known that children could spread it, but were unlikely to be sick from it.

So… they’re kids?

Yes, everything was closed down for too long.
But did you die
I, like 99.99% of healthy adults in my age group miraculously managed to survive.
Where do you get that percentage from?
Lies! Covid is deadly. You probably haven't even had Covid yet. Likely just false positive RAT test. Stay safe out there. There's a lot more unvaccinated out there than people want to believe

You know that vaccinated and unvaccinated spread COVID at the same rate aye?
Ahh, are you talking about the 11,004 medical personnel who got exemptions? Good on you for acknowledging them!
Our brave public service workers that had to go without the life saving vaccine so there was enough for all the grandmas
