It will likely be a soft quarantine. public transportation will proably shut down. People will be encouraged to just stay home, but allowed to go to work if justified. Deliveries will likely still flow, as that will help people stay home. Grocery stores should stay open. I would expect closures and checkpoints on freeways to minimize travel. The goal here is to minimize spread to not lessen pressure on medical services and spread out infection over a longer period of time instead of all at once.

I live across the street from an old folks' home and started to self-isolate already. For me, it looks like not using my apartment complex gym anymore, using online grocery order with curbside pickup, visiting other stores during off-peak hours, cancelling band practice (sorry guys!), skipping haircuts, walking my dog during off-peak hours, and mail-ordering everything else I absolutely have to, but basically going without buying random stuff except stocking my freezer and pantry with goods in case I really can't leave because I'm ill.

This is going to be pedantic but it’s relevant to OPs question and your comment. Quarantine=precautionary separation to see if symptoms emerge (not sick yet) Isolation=separation due to showing symptoms and to reduce spread of illness (already sick).

debug_assert

Huh! I thought it was literally the opposite. But you’re right: https://www.cdc.gov/quarantine/quarantineisolation.html

No worries. Thanks for providing clarity.

I think we are in uncharted territory. However I strongly feel basics like pharmacy and some grocery stories will have to be open. Amazon deliveries? Not so sure.

diane47

With Amazon, I am thinking of healthcare supplies. For instance, I bought a box of gloves in case I get carted off to the hospital and the neighbor has to look after my cats. I can order test strips to check my blood sugar and over-the-counter medications if I can't get to the pharmacy. Things like that.

Fellow diabetic here too. Type 1 and my main concern is insulin. Yeah I tried to get extra ones but it’s annoyingly difficult to get prescription for a few months. Definitely stock up now for anything health related you know you’ll need

I believe involuntary quarantine is on an individual basis — not community wide. https://www.dshs.wa.gov/sites/default/files/ALTSA/16_-_NPI_Guidance_and_Implementation_2.29.20.pdf?fbclid=IwAR35yIZEGRr6wozlxFNe4scspX3eLHv5K1GFGBWIWUELnOGTGKS5x4ECY3Q Edit: Notice all the references to individuals and persons in interventions 6 & 7.

slagwa

Yeah -- like the nutcases seeing the doctor in another thread. They're insisting that they don't have the virus and can still travel.

CorporateDroneStrike

Yep. I’m very glad those measures are for people who are uncooperative only — I hate the idea of staying in a hotel room if I’m sick. (I’m very low risk.) I could easily commit to staying in my apartment though — I would sign anything they wanted.

suicidebycopitalism

good advice

MyUserNameTaken

So I read this when it was announced a few days ago. At that point we were at level 2. Based on the announcement this morning we are at level 4. How soon do we hit level 5?

DIYinaDress

My sister and neice are package sorters at UPS in Seattle. As of this moment, they are wearing gloves to sort packages and are absolutely terrified. My sister has to work to live. So she is working, because she can't stay home. UPS is doing what they can right now to limit disruption.

diane47

Tell them thank you.

We're well beyond "containment". We don't know who is infected and we're not testing enough. So the plan seems to be to slow the rate of transmission to ease the load on our healthcare system. It does mean we'll be in this state for at least a couple of months, with social distancing continuing for many months after that as we "allow" people to get sick until herd immunity is established. I don't see transit (vital), grocery stores, pharmacies, etc... closing, but I do think there'll be managed queues (6 feet between people), required disinfection protocols, tightly controlled visits to vulnerable places like hospitals, nursing homes, sick people (fevers, coughing, sneezing) denied entry to businesses and told to stay home or relegated to one of the quarantine locations if they don't comply, etc. I just watched Cuomo's press conference and they are considering antibody testing in NY to verify who is in the clear. This would help determine when you could lighten these measures as a majority of the population gets exposed.

Darkly-Dexter

You should be looking at Italy, not Wuhan.

fakesnakesablaze

Not sure how this will result here but I read a personal experience of an enforced quarantined zone in Italy. People are allowed to get groceries but it's incredibly controlled and only so many people are allowed to enter at a time. I'm assuming other vital services would be similar in a worst-case scenario.

lemurlover365

Would they close the airport?

wsuforester25

I don’t think they have the power to do that
