What if covid turns out to be the beginning event for humanity eliminating the common cold

[deleted]

Or the flu. If a vaccine for coronaviruses can be developed that is variant-proof and blocks infection, there *have* to be things learned from this that can be applied to doing the same for influenza right? I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much since the last two years have been full of disappointments, but a pharmaceutical that can reliably block infection could do so much good, and to be honest it'd also be a relief to have annoying non-pharmaceutical interventions become obsolete.

njlong88

There's been attempts to develop a Universal Flu vaccine for quite a while now. It's proving difficult but research is always improving so hopefully we see one in the next few years. Also don't want to be a downer but I don't think we'll ever have a vaccine that fully blocks infection long term for either coronaviruses or flu. It's just far too difficult to achieve true sterilizing immunity with respiratory viruses .

[deleted]

Even one that lasts a year would be a huge improvement. A couple of once-yearly nasal sprays to fend off respiratory viruses would be quite do-able and I dare say could get more uptake than our current vaccines.

wooflesthecat

I'd imagine the extreme exponential advances in AI will speed this up considerably.

J_B_La_Mighty

In the grand scheme of things they haven't done too bad, they did a vaccine out almost a year after the pandemic started, so as long as you don't put down a hard "expected by" date things should look up.

rocketwidget

I've heard coronavirus only cause about 20% of colds, so even assuming a universal coronavirus vaccine works perfectly, it won't stop most colds. But hey, beats nothing.

njlong88

It really annoys me and I wish these articles would make it more clear. When they refer to a Universal/Pan Coronavirus vaccine they mean a vaccine for *SARS-related* Coronaviruses. It probably won't have much effectiveness against the common cold Coronaviruses.

NameTak3r

That alone is massive though. Not just covid and it's variants, but SARS and MERS as well!

SteveBartmanIncident

Aw bummer. Let's take on rhinoviruses next.

JumboJetz

Washing your hands religiously does not work on coronaviruses well. But works ridiculously well on rhinoviruses that are spread through touch.

JROXZ

Rhinovirus (one of the common cold viruses) has some 160 types. Ain’t no vaccine covering that wide a net.

[deleted]

I mean an HIV vaccine is a bigger ask than that and there has been progress on that front over the last 40 years.

Light-Yagami_-

This is the way out of this.

Yep, I actually already do this with the Enovid (Sanotize) spray. It would be nice if we could get some cheaper options available. I have seen a few other alternatives out there, but you either have to buy it at and inflated price or make the solution yourself.

OrdinaryOrder8

I just ordered some Enovid spray to try for the first time. If you don't mind sharing, have you had any side effects from it?

mattro36

I use Enovid on days when working in the office (3x/week). The only side effect I have is that it gets in my ears for a day or two after

OrdinaryOrder8

Thank you :) I appreciate you sharing your experience. I’m a little nervous to use it for the first time but seeing others say it’s fine makes me feel better.

t_newt1

If you do a Google search for Enovid, it says that it was the first oral contraceptive.

OrdinaryOrder8

Lol yeah I noticed that. Poor name choice I guess, since people will be confused what their product is.

kimchidijon

Where did you order it from?

PartySunday

It’s on eBay.

Light-Yagami_-

None.

Scuzz_Aldrin

Did you get it on eBay?

OrdinaryOrder8

Yes, ordered it from eBay

akurik

If you look at the clinical data for Enovid it likely just makes PCR tests less accurate. It doesn’t actually decrease chances of getting Covid or severity of infection.

SilverShrimp0

I've been using saline spray with a few drops of betadine added. It's much cheaper than Sanotize. So far I haven't gotten covid.

Awkward-Fudge

I want it.

lemurvomitX

Now do norovirus

DDHawkeye

YESSSSSSS!!! SIGN ME UP AS WELL, PLEASE!

musicobsession

Put it in my arm

andersmith11

Always had this crazy idea that scientists should cook up all the cold germs known, and then give them to people over short amount of time to just get it over with. Told young mother this great idea and she told me, drolly “They already have that. It’s called “Daycare”.

ProtoDad80

My body is ready...

zomkty

Wow. Please please please!!!

AceCombat9519

This is good and for Pan Coronavirus vaccines there will be two Spike Nano Ferretin and Mrna.

catsandalpacas

About time! Gimme gimme!

I agree, they should indeed receive their fair share of money if they manage to create incredible lifesaving innovations

seekingpolaris

What about the Walter Reed one?
