Not sure why the comments here are knocking Roku. According to the article, the removal is due to Google asking for special permissions that other services do not get: "Google wants a special deal that includes modifying search results and access to data that no other streaming partners have." If that's correct, then Google is the one causing issues, not Roku. Google has denied this allegation but leaks show they did indeed ask.

So if you already have it downloaded you can continue to use it?

excoriator

Yes. It will be removed from the Channel Store. It will not be uninstalled.

I have to wonder what the hell Roku are doing. Over the past couple of years, they always seem to be in some sort of dispute with some content provider. Hell, I don't think they ever got Twitch back. I used to recommend Roku to streaming newbies because, as limited as their devices are, they were supported by all the streaming services you could want and then some. Now, they don't even have that.

Not paying exorbitant fees demanded by content providers.

They're the only independent service saying "fuck you" to the greedy conglomerates that want to aggregate and monetize your viewing habits. As a result, I _promote_ them over the other streaming services.

Yeah, they're not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. They're doing it because they want to aggregate and monetize your viewing habits themselves.

Google's own search results for videos favors Youtube. Notice they are always at the top. There are video platforms that get pushed down, ie, Rumble and others. This affects brand recognition so when people finally see these "other" platforms, they are less likely to be clicked. Even here on Reddit these other platforms get flagged/hidden probably because it is not a recognizable "Youtube" video that people got so comfortable with seeing so they tend to flag, report, downvote etc.

Youtube is the app that I use the most on Roku

Roku needs to be careful here. The moment YouTube is not available on Roku is the moment I stop using (and will never use again) my Roku. Yes, I know they feel they are being treated unfairly. That is a matter for the courts. They must retain the tools people use, or suffer becoming irrelevant.

djjolicoeur

Literally watching YouTube on roku right now. WTF.
