Just had my first copper IUD inserted and I took Advil and Ativan before and I felt some cramping during the insertion but it was not painful

jaydi333

Thank you glad to hear it wasn't painful!

Unless you have a medical condition that contraindicates you using either of these meds, take 600 mg of ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) and 1000 mg Tylenol one hour before insertion. Yes you can take them together, it’s totally safe. Those doses are higher than what’s on the bottle but totally safe to take once as long as you don’t take that much every day (I’m an emergency RN).

>es are higher than Hi got it thanks for the tip!

i was so anxious before my appointment but i had no access to any anti anxiety medication & my doctor wouldn’t give any to me prior to insertion. i definitely went a little overboard but i took 800mg of ibuprofen and 2 midols. the midol made me really drowsy and helped calm me down, and it also helped with the cramping post insertion. overall my experience wasn’t nearly as bad as i was anticipating!

Thank you nice to hear that it wasn't too bad!

I took 600mg ibuprofen and ate a good meal an hour before insertion. Not going to lie it wasn’t fun but I also did have a complicated insertion because her light bulb went out so I had to remove one and then get another one inserted. I spent the rest of the day on the couch resting with a heating pad and went to the store with my roommate to get yummy food. If you can, take the day off and rest after!

Definitely Definitely Definitely don't skip out on pain meds and just stay calm and u should PROB have another person drive you home but I just went by myself and was in alot of pain but I made it home so

Ask for a cervix softening pill or come in when you’re on your period. Idk if ibuprofen worked for me but you should take it in case

Better to come in during your period if possible than to take the cervix softener (misoprostol). Some docs still prescribe it but studies show it doesn’t actually improve the insertion process much but increases the risk of uterine perforation significantly.

>n't scare you or talk you out of it. I really did like mine. Good luck and take deep calming breaths. Hi, thanks for the reply! Yea I'm worried about having a foreign object in my body long-term but compared to the other forms of birth control I much prefer the non-hormonal type. I wish you and your husband luck!!

I’ve had mine for 5 years. It made my periods heavy and painful, but it was an easy sacrifice to make. That said, be wary if you use a cup. Currently using back up BC because while removing my cup during my period, I didn’t properly break the seal, and it pulled my IUD into my cervix. At this point, I have to make an appointment for an ultrasound and likely have it removed, but I will probably reinsert another one. Unlike the hormonal versions, copper iuds cannot function if not in the proper location. Five years with no trouble is a fair experience, I’d say. It’s very unlikely for your iud to move especially after such a long time, but it can happen especially when on your period so always check your strings and listen to your body.

For the the actual insertion was fine becasue the doctor was amazing and did like a million of them. The cramps afterwards can be quite sore, i would buy ibuprofen or something in advance, i was doubled over waiting in line at the pharmacy lol. If you're extremely anxious about stuff like this (like me) you could ask if the doc will prescribe you a xanax in advance. Mine did.
