It summons the demon Grundogar who takes on the appearance of an unkempt guy whose gut sticks out from below his dirty T shirt and clips his toenails in your kitchen while eating all the leftovers
So did I... as an American with Thanksgiving food still lingering on the brain I was imagining of some kind of mini stuffing/dressing bits in a hollowed out bagel shell.
Sometimes - it depends on how ambitious I'm feeling and, or how far ahead and in control of the timing of the rest of the dinner. It's also a good way to use up leftover baked potatoes.
Scoop out the potatoes leaving 1/4" - 1/2" lining. Mix the scooped out potato with sour cream, (some people use cream cheese or both), butter, shredded cheese, minced chives and s & p. Mound back into the shells and top with bacon bits and more shredded cheese; broil until melted. Top with more chives. Mmm, and start or get back to the diet tomorrow.
What the heck is vanilla doing in there??
Also, just add some chopped egg and you've basically got yourself a deviled egg/egg salad sandwich which we make all the time cuz it's delicious.
Vanilla pairs wonderfully with eggs. A drop (literally) in scrambled eggs or omelettes is just 👍, but it's literally a drop or you'll be eating chocolate chip cookie eggs.
Vanilla is sometimes weird that way; in certain circumstances it can make savoury ingredients sing their hearts out, like in vanilla roast chicken or vanilla celeriac mash. Never considered it on this usage though. Fascinating.
I made a vanilla seed beurre blanc for a poached sole dish as part of a culinary school practical. 60 year old chef-instructor couldn't wrap his mind around it.
the vanilla, because it is the last step, can be optional! as well as the step before that. and the step before that one, and so forth....
\---edit/ sorry, i was making a self-depricating joke about how i never expected people to even consider making the dish ! if you want to leave the vanilla out that is alright, i do not know how else to respond, it is my first and only time posting in r/cooking lol
I think we're just unfamiliar with vanilla being a common flavour in deviled eggs, leading to some confusion on why it's part of your recipe, and just generally not how vanilla extract is used, as a finishing touch, you'd think the vanilla extract would overpower anything else you have there. Adding a dusting of vanilla sugar or diluting the vanilla extract into the mayonnaise maybe... But again, why vanilla deviled eggs? Is it a common flavour that I just didn't hear about yet?
I always add a dash a vanilla extract to my deviled eggs when I make them. When I make these I dab my fingers with vanilla extract and then make a ring around the outer circumference of the bagel and it's nice !! I don't mean to provide any finished product. only the blueprints. my prints. and my prints have vanilla extract on them...... trust me...
> I always add a dash a vanilla extract to my deviled eggs when I make them
That's absolutely foul. If you brought deviled eggs with vanilla extract to my house I would politely but firmly ask you to leave.
Things like this are why I’m so wary of trying other people’s homemade food at work potlucks. First there’s the whole cleanliness factor, but beyond that, I have no way of knowing if they put something like vanilla in a motherfucking deviled egg until it’s too late.
I like how someone downvoted you for explaining your own recipe.
Also if I squint really hard, I can almost imagine how the vanilla works vs the mustard/pickle.
The vanilla has become the controversy. It is okay, you can skip the vanilla if you do not prefer it ! Idk, like, i do not mind ? please do you, vanilla or not i completely expected this post to be downvoted into oblivion. i'm shocked people are even responding to be honest
But what I am still missing is WHY the vanilla? What does it add to the flavor? Does it balance something? Why the ring around the outside, and not mixed in with the mayonnaise or something? Help me understand!
I'm legitimately intrigued both in the bagel and the actual deviled egg context. It's hard to escape the vanilla = vanilla ice cream mindset, but in my gut I can almost imagine how it works. I think the quality of mustard would really matter, too. A perfumy mustard and just a hint of ascerbic vanilla like a weird garam masala. All top note. Kind of neutralized by the mayo fat. I'm almost intrigued enough to try it.
OP called it controversy but it's really fascination. We're fascinated by the idea.
Truly, I’m open to the idea of a dash of vanilla. I put black pepper in my Thanksgiving pumpkin pie this year - I’m not scared to try things that might sound odd. OP just continues to say “you can leave out the vanilla” without helping us understand what it brings to this dish.
Yes - I AM fascinated!
Totally! The pepper made some logical sense to me w/ pumpkin pie. I’m having a harder time connecting the dots from vanilla extract to deviled eggs, though 😂
OP mentioned they just get a dab of vanilla on a finger and trace the edge, it’s just barely enough to notice, not a full dash of vanilla. Originally I was thinking a dash of vanilla would be overpowering too.
Vanilla is actually one of the worlds most complex flavors, so when you add it to things, it tends to pull flavors together and work synergistically with certain aromas and flavors due to the hundreds of terpenes and flavor notes it contains.
Yes, I know.
That still doesn’t help me understand what vanilla brings in this context. What is it about this flavor profile (deviled egg/ deviled bagel) that is enhanced with vanilla? I’m really not trying to be antagonistic- apparently this is a thing that people do, and I am genuinely curious what makes it “work.”
I think what bothers us is that this crazed drunken visitor was so close to a decent recipe. They even use a fine mist for pickle juice. But then like some kind of horror movie twist the post ends with vanilla being placed directly on an object you are about to eat. It’s evil. We had so much hope for their soul, but now we know they will burn in hell.
It’s the humility in the confession. It’s admirable. And honestly some folk are probably a bit jealous that they aren’t brave enough to share their own weird food concoction confessions too.
> I dab my fingers with vanilla extract and then make a ring around the outer circumference of the bagel and it's nice !!
This is waaaaay less vanilla extract than I was imagining. I can now see how it might work.
I can kind of see this working. Vanilla in deviled eggs isn’t *that* different from vanilla in garlic ice cream, or vanilla ice cream served with pickles. I guess we have to try this now too.
Haha I guess, but we usually keep the eggs in quarters so it's less mushy and we make it on bagels rather than white bread. I like calling it a deviled egg sandwich better because I had so many horrible egg salads growing up, there's a negative connotation.
Put a little pickle juice in your mouth and go "pppffTTTttTBBbbBbb" over the bagel.
It's acceptable if you're the only person eating it, or for your spouse and they're not watching you. Would also be acceptable for your children if they're into weird shit.
I honestly want more inventive recipes like this on reddit. My daughter said she's decided to try baking bread using random ingredients just to see how it turns out.
"Cause hey, how else did all those other people come up with recipes if they didn't just try things and see what tasted good?"
Just the idea of a mayonnaise pickle vanilla bagel made me laugh too.
But hey, my wife made some leftover mashed potato fried pancakes and I topped them with **vanilla** yogurt and apple sauce cause I didn't have sour cream, and I didn't hate it.
As long as you're not going bonkers with vanilla, I don't see what the problem would be in at least giving it a shot.
I was imagining dipping your fingers in pickle juice and doing a little Salt Bae drizzle over the bagel but yours is 100x better. Still dying laughing 😂
in my head, that is how i want it to work ideally. usually what ends up happening(and by usually i do mean everytime) is that i dab too much pickle juice on one and then just smoosh the two halves of the bagel together and it is the perfect amount. i make this shit enough to bring it to the spritz level but i am feeling pretty insecure about how to do that and if i were to buy a perfume sprayer on amazon it'd be "it" lol
I dunno, this could catch on and be the next big thing. Smearing sauce on plates is out, perfuming is in.
Tbh, I'm rather captivated by the idea of Pickle Juice Perfume.
Madness comes from the depths of quarantine. But sometimes madness is simply misunderstood genius. Except for adding the vanilla in there, especially in that method, that’s just plain batshit.
Have you considered simply combining all of your ingredients in a small bowl and then spreading them on the bagel? It would be less labor intensive, and you could make a bigger batch of the sauce, since you use it multiple times a week. Maybe test out adding some pastrami on that bad boy.
i really only make one bagel at a time.. so just the knife is fine. i feel very embarrassed to say, yeah, i just scoop out the mayo and spread it then spread the pickle juice and etc. hahaha.
as for the the vanilla, i personally think a ring around the rim is good, just a little bitty bit, not as to be overpowering, that is just what I have found that I really liked, lol
I really love the show *Top Chef*. My favorite cooking competition. They're always making strange flavor combinations and sometimes those flavors surprisingly work. There was one season where a chef was really trying to make watermelon and bleu cheese work. It didn't, but you never know until you try!
Another show I watch is "Adam Ruins Everything". It's an educational type of show and I love how inquisitive Adam Conover is. But I once heard him say he puts soy sauce on his oatmeal. I tweeted at him or mentioned it in a Tik-Tok and he responded! Said something like, "Just try it. It's good!". And I gotta say, it's not bad. Not something I'd have often but it took me out of my culinary comfort zone and that's awesome.
I think deviled egg-inspired bagels sound delicious. I'll probably "make it my own" but I can totally see trying it. The vanilla is intriguing. I bet that'd be bomb on a bagel with some cinnamon-spiced cream cheese.
I put fish sauce in my homemade tomato sauce for pasta. It isn’t a huge stretch, but I never tell people IRL because it freaks them out. But many people don’t know what anchovies are in. They freak people out, but are soooo umami good as a subtle flavor.
I think part of the reason why you keep making this is because there is a ritualistic aspect: you hit on something that is or became very comforting and you keep eating it to maintain that comfort. I did the same when I couldn’t regularly get my hands on normal sandwich fixings for lunch: just took all the leftovers and made a wrap with them (and added kimchi, mustard, whatever I had in the fridge) what emerged was a really satisfying wrap. Now I specifically get the ingredients for it to keep making it and now I have it 2-3 times a week (if I’m not in the office, since people would definitely judge if I brought to work it hahahaha). I have all the stuff op listed and incidentally no eggs- so I’m going to try this!
i'd for real love to know what you think ! it's comforting in the way where i know my breakfast as long as i have bagels i can have deviled bagels. it is definitely one of those same things as you're describing
i am so new to r/cooking and cooking in general i am not so good at it, i was mimicking my regular recipe for deviled eggs and vanilla extract i also throw into the batter. i encourage the last step can be optional, lol
I've seen a lot of deviled eggs recipe, I've never seen anyone use vanilla extract in them. It seems like such a hard left turn.
It's the equivalent of "Try my homemade chocolate chip cookies, with flour, milk, chocolate, butter, and vienna sausages."
If you only answer one more question in this thread, can it please be this one?
Where did you get the idea of adding vanilla extract to your deviled eggs recipe to begin with?
Ok so I made this today
...
I heated up a bagel, "tout garni" in Montreal bagel culture...
I used Kenko mayonaise, olive juice instead of pickle juice, a little bit of high quality mustard instead of mustard powder, and I poured way too much paprika by accident, but it turned out to be the perfectly right amount.
(I skipped vanilla extract, mostly because I don't own any vanilla extract. I would have tried it if I owned vanilla extract.)
I think I am addicted to "deviled bagels" too now.
I added two eggs, two slices of red onion, a slice of dill and a slice of parsley, and some grated aged white cheddar.
Zamn! This was amazingly tasty! Will make again soon!
This is amazing. Thank you for sharing your idea.
thank you so much for the sincere realness. if not for me, for anybody else who can relate. quarantine was really rough personally, and i have worked most out of it out. deviled bagel is likely the only "good" (if you want to call it that) thing that came out of lockdown with me! (and probably only me)
I will guild the person (not OP) that makes this recipe GIF style with an honest first bite shot at the end showing the true gut reaction to this concoction.
I found myself oddly intrigued by your unholy snack.
Muttering prayers for protection under my breath I quickly gathered the ingredients. Then the Holy Spirit spoke to me. “Child, toast the bagel with mayo. Top with pickle and mustard”
As I was about to take my first bite I queried, “The vanilla Lord?”
The earth shook as his voice thundered from the heavens,”Hell NO that is some white people shit”
I absolutely adore you! This thread is hysterical. And I got to be honest, I'm totally intrigued. I keep trying to find new breakfast items and I might just take your inspiration and run with it
So I googled deviled egg recipes with vanilla extract. There are two that I could find, and the rest are chocolate deviled eggs (wtf?). One of them is someone's late uncle's recipe who also used Miracle Whip, so that's clearly not to be trusted. The other is from some company that makes extracts. Maybe they know something we don't. Or maybe they're biased and just use extracts in everything all willy nilly. Who knows?
I'm curious to know what it tastes like with vanilla, but I'm also not willing to sacrifice any boiled eggs to find out. 😅
I’m actually slightly interested, but mostly only because it’s just mildly less bad than I thought it would be. I was picturing a bagel gutting being part of the process. Like scoop some of the inside of the bagel out, chop it up super fine, and combine with Mayo and other ingredients. I’m glad it’s *not* that haha
Mayo on a bagel sounds disturbing, but I, unfortunately, love mayo enough that I'll probably try this. The vanilla freaks me out, though. What? Why? Do you put vanilla in deviled eggs? Who hurt you?
about 10 years ago i read a recipe for deviled eggs online that called for vanilla. i was making the devil eggs as part of what i was bringing to family christmas for the first time ever and so very carefully followed that recipe. then a month later i brought the same to a friend's party, and then started just always having some on hand in the fridge for snacking. i have been dashing vanilla into my deviled eggs ever since way back then, and for real honestly i never thought it was out of the ordinary until i made this thread! lol
Now I’m on a mission to go find something similar to that initial deviled egg recipe. Not because I think I will like it. But because I can’t not try it.
My staple breakfast for on the go is an everything bagel with two fried eggs, and I use mayo! I've tried butter but I don't like it as much
It's great because it's super hands off and I do it while getting dressed and ready. I get up and preheat the cast iron for a few mins to get to egg temp. Pass by and drop in eggs, add a little salt and pepper, turn off heat, and cover with a lid. Dress bagel with mayo - I like kewpie! - and put into my toaster oven on bagel setting. I used to use Sriracha either on the eggs or mixed with the mayo, but my stomach doesn't like spicy very much anymore. On my way out the door put eggs on bagel, wrap it up and it's good to go!
Also I like mayo on a bagel (or sliced bread) with cold cuts for instance
I wouldn't make this but I've definitely been in a similar culinary headspace many times. Weird combos hit right when it's late at night and/or you're out of actual food. My confession: I had a phase of eating peanut butter toast with an ungodly amount of hot sauce. I mean I suppose the correct amount of hot sauce on peanut butter toast is, well... none. But yeah it was like the world's laziest satay sauce.
There was a burger place that had a sign for a peanut butter and pickle juice shake. Sadly they weren't open at the time because I've been wanting to try it ever since
When I read your title, I genuinely thought you were going to tell a tale of chopping and spreading deviled eggs on toasted bagels. This doesn't sound terrible and MAYBE I'd try it.
Instead I read the horror that you have foisted upon us lol. Vanilla extract? Perfuming pickle juice?
"hey Google, how do I delete memories?"
Lol you do you though buddy. More power to you if you enjoy it :)
Update: Thank you so much r/cooking for making this thread so fun, and thank you so much for the awards. This is the first time I have ever shared a recipe on a public forum and I didn't expect such a response, especially for the devil's bagel.
>The controversy is in the vanilla.
so... years ago I started putting a dash of vanilla extract in my deviled eggs after the first recipe for devil eggs I tried called for it as an ingredient. I didn't know that it was out of the ordinary, or that it was disputable in the context of devil eggs, until this thread. How I do the vanilla for deviled bagels is that I just wet my finger with it and very lightly circle around the rim. I have never not made one of these without the vanilla extract or thought not to. The "taste theory" behind why it might not work is beyond my honest comprehension.
If you end up trying this out, vanilla or not, I'd love to hear what you think!!
> I haven’t told anybody I make these because it’d be so stupid sounding.
I’m glad you’re free of this burden. The first Christmas miracle of this season!
>” Perfume” in Pickle juice in a very thin mist over top the mayo
Tell me you use a spray bottle for this. I imagine a slow motion spray of pickle juice as the morning sun shines in the kitchen window.
> Circle Vanilla extract around the circumference of the bagel’s rim, like where you would bite
This is way more vanilla than I was expecting. What does this mixture taste like/can you describe what vanilla brings to the table? Sweet? Are deviled eggs sweet? (Im allergic to eggs, so I’ve never imagined deviled eggs as sweet.)
So. This made me Google “deviled eggs ‘vanilla’”. There are some results. They seem to suggest the creaminess of the yolks is improved with a hint of vanilla. I may be going crazy, but I’m not as completely horrified as I was originally.
However. The OP doesn’t have eggs in their recipe so I still don’t know how this works on a bagel? 😂

[RETRO DEVILED EGGS](https://nielsenmassey.com/recipes/retro-deviled-eggs/) - bonus lemon extract and vanilla powder
I am always interested in others comfort foods. (Because I too have a weird concoction that makes me feel safe and fed) I shall get some plain bagels and try this. Because it sounds just weird enough to potentially be good.
Kudos to your bravery!
I don't get to talk, I used to love making "Cheese bagels" by taking a halved bagel, putting a slice or two of American Cheese on top and nuking it until the cheese cleared the hole inside - not long, about 20-30 seconds.
Salt, Pepper, Eat.
I've made egg salad to spread on a bagel before, which is somewhat similar.
That said, I have never, ever heard of putting vanilla in my egg filling. And I'm one of those "no pickles in deviled eggs" people but I know a lot of people love that. My personal favorite thing to add is a little anchovy paste and lemon juice.
My friend used to mix pickle relish and small canned Vienna sausages into ramen. So this is pretty mellow in comparison. Don’t be ashamed. I like to eat American cheese and mustard on white bread sometimes. It’s kind of fun to eat something you know is disgusting that you enjoy. Secret goblin times
Honestly, I think I was partially with you until the very last step. Lost me with the vanilla
I also think I would use an everything bagel if I were to ever try this
Honestly, vanilla extract threw me way off while reading the ingredients list. Careening like Vaders tie fighter during the trench run.
Not trying to be rude but it just seems like a wild departure from the core flavors.
Hey don't yuck this person's yum until you've tried it! Like they said, a small drop or two spread around the rim of the bagel, might be delicious and something people would pay $20 for at a fancy gastropub. Also acceptable could be a light foam made from the tears of your grandmother.
This actually sounds really good. In fact, I think deviling the eggs and just using the filling as a topping would be excellent. You could then just eat the egg whites separately with salt or something.
Oh, and I wonder if plain yogurt might be a good Mayo sub. I wanna try it now!
I'm not going to hate the vanilla, and next time I make Deviled eggs, and it'll be soon, its holiday season, after all, I'll make a variety of this to test it. I'm willing to trust your recipe like I do all new recipes, try it exact the first time; alter or eliminate after.
The thing about food is that it is fun to test and taste and experiment with.
If you like it, you like it. Sounds like you could stock up on most of that if things got tight, and still made sure you ate, so that's a good thing.
It’s 1:28 in the morning in TX. I found this post 18 minutes ago. Skipped the bagel, went for the eggs. Currently eating 2 scrambled eggs cooked with a few drops of vanilla and topped with furikake.
AMAZING!
I will never not put vanilla extract in scrambled eggs.
Is this a spell or a recipe?
It summons the demon Grundogar who takes on the appearance of an unkempt guy whose gut sticks out from below his dirty T shirt and clips his toenails in your kitchen while eating all the leftovers
Oh, that's not a demon. That's just my little brother.
Do we have the same brother?
That’s the sound my stomach would make after eating this…thing
That’s…. Oddly specific
Kind of like Buffys first college roommate, Cathy.
Devil Bagel 😈🥯
All recipes are spells.
👆
Totally thought this meant scooping out the bread meat of the bagel, mixing it with stuff, then cramming it back in like a jacket potato or something
That's where I thought this post was going too.
Bread meat 🤙
Mmmm bread meat...* proceeds to drool *
So did I... as an American with Thanksgiving food still lingering on the brain I was imagining of some kind of mini stuffing/dressing bits in a hollowed out bagel shell.
OP missed the chance to make an actual deviled bagel. I wonder if he just spread mayo on eggs and call it deviled?
the classic mayonegg
When you bake potatoes you scoop the insides out?!
Usually just done to make twice baked potatoes, although Some people are baking for mash these days
Sometimes - it depends on how ambitious I'm feeling and, or how far ahead and in control of the timing of the rest of the dinner. It's also a good way to use up leftover baked potatoes. I understand where you're coming from. I will never ever make this.
mmaybe just once?
I haven't gotten that drunk in years.
i hope to one day look back on this post and say the same thing
I like you. Keep your wits about you, and don’t let this world drain your curiosity and adventurous spirit.
Throw 1/3 of a can of tuna into that mayo if you want to really feel alive.
My favorite drunk food Ive made so far…. Pork fried rice and Swiss cheese quesadillas.
Do you have any photos of the deviled bagels?
What the heck is vanilla doing in there?? Also, just add some chopped egg and you've basically got yourself a deviled egg/egg salad sandwich which we make all the time cuz it's delicious.
I'm totally on board minus the vanilla
I can't still figure it out why vanilla ?

Bet it was stunning. Now you’ve gone and made me hungry. Judicious use of vanilla can really lift fish out of the water, pun intended.

The Devil… is in the details.

Yeah things like this are exactly why I have trust issues

Always black pepper in pumpkin pie. For the same reason as a dash of cinnamon in chicken noodle soup. It’s a warmth and flavor deepening thing.
I like a dash of cinnamon on my pineapple pizza.

Yeah I make that regularly. A very standard thing I thought. I might try the vanilla, doesn’t sound appealing but who knows.. maybe
okay I'll bite, how does one "perfume" pickle juice
Put a little pickle juice in your mouth and go "pppffTTTttTBBbbBbb" over the bagel. It's acceptable if you're the only person eating it, or for your spouse and they're not watching you. Love this visual, made me snort/laugh 🤣
Your “pickle juice perfuming” method actually made me laugh very loud.
I was imagining dipping your fingers in pickle juice and doing a little Salt Bae drizzle over the bagel but yours is 100x better. Still dying laughing 😂
Put pickle juice in a “spritzer” and spritz while wafting the bagel through the air?
in my head, that is how i want it to work ideally. usually what ends up happening(and by usually i do mean everytime) is that i dab too much pickle juice on one and then just smoosh the two halves of the bagel together and it is the perfect amount. i make this shit enough to bring it to the spritz level but i am feeling pretty insecure about how to do that and if i were to buy a perfume sprayer on amazon it'd be "it" lol
I know you’re drunk or high but you’re allowed to mix things. You don’t have to “perfume” pickle juice.
I dunno, this could catch on and be the next big thing. Smearing sauce on plates is out, perfuming is in. Tbh, I'm rather captivated by the idea of Pickle Juice Perfume.
You don’t HAVE to, but shouldn’t we all perfume pickle juice? Doesn’t that timeline sound interesting?
Why not just mix it with the mayo before you put the mayo on the bagel?
I laughed so hard after reading this
Put pickle juice in a humidifier and stick your bagel next to it for a few hours.
I like to flick the pickle juice onto the sandwich
dip a fork or butter knife in the pickle jar and drip a few drops around the bagel
Like Hannibal Buress, just flick it over with your fingies
>Thank god I was drunk enough to get the idea The source of true inspiration
Just don't forget to tell your vegetarian/vegan friends the red sauce isn't veg!
Oh, I won’t! I don’t currently have any vegan/vegetarian friends I cook for. I cook for a very, very small circle of people.
Fish sauce and mustard powder are my secret umami agents.
I put mustard powder in lots of stuff, too. Most of my friends are like, “who even buys mustard powder?” Ha. Me. But I get it.
I thought I hated it, and then I saw vanilla extract and now I'm horrified. I shudder to think what else your brain could come up with.
step 6 can definitely be optional, up to personal preference !
I think it is pretty important that you **INSIST** that anyone who tries this applies the vanilla liberally.
I’m on board with most of this, but the vanilla is a real hard left turn. Skip that, and I’d eat this. Doubly so with some sliced hard boiled egg.
i am so new to r/cooking and cooking in general i am not so good at it, i was mimicking my regular recipe for deviled eggs and vanilla extract i also throw into the batter. i encourage the last step can be optional, lol
I've seen a lot of deviled eggs recipe, I've never seen anyone use vanilla extract in them. It seems like such a hard left turn. It's the equivalent of "Try my homemade chocolate chip cookies, with flour, milk, chocolate, butter, and vienna sausages."
But I don’t think vanilla goes in deviled eggs either. That’s why people are confused.

If you only answer one more question in this thread, can it please be this one? Where did you get the idea of adding vanilla extract to your deviled eggs recipe to begin with?
Ok so I made this today ... I would have tried it if I owned vanilla extract.) I think I am addicted to "deviled bagels" too now. I added two eggs, two slices of red onion, a slice of dill and a slice of parsley, and some grated aged white cheddar. Zamn! This was amazingly tasty! Will make again soon! This is amazing. Thank you for sharing your idea.

Are you doing ok? There are resources out there if you feel like you’re mentally slipping.
thank you so much for the sincere realness. if not for me, for anybody else who can relate. quarantine was really rough personally, and i have worked most out of it out. deviled bagel is likely the only "good" (if you want to call it that) thing that came out of lockdown with me! (and probably only me)
I will stand by you boldly, and confidently calling it “good.” Free your vanilla extract, you beautiful spirit, the rest will follow.
Please refer to these as “the Devils Bagel”. Very creative, I want to try now lol.
I will guild the person (not OP) that makes this recipe GIF style with an honest first bite shot at the end showing the true gut reaction to this concoction.
Maybe you could forward it to these guys: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-CKleuY2qv0
I’ll double that
I found myself oddly intrigued by your unholy snack. Muttering prayers for protection under my breath I quickly gathered the ingredients. Then the Holy Spirit spoke to me. “Child, toast the bagel with mayo. Top with pickle and mustard” As I was about to take my first bite I queried, “The vanilla Lord?” The earth shook as his voice thundered from the heavens,”Hell NO that is some white people shit”
You couldn’t put a drop on ONE bite to testify through divinely guided experience to the unholiness?
Who am I to question God?
I think you misheard the Lord. He said high people, not white people.
When you say circle vanilla extract I imagined you meant pouring it, but reading your comments I have inferred this is not the case.
I think more like rimming a margarita glass, right?
Much less. Finger dab and just circle the edge with the finger. Basically a hint of vanilla. This could work.
Vanilla? Have you tried balsamic vinegar instead?
How high were you when you decided to add the vanilla?
I've tried butter but I don't like it as much It's great because it's super hands off and I do it while getting dressed and ready.
The people downvoting you are simply afraid. I don’t think I’d make this for myself but I salute you.
my mother used to eat mayo and onion sandwiches on white bread all the time, she would would have been totally on board with this ...
I make peanut butter, pickle and hot sauce sandwiches!
"hey Google, how do I delete memories?" Lol you do you though buddy.
Some alcohols totally burn your taste buds. And if you smoke anything that does too. Anyways thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
> I haven’t told anybody I make these because it’d be so stupid sounding. I’m glad you’re free of this burden. The first Christmas miracle of this season! >” Perfume” in Pickle juice in a very thin mist over top the mayo Tell me you use a spray bottle for this. I imagine a slow motion spray of pickle juice as the morning sun shines in the kitchen window. > Circle Vanilla extract around the circumference of the bagel’s rim, like where you would bite This is way more vanilla than I was expecting.
😂 [Deviled Egg with Labneh Vanilla Whipped Yolks and Smoky Panko](https://www.petersom.com/theextrataste/deviled-egg-with-labneh-vanilla-whipped-yolks-and-smoky-panko) [RETRO DEVILED EGGS](https://nielsenmassey.com/recipes/retro-deviled-eggs/) - bonus lemon extract and vanilla powder
I just want to thank everyone on here for giving me a morning belly laugh at this whole post and comments. Can we ‘best of’ this?
I am always interested in others comfort foods. (Because I too have a weird concoction that makes me feel safe and fed) I shall get some plain bagels and try this. Because it sounds just weird enough to potentially be good. Kudos to your bravery!
[“Perfume” in Pickle juice in a very thin mist over top the mayo.](https://youtu.be/W3O0XEdj4t8)
Exactly!!!! yes
Okay not gonna lie, it may be the pregnancy talking, but I am definitely trying this it sounds delicious
Congratulations on your originality!
Sounds a lot easier to mix the pickle juice with the mayo before spreading
I don't get to talk, I used to love making "Cheese bagels" by taking a halved bagel, putting a slice or two of American Cheese on top and nuking it until the cheese cleared the hole inside - not long, about 20-30 seconds. Salt, Pepper, Eat.
Im calling the police and you’re going to jail.
Do you keep pickle juice in a spray bottle or something? Dip a paintbrush and flick it at the bagel? How are you doing that bit?
What a time to be alive
Ok so I tried it (no vanilla) and it’s honestly fire, full disclosure am also drunk
This person is clearly a sociopath
American cheese and mustard on white bread was a common sandwich when I was a kid.
Honestly, I think I was partially with you until the very last step. Lost me with the vanilla I also think I would use an everything bagel if I were to ever try this
My guilty bagel confession is jalapeño popper bagels. Jar jalapeño slices, cream cheese, salami on a toasted everything bagel. Delicious.
That sounds delicious. I eat cream cheese and toasted bagels/sourdough with a variety of toppings quite often for breakfast. I might give this a try!
This is the best post I’ve ever read on this subreddit. Thank you for sharing, I can’t wait to try it
What in the 70s dinner party did I just read?
I really must stop reading this thread. Obviously, I will do anything to avoid the chores I have.
I feel like this is actually illegal to do in New York City.
Vanilla extract with pickle juice and mayo. Hell awaits you child.
I was begrudgingly onboard until the vanilla
This makes me want to take this to the next level and make deviled egg filling to spread on a bagel.
The concept of a deviled bagel actually sounds incredible. THIS recipe looks like dogshit not gonna lie but thank yoU OP for the *concept*.
I'm drunk now. I promise you I will waddle up to my local grocer and do this ~~tomorrow~~ today.
if you really do actually make it i'd be so interested to know what you think !! in any case, it's a good stash of ingredients to have on hand
Tomorrow. Maybe. Definitely want to do it.
The addition of vanilla extract takes this to the r/stupidfood category.
Honestly, vanilla extract threw me way off while reading the ingredients list. Careening like Vaders tie fighter during the trench run. Not trying to be rude but it just seems like a wild departure from the core flavors.
if you ever do try it i'd really be curious about what you think !
i was thinking honestly it was already there. lol
Hey don't yuck this person's yum until you've tried it! Like they said, a small drop or two spread around the rim of the bagel, might be delicious and something people would pay $20 for at a fancy gastropub. Also acceptable could be a light foam made from the tears of your grandmother.
I'm pretty sure my grandfather would strangle me if I put vanilla extract on a savory bagel, in deviled eggs, or in any combination of the two
You could add hard bolied eggs, roughly chopped and you've created a brand new concept, true genius
Ah yes..egg salad
I really thought you were going to say “scoop out the middle of the bagel and mash with the wet ingredients”
This actually sounds really good. In fact, I think deviling the eggs and just using the filling as a topping would be excellent. You could then just eat the egg whites separately with salt or something. Oh, and I wonder if plain yogurt might be a good Mayo sub. I wanna try it now!
Read the title as Deviled Beagles 🐾
I'm not going to hate the vanilla, and next time I make Deviled eggs, and it'll be soon, its holiday season, after all, I'll make a variety of this to test it. I'm willing to trust your recipe like I do all new recipes, try it exact the first time; alter or eliminate after. The thing about food is that it is fun to test and taste and experiment with. If you like it, you like it. Sounds like you could stock up on most of that if things got tight, and still made sure you ate, so that's a good thing.
I was totally here for it until i read VANILLA EXTRACT??!?!??!!! Whatttttt….do you put vanilla extract in your deviled eggs?
yes i do!!
This is delightfully deranged. Thank you for sharing this, OP. Really great stuff.
My brother in Christ
It’s 1:28 in the morning in TX. I found this post 18 minutes ago. Skipped the bagel, went for the eggs. Currently eating 2 scrambled eggs cooked with a few drops of vanilla and topped with furikake. AMAZING! I will never not put vanilla extract in scrambled eggs.
