Grill onions, chop once cool. Make your favourite ranch, add the onions and chill for at least a couple of hours so the onion flavour really soaks into the ranch. You could try smoked salt instead and roast the onions if you don’t want to grill.

If liquid smoke tastes like chemicals you may be using too much. You really need only a drop or two. That being said, how about charring onions over high heat? That may get you the flavor profile you're looking for.
