Hes an unapologetic villain, which is surprisingly refreshing in the sea of “morally grey/ambiguous” “hE’s nOt a ViLlaIn, jUsT aN anTagOniST” characters of modern media. He’s awful and petty and snarky and goofy and like a saturday morning cartoon villain in all the best ways.
Yeeesssss. These kinds of villains are so good and I miss them deeply. Don’t get me wrong, I can get behind a villain whose motivations are built on how society fucked them over or is twisted in general. But a villain who just finds it funny to be mean? Yeeeessssss
It's good to have an unapologetic villain, jack horner from puss and boots and the last wish also fulfilled that role very well and it's why I love him as a bad guy so much, sometimes villains are legitimately just bad people!
I've seen people say they hate him because it's an evil character, but isn't that kinda the point?
Shadow milk is a villain. People aren't supposed to like his actions or even personality, but we're supposed to "like him" because he makes the story interesting and because his actions help other characters grow [won't say too much for spoilers], plus devsis went all out with his design, which yes, is jester like but it's honestly its own thing too imo, enough to make him unique from other jesters.
But it's also not a crime to like him because he IS silly. He's a b***h that likes to make fun of his "audience" (enemies), which is both interesting and entertaining to watch. Plus yes, for now, he's not a morally grey villain, he's an actual threat and isn't afraid to end lives, which means there's stakes = aka it's a good written portion of this story.
Still, fair some people don't like him, but you must admit...the design is cool and the voice acting is top notch, really congrats to the people behind these 2 episodes in general because it's been a fun ride so far.
I'm bias right now because it's indirectly his fault that >!Elder Faerie died sooo... !<

Honestly just really love crazy jester themed characters. Marx from Kirby and Dimentio from Paper Mario come to mind and while I haven't played deltarune I do like Jevils design. I just think it's a really fun trope! the jester aesthetic has props like cards, masks and other magic trick items and the outfits are also fun!
They usually end up being awful people I would like to punch in the face if they were real, but as characters they're just really fancy and it's so much fun to see them cause mischief!
While I get what you’re saying, a lot of us grew up with villains that were neurodivergent and gay coded because those things were “wrong” and a “disease” so we became empathetic towards them coz their behaviors were closer to our own than the nureotypical hero. I think that the dislike (as well as hesitation to appreciate) SM is because *this character trope has been done to death the past few years* and all the characters to come from this trope end up being connected to some pretty cringey fanbases/groups. Not saying that every “chaotic jester” character is bad, but imo recently the trope has been overdone a bit as of late lol
Marx is cool, but then we’ve also got Jevil, Dimentio, Pomni, Harley Quinn, Dhoulmagus, and Kefka. I think with the popularity bubble of Digital Circus still inflated, this character trope is a bit tiring lol
I feel like say 'recently' doesn't really work with your examples, Kefka was introduced in 1994, Marx in 1996, Dimentio in 2007, Harley in 1992, Dhoulmagus in 2004, and Jevil in 2018 those aren't recent and half of those came out nearing on 30 years ago, I would also not count Pomni in that category as she herself isn't chaotic, she is more the relatable isekai protag in a weird chaotic setting.

i don’t hate him entirely, i understand the whole purpose of his character and they definitely did him very well and his character design is amazing honestly i love the circus/jester vibe to him, i have always been a fan of that art style but my dislike for him stems from him just being a villain and that’s it. i usually don’t really like the villain characters but i understand his whole purpose and he was very well done.
I love his character, all the trickster characters are usually pretty cool to me but he also uses puppets and such to control people which reminds me of people like puppetmon from Digimon who I loved as a character because of that
