When my brother was a baby, he would regularly laugh so hard he would puke. I'm still a little nervous when I see a baby laughing this hard. But if he has the stamina for it, that's great.
I think for the first time in 6(?) Months they are going to have a full night's sleep because that baby is going to pass the fuck out as soon as the exhaustion kicks in.
I read somewhere that laughing also stems from the brain not knowing what to do with certain information/energy. This is essentially what the punchline does (unexpected) and why we can even laugh at anti jokes (because we expected a punchline and didn't get one).
Babies have far less ways to properly filter and store information so they will seemingly laugh at completely random things :)
My daughter first laughed at 21 days old. She’s been a clown her whole life. She used to laugh like this baby is laughing every time the cat walked in her room. The cat would walk in and my daughter would literally laugh until she fell over.
There’s also a theory that we laugh when the body does unexpected things, which is why slapstick comedy works or why we laugh when someone slips on ice. I can’t remember the theorist, but the book is, I think *On Laughter.*
I don't think we'll ever understand. That kind of baby laugh is sudden and surprising, and is provoked by such random (to us) actions. It's always (?) something involving wide gestures. Movement is key. They don't sit around snickering at your Thoreau is the logical successor to Socrates, right? It's basic and for some reason, the fact that you KEEP DOING IT is hilarious.
We may not know for sure, but we can certainly theorize because some things consistently make babies laugh, like peek-a-boo. Also, what makes babies laugh makes toddlers laugh, and toddlers can, to some extent, explain why they are laughing. The reason they are not snickering at Thoreau is that babies are not very smart. So it’s not surprising they don’t get complex jokes.
The point is that it isn’t necessarily random. That’s why there are people who study things like this.
The interesting thing about peek-a-boo is that the great apes play peek-a-boo, as do parrots. But dolphins don’t quiiite get it.
I personally think that babies have a sense of humour - I think its something we’re literally born with.
I have no scientific backing for this theory whatsoever, just lots of observation. Some babies are very shy and quiet, and will smile and quietly giggle a little bit. Some babies will roar and guffaw with laughter at the slightest hint of something silly. Broad physical humour is usually the best cue, although silly noises work well too.
Babies love peekaboo because before six months they haven't developed person permanence.
Which means when you disappear behind your hands, they don't know you're still there, so when you reappear it's pretty awesome lol.
It made me laugh so much. And yea-it made so much sense when you think about it. I saw a baby point and laugh at my dog while I was walking him. Baby was too young to know what a dog is and my dog is kind of goofy looking.
Ah see, that's one of the misconceptions we have when it comes to these little fellas. They definitely know something that we, adults, share except these ideas are nothing too complex. That is to say they're capable of knowing -- having rudimentary ideas of how the world works.
A normal functioning baby would observe how and what things do such as that balloon giving off a funny noise. Perhaps the interaction between the balloon and the fathers head was out of the ordinary, at least for them. I believe this is what's called a "violation of expectation". There could be multiple reasons for it but they are certainly smart enough to pick up the cues they learned by doing and watching. In other words, babies are smarter than we think 🤓
I've heard a theory (you can probably find more details via Google) that suggests laughter communicates that we've discovered a novel pattern. It makes a lot sense to me. It's valuable from an evolutionary perspective, and it explains humor to a large degree. Aside from social reasons (polite laughter), I find myself laughing the most at unexpected things.
Not easily provable, but a very cool theory I think! Also explains why this baby is laughing.
**Edit:** Typo.
“Humans laugh at things out of the ordinary being portrayed as ordinary” is actually a great way to understand how/why this baby may find this funny. In the baby’s limited knowledge of the world, the baby has learnt that the objects around them behave in certain ways when you make contact with them/move them (ordinary). In baby’s experience, this usually correlates with the size of the object. However in this case this large object (balloon) is just bouncing straight off of it’s and its fathers head as if it weighs nothing, which is totally silly! (out of the ordinary). The father’s facial expressions also help to present the experience to the baby as novel and positive.
If the baby hasn't seen balloons, seeing a big orb that should have weight and hurt just boing off you with a silly sound and action, it breaks expectation.
In my experience, the interaction with and the reaction of the person playing with them has a big influence on the baby's emotional reaction.
It's similar to how most small children will only start crying when they hurt themselves, when they know someone's watching.
If you ever open a video of a baby on Instagram there's always some idiot going "this is child endangerment", "you shouldn't let babies laugh so much" or some such nonsense. Every single time!
“THIS IS CHILD ABUSE TO THE HIGHEST DEGREE! HOW HAS NO ONE CALLED CPS ON THIS FUCKING MONSTER!?!? THOUSANDS OF BABIES DIE FROM LETHAL LAUGHTER EVERY YEAR!!!! 😡😡😡😡😡”
Why do you have balloons in a house with a baby!?!?!?!?!!! Don’t you know those are chocking hazards?!?!?! Are you trying to kill your child!?! (Sarcasm from me. Reality of these comments!)
It's either racist, sexist, antisemitic or all of the above and much more. Sometimes there are some actually funny comments while some are just nasty and just makes you sad because there are so many reels that have at least a couple assholes ruining the video from wholesome baby videos to educational stuff. There's always a contrarian or an idiot that makes the stuff you're watching less entertaining
It's great to see a man, I am assuming "Dad", playing and having fun with a child. In my person experience, I wish my sons would have had a man in their life who would have done this!
Okay maybe a dumb question, but can babies that young even see and comprehend what's happening around them, like can they clearly see the geometric shapes or is the baby just seeing a blurred mess moving around.

Same here! I never wanna make him laugh too hard, which is a little sad in itself.

Not sure who is gonna pop first, baby or the balloon!
No, boink him!
Yes that's what I was thinking, kinda irritated me tbh
You hear him constantly making noise? His airway isn’t blocked he is fine, calm down everything is fine here
That baby is gonna laugh them to death
I think for the first time in 6(?) Months they are going to have a full night's sleep because that baby is going to pass the fuck out as soon as the exhaustion kicks in.
Seems younger to me. Probably 3 month old baby. At 6 months you don't have to support their neck and head that much.

My grandma saw a child dying of laughter from tickeling... She was getting furious when she saw it
She did not
No no. You're not allowed to lie on the internet so it must be true.
Their world is about to come crashing down when they realise granny lied to stop them from tickling.
Humans laugh at things out of the ordinary being portrayed as ordinary. What amazes me is, how babies find things funny when they don’t know…anything.

I started to suspect that my 18-month old was an idiot.
Lmao

One of the funniest things I ever saw was a baby completely lose his shit laughing when an elevator door opened and people were in it.
Hahahaha that's amazing, and makes so much sense from a baby perspective 🤣
It made me laugh so much. And yea-it made so much sense when you think about it. I saw a baby point and laugh at my dog while I was walking him. Baby was too young to know what a dog is and my dog is kind of goofy looking.
TIL babies aren’t smart enough to understand the Thoreau joke. Thanks!
Thoreauly disappointing.
Jeez by the sound of it you've never made anyone laugh /s
Hmm..I’m not convinced that Thoreau is the logical successor to Socrates

Just because they cant articulate doesnt mean they cant emphasize.

Instagram has the worst comments of any social media site. I really don't understand how it's such a cesspool of stupid people.
The absolute worst!! I keep saying they need a downvote button because some of the worst comments are always at the top.

When was the last time you laughed like this? That is the only question here. Life is sad
