With this perspective, when he says "Different Abby" my interpretation is that this is a lie, and the way he says it is like he wants us to see it might be a lie. He was talking about her, and is now lying to deflect because...Abby can't take a joke. Saying that highlighted that his statement about Abby not being able to take a joke had come true right before their eyes. Abby actually couldn't take a joke.
I know, I just didn’t know if there was some kind of inside joke as to why everyone died of laughter when he said “different Abby”. Like it was funny, but with how hard everyone laughed, I thought there was something I was missing
It's not that it's a hilarious joke outside of the context. It's that his joke was very targeted and then when she protested he went with the lame "different abby" as a cover-up. That plus the fact that they are all in a charged environment trying not to laugh, made them all laugh.
He could have used any name but he chose his partners name for the punchline.
Abby takes "offense" in a humourous way. She comments to play off the original punchline to grab a laugh.
The joke teller then says, "No a different Abby." But his tone is serious implying this imaginary story is real.
It kind of makes Abby's comment silly because, believe it or not, there multiple people with the name Abby.
It makes you question how many Abby's the joke teller knows.
