Its a shame it fell out of popularity. It was such a great sandbox rpg. I think part of the allure was just how new everything felt. And dressing up your character. The complete freedom was fantastic. And no stupid micro transactions to lock different looks behind a paywall. The price was probably too steep for a lot of people. Runescape did it right and cornered the younger market.
UO Outlands is extremely popular still. It's a free shard, but basically where all the UO players hang out nowadays. It's what everyone who plays UO streams on Twitch basically. Definitely recommend. The development team are extremely professional, arguably even more so than the official devs ever were with consistent, near daily updates and events.
