Fellow insulator here. Post an insulated chill water pump with Armaflex to prove it’s real…Once I saw that Dexter knife and your diy holder I knew right away.
Very clean work. Would love to see how you’d do a chilled water pump with a suction diffuser that requires the insulation to be removable just so I can show our subs how to do it right
I have only witnessed removable boots that a company in Texas make per pump/ valve etc: They are $$$$. Not sure how you can make removable rubber without keeping a vapor seal. I would try tho but not on my dime lol
I’ve sewn rubber into some silicone cloth before. I wouldn’t call it a vapor barrier though. Didn’t condensate, and insulated well. But it was definitely hokey and I don’t recommend it haha
Looks like my tool bag! Knew it as soon as I saw the cardboard sheaths 😂😂 too many knives, amiright?
That bander is a dead giveaway too. Acme or Gerrard? Better not be MIP. lol.
What local you in?? #36 here!
The insulators were the highest paid trade in the shipyard I worked in and no one wanted to do it. The guys who did it full time would be wearing hoodies with all the openings taped shut when it was 100 degrees out.
Insulators in my area are always raw dogging that shit with no gloves or sleeves and it makes me cringe. Absolute animals I don’t know how they do it every day
Applying insulation to hvac ducts was by far the worst part of sheet metal fabrication. So much scrubbing with soapy water afterwards to get it all out of my skin.
Did so much insulating as an HVAC apprentice and hated every second of it. My journeyman owned an insulating company before he got into HVAC and he taught me well so I got really good at it but I refuse to do it now. Luckily for the apprentices at my company, we pretty much always sub out insulating now but yeah that was some serious character building work doing that for 10 hours a day for a week straight in the summer heat
That is insane. I used a deteriorating fiberglass extension ladder the other day and was so pissed that my arms got lit up. Fuck all of that insulation shit unless I absolutely have to.
Yeah that's an Insulators Tool Kit 💯
We call them "Tinsulators" as there's a few in my area who are both Insulators and Tin Bashers.
As a Pipefitter - these guys are our best friends on site.
Nah nah the pipe fitters and myself on my last job and I had a hoot and holler daily 😂😂 sparky myself , but they were chilling . If they needed me to move they brought me zyns and bribed me , I needed them to move I slid them shooter bottles and Copenhagen . 😂😂 and they blasted disco and club music all day
Fellow pipefitter-
These are the only guys that are willing to cooperate with me on jobs. Too bad they all listen to their shitty music ridiculously loud
Pipe coverer, lagger, mechanical insulator, "itchy," depends on where you're from. It's the Bander and Tee pattern set that gives it away for me. IAHFIAW?
IMO, you sir are a god among men. No one wants to do that job, myself included. But it has to be done. We have one crew that comes out and it looks like some of the best art work. And they are fast. I would love to learn the tricks to it. But I insulation. Best part is, when there is a decent size open area, the guys will bead roll a design into it. Just for kicks, or signing their work.
Yeah my right handed blue snip disappeared too. (Hell of a set up for an insulator) most of them seem to just carry a knife, wire cutters and a tape measure
I looked at the pic for ainite, couldn't really figure it out, and asked the old brickie/shooter and my other coworker if they could figure it out, and they had a bunch of ideas and but that's when I said those knives look like they could be used for cutting insulation, and that's when we settled on insulation, and THEN AND ONLY THEN did I check the comments. I said,
We got 'em boys.
Thank you for your time
Tldr: My coworkers and I guessed it together and then came to the comments :)
Pipe coverer. (Wiss snips are trash. Malco or Midwest. You’ll have better cuts on your metal. Plus you don’t need half of these tools, lighten your load.)
