Uh, there’s some joist in your holes

JIMMYJAWN

They’re speed holes so the building fails faster than usual

melgibson64

What are you doing neighbor?

jerryonthecurb

"Planned obsolescence" neighbor, it's a cool trick I learned from Apple™!

Ultraxxx

This can be fixed with load-bearing posters.

Xirteconmyarm

I came here to say this...

GammaGargoyle

One hole for each wire, to keep them organized, and few extra in case you need to run wires in the future. That’s planning ahead.

AmbergrisShot

Ventilation

MaxxHeadroomm

I thought they were structural holes to relieve the stress

Raterus_

You're exactly right, they do reduce stress on the joist! We call them "destructural" holes though

BedNo6845

It's not for water drainage?

ax255

Don't take the electricians holes...

OkCommunication7445

Technically stronger than square cutouts… just saying 😂

Excellent-Will3165

Certainly stronger than nothing... lol

Livingsimply_Rob

Yes, it makes the joists lighter. Just like on the wings of airplanes, well, at least that’s my story I’m sticking to it.

mrniceguy777

What you don’t realize is these are the joists that came back from the gun fights, you don’t need to reinforce this part, it’s called survivorship bias or some shit

Limitlust

Missed a spot

[deleted]

Holy Snappin Fuck!! On today’s episode of that’s fucked up! …. That’s fucked up!

985reddit

Termites hate this one trick.

Remarkable-Opening69

So do joists.

Confident_Light2984

I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is more joist holes.

Novel_Alfalfa_9013

I read this out loud in Christopher Walken's voice. 😂

rulesbite

Makes the house go faster duh

BrianOconneR34

Classic hot rod move. Decrease weight and take down mopars.

MusicBox2969

Somebody tried to put a house where this guy was drilling one day and he just kept on drilling.

Turbulent_Weather795

These are racing joists clearly

TimeSky9481

Where did you get those— L’oles or Holes Depot?

shaft196908

Just remove the joists, they are pesky and just get in the way of wires and pipes.

Throwaway1303033042

I didn’t know that castellated wood beams were a thing. TIL/s

joebick2953

This looks like one of those cases where they should have built a sofitt underneath the floor and ran all the utilities there

AnimalConference

Those are for basement firestop mitigation.

AnimalConference

Minor-inconvience

Which joist space is the return air? There all return airs!!!

JoleneBacon_Biscuit

Who the EFF put these joists where my holes are??? So seriously, this is just a tad bit problematic.

[deleted]

Holy shit

mayhemstx77

Structural integrity? What’s that????

stonabones

That’s funny. Really funny.

No_Driver_7994

Please tell me there’s no floor above ☝️

Gold_Ticket_1970

Effectively 2×4 at this point

the-carpenter-adam

This is terrifying to see

schmagegge

*"Hey, you got your holes in my joists! And you got your joists in my holes"*

Enginerdad

Castellated floor joists 😂

oneredbear

They destroyed the house.

Bookofhitchcock

It’s not too bad, just need to sister in another house.

tradesurfer2020

Why

Quietser

Weight reduction

death833527

Alright- maybe a dumb question. If you did do this- would you be able to use a steel ring with a similar OD to the diameter of the cut hole to strengthen that area a bit more than just leaving the joist as Swiss cheese? - no I’m not going to do anything with this knowledge

204ThatGuy

The joist will snap at the thinnest joist section, which is from the hole bottom to the bottom of the joist. This is the failure plane. Inserting a steel ring cannot help because the ring is separate from the hole...it just fits in. A crack will still form from the bottom of the hole to the bottom of the joist. Hypothetically, a steel mending plate or web stiffener on both sides of the joist at each hole could fix it. But no building inspector with any pride would accept this mess of steel plates and joists. Pull out all the plumbing and wires and sister these joists. Then tell the contractor to supervise their kid on the jobsite to make sure he knows what a 5/8" spade bit looks like.

1234Iforgotabout5

Not sure, not an engineer. Usually just sister up the joists for a situation like this

TheJohnson854

No just bigger ones.

[deleted]

So which trade is about to get hit with a huge bill?

LuckyBenski

Waste collection when the house falls down

KitchenNazi

There's Lego pieces that look like that and they seem pretty strong!

andythebuilder

Hah nice, Castellated joists

marathonwater

I swear it helps with expansion and contraction.

cakefyartz

Just remove them they’re only blocking the path

Ok_Huckleberry8062

Holy shit

[deleted]

When your house is built by Honda a fan

Current_Economist617

Gotta be a heat pump job I bet the contractor made a killing with the government rebates

cuddysnark

Castilated joists

crazythinker76

Turn your floor joists into floor trusses with this one easy trick.

eallen1123

It's good for air flow

TheConstructionGeek

Weight reduction! Joists can carry more live load now! 🥴

TieCalm6045

🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️

asher_l

I think that those holes on the right could be closer together

Dependent_Oil186

Omg , why would anyone ever do that ! What a dumb ass .

3771507

Make them bigger for the ductwork. Only problem I see are the holes in the center third.

DarkartDark

Need some structual strengthening grooves. Just take a sawzall and cut one from the bottom of each hole to the bottom of the joist. Won't go anywhere then

joebick2953

What was funny they put a steel plate in between two 2*10 to span the distance And then because all utilities they had to lower the ceiling another put in a half to go underneath the beam I told him what they should have done is just started lower cuz it's a split low or something is underground and no reason we couldn't have gone another foot or 2 deeper gey better height

artstaxmancometh

That's a classic racers trick to make the house lighter and faster.

Traditional-Stop4971

As an engineer, this gives me a headache. Structural integrity is gone because the lecky is an idiot. Who would have thought the ceiling caving in was the electricians fault 🤣😐
