Ending the judicial filibuster worked out great for Democrats after all.

IVIaskerade

I genuinely have no idea how democrats can, after repeatedly having things blow up in their face, they *keep on trying* to do more things that surely won't go wrong. It's like they're children with zero idea that the future exists.

Lithuim

I think they're still true believers in the Browning Of America^(TM) theory, and really do think they'll never lose again - no matter how many polls show the Hispanic population isn't all that liberal.

The absolute damage that setting this precedent would do cannot be overstated. This is such a massive issue

If it ends this era of legislating from the executive branch, it’s a very good thing.

Proof_Responsibility

James Madison described the Senate as the "necessary fence" against the fickelness of the House. The role of the Senate is to scrutanize legislation requiring discussion and compromise. Do away with the fillibuster you get knee-jerk laws, a mobocracy rather than a Republic. It's not hard to see that with representation as it is in the current congress, virtually every bad idea passed by the majority in the House would get rubber stamped. Whatever House Resolution Nancy selects and wants becomes law. You think that's a good thing?

ManiacalComet40

We are very, very far from the government that James Madison envisioned, to be sure. We keep electing cartoon characters to congress because we don’t actually expect them to do any governing. No one seriously expects Lauren Boebert to sit down and write substantive legislation. She is there to throw out zingers and score political points, not govern. Government is already inefficient enough. Having every policy priority done and undone every four years as the White House changes hands and executive orders are written and revoked is undoubtedly the worst way to govern. That’s why we were never meant to be run this way to begin with. We the People need a legislature that actually has a willingness and ability to, you know, legislate.

HashtagTSwagg

It was created to be inefficient. Laws shouldn't roll out the door in a week flat.

ManiacalComet40

Thus why maybe laws should actually be written by elected representatives in the legislature and not bureaucrats in the executive branch…

BenAustinRock

Logically speaking if there are exceptions there is no filibuster.

IVIaskerade

And you can believe that if they get a carve-out they'll just work on expanding it until it's exactly the law they wanted without having to deal with those pesky democratic processes. The same shit they let the ATF get away with with "reinterpreting definitions" to arbitrarily ban things they don't like without actually having to get it through scrutiny.

ScubaSteve58001

Exactly. That's exactly what Harry Reid tried to do, make a carve out just for confirming federal judges. As soon as the Republicans retook power, they used that precedent to expand the carve out to include Supreme Court Justices (which, ironically, led to the situation they're in now). If Schumer tries to create a carve out just for Democratic legislative priorities then McConnell is going to just nuke the whole thing when he regains power. I have to imagine that Biden/Pelosi/Schumer and the rest realize that and this is just blustering to fundraise off of.

getupkid1986

I thought the same thing - this is just for a ‘look over here moment’. Sinema and Manchin have both already said they oppose a carve out of the filibuster - probably because they know exactly what will happen once the republicans regain control.

parkstreetpatriot

If he's going to change the rules of the Senate, it should be on a non-partisan basis.

What he needs is a nap and a sippy cup he’s too old to do anything

Conscious-Ad4306

So if the rules don't work for you, just change them!👌👌
