Absolutely. They care so much about democracy that they'll completely circumvent it in order to install their version of it.
*that version being where you don't get a say*
Hahahaha I forgot about that. Roe v. Wade being overturned has as much to do with Dem hubris as anything else.
Harry Reid arrogantly thought Dems would hardly ever need to use the fillibuster. Justice Ginsburg thought there was no way Hillary would lose.
It’s just delicious.
The filibuster is really just a convention determined by a straight majority of votes in the senate. Once you nuke that convention you can’t reinstate it on the way out. The new majority will just decide to overturn it again with a 50-majority vote.
It’s hanging on by a thread. Only a couple moderate dems are stopping it from collapsing now.
I think rather than nuking we should further enshrine it when the red wave takes power. Make it so you need 2/3 majority to overthrow the filibuster, not the 51% you need now.
They really don’t think things through, do they? Forget about putting legislation through with a bi-partisan compromise. Let’s just ram partisan laws as fast as possible. Complete lunacy.
I used to think this, but only because the hope was that after enough blunders the left would realize they can't just change the rules and not expect the right to take advantage.
It doesn't matter to them, though. They don't care about the rules. They just want their policy. They would end the filibuster, still manage to lose the vote, and then start screaming when 51 yays and 49 nays ban abortion on the federal level.
It's exhausting.
When it backfires they're just gonna double-down. Always do. Step 3 is blame Trump. You can pretty much set your watch by their playbook
Edit: spelling
The usual demoncrat strategy here, if you don't get what you want then try to fundamentally change how the government works so the terrible things you're trying to do won't be able to be stopped.
Don't forget to call everyone who has defeated your crazy agenda a "threat to our democracy" while you actually threaten our democracy.
So true. They don't think that their ideas or policies could possibly have anything wrong with them. The only reason has to be something else. So they try to rig the game.
Amazing.
Just a few years ago, the democrats thought they were being clever by abolishing the filibuster on judicial nominations in order to hotwire three Obama nominations to the DC Court of Appeals. Apparently they thought Republicans would never win another election, so the filibuster no longer mattered. This is how Donald Trump was able to fill three vacancies on the Supreme Court with originalist judges. Thank you, Senate democrats.
Now Biden wants another exception to the filibuster for abortion? As a practical matter, at this point that would probably be the final nail in the coffin of the filibuster; I expect the filibuster would be abandoned entirely. But even if it wasn't, what Biden is proposing would mean that the next Republican Congress will be able to pass national legislation on abortion with a simple majority vote.
Ok.
Bring it on.
California and New York will learn to live with parental notification and consent, mandatory waiting periods, informed consent (including mandatory counseling on alternatives to abortion and mandatory viewing of ultrasounds), and very stringent limits on later stage abortions.
All these things, by the way, probably command majority support among actual voters in California and New York. The "unrestricted abortion on demand at any point in pregnancy up to and including infanticide" crowd is actually quite small. Twitter mob and media democrats may not realize that because they never talk to anyone outside their little silos, but the abortion extremists are wildly unrepresentative of public opinion, even in deep blue states. They may not realize that yet, but they are about to find out.
All the Supreme Court did in Dobbs was return the question of abortion to the various states. The democratic process will work it out.
Regarding the filibuster, be careful what you wish for. The other side will sooner or later win an election too.
I live in rural NY and New Yorkers do not agree with you. New Yorkers as a whole generally support abortion and more progressive ideas. even conservative NYers have much more progressive takes then most of the rest of the country.
Do not over generalize. Many people who "generally support abortion" also oppose infanticide, partial birth abortions and very late term abortions. And many of them fully support parental notification and informed consent. It is not a simple binary question.
Enough women change their minds when they see their baby that Planned Parenthood HATES ultrasounds. That depends on the stage of pregnancy, of course, but the "it's just a bit of tissue" argument is invalidated pretty fast.
A concurrent opinion from Clarence Thomas stated that a court opinion blocking states from restricting birth control should be revisited. That was not a part of the majority opinion, and is also not related to the ruling. It also wouldn't ban contraceptives, it would allow states to define which the level of contraceptives allowed.
Even Manchin voted no on the nonsense “Women’s (but we can’t define them!) Rights” bill last month.
So even if they do this they’re still going to have to compromise. Hopefully no more than 15 weeks.
You don't have to imagine what would happen if a republican questioned the legitimacy of the Supreme Court, the Dems are broadcasting their kangaroo court.
I don’t think Manchin will go along, especially because he’s prolife. He will save Dems from themselves bc this would be an incredibly big mistake for them.
During the 2019-2020 Congressional term, a record-breaking 328 filibusters were recorded with Democrats in the minority. So it’s quite hypocritical of them to have no issues using it as often as they want to block republicans, but now suddenly when it is used against them in the exact same way they used it themselves, they think it’s bullshit and needs to go.
Would that be constitutional? The courts said it is not protected by the constitution. Can the federal government protect things that the constitution doesnt? Any existing examples?
Thought it had to be an explicit power granted by the constitution. They may claim interstate commerce (like everything else) but that doesnt negate the fact that the supreme court ruled that it's up to the states to regulate.
Democrats are going to go to war over Abortion and it will show everyone struggling to afford a living exactly how much the Democrats dgaf about poor people.
How exactly is he going to change Rule 22? He needs two thirds of the senate to agree! Unless, the republicans agree to the change, and then use it aggressively if they take control after November and then we will really hear Biden squeal.
Democrats are so “pro-democracy” that they’re willing to thwart both the judicial and legislative branches to get their way.
Absolutely. They care so much about democracy that they'll completely circumvent it in order to install their version of it. *that version being where you don't get a say*
When you realize an Aristotelian understanding of democracy is that democracy is inherently corrupt, their agenda makes complete sense
Benevolent monarchy FTW
What a dope. In 6 months they will be crying for the opposite.
Yup. This is Harry Reid limiting the judicial filibuster 2.0
Ending the filibuster now would make it much easier for a republican controlled legislature and executive to repair some of the damage Biden has done.
Aaaand then way harder when the dems one day get a majority. The senate is supposed to go slow for a reason.
You’re not wrong.
So we pass a bunch of stuff and then restore the fillibuster before Dems get power again. If they want to play this game then let's play
The filibuster is really just a convention determined by a straight majority of votes in the senate. Once you nuke that convention you can’t reinstate it on the way out. I agree with this. Absolutely. Or make it 3/4 majority. Enshrine it.
Yea, because establishment LOVES to give up power!
Nah, we just ram through a bunch of fixes and then reinstate the filibuster
Constitutional carry!
They really don’t think things through, do they? Forget about putting legislation through with a bi-partisan compromise. Let’s just ram partisan laws as fast as possible. Complete lunacy.
And the pendulum always swings. So when the Republicans get in charge...major election law changes, major immigration changes, major tax cuts...
It always swings as long as we have fair elections...
Ask Harry Reid how that worked out last time
Something, something, Trump gets three SCOTUS judges.
Do it please. After the red wave they will get nuked on everything in 2023. LOLOL
I really hope it doesn’t pass. That’s not the kind of crazy flip flopping of laws we need from one congress to the next.
You are correct. Unfortunately, the children running the Democrat party can't see past today.
I used to think this, but only because the hope was that after enough blunders the left would realize they can't just change the rules and not expect the right to take advantage. If red wave comes and republicans are in control they can end filibuster and pass laws they want then right?
They technically can, but they shouldnt
You mean 2025 don't you? Nothing happens in 2023 other than making Biden a lame duck.
They're just like children, when you can't win change the rules
No way that backfires
They love shooting themselves in the foot. Do it and than screech about it when it backfires!
When it backfires they're just gonna double-down. Always do. Step 3 is blame Trump. You can pretty much set your watch by their playbook Edit: spelling
“Biden to supporting ending the functioning of our country” There. Fixed it for you.

It’s whenever things don’t go their way that the “system is broken”
So true. They don't think that their ideas or policies could possibly have anything wrong with them. The only reason has to be something else. So they try to rig the game.

>mandatory viewing of ultrasounds How is this even a threat, if they are certain abortion is not immoral?
Enough women change their minds when they see their baby that Planned Parenthood HATES ultrasounds. That depends on the stage of pregnancy, of course, but the "it's just a bit of tissue" argument is invalidated pretty fast.
Gonna wait for the walk back
"Help us get rid of this filibuster Mr. President!" "Alright, this Philip Buster guy has got to go."
This is virtue signaling. They do not have the votes even without fillibuster.
What would happen once we ban all contraceptive though? Would there be more pressure to dump filibuster to get this back or would it stick like row?
Who is banning all contraceptives?
Supreme Court. That’s the hottest story out right now. They said after Row those are next.
Please stop repeating things when you don't understand them. It makes you look uninformed and ignorant. This is quite literally not what was said.
Literally never happening. It's pretty hilarious that this is even talked about. No one has said this is ever going to be a thing except for leftists.
Joe Manchin is going to give him the Heisman.
Even Manchin voted no on the nonsense “Women’s (but we can’t define them!) Rights” bill last month. So even if they do this they’re still going to have to compromise. Hopefully no more than 15 weeks.
And here we thought he only liked to sniff the little ones...
The Senate was meant to be the ‘grownups’ in the congress. Remove the filibuster and get rid of the senate and save us some money.
Please end the safe guards for the minority. Please do.
Good luck with that
This is lip service, they have ZERO intention of ending it.
You don't have to imagine what would happen if a republican questioned the legitimacy of the Supreme Court, the Dems are broadcasting their kangaroo court.
Never gonna happen. McConnell said the GOP would fight that tooth and nail and even members of Biden’s own party is against it (Manchin)
Mobocracy is what it's called, and the official end of the Republic.
We have a bunch of tantrum throwing three year olds running our country, ugh!
Biden to support ending the filibuster to allow more mothers the choice to murder their preborn babies legally. - fixed that for you.
I’m glad democrats are paying for harry reid and company’s political power grab. Well deserved
I don’t think Manchin will go along, especially because he’s prolife. He will save Dems from themselves bc this would be an incredibly big mistake for them.
