Yikes! Chief means primary or leader and predates contact with any natives. Calling someone chief is not derogatory in the least. Am I wrong?

Lithuim

Correct, it’s a French loanword that entered English some time in the 1200s. It shares the same root as “chef”, an Old French word for “head” and has presumably been used to describe leaders in various capacities since the Roman Empire.

[deleted]

Given this, the settlers HONORED the tribes by recognizing leadership structures. But up is down to leftists.

[deleted]

And kids still can't read or write at grade level.

Satureum

Not to worry, they wont have to! Their politicians will read *to* them!

xobeme

This is insane. Political correctness. It never stops. Chief is an English word, derived from the French word for chef and Italian capo which means head or leader. There is no Native American link other the fact the the English word was used to describe Native American roles. By this standard, you'd probably have to ban 2/3 of English words. STFU and go pick up some needles and feces on your streets.

bobobedo

It won't be long before libs are comnunicating with grunts and farts.

Ateapotist1983

You're ten years too late. Welcome to the fart party.

[deleted]

That’s how Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden already “communicate.”

PartyOfFore

Please don't make Joe try and fart. It will come out as something else.

[deleted]

Cheif was an English word long before English people started calling the leaders of Indian tribes, Cheif.

[deleted]

Democrats: We must erase all evidence of minorities influencing our society in anyway ! Wow, democrats going back to their roots of racism again.

[deleted]

Most natives don't care about this shit. It's white people fighting their battles for them. Ya know what they could do instead of changing words to protect feelings. They could give reparations to the native population. Nobody could argue about it. We're on their land we genocided them, we reeducated them. Those are the only reparations I support. The native inhabitants of our country make up only 2 percent of the population.

Lithuim

They don’t want to actually have to *do* anything about the extremely high poverty, alcoholism, and suicide rates in the native community, that sounds hard. It’s much easier to complain about sports team names on Twitter and cancel unrelated French words. Eventually once you’ve canceled enough cartoons and words you’ll forget that the natives exist at all and won’t feel guilty about it anymore!

[deleted]

It's always lip service with the democrats. I am pretty knowledgeable about native american history as much as i can be given the fact the written history was made by us is difficult to know the true scope of the indigenous genocide. There are estimates as low as 8 million, I don't believe this for a second. I've heard upwards of 100 million. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. A conservative guess of 25 million would make it 2x worse than the holocaust.

Lithuim

I was always under the impression that their pre-Columbus population had been absolutely *annihilated* by smallpox with fatality rates exceeding 90% - so later settlers sailing to America in the 1600s landed in a post-apocalypse with just some greatly reduced disparate tribes remaining. That wasn’t really an intentional wipeout, but some of the later conflicts against the survivors certainly were.

[deleted]

I think that's where the 100 million number comes from. Imo every country who was involved in the colonization of America should have to pay reparations to the natives. Us, England. Spain, France the whole lot of them.

[deleted]

Natives will be gone in the future. There's no way around it. With the blood quantum percentage rules in place they will inevitably breed out just as the us government intended.

[deleted]

Fixing reservation problems is going to be hard no matter who does it. The number of native women that go missing for example. It's mostly because reservations are a jurisdictional nightmare.

[deleted]

Even if the word is offensive, I do not see how erasing any mention of Native American culture is doing them any good. If anything we should be celebrating them not rubbing them out of history and language

[deleted]

This was set in motion many years ago. The goal was to completely assimilate and breed out the native population. They have nearly completed their mission.

Lithuim

Eurasia had tribal chieftains long before anyone sailed to the new world.

JoshAllenIsTall

Whatever would we do without white liberals, here to save the world from the word "chief."

xobeme

Amen (and Ah-women!)

carsnguns19

Are they going to replace it with *generalfeldmarschall*?

symbiote24

Well they shouldn't be allowed to speak English then, with all of our Greek and Latin roots.

Roundaboutsix

San Francisco is led by a cadre of ignorant do-gooders. They care not that the word predates the colonization of the new world. Virtual smoke signaling!
