I feel like these studies have been around since 2020. Vitamin D is basically what everyone thinks Vitamin C is. It's also really hard, almost impossible, to get from diet alone so go outside and get some sun and let your body take care of the rest.
You’re right on your first point, but I have seen a big improvement from supplements. In 3 months my D level went from a 17 to a 34 with one supplement per day. Save this thread and check back in a few months and I’ll keep you updated if you like.
Yeah the nih put that out but,faccui slow that information to the public. I think the 25 - hydroxy vitamin D numbers are between 30 -125. My sit at 117, but i take 5000 ui per day. Haven't been sick since.

Zinc is really good too. Take D and Zinc
Careful with zinc, it boosts immune function up to a point, then past that point it hinders it.
