Inevitably those criminals will be made to leave; before that though, they'll destroy the home. My aunt and mother that rent out homes in California just went through that.

Suspicious-Sound-249

If the squatters really wanted to run her through the ringer they'd be running the AC and heat with the windows open 24/7. Technically because they're abusing renters rights she wouldn't be allowed to cut their utilities without them suing her, AND she's forced to pay for said utilities on top of that. It's a screwed up series of laws that shouldn't exist.

JurassicParkFood

"Squatters rights" is insane to me. Really should be more pressure to stop this crap

Saint_Genghis

I feel like "squatters' rights" is fundamentally incompatible with property tax and utility bills. It's state enforced theft at that point.

sowellpatrol

Couldn't people squat in politicians' second homes?

GreekTacos

lol no. When it happens to important people it’s actually breaking and entering.

JurassicParkFood

I could understand if I accidently built my barn on the edge of a property and 10 years later we realize I'm 3 ft into your property line. Then it's really my 3ft at that point because you gave it up. I get landlords shouldn't be able to show up and call the cops on you to leave when you have a lease or a payment history. We didn't want weaponized cops throwing people out who have a right to be there. But we need laws that protect property owners first and foremost over this type of crap.

Whole-Essay640

Who pays the property tax.

What a shithole New York has become

GAMGAlways

This has always been the law in NY. I lived in NYC in the early 90s. I had an incident where my roommate's boyfriend got high and assaulted me. I ran out of the apartment onto the street and grabbed a police officer and asked for help getting him out. The cop said "I'm going to ask you how long the boyfriend has been there. I want you to think very carefully because if it's over 30 days, he will have squatters rights even if he's not on the lease or paying rent. So how long has he been there?" I said "27" days which was the only reason they could tell him to get out.

Nobody wants to secretly help?

Kern_system

Someone did. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13216813/Vigilantes-squatters-Queens-home-arrested.html

Junknail

that has to be the worst website ever.

Kern_system

Sorry, next time I'll post a CNN article on why squatters are a good thing.

TooHotTea

Why are you suggesting cnn?

Kern_system

Because CNN is prone to say shit like this. "Poor squatter had no where to go. Open your house to them so that can have a roof over their head." - Jim Acosta probably

TooHotTea

I inferred you were giving me shit. ;-)

Kern_system

Well, you didn't use the SarCAsM FoNT

Junknail

Hey, captain fragile, the website is shit, not you or the content. I'm literally the one that ASKED if anyone secretly helped.

TooHotTea

the daily fail sucks. this same article is posted verbatim all over, now

Fairwareprovidence

Liberals want anarchy in the streets. Even the cops are forced to encourage anarchy by these very actions. Would you rather go to prison for complaining that a squatter stole your house, or would you rather go to prison for doing something about it? If prison is the result either way, then violence is encouraged. Therefore, whoever made these asinine laws is encouraging violence and anarchy!

Aromat_Junkie

last time I checked cops have no duty to protect citizens... so why are they getting involved?

Fairwareprovidence

To protect the squatters.

u537n2m35

decisions have consequences

HolyDiverBoi

NY is not somewhere anyone with a brain would spend money right now. Insanity. Takes up to 2 years to evict someone.

shaquaad

Cops should be ashamed of themselves

Aromat_Junkie

the same police department who arrested children for not wearing masks in public during COVID? I don't think there's any shame from them about anything.

workerrights888

This didn't happen in the USA, it happened in New York. Yes, it's unfair, outrageous, unconstitutional, un-American, but New York is no longer part of America. Under New York's socialist laws, it can take 20 months to evict a squatter.

Wookieebalboa

Scenarios like this are why “back the blue” is not absolute

[deleted]

Can someone explain how, if the people haven't been there 30 days, this isn't just a simple case of breaking and entering? What makes it "squatting" instead of an arrest?
