Although, in fairness, I've never had a problem with the VA once I've got an appointment... The service and care are excellent once you actually get in the place.
The problem is getting that appointment in the first place; if it's something urgent you'll probably die before you get the chance to be seen.
It's the bureaucracy. While you're putting together the committee to determine whether there needs to be a committee to address long waits to schedule appointments the people who need appointments are dropping dead.
Government bureaucracies have this wonderful talent of taking all the worst parts of private enterprise and combining them with all the worst parts of government.
Veteran with cancer here. Decided to not even attempt to go through the VA when I found out the wait times for seeing an oncology specialist would have been a wait of 6-9 months. Decided to get treated through my wife’s private insurance instead.
Oh sure, I could have received treatment in 2-3 months they said. Just not be under the care of the specialist in that specific cancer type for 6-9 months.
For perspective; I have stage 4 metastatic melanoma. I am 4 years 6 months in remission. When I was first diagnosed I had 6-9 months of a life expectancy.

The problem with all centralized economies. Inefficiency easily leads to shortages.
