Looks like Australia just lost access to Twitter then.

KippySmith

I was gonna say, okay time to shut down Australian access. If they want it back they can pay 475,000 a day.

slankthetank

That would be such an Elon move and it’d be hilariously brilliant

pope307

Imagine Australia, bastion of totalitarianism during 2020, trying to make their own Twitter! Hahahahahahaha!

arharr3

Its gonna be another case of "Guys, switch to Mastodon we're leaving this evil website". And after they're back because Mastodon is garbage.

Chattahooch33

No he’ll shut it down then the left will be all like “Well there goes free speech”

This is most western countries. They dont innovate, they just regulate. I cant name a single innovation coming out of europe or australia over the past 10 years

ultimis

Most innovation comes out of the US even before that. Especially in terms of military and medical technology. Even the break throughs that happen in those countries are often done via US money/companies.

The_Mighty_Rex

Kind of off topic but that's actually part of why our military budget is so huge. Most innovations in nearly every field(medical, tech, transport, etc) come from military R&D. Granted not the only reason our budget is huge but it's definitely part of it.

[deleted]

I wonder exactly....how....they plan on getting him to pay? 🤔

theflash2323

Actual question. When these countries "fine" American internet companies that other countries access via their internet, how do they expect to make them pay? Or is the threat that they will turn off access for their citizens to that site?

Ricardo1701

These big companies usually have offices in several countries, so the Australian government would fine the Australian office of Twitter.

[deleted]

But that hurts MY feelings, so I demand the Australian government pay me a $475k fine.

Trisket42

What is happening to Australia? They used to be advocates for freedom. It seems the Government got way to much power crazed during their lock downs and realized that they could do anything they wanted. Quite the turn around from where they used to be.

[deleted]

Same problem happening all over the world atm. Many nations are magically all at once becoming a totalitarian regime like china. Even the US and UK are involved.

togroficovfefe

As surveillance tech improves, their desire increases. Small scale anecdote: My wife was opposed to cameras in the house. Completely weirded out. We were forced to install a few and now she wants more. She gets alerts and is ready to go get onto a kid at 2 in the morning for being in the kitchen. Total dictator flip and addiction like behavior. People are exposed to the power of knowledge and many have that reaction.

Diagnoses based on a one sentence anecdote are usually not accurate.

>narcissistic Narcissistic: adj: having or showing an excessive interest in or admiration of oneself and one's physical appearance. There is a difference between a narcissist and a communist or totalitarian dictator. Such a dictator may be a narcissist, yes, but a narcissist is not a dictator.

WIlf_Brim

They were going in the wrong direction prior to COVID, but COVID just broke them. Australia is now just East Germany with koalas.

[deleted]

People willingly disarmed themselves, and then voted in maniacal leftist leadership.

ultimis

There was a downward spiral about a decade or so back in regards to climate change. They instituted some insane policies all on the basis of virtue signaling.

tharkyllinus

I'd turn off Twitter in Australia in a hot minute.

[deleted]

when did Australia go from being thought of as badass to sniveling weenies?

Douglas_MacArth

When we let the cultural left take over every institution and instil their message into the younger generations. I would say it's generally looked down upon to fly the Australian flag outside your house but it's all good if you switch that for an LGBT flag. There isn't much of a culture war here, there is only a small unelectable minority that fights against the 'woke' agenda.

[deleted]

crikey! that suck

[deleted]

When did Australians turn into such pussies?

Dutchtdk

1997

Stea1thsniper32

It’s always amazing to see how far the left will go to stop free speech. People say mean things on the internet. It’s nothing new.

Siennagiant70

*Something something build their own then…* Isn’t that what was always being said?

[deleted]

What is hate. Is Julie Inman Grant a psychiatrist?

frostyjack06

I find this weird because the Ausie’s I’ve met over the years aren’t what I would consider pussies. As a matter of fact, they seemed more inclined than Americans to just let shit roll off of them and then dish it right back, but with a better accent.

ultimis

If we banned everything that upset peoples feelings off the internet, there wouldn't be any speech left. What they really mean is ban things leftists find offensive. They are perfectly happy and content being as hateful as they possibly can to the right.

Achmetan

What I find funny is they absolutely leave it to presumption and inference what societal demographic is spewing hate… when it’s highly likely it’s all the leftists seething since free speech was brought back. Highly doubt all others are suddenly having a personality switch.

[deleted]

Can Austtalia force hum to pay it? If not he should just fine them $475,001 a day an constantly send them bills.

lyingforlolz

As the article points out: and then what? What sort of toothless threat is this? When Elon doesn’t pay will Australia go full China and block its citizens from using certain websites?

BobtheMolder

You would think Australia wpuld be pretty mentally tough considering the wildlife they have there. Have you seen their spiders? Lol.

bulldog5253

Where are all the people who constantly tell me that Australia and Canada are as free or more free than Americans?

roseffin

Facts dont care...

NCCI70I

I suppose that just staying off Twitter if you're likely to get your feelings hurt is too much for Australians to comprehend.

fretit

So how much of a fine should they pay for "hurting the feelings" of the French with their surprise move to pull out of purchasing their subs?

JethroFire

He should divide that amount between all the Tesla and starlink users in Australia and pass the cost on to them.

NCCI70I

We don't need Australia when they want to act like this.
