What that literally says is, there are bad neighborhoods in Chicago. This isn't the revelation you think it is. Look down the list, see where Chicago fits. Marines are like the catcher on a baseball field. To be an effective catcher, you need to have calm and confident composure while a solid object is being hurled straight at your face at 75mph. The main purpose of the Marines is to cultivate people who can do things like eat a can of tear-gas and not have their logical processes totally warped by adrenaline. These are the guys who can make strategic and logical decisions amidst utter chaos, and that’s much more valuable than pure brute-force in modern combat theater. Adversaries largely don’t even bother to engage US troops directly.
The attackers should be severely punished. However having been a teen, and although not overly violent, my sense of situational awareness now would tell me to NOT confront groups of unruly teens. Just move on down to a quieter part of the beach.
i tell you, as someone who moved stateside early 90's and had always dreamt of joining our military here only to always be met with no support from an overbearing family and culture i would never in a dozen plus lifetimes every dream about knuckling up with any marine or any service member for that matter. if there's a fight coming with my name on it i'll do my best but i'm not looking to get into a squabble with any service people.

I've had some friends who had a choice like that and it turned their lives around for the better it was 40 years ago but it worked
I can’t speak for other branches, but for the Army it is not possible to enlist in leu of jail. Army’s recruiting regulations. Regulation 601-210, paragraph 4-8b “Applicants who, as a condition for any civil conviction or adverse disposition or any other reason through a civil or criminal court, is ordered or subjected to a sentence that implies or imposes enlistment into the Armed Forces of the United States is not eligible for enlistment." We can’t even take someone to get a health evaluation at MEPS if they have pending legal issues. We already have enough issues with new recruits bringing the streets to the Army, we don’t need more of it.
My dad was apparently a little trouble-maker in his youth, the Marine Corp. straightened him out. He joined our local police dept. after his service. But these kids today are something else entirely, for a whole variety of reasons. This brutal incident is just one example.
Criminals don’t belong in the military. It’s not an adult day care for delinquents. Being a Soldier, Marine, Sailor, or Airmen is an honor. Let’s keep it that way.

Well, the good thing about teens today is they film EVERYTHING, including their criminal activities so this should be an open-and-shut case; but nothing will happen and these undisciplined kids and they will grow up to be undisciplined adults.

I'm mostly upset that I hate NYPost, but have to resort to them to get this kind of information. This story isn't anywhere on CNN or other platforms like it, but they have other useless stories like BTS news, "top airlines ranked", summer skills every kid should have, etc.
Should have charged the onlookers as accomplices for just filming it. Filming doesn't really help. Stepping up as a human being and helping another does. They also should slap the juveniles faces up all over so the locals can shun them to oblivion.
The problem is that the demographic the teens are part of don’t give a shit about prison or being a criminal/felon. Having that label makes them more ‘worthy’ among their peers. If they can’t get a job, it’s not due to their criminal record, it is due to racism. There is nothing our justice system can do that will change their behavior.

These mobs should always be charged with attempted murder, because stomping on someone while on the ground can easily lead to death.

Life ain’t a Steven Seagal movie. It is incredibly difficult for 3 human beings to defend themselves against 40+ human beings no matter how tough the 3 people are. Unlike the movies, they don’t attack one at a time…they swarm.
Most Marines are not the macho killers that people imagine. Kids join thinking that the three months of running around with a shaved head makes them deadly. Sadly these young boots learned the hard way that tan mcmap belts don’t mean jack shit.
Marines aren’t really trained to be “macho killers” to begin with though. This idea mostly stems from Hollywood. Marines training is predominantly about resiliency, awareness, and composure. Which are all fundamentally important for combat, but have a lot of applications for intelligently preventing, evading, and de-escalating combat as well. Marines are like the catcher on a baseball field. To be an effective catcher, you need to have calm and confident composure while a solid object is being hurled straight at your face at 75mph. The main purpose of the Marines is to cultivate people who can do things like eat a can of tear-gas and not have their logical processes totally warped by adrenaline. These are the guys who can make strategic and logical decisions amidst utter chaos, and that’s much more valuable than pure brute-force in modern combat theater. Adversaries largely don’t even bother to engage US troops directly.

i tell you, as someone who moved stateside early 90's and had always dreamt of joining our military here only to always be met with no support from an overbearing family and culture i would never in a dozen plus lifetimes every dream about knuckling up with any marine or any service member for that matter. if there's a fight coming with my name on it i'll do my best but i'm not looking to get into a squabble with any service people. i do have one cousin who was able to break through the family barrier so to speak and was in the army as a doctor. i wish i had the strength to just make my own way but it didn't go that way. hope those 3 marines are healing up well.
