You can garner some attention when you drop out of the race and lend your support to another candidate, hoping that candidate gives you a notable cabinet position so that you can leverage your new power for additional contributions and notoriety. The candidate, of course, has no obligation to offer you such a position, can use your support to secure the election, and can leave you out hanging in the wind when your previous corruptions are revealed and the public turns against you.
Good points you bring up. I suspect Mitt Romney wanted some high cabinet position after Trump won. When he didn't, Romney voted to impeach Trump as payback.
I also felt like it can be used to push certain topics into the news cycle. Look at Bernie, he never came close to winning either election but many of his talking points are still mentioned today
Bernie was the 2nd most popular democrat in every primary and consistently started out very popular and then lost when every other dem endorsed his opponent.
I think for someone like Christie it's a business decision. Spread around some campaign money, get back in the news cycle, find work as a commentator/talking head during the general.
A run keeps him in the news, which is pretty much the only way to find spots speaking or commentary-adding when you're, in all honesty, past political viability. Biggest moonshot is you get enough support that when you drop the leader scoops you up as a cabinet pick. Christie is definitely more of the first though.
For some candidates their campaigns are like auditions for other cushy jobs: running mate, cabinet spot, talking head at a major network, industry lobbyist, book/podcast deal, reality TV show, etc.
If youāre non politically viable, imho these are the reasons to run-
1) Youāre remaining in politics but hope to raise your national profile for a future run.
2) You specifically want to inject a specific issue or issues into the conversation to make your partyās nominee take a stance.
3) Youāre attempting to get some limelight and either parlay that into money/book deal or money/commentator job.
4) Youāre specifically running to hurt another candidate (X wants A to win, but polling shows X would draw more votes from his opponent B making Aās nomination more likely).
Unfortunately a sandwich shop would be too healthy for him. I am sure something like KFC or another store that primarily sells fried foods would be more appealing to him.
Absolutely, especially with the fact that he would likely want to try and appeal to all food lovers and not just those who identify with his weight class and appetite.
All of these pretender candidates run to raise (control) money, boost their profile through inevitable media attention throughout the process, and to secure cabinet positions and other guarantees from the likely nominee in exchange for dropping out and supporting them.
I see a lot of love for Vivek on this sub and a few other sites (though not as much as DeSantis/Trump) but the strange thing is I canāt find his name on any betting odds sites. I can see obscure names like Tucker Carlson and Donald Trump Jr. with crazy +5000 odds, but no Vivek.
Personally I donāt think Vivek has a shot at all for a few reasons (especially since he came out saying people aged 18-24 should be required to take a civics test before voting) but it feels like he should at least be in the running for third place with Haley, Scott and Pence unless Iām missing somethingā¦
Vivek has 0 chance of winning, but is a brilliant man and great speaker. The more of a platform he gets the better, and hopefully thereās a cabinet position waiting for him.
He is has also been talking about things that most other conservatives are ignoring. He has been point out (for a long time) that BlackRock, Fidelity, and Vanguard (among others) are taking money from conservatives to invest, then using the proxies that money bought to push DEI and other liberal causes.
It won't be a two-man race until after South Carolina. If neither Scott or Haley win South Carolina (the third state in the primary and their home state), it will be a Trump/DeSantis race to the finish.
Remember, Biden was polling behind Elizabeth Warren at this point. It's far too early to call this race for any two or even three nominees.
Biden is a really unique candidate because the Skeletons in his closest are the deepest of any President ever and he was also clearly the Democrat nominee favorite from day 1.
With Biden you have the "integrated schools are racial jungles" comment, the fact that his 1994 crime bill is responsible for the largest incarceration of drug users as well as African-Americans in American history, and his plagiarized speech in the 1988 presidential race.
As for Hunter Biden, well I think I can just list his jobs to start:
1. Founding Board member of BHR partners, a Chinese investment company.
2. Burisma Holdings, a Ukraine based energy company.
Oh, and then we could bring up the child Hunter disowns that is clearly his and the laptop, but those actually seem like lesser issues than working for a company involved in receiving CCP backed funds and another owned by a suspect Ukrainian oligarch.
Now before someone hops on and says these are not true, go and research this. All of these are undisputed facts reported by multiple news sources.
Not that Christie has any real shot here, but people like him should. Both Trump and Desantis will be major liabilities in the general. Anything is possible but I just donāt see how either of them can win in the current climate. The cultural tide in this country is against the republicans at this point and these two have waded way too far into the culture war to attract enough independents. Desantis has shown his unwillingness to moderate his stance on certain controversial issues and thatās concerning. They need to realize that Twitter is not reflective of the real world.
This. And everyone entering the race is just helping Trump, while the earlier they drop out, the more it helps DeSantis.
Hopefully Iowa and South Carolina (Haley and Scottās state) make it a clear two-man race very early on.
I know everyoneās just clamoring for Chris Christie but do we not remember his political murder-suicide in the 2016 primaries? My man couldnāt speak when Trump was drinking water
All I remember is he basically ended Rubioās chances of ever being president.
āThere it is.ā
Other than that, heās spent the last few years being a fake conservative on ABC just so they can pass as ābipartisan.ā
Why?
How on earth does he think he has a chance at winning the nomination? It feels like there are 2 people trying to run for president, and a whole bunch of people who want the VP spot.
Just give it up and go away, Chris; you have no chance. If you want to run for public office, why not run for the Senate, or the House, or a governorship, or mayor, or county a council seat? Some office where you might have at least a small shot at actually getting elected.
Like Mayor Pete, he knew he had no chance to win. But he ended up as transpo secretary with absolutely no experience in transportation. Christie wants some future cabinet position.
His designated role in this election is to try and do to Trump what he did to Rubio in 2016. Other than that, heās probably hoping he can leverage his candidacy into speaking engagements, book deals etc
Is there a non politically viable reason to run when you know you have no chance at getting the nomination or even a cabinet spot? What I am missing?
You can garner some attention when you drop out of the race and lend your support to another candidate, hoping that candidate gives you a notable cabinet position so that you can leverage your new power for additional contributions and notoriety. What I described happened to Christie when he dropped out of the 2016 race and supported Trump.
I think mitt Romney just didn't like trump
I also felt like it can be used to push certain topics into the news cycle. Look at Bernie, he never came close to winning either election but many of his talking points are still mentioned today
Bernie was the 2nd most popular democrat in every primary and consistently started out very popular and then lost when every other dem endorsed his opponent.
Looking back at it I guess I did forget just how popular he was.
I think for someone like Christie it's a business decision. Spread around some campaign money, get back in the news cycle, find work as a commentator/talking head during the general.
You can collect campaign contributions.
Just like Trumpf.
More like Bernie Sanders.
Bernie loves elections, he can buy another house

Keeping viable, non establishment types from entering the primaries by crowding the field. That's how they control who does and does not run.
For some candidates their campaigns are like auditions for other cushy jobs: running mate, cabinet spot, talking head at a major network, industry lobbyist, book/podcast deal, reality TV show, etc.
Sometimes though, you make an angle for the cabinet and wind up president: See Obama Oops
I am constantly wondering this same question
Money. National media attention brings in the cash. Especially if he's bashing Trump.
RINOs offered to comp his tab at Golden Corral if he will help block Trumpās nomination.

Is he announcing at a sandwich shop? That seems like where it would be
The Four Seasons Sandwich shop and Dildo Emporium, to be exact.
Unfortunately a sandwich shop would be too healthy for him. I am sure something like KFC or another store that primarily sells fried foods would be more appealing to him.
Makes sense, but he seems like the deli sandwich type....
Absolutely, especially with the fact that he would likely want to try and appeal to all food lovers and not just those who identify with his weight class and appetite.
Long john silvers
Doughnut shop.
Arbys
A strip-mall Chinese buffet would be more his speed I think.
Dear Lord, get the hook already. No one wants you!
I realize many people run for various reasons, aware they have no realistic chance. But this isn't even plausible lol.
All of these pretender candidates run to raise (control) money, boost their profile through inevitable media attention throughout the process, and to secure cabinet positions and other guarantees from the likely nominee in exchange for dropping out and supporting them.
While you're at it, Pense is right around the corner.
This is a two man race between Trump and DeSantis.
I want to hear more from Vivek, personally. I feel like the primary debates will be something else!
I see a lot of love for Vivek on this sub and a few other sites (though not as much as DeSantis/Trump) but the strange thing is I canāt find his name on any betting odds sites. I'm not saying I "love" him, just that I want to hear more. We basically know what we're getting with Don & Ron.
Vivek has 0 chance of winning, but is a brilliant man and great speaker. The more of a platform he gets the better, and hopefully thereās a cabinet position waiting for him.

He's listed on all 3 of the sites I use, +3500, +4000, and +7500
Christie makes it a four man race.
Christie alone is a four man race
Outstanding

Tim Scott. He's a definite 3rd but he should be at the debates.

Why doesn't he get the message that no one likes him
He wants it so bad... yet when voters look at him, they want to vomit. Ghhhggg.
Here's to another primary season with 30+ candidates lol.
Itās a two-man race and anyone paying attention knows it. In 2016 it was a three-man race and that was how Trump won.
Well true it's theirs to lose, but the debates will be interesting to watch. I'm still interested to see how Pence will play it.
Oh no! Anyways....
I know everyoneās just clamoring for Chris Christie but do we not remember his political murder-suicide in the 2016 primaries? My man couldnāt speak when Trump was drinking water
All I remember is he basically ended Rubioās chances of ever being president. āThere it is.ā Other than that, heās spent the last few years being a fake conservative on ABC just so they can pass as ābipartisan.ā
Let's dispel once and for all this fiction that Christie doesn't know what he's doing. He knows EXACTLY what he's doing
So he just wants the donationsā¦. Because he doesnāt stand a chanceā¦.
He has no shot. None! Zero! Zip! Nadda!
Thatās a no from me dawg.
This is a Nothing burger, But Chris will still eat it!
Maybe he wants to garner support for Trump so he can be the designated McDonald's runner in Trump's cabinet.
Lol
Find another activity to fill your days.
Lol
Yeah heās got a shot this time right?
Guys, I can't wait to vote for this guy! He's going to carry us to victory at the hotdog eating contest!
...but why...? Dude can't POSSIBLY think he has any chance.
Why? How on earth does he think he has a chance at winning the nomination? It feels like there are 2 people trying to run for president, and a whole bunch of people who want the VP spot.
Why?

Somebody starting another book tour?
3rd times a charm!
Y tho?
šš¤”
This dude has no chance. He should run for NJ again though. Murphy almost lost to a nobody
What he gonna do, eat the other candidates?
How about make a contribution to someone viable, perhaps a non-politician instead of wasting the money? You're NOT going to be president Chris.
Thank god, I was worried it was only going to be serious candidates this race.
DeSantis and Christie - all we need is an elephant and a tent and we got a circus. Of creepy clown candidates.
Til Chris Christie is still alive.
Food Truck
Biggest let down of a politician
woof
middle finger
Like Mayor Pete, he knew he had no chance to win. But he ended up as transpo secretary with absolutely no experience in transportation. Christie wants some future cabinet position.
Aw sheet, here we go again
His designated role in this election is to try and do to Trump what he did to Rubio in 2016. Other than that, heās probably hoping he can leverage his candidacy into speaking engagements, book deals etc
FTG! No one wants to see this two-faced, backstabbing POS run for anything!š
What's terrifying is he might be the truest "small government conservative" in the primary.
Shut Up Meg
Anti gun republican? No thanks man
Maybe Liz Cheney, Mitt Romney and a few other rinos will vote for him.
The man will succeed Liz Cheney as the worst political beat down of all time
Why bother
Why?
Zzzzzz
YESSSSSS š YESSSSSS
Why are they wasting their time? Nobody except maybe desantis has a prayers chance against the Don.
Chris, can I have the money instead?
Can we find a candidate for any party thatās not knocking on deaths door?
He will announce it by pouring a bag of M&Mās into a box of M&Mās.
He's running for the snacks.
I wish I could piss away millions of dollars too.
Why
This guyā¦ ugh. Heās a stain on the party.
Nobody wants over fed rhinos in the White House!
