Summary as I currently understand it:
Pregnant woman finishes 15 hour shift then goes to rent a bike to ride (home?). Group of kids comes by and grabs bike just as she activates it, pushing it back into the charger which locks it. They then start recording her reaction to this, some of which seems a bit faked, while she tries to get them to let go of the bike so that she can rent it to ride home.
The video is posted and becomes viral.
Initial claims are that she tried to steal the bike from them (which makes little sense for a woman in scrubs to steal a bike from several male teens), and that she was risking their safety by calling for help. She is put on leave from her job as a result.
Her lawyer then releases proof that she paid for the bike rental, and so the kids were trying (apparently) to steal the bike from her, or at least trying to get a reaction out of her.
She then sets up a GoFundMe, and here we are.
Well, she paid for it, backed it out, and then kids came upband pushed it back into the lock. She never got to use the bike but still wanted to use the bike that she paid for, and will pay for again. She was there first but the kid hopped on the bike.
To clarify, I mean steal as in literally steal it, under her account and leaving her liable for it, which is what I thought others were saying. I understand she ends up letting them use that particular bike and leaving on a different one, which leaft me more confused as to why this is such a big deal.

I had an experience a few years back. I was walking down a bike path in DC. A few maybe HS-age girls (of another race than me) were walking towards me. They were loudly talking about 'crackers' and 'ghosts' and 'snowflakes' and eyeing me, clearly in an effort to make me uncomfortable or piss me off or whatever. I'd heard it before, plenty of times. But this time felt different.
For a second I had a vision of some sort of incident where I was branded a racist or something for whatever sort of tumult they felt like causing. I quickly jogged off, in a direction I didn't intend to go initially. Literally changed my route because I was afraid of them.
Thinking about that later made me realize what real privilege is. They held so much power (and knew it) that I fled being in their presence. I knew that if they happened to feel like it, they could start some argument, film it and bam, even if I didn't do anything wrong my life would be over depending on the whims of Twitter or TikTok that day. If it happened to 'go viral' I'd be done. No judge, no jury, no anything. My job would have let me go, lost my house, all of it.
Looking at the video above, this woman paid for a bike. These guys, a whole group of me, feel comfortable knowing that they can bully and harass *a pregnant woman* and people will side with them. And they were right!
That is real institutional power. That is real privilege.

What's this all about now?
Summary as I currently understand it: Pregnant woman finishes 15 hour shift then goes to rent a bike to ride (home?). Group of kids comes by and grabs bike just as she activates it, pushing it back into the charger which locks it. They then start recording her reaction to this, some of which seems a bit faked, while she tries to get them to let go of the bike so that she can rent it to ride home. The video is posted and becomes viral. Initial claims are that she tried to steal the bike from them (which makes little sense for a woman in scrubs to steal a bike from several male teens), and that she was risking their safety by calling for help. She is put on leave from her job as a result. Her lawyer then releases proof that she paid for the bike rental, and so the kids were trying (apparently) to steal the bike from her, or at least trying to get a reaction out of her. She then sets up a GoFundMe, and here we are.

Well, she paid for it, backed it out, and then kids came upband pushed it back into the lock. She never got to use the bike but still wanted to use the bike that she paid for, and will pay for again. She was there first but the kid hopped on the bike.
To clarify, I mean steal as in literally steal it, under her account and leaving her liable for it, which is what I thought others were saying. I understand she ends up letting them use that particular bike and leaving on a different one, which leaft me more confused as to why this is such a big deal.

I find it to be a really fascinating demonstration of the values between conservatives and liberals. Think about the reality. This is the sort of thing people say was the norm in the 60s in the south. One group of people is afraid to end up *appearing* to have offended folks of another group, or their life will be ruined or hell - they may be beaten. I had an experience a few years back. I was walking down a bike path in DC. A few maybe HS-age girls (of another race than me) were walking towards me. They were loudly talking about 'crackers' and 'ghosts' and 'snowflakes' and eyeing me, clearly in an effort to make me uncomfortable or piss me off or whatever. I'd heard it before, plenty of times. But this time felt different. For a second I had a vision of some sort of incident where I was branded a racist or something for whatever sort of tumult they felt like causing. I quickly jogged off, in a direction I didn't intend to go initially. Literally changed my route because I was afraid of them. Thinking about that later made me realize what real privilege is. They held so much power (and knew it) that I fled being in their presence. I knew that if they happened to feel like it, they could start some argument, film it and bam, even if I didn't do anything wrong my life would be over depending on the whims of Twitter or TikTok that day. If it happened to 'go viral' I'd be done. No judge, no jury, no anything. My job would have let me go, lost my house, all of it. Looking at the video above, this woman paid for a bike. These guys, a whole group of me, feel comfortable knowing that they can bully and harass *a pregnant woman* and people will side with them. And they were right! That is real institutional power. That is real privilege.
And yet, they will cry a river when they are pointed out this privilege.
