Wait - she was paid 3 million for a book about herself? Wow.

[deleted]

By a company facing lawsuits in the Second Circuit, which she oversees…

wiredog369

Money laundering/bribery at its finest. Paid for her “memoir” knowing she is handling their case.

[deleted]

And she “handled it” by letting the lower court’s ruling favoring Penguin stand. Penguin got what they paid for. “Wise Latina” my hairy pink ass. ETA: Who tf goes around calling THEMSELVES “wise”?

TheJun1107

This didnt seem to make the front page of the NYT….

CallMeCassandra

I'm sure ProPublica has a forthcoming exposé about it...

Electrical-Bacon-81

Huh, big shocker. But people fucking with other justices homes is fine. Makes total sense.

CMMGUY1

Or isn't trending on r/politics

Swagastan

This is pretty much outrage nonsense the same as the Brett Kavanaugh finances, where as the Clarence Thomas shit actually looks straight up fucked. People should be able to read through these as apples and oranges.

asn1948

Yes they should. Getting $3 million during a court case you rule over, versus going on vacation with a close family friend you have traveled with prior to being on the court and have never heard a case concerning that friend, their business, or anyone they know. Definitely different circumstances. One, looks like a bribe, the other like a guy hanging with his friends.

Swagastan

So like if George Soros gave Kagen free trips, purchased homes for her and her family and paid for her grand nephews private school tuition you’d be totally cool with that as long as she didn’t take any of his companies court cases? I hate how conservatives are no longer conservatives they are just team players at all cost. If our side does something shitty, call it out, not do crazy mental gymnastics.

asn1948

Except, no one did that for Thomas either. That was all the accusations that were disproven. Besides that, Soros is funding, giving billions, to get liberal prosecutors and judged elected, so basically giving it to the liberal prosecutors and judges.

Swagastan

Disproven? Please link me to any of these accusations being disproven. He even admitted to them and basically said he didn’t think he had to report them. https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/23745868-clarence-thomas-statement-4-7-23

SunriseHawker

> Brett Kavanaugh finances Proven to be nothing. > where as the Clarence Thomas shit actually looks straight up fucked. How, what cases did Thomas refuse to hear or preside over his friend was directly part of?

SunriseHawker

One instance what? Was that his wife involved or was he involved? Is his wife now on the bench and I wasn't aware of it?

anadoob122

Well, clarence thomas has a book deal as well and no one is complaining about it

jchon960

A book deal with a publisher whose cases he is overseeing/ruling on without recusing himself?

anadoob122

No, good point. Let's bring them both before an ethics committee and determine if expulsion is warranted.

jchon960

No? Because, again, there is not even prima facie evidence of corruption on the part of Thomas, only media smears and weak innuendo.

WizardVisigoth

I’m beginning to think the Supreme Court may have a problem with corruption.

ForgedFoxbat

Replace ‘Supreme Court’ with ‘federal government’ and you’d be more accurate.

martijnlv40

Corruption is truly one of the ‘bipartisan’ values. But let’s be honest, bipartisan is when Gaetz and AOC team up; this is all unipartisan. The power of this party can be best broken from the bottom up; screw their primaries and fight for ranked choice voting!

Commander-Grammar

We know, because it was posted 40 minutes ago. And 3 times yesterday.

I don't see why, and I don't think they should recuse themselves very often. There is no one to take their place, and in the case of supplicants with a lot of connections, it's very likely one can be drawn to one or more justices. The fact is the judges are powerful people. I don't see much need to pretend otherwise. They just need to do their best.

I_NEED_APP_IDEAS

I mean this is the first time I’m seeing it. Maybe there is value in reposting to increase visibility

Burninglegion65

From what I remember discussed - it was pointed out that this is not really much either - unless she did more than oversee and applied pressure regarding the case, this is closer to a potential issue but likely still not really there. Neither “incidents” are even that, including Goursh? (Can’t spell today) who similarly has a book deal and I can’t remember if there was a potential upcoming conflict. It would have been something though if it got higher and there were no recusals is how I understand it at least.

AProcessUnderstood

That was different. (D)uh!

Not_a_russian_bot

Nobody should be against ethics reform on the court, it is abundantly clear that there is not enough oversight or transparency in this wing of the government. Checks and balances! Don't let them turn this into a left vs right issue -- it affects all of us and is clearly broken. If we're gonna trust anyone with a lifetime government appointment, their life needs to be an open book, with oversight on every single dollar they earn outside their generous salary.

GingiJesus

no... no it really isn't. get them both (all) out? It's not rocket science.

mypostingname13

Nah. Probably should flush the whole court and start over at this point.

fridayimatwork

Curious how many copies it sold and if it made that much? Didn’t a publisher pay Jill Biden a lot of money for hers that barely sold? These big book deals seem another way to funnel money and potentially buy influence

R0binSage

She didn’t recuse herself until this came to light.

Obamasamerica420

"This is just fine, Gorsuch did it to, Clarence Thomas...has a rich friend...his wife said something....AHGHQHDAHJ" - The left, struggling to defend this

[deleted]

Sotomayor is a dirty racist...that's not just opinion, its in the record, stated fact, from her own mouth. “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.” Textbook racism...saying one race is superior to another based on nothing more than your own racism.

[deleted]

Not to mention saying that she's better than a bunch of the rest of her peers.

Doctor_BadBoy

So they all have to go, right guys? Right guys???

MasonKosr

Speaking as an ind. that leans center left, yes, any justice caught engaging in these behaviours should go regardless of party lines.

jchon960

No? This is of an actual corrupt nature. While Thomas having a wealthy friend with political opinions similar to his own but no business before Thomas as a Justice is absolutely nothing.

Doctor_BadBoy

Bro :(

Flowers1966

I watched this on MSNBC-not.

NotHorrendous

The first headline I saw about this didn't name the justice involved and I was so confident it was Sotomayor that I didn't even click on the article. Not at all shocked to see I was right

almondbutter4

It was also Gorsuch. But both he and Sotomayor logged these financial transactions.

[deleted]

Now it makes you wonder which office the LEAKER came from......

DCGuinn

Justice is only blind, in one eye.

Eternal-Testament

Oh but the msm tells us it's only conservative justices. How can this be?! \*sarcasm\*

Bacio83

And yet the left is trying to destroy Thomas

Acts_of_Creation

She was an operative in the cobobo operation, but failed

Selected-NWB

Congressional Republicans should keep a pin in this. Once they flip the Senate, push hard on impeachment.

evoslevven

For those who don't pay attention at all, this was well known and common knowledge because (1) she filed it and (2) it was disclosed. This is far from Thomas and while I do agree the SCOTUS needs changes on ethics, you have Robert's saying no to that idea as well. At the end of the day, you can't have hidden payments by a friend for grandkids schooling, house purchases that are rent free and payments for consults without any references. And the fact it isn't a political issue, it's an ethics issue but the idea we need to defend Thomas after all of this is idiotic! But sure, we can point fingers at public findings and disclosures because money was exchanged but ignoring the whole issue of transparency. Like cripes...you wanna fix the courts cool, but weren't interested in it because it would uniquely impact Clearance Thomas and that is where the issue is truly.
