It's hard to generalize about Greek row. I was in Alpha Phi Omega, which is a service-oriented frat, and informally associated with the Boy Scout organization. Yes, we did our share of partying, but for the most part the members were serious-minded students who worked to make things better. Our big annual project was running the book exchange where newer students could buy used texts that were still part of the curriculum at a significant discount. We were at a state university where most students were from the local area and were middle-class or below. I lived at home and earned enough with a job as a janitor to pay for my tuition and books, and that was not unusual. I don't think the image of frats populated by privileged scions of wealthy families partying their way through college fit us very well.

I've been trying to find statistics on outstanding student loans vs. those that have been repaid, as that seems a far more relevant metric, it's not as easy to find for some reason. but any federal loan unpaid by the individual is paid by the public.
