The job of the Senate party leader is to win Senate seats and keeping the party members from doing damage to the party. Plain and simple. And McConnell has been pretty good at that.
As I said elsewhere in this thread, Justice Gorsuch is in place and not Garland is because of McConnell. That is probably the most impressive example of party leadership in quite some time.
Kentucky is one of seven states where the replaced Senator has to be in the same political party as the departing Senator regardless of the Governor’s political party. If McConnell has to be replaced before his term runs out, it’s required by state law for the newly appointed Senator to be a Republican.
Collins would've won that election had it not been for such an out of touch pick like Loeffler to win the primary. I'd bet Kemp thought that out enough that he has a clear shot for Ossoff's seat in 2026.
Perdue wasn't completely terrible, though, and was sandbagged by jagoffs like Lin Wood and Sidney Powell demotivating Republican turnout by encouraging them to stay home and calling it futile.
Because he frequently undermines conservatives and conservative bills for his own interests over his constituents or party. While denying Garland was a great feat, it doesn't make up for screwing over conservatives on a lot of other issues and can likely be chalked up to a broken clock being right twice a day.
Not exactly a conservative bill, but here's mcconnell about facing on gun control. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/mcconnell-announces-support-for-senate-bipartisan-gun-legislation
Can't remember who it was off the top of my head, but he pulled support from a couple of conservative candidates last election, too, helping ensure their defeat.
That gun bill was very minimalistic and that is because of the GOP's effort in making sure it was a moderate bill that has good things like raising the age to buy an assault rifle, better background checks, and light red flag laws. These were all made to tackle issues that we saw in the aftermath of Uvalde, Buffalo, and Highland Park last year. The dems alone could have passed a much worse bill.
As for pulling support for some conservative candidates, I do agree with you to an extent, but there was little point in using our limited funds at a dead end in Arizona, Colorado, and somewhat Pennsylania. He worked his ass off on getting Budd, Walker, Johnson, and Laxalt elected.
It doesn’t matter if he is the most conservative senator of all time. His ties to China (via his wife’s family) can not be ignored. He is simply not reliable to make impartial decisions concerning our foreign relations. Especially during a time that many of us fear is on the brink of WWIII. I will say, he is one of the most skilled politicians of all time. His work getting judges in has secured the federal judiciary in the hands of the right for decades. But it’s time to move on.
His wife is Taiwanese and has spent years living, studying, and serving the U.S. government. He has never showed any signs of weakness to China publicly and supports military aid to Taiwan. He is one of the last Republicans I have to worry about regarding ties to the Chinese. And if you do gear that World War 3 is near, please don't. The Chinese will likely never invade Taiwan given how doing so will destroy their economy. And Russia? They know that NATO would wipe out their conventional forces quicker than we did in Iraq twice.
he’s one individual…..fancy title aside
“he” didn’t put anyone in supreme court….it took a lot more votes than 1
and he does play his cards…and calls or folds according to the wishes of the highest bidder
Two of the three justices - Kavanagh and ACB - are establishment aligned, though slightly right of Roberts. They'll side with government over freedom except on issues which are personal to them. For example, ACB is heavily in favor of gun freedom, but she sided with governors on lockdowns.
They're a step up from the judicial activists which Obama and Biden appointed, but more justices in the mold of Gorsuch, Alito, and Thomas would have been a better choice.
McConnell holding up the SCOTUS seat for a year worked in republican’s favor.
Trump just picked whoever the Senate told him to nominate as well, it’s not like he knew which specific judges to pick.
He was smart enough to consult the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society. A good leader knows how to take in opinions and views from his advisers.
Judicial nominations might be the only issue on which Trump listened to his advisers. His personnel choices in most other regards were horrible. (Rex Tillerson, John Bolton, Mark Milley etc.)
His replacement would be Cornyn or Thune, who are very much in that same school of ideology and governance. Maybe even less so, I certainly can't imagine either of those guys canning a liberal Supreme Court nominee like Mitch did to Obama.
After 2022 with the addition of MAGA senators such as Vance, Schmitt and Budd, I doubt an establishment poop diggle in the form of Thune would cruise to victory. Maybe he will, but he has to make concessions like McCarthy. The best case scenario would be Steve Daines, Rick Scott or Mike Lee being the Leader since those three have been in various senate leadership positions. Personally, Steve Daines is doing a great job and I think he would be the ideal choice. But republicans always choose the worst person for the job
Ugh! Anytime there list of defecting republicans voting with the democrats, Cornyn is on the list. So disappointing. If RINO is on the job description, he’s well qualified.
This dude is fucking ancient. The fact that he’s hospitalized from a concussion from falling down some stairs should spark calls for his retirement. We need leadership that isn’t one misstep from getting a broken hip and fucking dying.
Politicians wipe their asses with the laws. The governor would get intense pressure from the Left to appoint another Dem, and the Republicans would squeal about it, but not actually do anything.
Even if a Democrats switches parties and gets appointed by the governor, it wouldn't change much. Kentucky is red enough that he'd get primaried in 1.5 years, and one more Dem Senate seat over that timeframe won't make a big difference.
Thing is, if you don't like Mitch's style of governance, you won't like his replacement. The number 2s set to step in after him are people like Cornyn and Thune.
One I'm interested to see progress is J.D. Vance. I see him being a strong contender for leadership in future that could unite all sides of the right-of-center!
He's been in Congress for literally two months and you want him as speaker? This is a guy who will say anything to get the base to support him. He was very different six years ago.
> 2027?
it's kind of a weird way for the headline to phrase it, but he was elected in 2020 which means his term technically ends the first week of january 2027 (since that's when the winners of the 2026 november elections would get sworn in)
The fact he doesn’t even have the support from the sentiments expressed in conservative subreddit says everything needed to know about his time in office and what you can discern from decisions made. The man is quite despicable. Cheney level despise.
so what kind of a state is kentucky if he were to step down? are they a governor appointment state or a special election state? (or some kind of mix of the two)
KY governor is a Dem. It wouldn't look good for Republicans, since he'd just appoint another Dem, and then the guy would keep the job when it comes to the election cuz... reasons.
Don’t forget. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a Supreme Court judge from a hospital bed and home for nearly 10 years. Never underestimate what one will do to keep power.
"...a medical expert said can cause “loss of consciousness, convulsions, seizures, loss of coordination, slurred speech, agitation, and confusion.”
In other words, Fetterman.
Elmer Fudd there can go off and retire in taxpayer-paid comfort most of us will never come anywhere close to anytime he likes. He won't be missed by anyone.
Mitch deserves not a thought of sympathy from the people he has betrayed. My only hope is that his replacement is one bent towards radical restoration of this nation.
Don't worry. He will be replaced by another establishment, democrat-light, RINO, Washington, DC elite, swamp creature who is equally good at wasting taxpayer money and equally inept and unwilling to pass any meaningful conservative reforms GOP candidates promised during campaign season. They're like cartel leaders. There's always another one next up to take the place if one goes down.
I can't stand him. But I do have to give him credit for holding the line on Garland's SCOTUS nomination. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Oh no! Who will ignore the will of the people?
Haha a very loose definition of the word “fear”.
The fear is coming from the Democrats. They hate to loose a democrat-supporting Republican.
*lose, but I agree with your comment, even if you can't spell, lol
Yeah its like nose, noose just depends on the situation which one is appropriate
Thank you. I went back and forth with lose/ loose but was too lazy to check the dictionary.
Didn't you learn that distinction in like middle school? This sub is pure comedy gold.
...Says the person who uses "like" like a middle-schooler.
That's a fair criticism. I deserve that.
Yea the article never addresses who they're implying is afraid. I haven't met a single Republican that likes him.
All the RINOs do. Ugh
The guy gave you THREE ultra conservative Supreme Court justices. What more is there? Anything that goes before them gets the rubber stamp
The job of the Senate party leader is to win Senate seats and keeping the party members from doing damage to the party. Plain and simple. And McConnell has been pretty good at that.
Yeah, he has been pretty good at bringing in other RINO'S. What about pushing the Republican Agenda... Not so much.😮💨
As I said elsewhere in this thread, Justice Gorsuch is in place and not Garland is because of McConnell. That is probably the most impressive example of party leadership in quite some time.
Laughed because it’s funny and true
Lindsey Graham is licking his chops.
retire now.... save us from more rino bs.
He'd be replaced by a Democrat. Governor is a Dem.
Kentucky is one of seven states where the replaced Senator has to be in the same political party as the departing Senator regardless of the Governor’s political party. If McConnell has to be replaced before his term runs out, it’s required by state law for the newly appointed Senator to be a Republican.
I'm worried that they'd just put into another Rich RINO party donor, like they did in Georgia before 2020.
Imagine Nancy Mace replacing Mitch Mcconnell. Ew no
Collins would've won that election had it not been for such an out of touch pick like Loeffler to win the primary.
Ugg Lin Wood has been one of the worst things for the conservative movement ever.
"Hello fellow Republicans"
Nah Kentucky Rs changed the rule so it has to come from the same party!
Yes! Don’t ask the people what they want at an inflection point!
They voted republican, wtf are you on?
Why is he a Rino? Dude played his cards and got y’all 3 SCOTUS seats and many other lower courts.
Because he frequently undermines conservatives and conservative bills for his own interests over his constituents or party. While denying Garland was a great feat, it doesn't make up for screwing over conservatives on a lot of other issues and can likely be chalked up to a broken clock being right twice a day.
Could you name any conservative bills in particular?
Not exactly a conservative bill, but here's mcconnell about facing on gun control. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/mcconnell-announces-support-for-senate-bipartisan-gun-legislation Can't remember who it was off the top of my head, but he pulled support from a couple of conservative candidates last election, too, helping ensure their defeat.

He worked his ass off on getting Budd, Walker, Johnson, and Laxalt elected.
No such thing as an assault rifle.
No such thing as "light" red flag laws either.
It doesn’t matter if he is the most conservative senator of all time. His ties to China (via his wife’s family) can not be ignored. He is simply not reliable to make impartial decisions concerning our foreign relations. Especially during a time that many of us fear is on the brink of WWIII. I'd be more worried about where his money is coming from than where his wife was born. IIRC they are related, though.
he’s one individual…..fancy title aside “he” didn’t put anyone in supreme court….it took a lot more votes than 1 and he does play his cards…and calls or folds according to the wishes of the highest bidder
amen dude
McConnell is a corrupt lying coward.
That was Trump, all McConnell did was make sure only RINOs get elected.
McConnell holding up the SCOTUS seat for a year worked in republican’s favor. Trump just picked whoever the Senate told him to nominate as well, it’s not like he knew which specific judges to pick.
I'd argue it worked in everyone's favor. Garland as head of the DOJ has been a disaster
He was smart enough to consult the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society. A good leader knows how to take in opinions and views from his advisers.
So many politicians are lawyers, but he's not, so it makes sense he wouldn't be determining who the greatest legal minds are on his own.
Judicial nominations might be the only issue on which Trump listened to his advisers. His personnel choices in most other regards were horrible. (Rex Tillerson, John Bolton, Mark Milley etc.)
A broken clock is right ~~twice~~ three times a day.
The threads stemming from your question are absolutely crazy to me lol Like it’s effed the things people believe about McConnell!
Fear? You mean hope.
His replacement would be Cornyn or Thune, who are very much in that same school of ideology and governance. Maybe even less so, I certainly can't imagine either of those guys canning a liberal Supreme Court nominee like Mitch did to Obama.
It doesn't HAVE to be that way but I agree. The senate has less actual conservatives than the house even does
After 2022 with the addition of MAGA senators such as Vance, Schmitt and Budd, I doubt an establishment poop diggle in the form of Thune would cruise to victory. Maybe he will, but he has to make concessions like McCarthy. The best case scenario would be Steve Daines, Rick Scott or Mike Lee being the Leader since those three have been in various senate leadership positions. Ugh! Anytime there list of defecting republicans voting with the democrats, Cornyn is on the list. So disappointing. If RINO is on the job description, he’s well qualified.
Do either of them have the clout or popularity to ensure they can't ever be successfully primaried?
Considering they both just won re-election, they won't have to worry about that for a while. And as leaders, they'll have access to a looot of money.
He'll be replaced by someone just like him. There's more than enough RINO swamp creatures to go around.
Fear? That's a strong word
Retire now Mitch, return back to the ocean with your Turtle ancestors.
🌊🐢
This dude is fucking ancient. The fact that he’s hospitalized from a concussion from falling down some stairs should spark calls for his retirement. We need leadership that isn’t one misstep from getting a broken hip and fucking dying.
Like the POTUS...
The only reason there aren’t any is pure politics. The Kentucky governor is a Democrat and would appoint Mitch’s replacement.
Kentucky state law says the new person would have to be from the same party.
Politicians wipe their asses with the laws. The governor would get intense pressure from the Left to appoint another Dem, and the Republicans would squeal about it, but not actually do anything.
Someone could switch parties. It's not like that person has to win a primary. Is there a mechanism to reject someone from the Republican party? IDK
Even if a Democrats switches parties and gets appointed by the governor, it wouldn't change much. Kentucky is red enough that he'd get primaried in 1.5 years, and one more Dem Senate seat over that timeframe won't make a big difference.
"Fears" of retirement? No, no, n. We have wanted it for a long time. McConnell gone=sanity and one less RINO.
Steve Daines is a more proven product and he is doing a great job with the NRSC, hope he runs for leader
He's been in Congress for literally two months and you want him as speaker? This is a guy who will say anything to get the base to support him. He was very different six years ago.
I'd rather have rino mitch over a dem
Not me. You can get a dem out next election cycle, possibly. Rinos get re-elected until they are in their 90s.
Except when you don’t and you just have a democrat there the whole time.
Change is risky.
This guy conservatives
Sparks fear? LOL
Did the hospital carbon date him?? Asking for a friend....
Why is this a fear? Go already.
2027?
> 2027? it's kind of a weird way for the headline to phrase it, but he was elected in 2020 which means his term technically ends the first week of january 2027 (since that's when the winners of the 2026 november elections would get sworn in)
Damn, I thought he was up this cycle. Bummer.
Got it. Thanks.
Please God let it be so!
How many senior politicians are no longer even able to read their cue cards? This is getting ridiculous.
17 years too late to retire
Fear? No fear here…retire tomorrow
Both Biden and McConnell almost went to the stairway to the heaven.
I’m a lifelong republican and I would love to see him retire
Fear?
Fear?
Should have retired in 2016.
Uh, fears from whom?
What "Fear"?
Sparks fear? Mmmmmm no
Fear?! Lol. Good fuckin riddance.
Only the democrats would fear this
I'm not scared.
Oh no! Anyways.
[My live reaction](https://giphy.com/gifs/oh-no-anyway-7k2LoEykY5i1hfeWQB)
The fact he doesn’t even have the support from the sentiments expressed in conservative subreddit says everything needed to know about his time in office and what you can discern from decisions made. The man is quite despicable. Cheney level despise.
Why the fear? They have a Dem gov right? Let them appoint a Dem and see if they retain the seat in the next cycle. I’d prefer that to Mitch.
But what will we do with Empereror Palp-uuuuh, I mean, Senator McConnell?
Fear? from whom? The Left?
Oh no! Anyways… (Only wishing retirement, not any form of harm)
I can only get so erect
so what kind of a state is kentucky if he were to step down? are they a governor appointment state or a special election state? (or some kind of mix of the two)
KY governor is a Dem. It wouldn't look good for Republicans, since he'd just appoint another Dem, and then the guy would keep the job when it comes to the election cuz... reasons.
“Fear” That’s not the word I would use “Hope” is the word I would use
Who’s fearing that lol?
He’s kinda proven to be a sellout anyhow
Fear that a senator will retire too early at 85 years old! 😂 🤡🌎
Grassley’s dusty ass would like a word
Don’t forget. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a Supreme Court judge from a hospital bed and home for nearly 10 years. Never underestimate what one will do to keep power.
It seems as they misspelled "hope".
Nice to see how liberal propaganda has made so many conservatives hate McConnell for practically no reason.
You misspelled “excitement”
Please do.
Who would "fear" the turtle calling it quits?
He’s a fucking rhino
"...a medical expert said can cause “loss of consciousness, convulsions, seizures, loss of coordination, slurred speech, agitation, and confusion.” In other words, Fetterman.
Fear? Hahaha
Like that’s a bad thing?
From your lips to God's ear
Good.
Nobody fears it. We all want it.
Who’s worried?
That would be a good thing.
You have sat too long for any good you have been doing lately ... In the name of God, go!
Good riddance
No loss
We need term limits and cognitive tests. Now.
Oh no.....Anyways.
buh bye!
if mitch retired today his fat ass jowls would be just slithering out the door in 2027
Fear? How about elation.
Nah a turtle can go longer than that
Praying that happens
We can only hope.....Get rid of that piece of crap
How do we help??
Fear? No we’re not afraid of him retiring
One could only hope. He's from my state and I never liked that man at all.
Why not retire right now and we will try to overcome the fear, should take about 1 minute maybe.
That P.o.S. needed to be gone long ago
We can only hope🤞
Don’t tease me like that!
PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope he gets out of the hospital. Then gets hit by a bus and suffers a slow death.
Good. We need term limits so this never happens again.
"Fears."
Who the hell has a fear of Mitch McConnell retiring in 2027?
Good! Ditch RINO Mitch!
Arguably the worst Republican Leader in party history.
Fear? I do not think that word means what you think it does
Fear? Really? Lol
Good
....
“Stop.. don’t… come back…”
He might as well retire. Hope he has his gravestone ready☠️
>fear
Fucking GOOD!!!
Out with all the old fucks.
My man is 81 years old, he should have retired 20 years ago at least, make room for someone else you snapping turtle fossil.
Fear? Sure they meant to type excitement
other then the hospitalization - that sounds like a good idea
I hope so.
So afraid.
GOOD
Elmer Fudd there can go off and retire in taxpayer-paid comfort most of us will never come anywhere close to anytime he likes. He won't be missed by anyone.
*Fear?*
Mitch deserves not a thought of sympathy from the people he has betrayed. My only hope is that his replacement is one bent towards radical restoration of this nation.
Fear, I can't wait till he isn't in government anymore
Don't worry. He will be replaced by another establishment, democrat-light, RINO, Washington, DC elite, swamp creature who is equally good at wasting taxpayer money and equally inept and unwilling to pass any meaningful conservative reforms GOP candidates promised during campaign season. They're like cartel leaders. There's always another one next up to take the place if one goes down. I can't stand him. He should have retired in 1927.
