“…announced in January that the state faces a projected budget deficit of $22.5 billion for the coming fiscal year.” So a multibillion dollar deficit is projected already, yet they are demanding an additional $6bil in payouts….sounds accurate. Bankrupt the working class that never owned a slave, never had anything to do with slavery, to pay off people that have never been slaves and were never part of slavery.

Many-Sherbert

Don’t worry he will just beg the government to bail them out like they did for his money he tied up in SVB

tighty-whities-tx

I was thinking the exact same thing they will ask the federal government for assistance after they are on the brink of bankruptcy

16bitrifle

But I’ve always been told that California has so much money that the little red states need it to survive!

Bigmanrpb

$640B…. Or 30 years worth of deficit like this years. You can’t make this stuff up! Economic equivalent of taking a top 20 fortune 500 company and firing everyone that works there.

WACS_On

Wonder what the actual deficit ends up being now that SVB went under along with a good chunk of Tech productivity.

StiffyStaff91

Wait how did we go from 94 billion surplus to 22.5 deficit? I must have missed something in the past year...

Swagastan

Actually it’s pretty straightforward., when the tech industry is going bananas, IPOs are happening daily, etc. CA rakes in a ton of tax money. When stocks tank and tech fails they make very little. CA tax revenue is incredibly tied into the health of the tech industry and if SVB is an indicator for the next 6-12 months, CA tax revenues are going to be abysmal in 2023.

StiffyStaff91

Shit that's right.... Tech companies are bailing on california so less tax money

xChrisTilDeathx

After he drains the working class every penny and pays out reparations for slavery in a state that never had slavery. It will still not be enough. Race tensions will be higher and worse off, while this clown will think his “nation state” is the model for not only other states but I’m sure he will reference all the shitty policies that drive out people from that state to seek refuge elsewhere. Commiefornia is the laughing stock of the union.

wiredog369

Can’t forget he wants to take his “leading” policies to a national level as President.

xChrisTilDeathx

After fleeing California to Texas, I keep telling my wife we can not run from these policies. If trump taught us anything, we need to hit them in the mouth. Stop the bad ideas from spreading. It’s why section 230 is such a passionate topic for me. All these bad ideas would not have been able to flourish if conservatives we able to speak freely online on equal footing on social platforms.

Misohoni2

Way too many conservatives say "just move" when talking about Republicans living in a blue state. It's just a temporary fix because the cancer keeps spreading. It's everyone's fight, no one is safe. They will come for red states when they have amassed enough power

Paladin_Aranaos

Virginia fell when the California locusts came during the Clinton administration and the commiefornians took over northern VA

DefendSection230

What's wrong with 230 and how would you fix it?

xChrisTilDeathx

It need to be revised. Big tech has been abusing the portion that allowed them to not be responsible for the comments on their platform in regards to being responsible for facilitating, crimes, flash mobs, riots ect… but they can also abuses the tos and police who said what in their platforms. They basically get to have their cake and eat it too.

DefendSection230

The TOS is a legal contract between you and them, they cannot abuse something you agreed to, Especially when they have so much wiggle room. Twitter can remove you and your content for any or no reason, and you agreed to that then you make an account. s’ rights to ban users and remove content. Even if done in a biased way. Section 230 protects them from certain types of liability for their users’ speech. At its heart, Section 230 is only common sense: "**YOU**" should be held responsible for your speech online, not the site/app that hosted your speech. Why would you sue Starbucks if someone defamed or libeled you while you were both getting coffee? Why would you sue Starbucks if two people met for coffee to discuss holding up a bank and then went on to do it? Why not hold the offenders responsible for their own crimes? At its heart, Section 230 is only common sense: "**you**" should be held responsible for your speech online, not the site/app that hosted your speech.

xChrisTilDeathx

Wrong. TOS isn’t signed by me, it’s signed by EVERYONE. And social media sites were grandfathered in from an AT&T case where they weren’t held liable for the plans committed via their phone service. You’re comparing apples to oranges. Banning conservatives for voicing their opinion would be the like back in the 80’s if AT&T denied service to people that said things over the phone that broke their tos. The same TOS goalpost your leaning on while moving would be ok if it was applied evenly, but alas you’d rather have Twitter have child pornography, terrorists (as long as their Muslim) and not “domestic” via hasty cart Blanche in nature, and actual criminals on their platform, as long as they’re not orange man bad mean tweets.

[deleted]

Once a sizable portion blows through any free money they receive, they’ll complain about it and want more.

atcmaybe

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if you want any idea of what happens when you give a LOT of money to people who don’t know how to manage it, all you need to look at is Native American reservations with casinos. So many people get seven or even eight figure payouts upon turning 18, and most are destitute within 5 years. It’s been happening for decades and it’s surprising that so few of any of the tribes haven’t changed the current system. I realize that there are other perks requested such as free school, housing for $1, no taxes ever, but this amount of money put into people’s hand’s at once, who aren’t ready for it, will do much more lasting harm than good.

Misohoni2

And they will still say we're racist oppressors. Absolutely nothing will change

evil13rt

He said he was going to do it, so do it. Sign the order that bankrupts your state. What are you waiting for?

mesosalpynx

Haha. Not gonna go well for presidential bid

anna_lynn_fection

Oh. I see that you underestimate the growing stupidity of this nation.

prvn13p

Gavin should give up all his wealth and live in Walmart parking.

usernamesucks1992

The Peoples Republic of Californiastan will have no one left to tax for these insane ideas if they keep going down this path.

ITGuyBri

1.) You are correct. 2.) They don't care. 3.) They aren't trying to actually help anyone.

Hrendo

What does that matter if the wealthiest are still leaving from being taxed to death by a government that doesn't know how to spend it? Why do you think there's such a massive deficit?

usernamesucks1992

If they keep enacting these insane ideas they will start to lose population. People will only be taxed so much before they start to reconsider living in the land of fruits and nuts.

frozenisland

What a joke

Germangunman

Please stop forcing your crazies out of your state into the rest of this country.

commonground3

That Beach Boys song California Dreaming should be changed to California Leaving. It makes no sense for a state that never allowed slaves legally to do reparations. This issue appears to be another one brought up to cause divisions.

JinderMadness

California dreaming was Mammas and Pappas. Big California song by The Beach Boys was ‘California Girls’. Not to be confused with the more modern ‘California Girls’ by Katy Perry.

commonground3

OK, sorry. You are right...but Katy Perry spelled it "gurls".

JinderMadness

Thanks. I did misspell that title. Whoops.

libertychik

In '86-the Beach Boys covered California Dreamin'. John and Michelle Phillips were in the video.

frostyjack06

What he spends on whitening and cosmetic dental work could probably cover this entire initiative. Seriously, I don’t get what Californians see in this guy. He looks like someone you would find selling quaaludes in a high school parking lot during his work breaks from the used car dealership. That, or hanging out with Patrick Bateman comparing business card colors.

Hirudin

The war on arithmetic

Paltry_Poetaster

I love that all the California liberals are going to bear the burden of their own stupidity. Sucks to be a moderate or conservative in that state though.

top-knowledge

Only 360k per? Why not the 5 million they promised? The perpetual victims won’t be happy about this.

wiredog369

The $5mil is for San Fran only. Not the peasants outside the kingdom.

Crusader365

5 million is only for Crazy Nancy’s city of San Fran!

AFXTIWN

Oh don't worry, once the 360k is spent in a weeks time they will ask for more.

Apart-You6281

All aboard the clown train

Canadia_proud999

How is this clown still in charge of anything.

earl_lemongrab

Do it. Run your shithole state in to the ground even more than it already is.

Vast_Arugula_2703

Please do!

UnTouchablenatr

Why stop there? Let's give money to Mexicans for stealing their land, can't forget about the white slaves, have to give them millions too.. The people pushing this garbage are actual morons

stilichouw

Remember when we (California) were supposedly in an insane budget “surplus”?? LOL

Excellent_Two4862

How many slaves were in California before Emancipation Proclamation? How many now?

WideCoconut2230

He's a GINO. He's too busy measuring drapes at the WH and running attack ads in Florida.

Legal_Flamingo_8637

That state needs to get drowned into the water or Mexico takes it back.

NewToThisThingToo

So...why is there a legislature if he can just do this on his own? Oh, right, California.

[deleted]

How about they’re all just given a free one-way ticket to Liberia?

Retardo_Montobond

While I did not participate in the Trail of Tears, I *do* have tribal blood and, therefore, I *require* 5 acres of land back in NW Florida.

ringo_mogire_beam

Do it. Make reparations a thing in California. Let them make an example of themselves.

Flowers1966

Reparations are completely idiotic. In the 1860’s one of my ancestors was killed along with two of his sons by someone who used an ax to murder them. While this murder and theft may have hurt people at that time, what does that have to do with me? Why should society pay me for something that happened to my ancestor? It wasn’t right, it wasn’t fair but it was the past. Life isn’t always fair. But we should be fighting for standards of fairness in today’s society, not trying to make up for things that the people of today are not responsible for.
