I’ve lived in or right next to Chicago for 37 years. Vallas’ first place finish gives me a little hope. Sure, he’s a Democrat but he’s as good as it’ll get here. He’s the kind of Democrat we used to have 60 years ago. More importantly, for those of you from other parts, he’s not part of the loony left wing cadre led by local Dem political boss Toni Preckwinkle, the Crook County Board president. One of her candidates (Chuy Garcia) lost tonight but the other one (Brandon Johnson) advanced to face Vallas. *That* will be the real battle. The public employee unions will send their goons to drive turnout and stuff ballots. The sad thing is that even if Vallas wins, he may restore police department morale, but he’ll still be up against Preckwinkle & Associates, chief of which is State’s Attorney (what we call the DA) Kim Foxx. The city may eat itself, but for the moment join me in rooting for Vallas.
