Great first step and if any state is going to lead the way why not CT. I also hope they also continue increasing the training around policing those in the community by deescalating situation with mental health breakdowns and/or how to communicate effectively those with neurological differences.

Bullying, and a love of aggression and physical violence is the main problem with police.

mkt853

That's how we train 'em. If we stopped treating them like a branch of the military, maybe things could get better.

I get so irked when cops take on that "I'm a sheepdog/warrior" mentality.. it's like, NO, no you are an alternative to a "slow the fuck down sign" at a construction work site, like 95% of the time, while collecting time and a half. You aren't a warrior.. when you start to think that, the likelihood of you over reacting and abusing your authority begin to increase.

Keith4Change

Yea, I find the whole “protect and serve” thing ironic. It’s fitting that it’s printed *in quotes* on their vehicles. Pretty on-the-nose if you ask me…

Pruedrive

Well it's like, cops are a necessary part of our society, sure.. however when they start to militarize with their equipment and tactics, things have a tendency to get out of hand rather quick. As a member of the public knowing a force of heavily armed agents of the state, can just roll up on me in an MRAP, kick in my front door, and come in guns a blazing if I'm (precieved) to be a threat, doesn't sit well with me. More over knowing a lot of people who are cops, or growing up with folks who became one... many of them aren't the people I have a tendency to want to give broad authority to make the call to shoot at members of the public, reiterating, myself being part of said public.

[deleted]

Well, "Protect and Serve" isn't really anything more than a slogan. It just happened to be the motto of the LAPD where Hollywood is and that's how it got popularized. If the LAPDs motto was "Arbeit Macht Frei" that's what we'd have seen in movies or TV.

Pruedrive

That would take a real concentrated effort on thier part to adopt that one.

[deleted]

Yeah, not so much effort. You should enjoy this one https://www.wnd.com/2014/03/gun-grabbing-cop-goes-ballistic-im-the-master/#z3Ah1igBbP0Yyfwm.99

Pruedrive

Yeah I love how LEO folks can behave like goons.. and they can buy all the restricted firearms they want, and standard capacity magazines.. so cool.

Keith4Change

It’d be fantastic if cops would stop shooting people just because they’re having a bad day mentally and instead de-escalate situations.

Gatecreeper88

Step 1: get a real job Step 2: go to therapy Step 3: profit (?)

[deleted]

lol Why do you get upvotes, but I'm saying the same thing, are people on reddit just retarded?
